    “Not worth the money!!!!!”

My husband and I just returned from Punta Cana. This hotel is in need of repairs, let alone up dating. Beds are old and uncomfortable to say the lest. We were on the top floor and could hear our neighbours talking among other things. Food was plain and tasteless. Beach was nice. Staff was friendly. Would not recommend not worth the money.

“In the process of updating, had a great time!”

I traveled with a group of 9 people, from January 29th to February 5th and everyone had a blast. Prior to booking we read all the reviews and knew what to prepare for, my understanding with this hotel is that they seem to be going through some updates but regardless everyone in the party enjoyed their stay and would return! General: The grounds of this hotel are lovely! The main lobby is beautiful and very open. The perks of this hotel is that is is all one building although it has about 700 rooms all the amenities are within walking distance. There is a tennis court, gym, and child area that we did not use. My only suggestion is to have a map for guests, so they can find everything easily. We found the gift show to be pretty reasonable for souvenirs but pricy for other things. Staff/Service: We found the staff to be very nice! always smiling and did their best to answer questions. Niro who arranges the taxies and coordinates the bus's was able to help us get a free taxi to a near by market and always made sure we got off on our excursions. Housekeeping sometimes a little slow ( they are on Dominican time after all!) but they always did a good job, if they ran out of something they would always bring it to our rooms as soon as they got them. We only had on issue our second last day when trying to extend one of our rooms (as we weren't leaving until 7 on the Sunday) but it was quickly resolved by one of the front desk managers who extended one of our rooms to a 5 o'clock for free when we were more than willing to pay for it. Rooms: We rented a total of 4 basic rooms they were in block 5 and one in block 6. Non of these rooms were updated but they still were nice. The bathrooms however are certainly starting to show their age (the ceiling tiles in the bathroom of 6324 are starting to fall down). There was never an issue with the hot water and we had a great rain shower head and the beds were comfortable. There were a few nights we would return to get ready for dinner and our rooms had not yet been done, but housekeeping would wait for us to get ready and clean while we were at dinner they always left lots of towels. We found however that we spent so little time in our rooms that these things did not bother us. If you are picky about rooms I suggest opting for one of their updated ones which looked very nice! Pools and Beach: There are 2 pools and a small kids water area, the main pool has a small swim up bar and has a shallow area to wade in we spent most of our time here because of its closeness to the beach, snack bar/buffet. We never once had issues finding umbrella's or chairs for all 9 of us. The Second pool, is a smaller (possibly newer?) area with a built in Jacuzzi and would be great to have a lazy river with the water fountains! it also has build in loungers and side tables in the water. We enjoyed this one because it was so quiet most likely because it did not have swim up bar, it's bar however was very close and you could also have lunch at the Mexican restaurant (al a carte at night). The second pool is very close to the kids area which has a few water slides and water features. Our plan was to spend most of the time at the beach but we enjoyed the pools enough to spend quite a fews days around them. Occasionally the towel bar would run out of towels for 30 mins or so, if this is going to bother you bring our own! The Beach: We walked the beach several times and truly felt that this resort had the nicest stretch. It is flat and long with no seaweed what so ever, there was also plenty of natural shade (thanks to the palm trees!) and always more then enough beach loungers to go around. We would return just for this alone. Food: I am a picky eater, and can honestly say I was able to eat more than just hotdogs and fries from the snack bar. We had 4 a la cartes: Japanese, Mexican, Dominican and Italian. The Japanese was the group favourite and I found them to be the most understanding of my allergies (shellfish). We did find the service to be slow and kind of unorganized at the other 3. We would have one person take our order only to never see them again, someone else would bring the food but have no idea where the plates were going then a separate server for wine and another for water. Someone would almost always get the wrong appetizer or get their soup first (while everyone else got their appetizer or vice versa). Everyone however did enjoy the foods at the a la cartes since we were on a family vacation the iffy service wasn't enough to ruin our stay. There is a 24hr buffet (closes for diner) that has great variety for breakfast, lunch and midnight snacks! The main attraction however should be the PIZZA PLACE in the loft above it, which we didn't discover until our second last day unfortunately but I would have eaten there all week. The main buffet was great and had plenty of variety, each night had a theme and breakfast was pretty much always the same. At breakfast there was 3 omelette which became pasta stations at dinner, we only at in the main buffet for lunch once and usually stuck with the one out by the pool. Personally I would have been more than happy to eat at the buffets all week rather than our a la cartes. Entertainment: We found the night entertainment to be okay, you could tell the staff had put in a lot of effort but usually preformed in front of a half empty venue which I think would be disappointing for any performer. Our biggest complaint there was the music was always louder than the people signing and occasionally there was just too many people on the stage at once. Michael Jackson of course was everyone else's favourite, but I personally really liked the latin hits! The entertainment by the pool was always entertaining. Activities and Sports: There was a lot to do! We didn't participate in any of the on resort activities but they did have a disco on the beach on night that we sat at and we stopped in at the foam party. You can rent all sorts of things like kayaks and boogie boards at the beach hut and there is a timetable of events and activities by the main lobby bars. There is a disco in the basement and a casino by the theater. Drinks: We enjoyed all our drinks, the golden pineapple is a must have! Myself and two others drank it all week with out getting sick of it. We brought our own mugs which I think is a must as the cups are just the small plastic ones. Sometimes the drinks were slushy, sometimes they weren't but I think it is unreasonable to except a constant flow of slush when at an all inclusive resort as they go through so much of it. They were all very generous with the alcohol so if that is your thing there is no need to worry. Overall, my family was there to have a good time and relax and we found we are able to do that here wether we decided to park at the beach or the pool. My next time in the Dominican I would 100% stay here again, we weren't a picky group and since we spent so little time in our room those 'issues' didn't bother us one bit. Same with the slow service at the a la cart's it was nice to sit down and discuss the events of the day knowing we weren't in a rush. It

