    “Disappointing and frustrating experience”

    Our one night stay at the San Jose Barcelo was confusing and tolerable at best. When I made the reservation through their online site, I requested a quiet room on a higher floor if possible. I did not realize they would put us on the six floor, what they call a “Premium“ floor which I probably paid extra for and did not realize it. After a terribly confusing experience finding the parking garage, parking our car, and getting our substantial luggage into the hotel (very poor signage, a common problem in all of Costa Rica, which in this case caused us to have to lug our luggage up some stairs into the hotel, only to discover later there was actually a closer accessible entrance into the hotel from the garage but absolutely zero signage lead to us not discovering it), we went to check in, and were told we would have to check in on the six floor, without explanation. Totally confused, we went up to the six floor and were checked in in an area that was serving what appeared to be free hors d’oeuvres and drinks. Upon checking in there, nothing was said to us about the apparently premium services available on the six floor, and particularly nothing was said about the hors d’oeuvres and drinks available. We later went down to dinner — a very mediocre and overpriced hamburger at their cafeteria, seriously understaffed—and upon returning I noticed in the elevator a sign advertising a “welcome cocktail“ complementary to guests of the six floor. We were tired and wanted to relax in the room and thought it would be nice to take advantage of that welcome cocktail, so I went out to inquire, asking “I understand guests of the six floor are entitled to a complementary welcome cocktail?“ In response, the woman at the six floor reception desk responded verbatim, “Where did you hear that?“ I was shocked and told her that I saw it advertised inside their elevator, and then she acquiesced, saying that yes, we were entitled to a welcome drink but we had to drink it in that special lounge area and could not bring it into our room. At this point I felt annoyed and told her that first of all no one had ever explained to us anything about the free hors d’oeuvres or cocktails on the six floor, and that in addition I have never ever stayed in a hotel anywhere where you could not get a drink served at the hotel and bring it into your room. I guess the Barcelo does not provide room service either. But what upset me the most was the woman at reception apparently trying to prevent us from accessing what was clearly advertised as a free “welcome cocktail.“ Anyhow, sorry for the long ranting review, but I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone.

    “Typical city hotel”

    Room overlooked a very busy noisy road, better glazing is required. We were on an All Inclusive basis but they didn't seem to understand what this meant, hard to get a drink before lunch from the bar and were directed to the pool bar where the service was very poor. Also, wine very limited with meals lucky to get a second glass. Rooms comfortable and well equipped.

    “Family Trip in Feb 2018”

    If you are looking for a quiet place that is semi-all inclusive with no frills, this is your place. Crowd is mostly senior citizens so don't expect night life at the place. Food was average but the same at every meal. Staff was very pleasant and always took care of you.

    “Pleasant quick stay.”

    We stayed here for only 1 night, for our flight out of San Jose the next morning. It seems to attract more for conferences and business stays, we felt a little under dressed for just being tourists. Overall it was a nice stay, I liked our view of the city and mountains from our room. The bed and pillows were comfortable. We used a taxi that is usually waiting outside the hotel to go into the downtown (late on Sunday night not recommended, most places closed.) There is a sushi restaurant in the hotel but a little pricey for us (we are not there on business accounts). Next day we did not have much time so hung out by the pool which was nice, they have lounges and hammocks which I liked. Something I really liked was the botanical garden on premises. Small but a nice little walk and feels lush even though your in the city. Only thing that I did not like was the fridge was locked? and felt very off limits and uninviting unless you wanted to pay for extras and they advertise free wifi but when i tried signing on it said $7/day! I didn't think it was worth it for 1 day so I didn't do it, or maybe I was doing it wrong who knows. Staff was average, we met much friendlier outgoing ppl of Costa Rica outside the city but nothing in particular to mention. They let us have an extra hour of check out no charge which was accommodating.

    “First time visit to Costa Rica”

    Our family of 10 adults, spent 10 days in the Barcelo San Jose in January 2018. Our room was clean and tidy, the breakfast had a lot of choices for every taste, and yes, the elevators were a little confusing at first, but we felt very secure with their system. The desk clerks were very helpful answering our questions about local sights and educating us about the colones. We enjoyed downtime in hammocks by the pool. Our very favorite part of the visit was the nightly and most delicious food by the pool at the Rancho Bar. Brayan and Orlando provided fantastic service and they were a lot of fun!!! We would do this again in a heartbeat!
