“Great vacation at the Barcelo Arenas Blancas”

We stayed at the Arenas Blancas Resort Feb 12th-16th. Airport transfer was smooth and relatively quick, 25 mins or so. Upon arrival the resort grounds looked nice but the exterior could use a coat of paint. I understand the resort is doing renovations to some areas so the exterior could be one of the areas. Check in was quick and we were given a top floor room in the center of the resort. When we opened the door we were pleasantly surprised at the remodelled and very spacious room. The views were amazing, full pool view, resort view and ocean view. Prior to our arrival I contacted the resort for special requests and they sure went over and above for us. The trip was our son's first all inclusive and it was his birthday so the resort booked a table for us at the Mexican restaurant. After dinner was done the waiter brought out a Birthday cake and the staff sang Happy Birthday. It was a special time and we sincerely appreciate the gesture. I would like to say THANK YOU to Yoleidys Diaz Griego for making all the arrangements for us. Great asset to the Barceló team. We spent a fair amount of time in the lobby bar as this was the only place you could access WIFI using the 1 hr cards. Each card costs $1.50 CUC so it does add up fast. Service in the lobby was ok at best, more often than not we seemed like more of an annoyance than paying guests. Tip or no tip, it did not seem to matter. The beach was absolutely amazing, powder white sand and crystal clear water as far as you could see. I had to go down very early to get a seat under a palapa due to people leaving their towels on the chairs to reserve them. Pretty rude when you save a seat and don't use it for the entire day. The beach staff are super friendly and clean off the chairs for you with a brush, nice touch. The beach waiter was also amazing, he worked the entire beach by himself so he didn't come around as often as we would have liked but he knew his workload and when we asked for 2 drinks he brought us 4. His tips were well deserved. We used the free peddle boats and kayaks on the beach. The water was so clear the boat was great to jump off way off shore. There is a snack bar and lunch buffet just off the beach with amazing sea views. If you like chicken you will love this place. Rotissorie chickens were some of the best we have ever eaten and there were plenty to go around. The buffet had lots of selection and we always found something good to eat. No Ketchup for the burgers and fries so If this is something you need bring it with you. Wait staff was excellent but the service from the bartenders was poor. Do not worry about drinking the water in any restaurant, it is all purified. Just don't drink the tap water anywhere or you will have a crappy vacation. The main buffet was pretty good, lots of choices for pick eaters, lots of meats, fish, prawns, crab claws, buns, pasta, vegetables and cheeses. Made to order eggs were great for breakfast. For dinner we found Turkey, beef and ham and all were excellent. We had the option to eat at the Solymar but chose to stick to our side, we found all we needed on the Arenas side. To book a restaurant you have to do it at the Solymar side. We went for a steak and lobster dinner one night for returning guests and it was amazing, big lobster and the steak was superb. The pool was very big and clean but was lacking the pool bar as it was shut down for renovations. It is probably a month away from completion. The beach was so amazing that we spent most of our time there. We went on the double decker bus tour which cost $5 CUC each, money well spent and you can ride it over and over again the same day. We booked the jeep safari on the airplane and it turned out to be an amazing excursion. $100 each and it was a full 11 hour day of fun in the sun. We drove our own jeep for about 3 hours off and on, went snorkelling, swam in an underground cave, went to a farm and had an authentic Cuban lunch and went for a boat ride. The day was filled and you had the option to play with the animals, ride horses or whatever else you chose to do. This trip was a real eye opener, we drove through a small town and the poverty was widespread. Truly heartbreaking but all part of the experience. Cuban people are so wonderful and due their best with what they have. We went to the Havana Club Rum factory to buy our alcohol to bring home, 1 ltr of white rum $5.20 CUC and aged dark rum $6.95 CUC. If you smoke the cigarettes are super cheap in there too. I saw some for .40 cents a pack. Our intention was to have a family trip together but we met a great guy (Sam) and his 2 daughters from Toronto and spent a few days relaxing with them, it was great to have someone else for our boy to hang out with. At the end of the trip we exchanged contact info and the kids are still talking. Go Jays! My biggest complaint was the amount of people smoking, you can smoke everywhere and the lobby was in a haze every day all day. It wasn't as bad on the beach because of the breeze. Overall we had a great vacation and will definitely be back. This is a place rich with history and wonderful people. Super safe to go out and explore, lots of shops, restaurants and beautiful scenery everywhere you look. .

