    “Shortchanged and duped”

    This was our first time in Mexico so were really excited about our trip and booked a Royal Level Master Suite for 4 nights nearly 2 months in advance before our scheduled stay at this resort. However, upon arrival in the early evening at the resort, we were told that the Master Suites were all occupied. What!! I couldn’t believe my ears!!!!! We paid a lot of money only to find out there was none available! At that moment, we were tired and hungry that arguing with someone was the least in our minds to transpire during our supposedly beautiful vacation. So we had no choice but to accept what the person in the concierge desk, Miguel, proposed. He said we would be placed only for that night In 2 separate rooms, both on the 7th floor. However, the rooms were about 100 ft away from each other. He didn’t say the type of rooms. But I found out from their website that the rooms we had were a Royal Level Junior Suite and a Royal Level Luxury. Then he would transfer us to another room where we would all be together the next day. I asked him if it would be the Royal Level Master Suite which I booked and he said yes. He even continued that we would love the room because it is bigger than what we are going to have in our first night. He also declared that it is on the 4th floor. As soon as I heard that the floor is situated on the 4th floor, I became suspicious. According to this forum and other websites, Royal Level rooms are in the 6th and 7th floor. So I repeated and asked again if he’s going to give us the room I paid for. Again, he said yes. So I believed him. Although I detested the idea of having our kids who are both teens to be in a separate room, I thought to myself, I guess it was alright for one night, so long as we would be transferred to a room we’re supposed to have the following day. Second day came, we went down to the room which he said was a Royal Master Suite. On the wall outside the room, a sign said “First Club Room.” Inside, was a suite alright with 2 bedrooms, one of which had a bigger bed while the other had 2 smaller beds. I didn’t think that this room, although bigger, was better than the room we stayed the night before. I was expecting something nicer than the one we had since supposedly the Royal Level Master Suite was their best room after all. I noticed in this suite we were transferred to that there was a bedroom with a queen bed (?), which only has a tub that is covered halfway by glass going down from the ceiling. At the bottom of the glass where it meets the tub, dirt (possibly mold) was notable. There were areas on the grout along the tub that were black already and areas on the tiles that were stained. Further, there were parts where the grout seemed to be just slopped on. Instead of nice and straight, the grout lines were thick and uneven. The bottom of the door from the inside of the bathroom was damaged. Remarkably missing was the separate shower that I saw in the Royal Level Junior Suite. In this room also, the toilet bowl doesn’t have a separate stall. It was right next to the tub. The bathroom was not in great shape at all. It was dingy, small, and substandard. The mirror above the sink outside the bathroom had unsightly brown spots or blemishes, more especially on the right side of it. I took some pictures of the bathroom which you will see below. The bathroom looked like nothing was done for its upkeep. I found no surprise in it as they could not even manage to put back the hooks of the curtain in the bigger room that fell off the traveling holes. Thinking and believing that we were now staying in the Royal Level Master Suite, although I have some misgivings, we just went about our day. But when I later took a shower at the tub, obviously with half of the tub only covered, there is nothing to prevent the water from spilling out and splashing, thereby making the floor wet. The towels we placed on the floor to supposedly sop up the water didn’t help much as there was still a lot of water on the floor. I actually almost slipped on the way out of the tub. What was more infuriating was I found out that this was the Family Suite not the Royal Level Master Suite we were transferred to. The Family Suite is cheaper in rate than the Royal Level Master Suite. That was not the room I paid for! I felt I had enough of the trouble so I went back to the concierge on the 7th floor and told them to transfer me to the room that we should actually get. So that day, our 3rd day, he finally transferred us to a Royal Level Master Suite that should have been our room in the first place. So imagine all the inconveniences we had! This perhaps was an isolated incident that we had experienced. Maybe we were just the unlucky ones. But I will never ever stay at this resort again in the future. I didn’t like the idea that they didn’t hold the room when we booked well in advance and paid for a Royal Level Master Suite. Definitely I do not want to do business with people who will dupe and shortchange customers!