“A Ghetto in an Oasis - Worst Hotel Ever”

I have never given a review like this but that's because I have never stayed in such a disgusting establishment like this either. If the hotel paid me to stay here I would never ever stay here again. I am a seasoned traveler spending about 80 nights a year in hotels both for leisure and business. This is a factory which should be on the same scale as a budget hotel. Everything about the property is cheap, dirty and horrible I am very surprised they can stay on business at all. The most unprofessional and slowest service anywhere in the world. Appalling customer service st check in. The receptionist couldn't care less about how long we were waiting to get checked in. The hotel is so old and tired. The hotel is full of drunken yobs who are loud and drunk all the time. The food is so bad that for 1 week I ate bread, rice and some fruit. They are so low budget and cheap that they recycle all the food. They even skimp on the fruit. Although the buffet is big ( well it has to be for such a huge influx of people) there is not a single decent thing to ever eat there. No fresh juices any where ( and we are in the Caribbean imagine that), only white bread, old glasses and cutlery, horribly presented main dishes. We are in the Japanese restaurant and I was dying to run out. The waitress took our order and the chef made us all something we didn't even order. Chefs were so loud and noisy that it made the dinning experience so unpleasant. The restaurants serve terrible food. On one occasion I am sure what I saw in the Dominican restaurant was the same food from the buffet but just presented differently. On some menu's it says it's they have different kind of fish but after staying there for a week it was exactly the same recycled fish. The hotel has spent hardly no money or effort to make anything nice - food, decor, ambience , drinks , furniture etc they are all old and cheap. You ask staff for something and it's faster to watch paint dry on the wall. It's so so slow to get anything. I changed rooms 3 times. Upon check in which took 1.5hrs we were taken up to a dirty and used room. Αmother one had no towels, another one the card reader on the door didn't work and the list goes on and on. If I was the General Manager I would throw the towel in and close the hotel down. It's a tired and sad place. To me the Barcelo group have not invested anything in this dive of a hotel. I have the worst impression of this group , this hotel and the Dominican staff unfortunately. The only highlight of my stay was when we were able to get out of the hotel and eat in the Hard Rock hotel and Casino. I had never been so happy to see a well run hotel and clean establishment like that in my life. This place needs to be rescued. It's like the titanic but has sunk already. Poorly managed. They must really be making money as we spent a lot of money for 3 rooms and they hardly spend a penny on anything on the hotel. I hope the Executive Directors running the Barcelo group read this so they can help. It seems the GM is not doing anything about this dump. I do give a little credit to Magalis the Guest Relations Mgr for trying to fix things for us but poor women there is not much you can do when you have such a poor product to work with. It's almost a lost battle. I will never come back the way this hotel is today. Good Luck and hope others who want some quality read this and think twice. Go to the Royalton next door it is so much nicer and pleasant. Not sure of price though.