“Nice resort with lots to do”

Nice Hotel with plenty to do! My wife and I wend to Barceló Solimar January 19 to January 26. We were flying with Sunwing and after numerous times flying with Sunwing this year Sunwing was on time. Check in in Ottawa as well as emigration in Varadero was flawless, fast and professional. WE landed in Varadero at 10.00 HRS. and arrived at the resort at 12.30 HRS. Our room was ready by 15.00 HRS. The room was clean spacious and everything in the room worked. The food in Solimar is better then in most resorts in Veradero. My wife has allergies so we only used the buffed restaurant for our meals. Food is plenty full with various outlets and locations. Bar service is also offered in various locations. The beach as all along in Varadero is a dream with white sand and shallow water that gradually goes deeper. Even non swimmers can enjoy the ocean and have fun. Plenty of palabra’s and beach chairs were available. There was never a shortage during our stay. Entertainment goes on all day for those who chose to participate. In the evening a band played for one hour and we could dance to Cuban music. The show starts late and we only watched twice. All shows in Varadero are performed by professional people who visit the hotels on a one week schedule. For those who chose to watch it is really worth while. For older people the show is too late in the evening. One small drawback to mention. There are two hotels Barceló Solimar and Arenas Blanca. Solimar is more expensive then Arenas Blanca. Guests from Arenas Blanca are allowed to use all the facilities at Solimar. Many guests pay for Arenas Blanca and then spend all their time in Solimar, including eating at the buffed. This makes the dinner hours quite busy and lineups happen frequently. In conclusion: The resort is a middle budget Hotel. I would recommend Solimar to anyone who enjoys the Cuban People, who are friendly, helpful and clean. In all our travels we have never seen people as the Cubans. Life in Cuba is hard, as compared to Canada. Therefor tips are a necessary sort of income and most Canadians are good tippers. We will be back.

“Third time at Bracelo Solymar & Arenas Blancas Rooms 3402 & 3404”

We arrived after a very exhausting day of travel with many delays due to the bad weather! Upon arrival at Arenas Blancas we were told that we were being moved to The Barcelo Solymar! WOOHOO!!! We were two couples and were up graded to Junior Suite Bungalows! We were so happy when we put our key in the door to see a very cute little sitting area with a dining table, a living room & a bathroom ( all on the main level) Up the stairway to a large king size bed, another small sitting area, bathroom with a shower, and a gorgeous balcony over looking the grounds. Beautiful!! We were so excited!! We all headed out to explore with our friends as it was their first time. Everyone was floored by the beauty of the grounds!! Three pools, lots of bars, lots of restaurants to choose from and of course the friendly staff! My husband was overjoyed at the cigar lounge. We all headed back to get ready for dinner!!!!! NO HOT WATER!!!! I showered on my hands and knees as the water was so cold!! Off to the front desk in the morning!! "We will have someone look at it.. So sorry.... You need hot water for sure". End quote!! This went on for 5 days. I had enough!!! We move you to the main building. I would never have thought how much I appreciated a hot shower!! Our friends stayed in the bungalow and we all used our room for cleaning up!!! The maid service in both rooms was amazing!! I never really saw them but Thank you to the lady that cleaned our 3404 room and sent the watch that I mistakenly left behind when I changed rooms 1414. You are an upstanding employee and should be recognised for your honesty! I tried to put in a mention at customer service but she just nodded and smiled. The front desk staff were always friendly considering they listen to complaining people all day! I wish I could remember their names! The food at the resort was just OK! We never starved but for sure was not the best resort food we have had. No real flavour to anything and if there was flavour it was of a questionable variety. We never did the A La Cartes as we really thought it would be the same fare only more limited to pushing one item around on the plate. We preferred the Arenas Blancas side for buffet as it was a lot less busy and it was relatively the same fare only a smaller venue. The coffee/ cappucinos at the Lobby in of both hotels is amazing and if you want a real spark to start your day try a Brazilian coffee!!! It was sad that they did not have the repeat guest dinner this year. We loved it the other time we were there and felt it was a real treat! The pools are amazing!! Clean, warm and lots of chairs to pick a seat!! Yes, some are missing tiles but is this not to be expected. The hotels are older and run 365 days a year. Can you imagine if they were closed for tile repair during your holiday? We have nothing but praise for the grounds and the grounds staff!! The grounds keeper around our bungalow would meet us in the morning and made very beautiful flowers out of palm leaves and would present them to us wishing us a great day! Please give him a big Thanks!!! The bars were adequate enough for what we needed! My husband brings his own Pop and I bring Clamato juice!! We just grab some alcohol and mix our own if necessary!! They had beer and just about any alcohol you could want! You are not getting a fancy drink but it is great just the same. We had lots of young adults at the pool bar around the Barcelo. Most of them were very respectful and were just trying to have a good time in the sun! We enjoyed watching their days progress and give a big shout out to them for the entertainment!! LOL Also, a mention of Karen at the quiet pool by our rooms. She was exceptionally friendly and kind. We were sad to see her leave everyday at 4! Wish she would have stayed open longer! I REALLY missed the beach grill/ seafood restaurant/ late night bar that used to be located right at the beach.. It was always my favorite area at the Barcelo!! Last but not least!!! THE BEACH!!! I have been to all of the carribean countries and really think that this is the best beach so far! White sandy beach, gorgeous torquoise water, shallow enough to walk really far out and have a relaxing swim quite far from shore. They have paddle boats, hobby cats and kayaks! All of which our group enjoyed. Towels were never a problem! TIPS! 1. Watch the cigar store!! The lady tries to up charge the prices. Check the boxes for the prices and always check your change. 2. The lobby bank charges roughly 3 percent to change your money and never gives a reseipt. 3. If you have any issues with mosquito bites bring lots of spray, after bite, hydrocortozone and benedryll. Our travelling companion was bitten on her face one night while she slept and had a huge reaction to the bites. 4. bring lots of snacks as they are limited and very expensive at the hotel 5. Sunscreen is very expensive at the hotel so bring lots. 6. Bring toilet paper from home!! The public bathrooms run out fast and having a soft roll in the morning is a plus. The public bathrooms are not the nicest either and the smell sometimes is a little strong! If the hotel could get the hot water aspect fixed and possibly someone to taste test some of the buffet items, I personally think that you would have a solid 4 + star hotel. We all would come back to The Barcelo Solymar !!!!!