    “Loved the Experience ”

    The rooms in the hotel were just as pictured online, gorgeous and kept very neat and clean. The food there was very good with a variety of choices ranging from the buffet, to Mexican, Italian, and even Japanese food. There are multiple bars located throughout the hotel and the shows at night time are very entertaining. I will commend this hotel for their amazing staff. Everyone had a great attitude and really made staying here enjoyable to it's full extent. If there's one person that I thought stood out the most in the best way, it would be the activities person, Jonathan. He had a great spirit and kept a lot of people happy with dancing and water aerobics. My favorite part was that he always had a smile on his face. When others smile, I smile too. The last note I will leave is that the beach is gorgeous, there are plenty of palm trees and white sand right next to the water where you can relax in the ocean or just sitting on a chair by the beach. One thing I do recommend, is to bring a little bottle of bug repellent with you, because if you're unlucky, you might get bitten by the mosquitos after sun down. Over all 10/10 would come back again (:

    “Costco didn't do there homework on this resort”

    Mosquito galore at this resort, very humid during our stay, no air inside the bar lounge or lobby, only air is in your room. The food was terrible to OK. Food was very dry and at times disgusting. McDonald's or Domino's across the street at times would be a better choice. Staff won't tell you of the free amenities available at check in. Nor will they tell you that you can eat at the Mexican restaurant for lunch. They only tell you that the Mexican restaurant is for dinner and requires reservation. plus the staff told us the Mexican restaurant is for snacks only , when in fact you can order lunch. The lunch menu is on the back of the snack menu. Which they don't mention to you.

    “Meh. ”

    This is our first time to Puerto Vallarta. We love the Caribbean side of Mexico. Wanted to try the Pacific side. Here with our 3 kids. Last minute accommodation change brought us here. The condo we booked fell through. Did not do enough research before booking Occidental. We made the best of it though. The okay things: •Nice staff. •Rooms are all right. Air conditioning works great! •Food is average. •Beach is nice and waves are calm. •Hardly any people smoking. •Lots of kayaks, paddle boards, and boogie boards to use. The not so okay things: •Towel cards. I HATE them. I'm traveling with my kids so I don't need one more thing to keep track of. •No water bottles throughout resort. Only in the room and you only get 3. •Wristbands. I loathe wristbands. My kids hate them, too. •The main pool is ridiculously small. One third of it is a giant swim step. Such a waste of space. The other pool right next to it is less than 2 feet deep. For a resort this size they really need more pools. •Lots of little sting rays and little jellyfish in the water. We could see them all when we were paddle boarding. My daughter got and I got stung. It only hurt for about an hour. •We requested an adjoining room. Did not get one. We got 2 rooms pretty close but it was not what we asked for. •No wifi. •Reservations required for anything but the buffet. They fill up SO fast and then you're stuck with the buffet anyway. So annoying. We tried it. Glad it was only for 4 days. We won't be back. Thanks, anyway.

Regarding the comments you mentioned as not so okay: the towel cards are necessary as every hotel needs them to be able to keep track of them. Wristbands, as an all-inclusive hotel it is also necessary to provide all our guests with wristbands so that they can be identified as such. If you stay at any other all-inclusive hotel you will be required to use them as well. Requests such as adjoining rooms are subject to availability, the staff does its best to fulfill them and if it is not possible they will do the next best thing as in your case. We do have Wi-Fi available at an additional cost.     “Great Time at the Occcidental”

    We returned from a 10 day stay at the Occidental. Overall, we were very happy with our stay in Puerto Vallarta and at the Occidental. A couple of employees really stood out by providing great service. Benjamin in the lounge was the best! He quickly got to know us and ensured we provided great service. Salvador in the Italian restaurant was very sincere and also provided great service! Our server, Julio, on the beach was excellent. He worked so hard and went the extra mile. The resort is on the smaller size, but provides everything we needed for a great trip. The food was excellent and we were always able to find a dish we enjoyed. If you have a particular drink mix you like, be very specific about what you want. We decided some drinks didn't taste right becuase of translation issues. Resort Pros: * Great service * Easy check-in/out * Great food * Our package included Wifi that worked in our rooms * Great beach!! Resort Cons: * We had two rooms - both had problems with loud noices from outside. This included young kids running around and people above us and outside our rooms. * The rooms were furnished nicely. Great showers! * We were told that we could only visit each speciality restaurant once each during our visit. This makes no sense for visitors staying a long time at this all-inclusive resort.
