    “not the best of times”

    We bought a time share last year and this was our first year of use. We would never ever buy one again. The place is grossly over sold and over booked! We did not get the room our contract assured us of and were told repeatedly that we had the correct room . I showed them the floor plan of the room we should have (I had a copy of our contract with us) and they insisted that the room they gave us was the "new" version of the studio room when in fact it was a standard hotel room with a king bed. Ours is supposed to be a studio with a wet bar/kitchen. Learn to recognize the sales staff and avoid them at all times they are a despicable lot! The room they gave us had mold on the walls and ceiling and stunk. Peeling paint revealed mold underneath. The beds are old and uncomfortable. Just peel back the sheets if you want to see for yourself. We finally got an "upgrade" and lo a behold when they opened doors to the adjoining room there was our studio with wet bar not even being used! Now the room was referred to as a suite! The buffets have a wide variety of food but are of average quality. The restaurants are a somewhat better. Wait staff are all very friendly and appreciate tipping. Housekeeping staff also friendly and helpful as were bartenders at the First Club, pool bar and sports bar. As far as we could tell the tidy grounds are for show and the rooms are poorly maintained. Wonderful beach! Shows were fun though scheduled a little late for us. P.S. Check the safe in your room to make sure it is bolted down!

    “Excellent Value and 5 star setting ”

    We just returned from a week at the Allegro Playacar. We did not want to spend a ton of money on a hotel room that we would never be in and chose the hotel based on the beach and price. We couldn't have been more pleased with our choice. The hotel is spotless and the grounds are beautiful and lush. There are lemurs and tons of tropical birds. Our room was simple but brand new with a nice bathroom and firm but comfortable beds. We loved the bungalow style rooms. Felt much more like Mexico than a high rise hotel. The beach is the best in Playa Del Carmen. Many people from other hotels asked us about ours based on their walking past. We swam in the ocean daily-no rocks, no coral and no undertow. The staff kept the beach clean and swept of seaweed daily. The wait staff is outstanding. Our waiters Alejandro and Umberto greeted us at each meal. By then middle of the week they knew what we liked and had our morning coffee ready as soon as they saw us. They work so hard to make you happy and there is no skimping on staff. We never had to wait for a drink as the bars and bartenders are plentiful. The resort was full but never felt crowded. There are plenty of chairs available at the pool and the beach. The soft white sand is beautiful and there are palm trees everywhere so you can choose sun or shade. Much preferable to the umbrellas of the nearby resorts. If you like entertainment and activities the pool staff is ready to help you and your family join the fun. Samba and Valerie made everyone feel welcome. We did stretching and Zumba on the beach often. There is something for everyone but you can also relax. The food was very good. Tons of fresh fruit and a fresh fish daily. There are so many choices that no one will go hungry. Made to order omelette and fresh squeezed OJ every morning. The staff and the setting are what makes his hotel great. We felt at home and relaxed. Be sure to tip your maid and waitstaff. They work hard and depend on tips. Can't wait to return.

    “Gorgeous beach resort very near downtown”