    “Low expectations were realized”

I usually read the reviews before a trip and they were pretty spot on. Travelled with my wife, 3 year old, sister in law and in laws to arenas blancas. The good: The beach is spectacular. I have been to many places and this is one of, if not the best, I have been to. So clear and so many shades of blue. The beach goes on forever. There were always loungers and shady places to relax. The pool was great for kids as it is so shallow. It was pretty dirty and missing tiles but the kids had a blast. Check in and check out were easy. They let you check out at 12 but you can keep your bracelet until you have to catch your bus to the airport, even if it is in the evening. The bad: I knew the food would not be great but it was so gross. I wish it was Cuban food and not a strange mixture of western looking food. We are a family in the service industry and it was the worst service we ever had. The servers were nicer on the solymar side and were pretty good there for some reason in comparison. We were tipping and continued to do so but many staff seemed to hate their lives and us as well. We were wondering if we were doing something wrong. On other vacations we knew staff very well, treated them very well and took pics with them. That was in Mexico though. The pool bar is under construction at arenas blancas and there is only the snack area by the beach and the lobby bar. It was easier to get drinks at the beach bar and there was one server doing the entire resort! He was good but only saw him a few times. The line up at the lobby bar was always long. People smoked everywhere. I mean everywhere. Our room had very uncomfortable beds and ants. The AC worked very well but it was either hot or cold in the room. The shower worked well but the shower towels were crazy small. The front desk staff were helpful though. You can exchange money there at the front desk. The entertainment was non existent at arenas. The solymar side is for sure the party side. We were there one night and had a good time. Summary: If you want a great beach for a cheap price and don't mind roughing it with food, drinks, service, rooms and entertainment then it is worth it. We were spoiled in Mexico and will pay the extra to return there for our next trip.

    “Çok güzel bir plaj...”

2 gece konakladığımız beyaz kumları ve plajından çok mutlu kaldığımız bir otel oldu. Restoranları geniş seçeneğe sahip ve yemekler lezzetli. Odalar da çok konforlu değil fakat rahat ve temiz. Barlarında sunulan çeşitler pek fazla değil.
