    “Jose the Dominican Chef was Amazing”

    When I and group of friends arrived, we were a little disappointed with the hotel. They didn't have much to do. Although my room was ok, my other friends didn't run with the same luck with their rooms. It would be great if they would do some remodeling to it facade and rooms. However. Jose the only Dominican chef y Solymar made us feel like home. The beach is beautiful. White sand and clear water. Five stars to the beach. Five star to the chef. For being so friendly. I also want to thank Paco, the hotel manager and the chef from the Italian restaurant. (Sorry I am bad with names)

    “try another hotel”

    tfood has been going downhill every year we have been coming. this our 4th year. the hotel is starting to show its age and needs a complete renovation. the bar has downsized its number of drinks available and charges for all the good drinks, lots of the alla cartes are charging for pop, beer etc. any one we have talked to that have gone to other hotels all inclusive means all inclusive not being charged for anything that is alittle bit above the norm. the food is bland no taste and the selection is terrible. i didn,t realize that fish, weiners and beans, fish and beef stew, spaghetti, pork chops, meatballs, watery srambled eggs cold, under cooked bacon that was still kicking, and a mediocre salad bar. this was availabe for breakfast, lunch, and supper minus the eggs and bacon. anythihg that was new was undercooked or raw.quite often the chiken was undercooked with blood coming out.we noticed quite a few people bringing their own condiments, ketchup, peanutbutter,jam, cereal for their kids, hot sauce, salt and pepper,seasoned salt etc. this speaks for it self on the quality of the food.all we heard on the flight back was the terrible at the barcelo and the awsome food at the other hotels. the staff trys its best to look after you and are always going that extra mile to help. if we do go back to cuba we will be stayig at a different hotel. one other note it has turned in to a party hotel for all the kids on school break dont expect to get any sleep from wednesday to saturday.

    “A hotel that is slowly but surely falling apart”

    I recently travelled to Varadero with several family members. We stayed at the Barceló Solymar. The hotel is falling apart. It's not clean The sliding balcony door in our room didn't move. We didn't have water one day. The electrical outlets were coming out of the walls. In my son's room water was leaking from the ceiling. As far as service; the amenities you were to get daily were hit or miss. Some days you got towels, bottled water etc. other days you did not. Same for the beach towels. The food was tasty but at best lukewarm and sometimes stone cold. The hotel seems to cater to the younger university crowd. If you are looking for a week surrounded by drunk young adults who party to 3; this is the place for you. Anyone else should stay away.

In these cases we have talked to the guests and the issue has been sorted. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience we caused you with the water. As we informed, these works were mainly due to a malfunction of water in a very specific area of the establishment.     “January 2017”

    Returned from Barcelona Solymar in February. Second time at this resort. Check in was quick for Cuban standards, staff friendly and accommodating to get us in our room earlier than normal and adjacent to our friends room. The hotel definitely needs some maintenance. One bank of elevators were down at times. Our main issue was the shower. The doors were falling off, and dirty. They should just add curtains. Our safe worked but our friends had issues for several days, luckily they were able to share ours. Their bath tub was chipped and grimy.. Small repairs would work wonders. Quite a walk to the beach...and no bathroom facilities at the beach...so we decided to try to upgrade to a Bungalow. We visited a couple of different types and decided we would stay in our room. After a couple of days we found a bathroom closer to beach in the Seafood Restaurant between Arenas Blancas (sister resort) and our resort. Very busy so needed to get to beach early if we wanted shade areas. Water was beautiful. 2 days were quite windy, one day no swimming allowed. We never went to the pool. New International Hotel being rebuilt beside Solymar so it was noisy on that side. No view! Saw two other new resorts, this area really building up, getting ready for the USA! Food was normal fare, this was my 8th time in Varadero and I would say the variety of food is improving. We still pack little things like spices, salad dressings, etc. Broke down and bought a can of Pringles in the gift shop. 6 PESOS. They have an exchange counter at hotel, the Sunwing rep told us it was higher than Bank or currency bldg in between resorts. ( We never did see that place) they do not accept American money but yet their exchange is based on US dollar!! A la cartes were iffy. We didn't hear good reviews about Italian so we stayed away, the Spanish was not great, the Mexican was good, the Asian was fair. Some of group went on double decker bus. It does not go all the way to Playa Caleta now, turns raround after town. Girls said the pina coladas served on the bus were delicious. Bus stops at new Marina as well. Wifi was available in the lobby. Price has gone down for an hour card to $2.00. Service was spotty. Spent a few evenings in lobby bar, with great bar service. You can walk from Solymar, thru Blancas to downtown. We went to the Beatles Bar twice. Great time, lots of 80's classic music. Busy spot, get there before 9 to get a good seat. One evening we went to the outdoor bar at Blancas, it was nice to sit outside and socialize. Met nice Canadians, but also was embarrassed by some rude Quebecers. Some very pushy and not considerate to employees or other guests. Maid service was good, and they were around bright and early everyday to refill our fridge..with beer, water and soft drinks. A tip now and then goes a long ways. I left trinkets for the maid. We did have some tiny bugs in our room. Take bug spray. I always get bug bites, which swell and are very itchy. Take lotion, spray and Benedryl with you, just to be prepared. Some people are not bothered at all. You will also never a converter for the room. Overall a fun trip with great girls....a few hiccups, but we do love Varadero, the people, and beaches.

I would like to clarify our rooms and categories order, at Solymar: - Bungalow - Standard room - Ocean View room - Junior Suite Bungalow - Suite Room So, if you are in a standard room at Solymar and you want to change to bungalow - you don´t need to pay extra cost. Really, it´s not consider "upgrade". It´s different if you want to change from your standard room to junior suite bungalow. I am very worried about the issues of the room that you have commented and I will follow up on your review with my team in order to remedy these shortcomings. We get to work to prevent other travelers can have the same perception that you. We would like to tell you that we work every day to maintain a spirit of teamwork and always give a close treatment to our passionate travelers.
