    “Just a king bed for three adults?”

    We were so disappointed to find just a king bed in our room booked for three adults. We understood there would be two beds. The staff brought a cot after we pointed it out to them. The cot was shoved up right against the king bed-couldn't get out of the bed but at the foot. Moved us to the First Club level with a room with two beds-perfect. BUT, they then told us we would now have to pay for internet! Crazy!!-NO WAY! Seemed like the first 24 hours was a battle, but then we finally were able to relax. Very beautiful and lush tropical surroundings. Room updated and clean. Only two beers in the fridge with lots of pop and water. TV was very snowy...very few stations in English, not that we watched it much. Buffet needs work-would recommend fewer options but better quality. Specialty restaurants saved us...enjoyed them all, but mostly La Caretta for breakfast, lunch and dinner. This was the best part of the Royal Club level. Beach is good; snorkeling good too right off the beach. So happy to have smiles from Crystal, Santos, Carlos, Javier (Delta Rep), and Hector. Thank you to Sara at Guest Services for being so helpful and addressing our concerns promptly...like you cared!

    “Beautiful resort and great vacation”

    Just got back on Saturday from a a fabulous week-long stay at Occidental Resort with my boyfriend. We enjoyed diving every day and I got my PADI certification so I will be diving again in the future! We enjoyed the property very much. The resort is lush and tropical. The grounds are maintained impeccably and there is a lot of wildlife--wild pigs, coatimundi (raccoon-like animals), iguana and tons of birds. Check-in was a breeze. We were directed to the Royal Level desk and the whole thing took ten minutes. Bags were placed directly into our room that was a very spacious suite with a living area, sofa and TV, a dining room with a table and four chairs and a large bedroom. Balconies off both the living area and the bedroom. There were a couple of minor issues with the room, such as poor TV reception and no coffee for the coffee maker. Also, the bathroom was odd in that that there was no separation between the toilet, shower and sink area so if someone was using the toilet, nobody else could be washing their face or showering. Also, the closet was in the bathroom--sort of odd. As at many all-inclusives, there were never enough chairs at the pools and beach. At the beach and the main pool, reserving chairs at 6:30 am was pretty common! We did manage to find a shaded spot that we sort of camped at when we were sitting at the beach but I don't know why these places can't just come up with more chairs. The beach was pretty good for Cozumel--sand was a little coarse, but it is sitting on a coral reef so that's what I would expect. The water was nice in all the pools although after the first day the only pool we visited was the one at the Royal Level. Food was plentiful, but very mixed in quality. We didn't care for the buffet dinner at all. Choices were not that great and didn't taste as fresh as the food at the other restaurants. The seafood restaurant overlooking the beach was lovely for dinner, but the food wasn't that tasty and the portions were tiny. The Sonora (Mexican) and La Carreta (Royal Level) had the best food. Portions at the specialty restaurants were fairly modest and we just ordered an extra entree or appetizer after the first night if we were hungry. We also did room service a couple of times and it was prompt and hot. Breakfast at the buffet was tasty and it opened before anything else so we went there for breakfast a couple of times before early morning dives. We also enjoyed breakfast at the Royal Level but their menu was a bit limited. The staff all seems to work really hard, but I agree with other reviewers that getting that second cup of coffee or water refill was not very easy. On our final morning we went to the spa for a couples massage. The spa was very nice and pretty and the massage was a relaxing way to end our trip. I will review the dive shop separately but it was fabulous as well. I would definitely consider returning to this resort and for the deal we got I think it was a good value, but I wouldn't consider staying here if we didn't get the Royal Level.

    “Great experience ”

    Our family trip was from February 24 until March 3, 2017 and we had a great experience at this hotel specially with Gabby Gaeta and Margarita. They were both very attentive to our needs all the time. All restaurants had good food. Carlos was very funny with his dry soup and Tomas made the best Café Espagnol. Our room was very clean and quiet. Thank you all four of them. We will be back for sure.

    “One decent place to eat”

    First and likely last visit to Royal Level at Occidental Cozumel. No complaints about the accommodations, housekeeping or staff(except those pesky timeshare pushers). The problem was the restaurants, Buffets, Los Olivos (Mediterrean), Sonora(Mexican) Coral(seafood) were well below average. Lousy food and short staffed. As stated in a previous review, the workers were all task oriented. Water and coffee hard to come by at meals when 1 waiter is trying to work the room The one gem here is La Caretta(International food) at the Royal Club. Wonderful staff, great cook, nice atmosphere and great location). Ladies at the Royal Club Concierge desk were wonderful. Special thanks to Ariel & Lourdes.. Everything made possible with a smile. Royal Club pool and adult pool were fine(although adult pool did have early risers saving chairs). Tried the beach once. Not impressed with lounge chairs (use wood ones like at the small pool) or the beach(smallish and seaweed covered), All in all paid too much for this resort. Would not return

    “Nice spot, but not what we expected - return visit”

    We stayed at this property about 10 years ago and it was fantastic. For a much needed break, we booked again this year for 10 days through WestJet Vacations. Our original booking was for a "grand concierge" room (mistakenly thinking it was Royal Club). The room was fine but not at the same Royal level standards. After a day we upgraded and moved to Royal level for our final 8 days at the resort. Upgrading was no trouble at all and the Royal level staff were very helpful. In our first visit the hotel was owned by Occidental and this time, it appears Barcelo Group has bought Occidental. I'm sure they are more profit focused - staffing levels are a bit light and service standards have dropped. The facility and rooms are well appointed and well maintained - no complaints about those. Considering we are visiting for the second time with a gap of 10 years or so between visits, they obviously take care of the facility very well. Pools, walkways, gardens, beach, rooms, buildings and infrastructure are all well taken care of. We were disappointed with the general level of services in the restaurants. The one exception is the Royal level's La Caretta restaurant which has high standards and very good service. The other theme restaurants and the buffet however, all seem to be understaffed. Staff appears rushed and very task focused - just try flagging down the coffee guy as he flies by to another table! Food quality at La Caretta is a level above the rest also. We like our meat medium rare - at La Caretta, that is how it comes. At the other restaurants, it might come medium or even well done. Although we can't see behind the scenes, the kitchens are probably rushed as well. Overall we had a great time at the pools and beach. The Royal Level is definitely worth the extra cost. We hope the rest of the resort picks its standards back up to what they once were. The service and helpfulness of the Royal level staff were far better. A special thanks to Margareta, Ariadna and Lourdes at the Royal concierge desk. They are fantastic!
