    “AWFUL”

    This was the worst experience I've ever had! The rooms are outdated, the food is awful, the staff is not friendly. I will not be returning to the Occidental, let alone the DR! $50 for WiFi and it constantly lost connection. My fiance and I could not use the WiFi at the same time; only one device could use it at a time. Rude staff who treat Americans poorly. I do NOT recommend this place at all!!

    “Dominican Republic mental health trip”

    This trip was not planned, yet it was great, blue sky, sunshine, palm trees, warm weather, pools and the ocean, what more could you ask for. All inclusive, meals, drinks and entertainment. A nice get away right before the rush of the holiday season

    “WHAT HAS HAPPEN TO OUR FAVORITE RESORT IN PINTA CANA”

    This is our 4th time back to this resort. We were there for 10 days at the end of October. The resort had no damage from resent hurricanes but one of the pools was closed for repairs. The food as always was very good but only 1 restarant was open each night thus giving you no selection. The French never did open during our stay. We got reservations every night because we had booked on the premium level and were able to get into the one that was open. Many people missed out and had to go to the buffet. Even though we were premium level the drinks were only standard and were never premium brands unless you went to the PREMIUM LOUNGE. We will have to think twice before we consider going back. The staff needs to learn more and better English.

    “There needs to be a zero stars option”

    We stayed at the occidental Caribe for 5 days and it was the absolute longest, miserable, disappointing 5 days of any vacation. Every single day there was at least one major issue with our stay. Whether it be rude employees or the fact that we were staying at a live construction zone. Day one started with getting checked into the hotel and having them place us into a dirty room. There were no pillows on either beds, sheets and towels were not clean, the toilet was leaking/clogged. We went to ask for a new room and was placed into another two doors down from the previous. The next morning we were awoken at 7:00 am to loud and constant construction with very large chunks of the roof falling onto our balcony. We went to the lobby, again, to request new rooms since there were obvious construction pieces falling onto our balcony that caused us to not feel safe to even enjoy the little view from the balcony. We never once received an apology for the noise or construction. All the front desk would say is that construction “should” be finished today. They refused to give us a time when the construction would stop and she would not give us a new room until we demanded and even then we were told the room wouldn’t be ready until 3. We returned back to the front at 3 on the dot and was told the room isn’t ready yet. The excuse for the room not being ready was for because we “wanted to switch rooms” so it wasn’t a high priority apparently. We very politely but sternly said “no that is not correct. We HAVE to switch rooms since there are long pieces of the roof falling onto our balcony making it a safety hazard for anyone to be near an active construction zone”. When it was finally “ready” we were never given an apology for the inconvenience and were just thrown cards at us as the woman walked away. We were well aware that Hurricane Maria had come into contact with the Dominican Republic. We reached out to the Occidental Caribe as well as Barceló to inquire if the resort had suffered any damage at all as a result of Maria. We were told “the resort has only suffered minor damages that are already being repaired before your stay”. This is a complete and blatant LIE. This resort is a complete construction zone. There are workers every day repairing multiple big projects. The biggest construction was the pool. One of the pools was completely closed and when we inquired about the status on our first day we were told “it will be open tomorrow” – it semi opened on our last day as we were leaving for the airport. Construction and repairs on the pool were a complete nightmare. Constant loud noises starting at 7 am, we lost power three times as they were trying to restart the pool. Water was completely turned off one morning as they were refilling the pool. Transportation to the airport was a complete headache. On our first day after arriving to set up our return private shuttle the women was rude and completely unhelpful. She constantly stated that our planes have been delayed when they weren’t, we even pulled up the airline app to show her and she still told us we were wrong. She then started to talk about us in Spanish IN FRONT of us to the other employees around her. I may not speak fluent Spanish but I know enough to understand that an EMPLOYEE of a resort is calling us stupid Americans right to our faces. To top off the transportation nightmare on the day we finally were able to escape the resort we arrived to our prepaid and preset up private shuttle at 11 on the dot. Only to wait around for 10 minutes when we asked what the holdup was for we were told they are waiting on 10 more people to be in the van. No, we paid for private. Food and drinks are absolutely horrible. I survived five days at this “gourmet” resort on pasta because it was the only thing semi eatable I trusted after getting sick my FIRST day there. Not all of the restaurants were open every day and you must make a reservation that day, none in advance. We showed up to every reservation to empty restaurants wondering wants the point of the time reservation when no one else is here. Drinks were absolutely watered down. If they were not watered down then they were filled with bugs. When you point out that your margarita is filled with bugs they will roll their eyes toss it out and pour you a ‘new’ one – still complete with bugs. This experience has completely turned me off from any sort of traveling for an extremely long time. All in all, if you are looking to spend a LOT of money to be disappointed, disrespected and completely let down the Occidental Caribe is your dream paradise! Just remember to bring your hard hat!

    “A little disappointing”

    My boyfriend and I stayed here August 12 through 19, 2017. We had done a lot of research to find the best hotel in Punta Cana within our budget. First of all, the beach was absolutely beautiful. No umbrellas or huts, but plenty of palm trees for shade, even when the beach is packed with people. The bars are nice too, although we felt the alcohol was definitely diluted, more so than at other hotels we’ve stayed at in the Dominican. Two things were disappointing about the hotel. First of all, they are seriously understaffed. This was a problem from the moment we arrived and wanted to check in. Our room wasn’t ready when we got there (no doubt due to the fact that there aren’t enough cleaning ladies), so we went to the beach. When we got back to the lobby 2 hours later, it took over an hour of waiting in line for them to check us in. They were also not organized whatsoever. There were two lines, and people in the other line, who arrived in the lobby after us, got their room keys and were checked in first. We were told, however, to stay in the line they had assigned us to. As mentioned, there are also not enough cleaning ladies at the hotel. Two times it happened that when we got back from having spent minimum 8 hours at the beach, our room still hadn’t been cleaned. 8 hours and they still hadn’t cleaned. One day, they never got around to doing it at all. Staff in the buffet was also insufficient. Not once in the 7 days we were there did we get our coffee served to us before having already finished our meal at breakfast. The food was the other thing that was disappointing. We ate at the buffet on the first night and were seriously unimpressed. Not enough food, and not very good food. I’m admittedly picky, but even my boyfriend who will eat anything was disappointed. Luckily, there are enough a la carte restaurants that you don’t have to eat at the buffet at all. Our favourites were (surprisingly) the French, the Italian, and the pizza restaurants (the pizza is actually open every day for lunch, which is when we had it, but doubles as an a la carte for dinner). The Mexican and Dominican were decent. What we were really disappointed with was the Japanese Tepenyaki (literally undercooked rice). On our last day we had the lobster dinner on the beach (not included in price) which was amazing. I wish I could remember the name of the man who runs that service; he was phenomenal. We each got an enormous lobster, in addition to an amazing seafood salad to start and two other courses. It isn’t cheap, but I highly recommend it to anyone who likes seafood. Other than this, room was clean, pools were nice, wifi decent (we paid for it). Beware the vendors! They will try to gift you little items only to then pressure you into buying their items. We literally had to make detours going into the lobby to avoid being harassed. Personal rating: 3.5/5.