    Overall a very good experience, likely to come back in the future. This was the 4th Occidental location we have visited so far (read prev reviews for others)... so was able to compare/contrast pretty well vs other offerings. Comments viewed from lens of having two kids (13 and 15) and joined by cousins of similar ages... The good: -Quality of the beach was fantastic... was groomed each morning (a little noisy)... so largely seaweed free and high quality sand. Water depth was quite shallow for at least 100 feet from shore, providing a large area to play in the surf... and reflecting that beautiful aqua-marine color that the Carribean is known for. -Location is a 30 min walk, or 5 min taxi to downtown Playa... so easy to venture off the resort if wanting a little variety. Shuttle to Cozumel is downtown as well. -Square footage of the rooms (first club) was spacious... really more than we needed, but better than too little. -Food quality was above average for Occidental... was really quite consistent through the week. Resort also had more top-shelf type drink options at pool bars compared to other resorts. -Service was excellent in the first club, resturants and bars. -First club wifi was great (esp compared to some other resorts). -Pool temps were perfect... slightly cooler than the ocean (which was warm). -Upkeep of the property was very nice... better than normal... perhaps due to Barcelo's recent purchase and raised standards for the grounds and common areas. -Location of the first club right off the beach! -Location of first club rooms right off beach! The average: -Beach area for the first club was just so-so... actually worse chairs than the normal area... in need of an upgrade. -Food variety was just so-so... buffet became quite predictable after two days... and impossible to get dinner reservations for every night (esp with 8 people). -Check in for first club on Saturdays: this is due to policy for 7 day stays... Sat to Sat... so forces all the business into one day. Perhaps nothing can be done, but as a customer... it erodes the experience a bit. -Size of resort is not very big... so great to keep track of everyone, but not a lot to explore vs some of the bigger resorts (like XCaret or Punta Cana). -Towel availability was not consistent... one day, in particular, could not get towels till mid day... and the quality of the towels varied from day to day. -Snorkeling not good off the beach (too far from shore)... but not fault of resort. There are other resorts with better on-property snorkeling. The "needs improvement": -Noise: Some of this is hard to control due to grass roofs. We had one particular night with late night construnction (mini jackhammer) from 11pm to 1am right next door... right on the property. This should be unacceptible. -No gym. Sounds like they are getting one soon. Was disappointed could not use the neighboring gym owned by the same resort. -No fault of Occidental... but there is always a small group that dominates the first club common areas each week that tends to monopolize the amenitites (small wading pool, small # of great chairs, etc). This is not very inviting to the remaining club members. Feels exclusionary despite paying for the same level of service. -Small maintenence items (despite paying annual maintenance fee)... deadlock didn't work, leaky toilet, water stopped working at one point. All in all a very nice trip for our family (and extended family).

    “Beautiful Beach. The resort grounds and lobby are well maintained and nice”

    We stayed there for two weeks. On arrival we were assigned a room that had a musty smell, the bed clothes were damp from humidity and there was a wall unit that was broken and had no drawer. We had paid for a premium room but had difficulty with the front desk staff trying to get this room changed. They told us we would need to pay for a more up-graded room! Eventually, they agreed to change us but we did not get the up-graded room until 7:00 pm that day. The new room was clean and nice but small. We lost one of our cell phones and reported it to the front desk. They told us they did not have it and to keep checking back. We did this at least five times. Almost 48 hours later we tried again and in fact they had it. It had been handed in shortly after we lost it and they had it all the time. That was a frustrating experience. The resort has potential and the set up is nice but the front desk staff need serious training. They do not seem to know what they are doing and are unable to make basic decisions. We were told that the resort is under new management and going through some teething problems. Unfortunately that does not help the guests who have paid a lot of money to stay at the resort. Wi-Fi is not free and the cost of either $10.00 US per day or $50.00 US for two devices for one week. The front desk staff do not always have the codes available and we were constantly asked to return at a later time. The food was mediocre at best. The Asian Restaurant was the best of the A La Carte restaurants. Italian was disappointing with very small portions. The Mexican was average. The buffet was also very average. The bar and waiter staff were all very nice and worked hard. Special mention to Claudia who directs everyone to their tables who was great and also the bar man David at the Amber Bar. There is an issue with beach towels as they seem to run out constantly. We had to wait a whole day before we got one. The pools were nice and the poolside entertainment was good. We did not attend the evening entertainment but heard it was good. The grounds are very well maintained. Bring your own Kleenex and straws as they do not supply these. The only shade at the beach is some young palm trees. They have not updated their photograph showing these. This is definitely only a three star resort.

