“Two weeks in a Mexican paradise...”

We had no details about the resort and place, but as a whole, I can summarize that was a very good choice to go there and create two weeks of an extra tropical summer experience, and escape from the icy winter Europe in December. You should opt for all inclusive to enjoy all kind of exotic food, drinks, cocktails, services, offerings and entertainment. A very good idea is to rent a car (hotel service will assist, US$ 30/day), in order to visit also the other places on the island (Palancar reef, Money bar reef, Sky reef, Nature park with condors and crocodiles, ancient Mayan objects on the island, and also the island's downtown). You will meet 4 types of iguana and many raccoons crossing everyday your way to breakfast, swimming pool or beach. Do not forget your snorkeling gear - otherwise you miss the schools of coral fish tightly approaching you, or passing by couples of 2m long stingrays and some Caribbean conch shells, lobsters, starfish, and perhaps the turtles, as well. The hotel has a local diving center, so go ahead with that, too. One tip: reserve one day for the trip to Tulum, Coba and Cenotes on the mainland. Drive to the downtown, park your car, buy return ticket for the ferry (US$ 20/person). The Barceló service at the hotel reception will organize the trip for you beforehand (US$ 40-50/person), depending on the program. You will see the magnificent Mayan architecture and listen to the story by the native Mayan people, still living in that part of the world. Well, do not forget to provide small tips for these people, they will appreciate it :-)

“Good value sun, sand and diving - family or divers only”

Since 2015 Occidental has been a once or twice-per-year destination for us (my wife and occasionally adult children & grandchildren). Flights from Toronto are direct, all-inclusive packages convenient (include ground transport), accommodations attractive, clean & all the bits work. Food is varied & well prepared, buffet nor specialty restaurants are gourmet (beach front seafood cones closest), but ingredients are fresh with fresh fruit & vegetables always available. On-site Pro Dive operation is convenient, staff knowledgable & skilled, boats well maintained & dive sites both close and superb. Non-divers have 2 pools, beachfront, supervised recreation and spa services to choose from. In season, supervised day-care for the little ones is also available. For good value well served, Occidental is your place.

“Beautiful site with lush vegetation and outstanding service!”

We spent a week at Occidental Cozumel in early December and thoroughly enjoyed our vacation. We had selected the Royal Level upgrade and I must say that it was well worth the reasonable additional cost. We usually do not upgrade, but since we do NOT enjoy eating at buffets and we enjoy “A La Carte” dining every night, we figured the Royal Level package was the best choice for us, otherwise we would have had to eat at the buffet for all meals except for 2 or 3 dinners (depending on availability). Emma, our concierge at the Royal Level, took care of all of our dinner reservations when we arrived, so that was done for the week. She was extremely efficient and accommodating. She told us Royal guests could have “A La Carte” breakfasts at the beach restaurant every morning, as well as “A La Carte” lunch at La Carreta, the restaurant exclusive to Royal guests. We took full advantage of these privileges and loved it. The resort is absolutely gorgeous! Lush vegetation everywhere, perfectly manicured. So many varieties of gigantic palms, beautiful ground coverings, flowers, fountains, and the architecture of the buildings just fits in so well. Rooms were very comfortable and always clean, plenty of towels, big marble shower and separate tub. The main pool is right by the beach so you can see the ocean all day from your lounge stairs and the ocean is just a few steps away. Always plenty of lounge chairs at the pool and the beach, you never need to wake up early to go reserve a spot. The pool bar is fantastic, they make any drink you can dream of, blender or shaken, and they come around all day to your chair to keep your thirst quenched. All the staff at Occidental Cozumel was outstanding, reception, bell boys, waiters, housekeeping, gardeners, pool attendants, bar staff, dive shop: polite, attentive, friendly, always a “can do” attitude, focused on making you happy. Also, I am pleased to report that we were not even once approached by the Time Share Vacation Club people, never an issue. Food in the “A La Carte” restaurants was really good, presentation beautiful. The only mild complaint would be that food was often lukewarm, maybe it was sitting for a while before being brought out. We went to all of the restaurants, really enjoyed the dinner by the sea at Coral but could only go once because the roof was undergoing maintenance repairs in the evening. The others (Sonora, Olivos and Carreta) were very nice, but the lights should be dimmed for a cozier ambiance. In all of the restaurants, the dishes and stemware were beautiful. We had breakfast at the Posada buffet the first day and it just confirmed that we are not the buffet type. We also had lunch at the beach buffet several times, for the sake of convenience, and although it was OK, I must say the variety was lacking, just one type of thin sliced cheese, 2 kinds of cold cuts, pizza hard, burgers overdone and dry, salads soggy with too much dressing. Desserts were nice though, but we don’t eat any. We managed to make a half decent salad, but it was underwhelming. Lunch a la carte at La Carreta was very good but service was slow. My husband is a diver and he really loved the dive shop staff and convenience. Dive boats departed directly from our pier and the program for the week was posted, 2 different reefs every half day. The reefs are magnificent, alive, unspoiled. Beautiful diving. So many guests have been coming here for years, for the beauty of the reefs and marine life, but also because they love this place and the service they get. We met many couples who actually did buy into the Time Share Vacation Club and are quite happy with their decision. If there was anything I wish would be different at this resort, I would definitely be the lobby bar. It is set up around a very nice open air plaza where the shops are and a nice big fountain, but it’s separated into different rooms or areas, and it’s all closed in between glass doors, it’s not open air. So you sit inside a glassed in bar, in the cool air conditioning, rather than being outside in the balmy air amid the beautiful vegetation and decor. I hate being indoors while on vacation in the Caribbean. I think I’m not alone because the lobby bar was not a very popular place after dinner. It would be so pleasant if you had live musicians in an open air lobby during the evening, where you can sit outside and have a drink after dinner. Instead, they have the shows or games in the Central Plaza, but there is no drink service there. Overall we really enjoyed this place and would not hesitate to strongly recommend it, and the Royal Level is definitely the way to go! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

“Exactly what we needed for our family vacation!”

We stayed here at the end of November 2018. It was relaxing, exactly what we needed. We have a young child. She loved the activities with the Kid's Club. Jesús the animator goes around on the beach looking for children to participate in soccer, sandcastle-making, cupcake decorating and other activities. We were nearby, but she got to know Jesús and met more and more other children every day. It was great! We don't usually participate in as many organized activities by the pool, but Raúl and Darwin of the animation team are so fun and so good at their job that they made us want to participate! They and Jesús got to know us, our child, what we liked to do and they even spoke some French to us because we come from Quebec. What wonderful people! Food was good, particularly the Mexican restaurant. I have celiac disease and I cannot eat gluten. The à la carte menus are clearly labelled with gluten-free items. In the buffet restaurant, I had access to gluten-free bread and pancakes, and the chef could always make me something on a clean grill uncontaminated with other foods, without a sauce that contained gluten, etc. It took a bit longer to get my food than it did for my family, but I appreciated the effort. Try the omelet station in the mornings, delicious! Snorkelling is fantastic even without a special excursion. Just right off the beach is amazing! Our only complaint was that with Air Canada Vacations, we only had one hour of free wifi for the whole week. Not per day, for the whole week. We decided to embrace this fact and disconnect from the world for a while, but not everyone can do this. Check with your travel agent or the hotel before leaving so that you know what the wifi situation is, depending on your vacation package. Lovely week, so relaxing, good food and drinks and very nice people. What more could we ask for?
