    “Huge complex that charges extra”

I was disappointed with this hotel as we drove in the car park to see that we had to pay Ten Euros a day to park the car. I was more disappointed when I learned that to use the spa pools (which were much smaller than the impression given in the photos) we also had to pay Ten Euros for an hour. But the biggest disappointment for me was the huge Saga sign and plethora of older people taking advantage of the 'all inclusive' deal. I'm not keen of having my breakfast served to the soundtrack of tapping walking sticks and squeaking walking frames. I know I'll be like that one day, but if I'd known I would never have booked this hotel. The resultant cafeteria type dining experience left me cold both for dinner and breakfast - the food was often cold. I expected a four star hotel but found it to be more like a holiday camp with organised games and entertainment. A bingo session, followed by line dancing, followed by a flamenco dance or two on the only evening we ventured into the bar. Great if that's your thing, but its definitely not mine. The food was freshly replenished and eggs prepared to your liking, there was no fresh fruit salad - only whole fruit. A good range of cereals, milk and croissants or rolls and a good range of cold meats, cheeses, etc. Staff were very well organised and efficient and constantly clearing tables and cleaning and re-laying them. The outside pool looked really nice, but the weather was too wet and cold to use it. In fact the weather was so bad several buckets appeared to collect water that was dripping through ceilings and our corridor was completely flooded one morning. That said - it was the tail end of Storm Felix that had flooded Cadiz and it was very very windy. Our room - we'd asked for a sea facing one was a good size and the very large bed was comfortable - the pillows, however, were lumpy and need replacing really. We didn't like the sliding door on the bathroom which was heavy and very noisy and we weren't keen on the sink being outside the bathroom. There was an unpleasant smell from the drain of the sink too. Toiletries were minimal and the complimentary water was only evident on the first day. The shower was very good and there was a grip rail, but no slip mat. Adequate clothes storage in the form a large sliding door wardrobe with shelves which also included a safe if you needed it. I saw a sign that said it had to be activated from Reception and surmise that there was probably an 'extra' charge for it! It was a very large hotel and very clean everywhere. Around the corner is the Barcelo Resort and it seemed to me that they own pretty much most of Punta Umbria. We would not go back here because it was definitely not the type of hotel we like and I really object to being charged for 'extras'.

“Needs a lot of attention to detail”

Went with Saga and had a pleasant stay for the whole of February although it was very cold on arrival and quite a few guests did complain. The hotel is in a nice place for those seeking a lot of peace and quiet and as this town is not a major tourist area it is nice to mix with the locals in their own unspoilt town. The rooms were clean and the towels changed daily; the facilities and animations were totally acceptable and the restaurant started well but very noticably went downhill after the first 10 days. With the help of the Saga Rep, we voiced our concerns with the Cheff as the variety had deminished and the meat cuts were cheap and very chewy (bit like old leather). The bread rolls were hard and dry and the range of fresh fruit was poor and limited. The Cheff, quite understandably, sang the Company song and said everything was fresh and if there was something missing all we had to do was ask, which we did but it didn't seem to alter things. The staff were all very pleasant and sara and maria (the animation team) were great kids doing a good job. They just need to learn that most Brits abroad don't like their their ears damaging with modern rap typ music but, that seem to be the way it is these days wherever you go. Would we go again? My answer to that is only a maybe in a couple of years but, no way would we go for any longer than 2 weeks.

    “Saga Inclusive break”

Pleasant stay, Comfortable hotel if a bit chilly in the public areas out of season. Rather noisy and busy at weekends. Punta Umbria very accessible as were walks on the beach and in the Enebrales reserve. Good excursions to Seville, Columbus and Huelva organised by Saga. Guides on excursions were particularly good.

“Great hotel in all aspects except food which was of poor quality”

Great location and lovely room and facilities. Buffet restaurant served food of poor quality cooked inappropriately--eg cheap meat cuts grilled and so inedible.A surfeit of frozen veg (carrots/sprouts etc) Poor quality and variety of fruit (even oranges which were in high season and VERY cheap--those provided for us were poor)

    “Nice hotel but uninspiring food”

Positive things: 1. It is not a big hotel so the ambiance is small, relaxed and friendly. It is the type of place that would make people travelling on their own feel safe. 2. The hotel has a Moorish feel and is not one of those anonymous concrete blocks. The rooms are pleasant with adequate storage, a shower over the bath with plenty of hot water, comfortable beds and most have a balcony. 3. It is a short walk via a private boardwalk to a sandy beach which stretches as far as the eye can see. 4. It is right beside a nature reserve which stretches along the sand dunes and coast to the right of the hotel with a series of boardwalks from a winding path onto the beach so plenty of opportunity for walking and bird watching. 5. There are lots of cycle paths for cyclists in the area and there is a nice path for runners straight from the hotel. 6. Nice pool area. 7. Nice sangria on all inclusive board and I found the coffee from the machines not bad (it is usually awful in hotels like this). 8. Some of the fish was nice, but only when cooked fresh in front of you and there was an adequate choice of salad ingredients to make a basic salad. Negative points 1. The reason I have not given this lovely hotel a higher rating is because of the food which had gone downhill since my previous visit. I think the problem is that the hotel was not very full this time (February 18) so choice was limited. There used to be a carvery and I remember having roast pork and crackling. 2. But also the food was not very hot. 3. The quality of the food was not very good. Fruit was not ripe. Pears were rock hard, bananas seemed frozen sometimes, it was difficult to find a kiwifruit that was ripe. Melon was lovely but only served occasionally. Meat was stringy and tough; casseroles/stews bland. (The food was better at the weekends when Spanish people swelled the number of guests so maybe it is better in the summer.) 4. The bread was disappointing. Most of the rolls were rock hard although supposedly baked freshly each day. There was limited choice of wholemeal bread/rolls. 5. We were served the same desserts daily: jelly; icecream (usually strawberry, chocolate, pistachio, caramel or vanilla); and a small, repetitive range of rather sickly gateaux. We had bread and butter pudding once a week which was popular amongst the British Pensioners. 6. The public areas were very cold. The hotel is definitely built to keep it cool in the summer and although the bedrooms were nice and cosy with the heating on, the corridors were freezing. 7. The town of Punta Umbria does not have a lot of character -it's not the sort of place you can spend days exploring, sitting at cafes watching the world go by and the nearest big town, Huelva is only worth the one outing. (You can get to Huelva in the bus which goes from near the hotel.) In summary: A lovely hotel for a relaxing holiday in the sun, long wanders along the beach and a friendly community of British Pensioners escaping the British winters but if you want excellent food or a vibrant night life, this is not the place for you.
