    “Nice spot, but not what we expected - return visit”

    We stayed at this property about 10 years ago and it was fantastic. For a much needed break, we booked again this year for 10 days through WestJet Vacations. Our original booking was for a "grand concierge" room (mistakenly thinking it was Royal Club). The room was fine but not at the same Royal level standards. After a day we upgraded and moved to Royal level for our final 8 days at the resort. Upgrading was no trouble at all and the Royal level staff were very helpful. In our first visit the hotel was owned by Occidental and this time, it appears Barcelo Group has bought Occidental. I'm sure they are more profit focused - staffing levels are a bit light and service standards have dropped. The facility and rooms are well appointed and well maintained - no complaints about those. Considering we are visiting for the second time with a gap of 10 years or so between visits, they obviously take care of the facility very well. Pools, walkways, gardens, beach, rooms, buildings and infrastructure are all well taken care of. We were disappointed with the general level of services in the restaurants. The one exception is the Royal level's La Caretta restaurant which has high standards and very good service. The other theme restaurants and the buffet however, all seem to be understaffed. Staff appears rushed and very task focused - just try flagging down the coffee guy as he flies by to another table! Food quality at La Caretta is a level above the rest also. We like our meat medium rare - at La Caretta, that is how it comes. At the other restaurants, it might come medium or even well done. Although we can't see behind the scenes, the kitchens are probably rushed as well. Overall we had a great time at the pools and beach. The Royal Level is definitely worth the extra cost. We hope the rest of the resort picks its standards back up to what they once were. The service and helpfulness of the Royal level staff were far better. A special thanks to Margareta, Ariadna and Lourdes at the Royal concierge desk. They are fantastic!

    “Vacation Club Occidental Cozumel”

    Loved this smaller and quieter resort ! So relaxing. Just what my husband and I needed. Beautiful resort and beach. And the guys at the club excursion desk were so friendly and kind. Not pushy. We especially loved Carlos! He is the nicest guy! Also loved Brigido and Oscar. Definitely not a party resort. Many people we talked to have been there several times. One couple comes back every year. I think we will too!

    “Nice, but there is some work to do...”

    As an Occidental Vacation Club member you have certain expectations of the Royal Club and the Occidental Grand Cozumel, while nice in many ways did not meet them. The rooms were spacious, clean and very well attended. The private restaurant, Caretta is nice and the service is very good, but it always seemed somewhat understaffed and could use at least one more waiter at all times. In addition, the wine selection is essentially non-existent. The Royal Club pool is very small and rather warm and there was no bar and lounge area to sit and relax during the evenings. The First Club has a much better lounge and bar area and a full time bartender from morning till 10:00 PM. In addition, excursions and such are booked through the First Club Manager, which seems odd if you're staying at the Royal Club. The rest of the resort is nice with two more pools; one for adults only and one for everyone, three a la carte restaurants and two buffet style restaurants. Overall the food was good...not great, just good. Booking meals at the a la carte restaurants is an exercise in mental flexibility and patience as the rules for when you can book and who gets priority seem to be written somewhere in the Mayan calendar. Overall the rating is a 3, but it could very easily be a 5 if they just took the time to iron out a few issues and ask customers what they expect from a "Royal Club"

    “Wonderful vacation in the sun!”

    We have stayed at the Occidental Cozumel in their Royal Club, for five or six years. The rooms are very nice, the beach is beautiful, the grounds are well maintained and the food is fairly good, although somewhat uneven. The Barcelo people have recently taken over this hotel and have made some improvements. The adults only pool, improvements to the rooms and updates in the Beach Club are welcome. The service continues to be excellent. The food is a bit better, but could use some additional improvement. We enjoyed La Caretta, the private Royal Club restaurant, but the menu there never changes and becomes boring quite quickly. Las Olivos was the most interesting restaurant, with an excellent salad bar and some interesting main courses. The Sonora Grill and the Coral both needed some serious work in the food and service departments. La Posada, the buffet restaurant, was ok. The Lobby Bar was a nice place, with some very friendly, hard working bar tenders. We go to Cozumel to snorkel and we were not disappointed. Even snorkeling off the beach was interesting, although we usually go on a boat snorkeling trip with Albertos three or four times during the week. We will return, but hope that the Barcelo group continues to make improvements to this lovely property. The main plaza could use a redesign to be a moe interesting focal point.

    “Relaxing get away”

    This was our first time at this resort and it was (for the most part) a very good experience. I splurged for the Royal upgrade and as mentioned by others Ariadna, Margarita and Lourdes are extremely accommodating. The resort has gorgeous grounds and it is a treat to just walk around the place. The rooms are very nice with the usual amenities. When we arrived we were given a room with two double beds and with very little fuss (actually none) we were changed to a room with a King bed. The pool areas are clean and well kept and the beach is incredible. My criticisms involve the food and the service at the pools. Although the food is adequate and you will never lose weight at this resort, it could be better. There are three specialty restaurants on site which are very good, but you are limited to a certain number of visits per stay at these restaurants. I found the buffet very plain and lacking in variety. The buffet always seemed to be understaffed, with the servers constantly running and not being able to keep up. If you didn't ask for your drink when you were first seated, you wouldn't likely get one, and once you got your first one, you weren't likely to get a second. Also, during the first part of our stay there was a definite lack of lounges on the beach. This was rectified on the second last day of our stay as the all the lounges at the main pool were replaced and the lounges from there were added to the ones on the beach. The bars (at both pools) also could stand to be expanded with more bartenders added as there seemed to be long line ups most of the time for drinks. And you were never served on the beach, which apparently was the practice of the previous owners (they need to bring that back!). Also - the swimming and snorkeling (at the beach) is better at the Occidental Allegra next door, which is not that long of a walk. My only other complaint is the internet. The brochures state that there is available internet. This is true, but what they don't say is that it is extremely expensive and very spotty. They seemed to be constantly working on the resort while we were there so some of these issues are already being addressed. The only one that really needs attention is the food at the buffet. But, as an indication of our satisfaction, we are planning on going back next year.
