“Ok for the money as long as you don't pay over 1100 cad$”

As for almost all of Cuba the food is average-nothing special. The water pressure is non existent so wash your hair well before you go and hope you don't need to during the week. The beaches are as always the most beautiful so no complaints there. Staff is friendly and helpful. The rooms are basic. Entertainment leaves a lot to be desired. But overall a restful trip

    “Underwhelming”

How disappointing for us after returning to the same resort 15 years later but without our 3 children this time, and now a Barcelo , to find it so poorly maintained , in need of painting, ground maintenance & general cleaning neglected. The tiny bar cups were totally unnecessary & aggravating along with the consistent long line wait with minimal staff. The food was blah even by Cuban standards, the placemats & chairs soiled with dirt. However a short walk to Solymar found improvements. Unlike our last visit where the staff always greeted you happily & quickly & warmly, we now found ourselves greeting them first. They did respond quickly in kind, but there was a noticeable difference. What has happened to the happy staff that drew us back to Cuba? We were saddened by this. Our bed was clean & comfortable. However the apparent visual erosion around the tub & lack of proper functioning air conditioning controls & overall cleanliness has caused us concern. BUT the beautiful Varadero beach remains for long walks as well as the access to walking freely & safely all through town just steps out the front door.

“Hotel is nice, but was not for us”

First off, this was our 10th trip to Cuba, 5th to Varadero, so know what to expect in Cuba. Arrived Feb. 9th (Thursday). We had stayed at a Barcello in Costa Rica before, it was ok, and a friend has stayed at a few in Mexico that she liked, so we did a last minute booking, got a good deal, without researching too much. I liked the Solymar hotel at first, but it just didn't work out for us. We were originally in one of the rooms in the main building, 4th floor, top of the atrium. I liked the atrium, it has long vines hanging from the forth floor down to the bottom level, palm trees. Problem was, the room is above the lobby bar, at night we got lots of noise from bar, in morning, from the road (Cuban drivers use the horn a lot) There are no thatched shade areas at any of the pools, even at Arenas Blancas (the 2 hotels are together, you can go back and forth), we spend most of our time at pools so tried to stay under the trees to keep from getting burnt. Room had a few problems, were missing a sliding shower door, and you had to be careful not to pull the other doors out of the track, the toilet would stick on and not refill the tank, but I could take off the cover and make it stop. I'm used to Cuba, if I can get by, I do it and don't complain. The money exchange in the hotel will not accept credit cards (all the other places we have stayed at in Cuba have), just exchange from $Can to CUC. So if you didn't bring much $Can., thinking to use a credit card, you have to go to a bank somewhere in Varadero. That said the shops in hotel will take credit cards. We were ok until Sunday, then things went sideways. At noon, there was a leak in the lobby, at the same time as a group was checking in. It was an omen. The buffet restaurant was super busy at dinner, they ran out of plates, took a long time for things to clear out. Later that night, we realized the air conditioner had quit, (it wasn't working all that well before) I just opened the window for the night to get by. Also had no hot water the next morning, and air in waterlines, but this cleared up later. Waited until noon to ask for someone to fix air (main desk was busy, groups checking in and out all morning) Was told someone would be there in 20 minutes. We didn't realize, we were probably supposed to be there in the room to let them in. At dinner time, still no air, asked at desk, they said someone would be there soon, and that someone had to be there to let them in. He came promptly, checked it out, and said we needed to change rooms. They let us check out the new room, seemed ok, air was running so we moved. We later figured out that the air was stuck full on, no matter what you set it to, so rather than waste more time and move again, we just regulated the temperature by turning it on and off. What I liked: the beach is great, you can walk out a long ways, there is a sandbar where its only knee deep, and then it goes out a ways again. Staff did a pretty good job of keeping grounds clean. Some more garbage bins and ashtrays at the north side of pool would help. They drained the hot tubs daily, I think. The room safe is opened with the room key, saves you from remembering a combination. No charge for using the safe. They stocked the minibar every day without fail. You just leave the pool towels in the room when you leave, some places make you turn them in, get a slip, show it to the desk. This was easier. Like I said, I liked the atrium, the hanging vines, open staircases, and glass lined elevator. Staff were friendly and experienced. The lobster at the seafood a la carte was great. The Italian a la carte was ok, but other than the lasagna, it was pretty much same as buffet. We heard that the Mexican a la carte at the Blancas was good, but to avoid the Spanish one. There is another restaurant called Barbacoa just on the other side of the Blancas, we had a great lobster meal there for 18 CUC, If you are bored with food, I would recommend walking over there. You are at the edge of the town, so can go there if you want (we didn't) There is an Adidas store just across from the Blancas, but we didn't have time to check it out. What I didn't like: Food was ok, lots of variety so could always find something, but it doesn't change much day to day. Would have liked having some shade areas by pool. Some of the tiles around the trees have been heaved by the roots, the loose tiles are a tripping hazard. Likewise, one of the trees on the north side of pool has nails sticking out of it just above the base, between the loose tiles, and kids running around, someone will eventually get hurt. Both rooms we had were loud at night. The air conditioners themselves were loud, and there is lots of noise inside the hotel at night, as well as some from the construction site next door, and from the road in the morning. There are rooms in buildings separate from the hotel, but for more $. It would help if security would try and keep a lid on the noise in the early morning. No ashtrays around the pool, people were dropping ashes on the tiles. Ashtrays would keep our feet and pool cleaner. People smoke in lobby, outside restaurant. Summary: Its not a bad hotel, just would have liked something quieter at night. When we had problems, staff did address it, we just decided to live with the air conditioner problem rather than waste more vacation time. Food is ok, but repetitious. A bit about the airport: it was very backed up when we arrived, took one hour to get through. We met a couple that had taken 3 hours, so I guess we were lucky. They X-ray all luggage when you arrive (I can't really understand this, it was scanned before we got on plane???) Only one scanner works, apparently, this causes the backup. Outside, we were assigned a bus, a guy came up, grabbed our luggage and asked "which bus?", took it 50 feet, then asked for a tip, we dug around and found a coin. We often tip and give small gifts in Cuba, because they have very little, but didn't like the way he went about it. Because of these problems, and the fact that Varadero is getting more hotels, and will be even busier, I think next time we will look at other places, either in Cuba, or elsewhere.
