    “Great Resort!!!”

    I stayed at this resort in April 2017. We had a relatively large group of 11 adults and 3 children. Some adults were local, some traveled from Miami, some from Boston and my wife and I from Colorado. Though we all came from different areas we were all 150% satisfied with the amenities the resort had to offer. We tried pretty much every restaurant and I have to say that the variety of different foods offered at every restaurant are second to none. The food was also fresh, tasty and served at good temperatures for all meal periods. I really liked the way the resort handles the dinner meal periods by reservations only at some restaurants and a nicer dress code for the evening; teh alternative was to attend the buffet which was also awesome. Opportunities for late night dining were always available. Liquor selection was awesome. The staff was very cool and worked very hard at making sure all of our needs was always met. We also booked some excursions through the resort which we enjoyed very much!!!!!! I highly recommend this recommend this resort for anyone looking to have a nice all inclusive vacation in the Dominican Republic!!!!!!!

    “upgraded”

    I bought a superior room, asked for a gold bracelet. Paid an additional $140.00 to have certain privileges, but not the room. The management upgraded my room, I had no additional charges. Royal is very good.

    “Royal Level Review - Stayed April 14-21 2017”

    We stayed in the Royal Level at the Occidental Punta Cana from April 14-17, 2017, in building 21, room 302. Our room was nicely renovated, and very spacious with an ocean view. King bed with a separate living room area. The room had 2 TVs, walk in shower, Jacuzzi on the large patio, double sinks in the bathroom, large closets, plenty of storage, in room safe, free Wi-Fi for the week (anywhere in the resort), robes, slippers, stocked mini bar (beer, waters and sodas). When we arrived, there was a large bottle of rum and a fresh fruit platter. There was even a banner on our door saying “Happy Anniversary” (10 years!). The Royal Level area was lovely, lush and secluded. Very nice and quiet. There are 3 room buildings, each have 3 floors (no elevators, just stairs) a private lobby for check-in etc, pool, a la carte restaurant (you can eat there every meal, no reservations required), and secluded beach front area with private bar and security guards. The a la carte Royal restaurant was great, we mostly ate breakfast there, had awesome service from the wait staff. The Royal Arena beach bar was great. We had awesome service from the bar tenders (mostly saw Genesis, she was fantastic, very lovely woman!). Top shelf liquor at the Royal Level, my drink of choice was Grey Goose with cranberry and soda :) Bavaro Beach is an incredible beach. Lovely white sand, not a lot of seaweed/debris on the beach and turquoise water. The Royal Level beach area had nice shade canopies and palm trees, so finding shade is not difficult. Also, there are tables and couches at the covered Arena bar on the beach. Be sure to wear lots of sunscreen if you are pale!!! The rest of the resort was very nice, majority of the rooms are now renovated, I believe they are just working on buildings 10/11/12. The pools are all very clean. The pool bar was good, but not top shelf liquor. Decent service there, didn't have to wait long for drinks. Didn't really use the main buffet, we mostly ate at the beach front buffet for lunch with friends, and the a la carte themed restaurants for dinner. The restaurants were decent, but we really enjoyed the taco and pizza stands near the theater up top the best. They are open late, so if you get hungry late head up there! Overall we had an amazing vacation! The one tip I would suggest to Barceló is to undergo more training for the staff in the rest of the resort (Royal staff all great), and there was a bit of a language barrier at times, but we mostly got our point across.

    “HORRIBLE!”

    HORRIBLE NIGHTMARE VACATION (Incase you don't read the whole thing the staff was so RUDE and so mean I would never send my worst enemy here , we never complain but this was a vacation from hell) We read all the horrible reviews after we booked it, we thought we would give it a chance but we are here to save you and your money . First off we were talked into spending extra money for Occidentals " first club " experience , and we had no priority treatment we had the same horrible room as everyone else and we even paid for ocean view but that's not what we got we got a bunch of trees in our view and we weren't even close to the ocean . We had no private check in which is written on the website under what room we got . When we went to the front desk to ask to change rooms because they were horribly renovated, no mini bar , hot tub didn't work, 2 English Channels , air conditioning was super loud so we had to sleep without ac,our shower and toilet backed up everyday and our view wasn't what we paid for there was a line up of people complaining about their room and their experience everyday . We were changed to a new building after 2 days of fighting with them the new room had pretty much all the same problems we just got a better view. They over book people and tell everyone they get a renovated room but when they get there they fight with the front desk for 3 days just to be put in the room they paid for . HORRIBLE SERVICE , HORRIBLE STAFF . So bad it ruined our trip and other people we talked to when we were there . The staff are so RUDE and miserable , you can't even tip your way into good service. They don't say thank you and when you ask for something it's like such a huge burden for them to get you a drink or food . We talked to 11 different couples who have been traveling for years and every single person said it was BY FAR THE WORST SERVICE AND STAFF RESORT THEY HAVE EVER SEEN . There is no room service, no waiters to bring drinks at the pool or the beach , the buffet was the same bad food everyday and line ups for breakfast where you had to wait 30 mins to get in to eat . What kind of all inclusive resort has 30 minute line ups just to go eat . When in the buffet we've had to ask 3 or 4 people just for drinks or cutlery. Anytime we asked for a drink at the bar I was surprised when they started making it , other times we would go to the same bar and ask for the same drink they just made like 10 mins ago and they would say no " they don't have" or pretend they don't understand English . My husband and I have been harassed everyday to sit at a time share presentation or buy something from them . My husband even had one of the hotel supervisors ask him to buy drugs and even asked him to borrow money because he was broke multiple times . The hotel grounds were horrible unkept,un painted . The only thing positive thing about this trip was the beach which the hotel has no control over , we sat on the beach for a week because that was the only part that made us not want to go home right away . In conclusion the staff was unbelievably rude and unaccommodating this place should be shut down , this did not feel like a vacation it felt like we were in jail and couldn't leave and we felt like such a burden to everyone working here . WILL NEVER BE BACK TO OCCIDENTAL and everyone we talked to there felt the same way and they wrote letters and bad reviews as well , we don't like to complain we vacation all the time and never had any issues but this is horrible and we hope we help people by not wasting their money and time here . The hotel will comment on bad reviews and just say sorry and not do anything about it . They do not care

    “Beautiful Beach and good times!”

    My wife actually won this trip! We love to travel and had not yet visited The DR! The Occidental was a bigger resort than we are used to but we loved. Amazing food at our Ala Cartes, The staff at the lobby bar quickly became friends and we had lots of fun with them. Make sure to wander down past the hotel section to get a taste of the locals. All and all a great destination.