    “Not a 4 Star more like 2.5 Star”

    Lets start with the obvious, Check in was okay , place looks great in the lobby when you arrive. The buffet is Okay nothing to write Home about , service with waiters was excellent. Room was cleaned well every day. The Grounds are well maintained and always being cleaned and well landscaped. Beach at this resort is kept cleaned. Restaurants: Italian was lacking , when I asked the Italian Captain, who is from Italy, if he felt what was being served was up to par with an Italian Restaurant , He answered that in the beginning he did mention things that needed improvement and basically inferred he was told not to make waves....... Wife order was wrong , My Pizza looked like something out of the frozen supermarket section so the Italian Restaurant should be revamped or closed until further notice! Then on to the worst experience I ever had in Dinning the Oriental: Lets just say All Sushi does not need Cream cheese , The Won Ton soup had so much soya sauce in it tasted like seawater the spring rolls tasted like they were from a frozen box from the supermarket..... The worse part of our experience was of course the desert..... Tempura Ice cream.... Which was in a Cake like structure looking like a Hockey Puck once opened the Ice Cream flowed out like a river!!! Suffice it to say we went to the Buffet. Please note if you want to wowed go to the Mexican Restaurant and do not waste your time at the other two as you will be extremely Disappointed unless of course you are used to Cuban 2 star Venues. The Mexican restaurant you have beautiful view of the Ocean and the service is 4 Star + the food was at the level that I expected and above the rest of this resort. No problem getting chairs on the beach pool looked cleaned. Now for the Entertainment ..... scale of 1 to 10 ... 2! Buffet was ordinary NO wow factor!!! The entertainment staff was too busy yacking away with each other and I found they all looked disinterested. Towel service, Good Luck!!! you better arrive early before they are all gone..... Hotel was only at 60% capacity and they were missing towels by noon every day! When asked the staff they said they advise management of this Hotel regularly of missing towels for the patrons. Shows at night were good most nights. Now for the Waiters on the Beach ....... I saw 1 guy once during the whole week. So if you have been told there is Beach service ........good luck. better get used to going to the bar yourself. The bar service at the Beach Lunch buffet was excellent. Waiters are the same as the Main Buffet so they get to know you by your name after a day. I have stayed with Barceló in the past and been well served ......This is a revamped refurbished Hotel that they probably spent millions face lifting, and painting they should have spent some money on the better menus and training of employees. I have read the positive reviews and I feel there must be another Hotel with the same name as this by far was the worse Hotel I ever stayed at in 20 years of traveling to the Caribbean!!!! The only redeeming factor was the Beach ..... I could have saved 1000$ and gone to Cuba...... If you have choice book any of the RIU and avoid this place unless you have never travelled before!

Then on to the worst experience I ever had in Dinning the Oriental: Lets just say All Sushi does not need Cream cheese , The Won Ton soup had so much soya sauce in it tasted like seawater the spring rolls tasted like they were from a frozen box from the supermarket..... The worse part of our experience was of course the desert..... Tempura Ice cream.... Which was in a Cake like structure looking like a Hockey Puck once opened the Ice Cream flowed out like a river!!! Suffice it to say we went to the Buffet. Please note if you want to wowed go to the Mexican Restaurant and do not waste your time at the other two as you will be extremely Disappointed unless of course you are used to Cuban 2 star Venues. The Mexican restaurant you have beautiful view of the Ocean and the service is 4 Star + the food was at the level that I expected and above the rest of this resort. No problem getting chairs on the beach pool looked cleaned. Now for the Entertainment ..... scale of 1 to 10 ... 2! Buffet was ordinary NO wow factor!!! The entertainment staff was too busy yacking away with each other and I found they all looked disinterested. Towel service, Good Luck!!! you better arrive early before they are all gone..... Hotel was only at 60% capacity and they were missing towels by noon every day! When asked the staff they said they advise management of this Hotel regularly of missing towels for the patrons. Shows at night were good most nights. Now for the Waiters on the Beach ....... I saw 1 guy once during the whole week. So if you have been told there is Beach service ........good luck. better get used to going to the bar yourself. The bar service at the Beach Lunch buffet was excellent. Waiters are the same as the Main Buffet so they get to know you by your name after a day. I have stayed with Barceló in the past and been well served ......This is a revamped refurbished Hotel that they probably spent millions face lifting, and painting they should have spent some money on the better menus and training of employees. I have read the positive reviews and I feel there must be another Hotel with the same name as this by far was the worse Hotel I ever stayed at in 20 years of traveling to the Caribbean!!!! The only redeeming factor was the Beach ..... I could have saved 1000$ and gone to Cuba...... If you have choice book any of the RIU and avoid this place unless you have never travelled before!
