“Excellent place and beach with average service.”

The place: The location, the building and the beaches are excellent. The buildings and gardens are very very well maintained, the beach is incredible, If I were to only qualify this place by location and beach I would rate the place as excellent. The place is also very clean. According to the hotel staff, the hotel was at 92% of its capacity during that week, the place did not look anywhere crowded (maybe a little at the buffets). The service: The service is average, if not less, we arrived at the hotel to the Maya Colonial Lobby, which is were we made our reservation, just to find out that we were moved to the Maya Tropical building. It took us 1.5 hrs. to check in. During our stay the beverages in our room were never replenished we had to call every time for water. At one point at the entrance to the buffet a staff girl asked us if we needed anything to which we replied yes. a daily refill of water, beer and snacks in our room but we did not see any change. The service at the buffets were average so was the food, for what I paid, anybody would expect something better, one of the days the room was cleaned after 6:00 after we called the reception and asked why our room was not yet cleaned. Getting a beverage by the pool is almost impossible, we walked to the bar every time, Luciano the barman was the only one willing to help he did a great job. We were given four passes to restaurants for dinners but when we called to reserve we were told that all the places were booked, only after fighting with the staff were we able to get dinners between 8:00 and 10:00. The girl at the reception could not understand our frustration after she gave us the passes to the restaurants just to tell us that they were booked and no open time for us. The food: The food at the buffets is average, nothing impressive, again for what you pay you should get something better. The food at the restaurants is very good honestly and the service is excellent there, but you only have access to that on a proportion of your stay.

    “The service is outstanding!”

While the beach was amazing as expected, my favorite part of the experience were the friendly and dedicated waiters and waitresses that attended to my every request from the buffet breakfast to sit down dinners, my favorite waiter was this nice man named Gabriel, who works not in the colonial half but in the tropical half of the buffet, specifically waiting tables in the outside seating section in the mornings. He was very friendly and so quick to cater to our orders. There was also a very nice man named David who waited tables in the outdoor restaurant by the beach, the one to the left of the Mariachi, he was there for lunch. I didn't particularly like some of the service at the uspa, however, in particular this one woman named Heleney, who works at the from desk in the uspa, made me extremely upset. She gave me a lot of attitude when I was trying to make an appointment to get a massage, which stressed me out a lot because I have anxiety when making decisions, and getting attitude from a woman at a luxury resort is not what I expected.

    “Daughter's wedding April 10, 2017 was wonderful!”

My daughter and her fiancé were married at the Palace property gazebo on this resort (where they stayed). We all stayed at the Colonial to economize. Understandably, making arrangements at a distance has its challenges, however, the wedding and reception were handled impeccably by wedding coordinator Guillermo Sierra and the wait staff. We had 53 guests. The set up, service and meal selected were lovely. We brought our music and connected with the sound system - no issues at all. A great success by every measure and the week was lovely with friends and family. I am a believer in destination weddings. So much more memorable than a one day event!

“Great trip - Destination Wedding - BEAUTIFUL BREATHETAKING Success!”

I went to the Barcelo Maya Colonial Resort for a destination wedding. As a bridesmaid, I only wanted the best for the bride and groom. I had heard good things about the Barcelo resorts so I was not too worried. Overall, the resort was great and the service was EXCELLENT! I love Mexico and it never disappoints. I stayed in the Colonial side. but the bride and groom were in the Palace side which is even more luxurious. CHECK IN - the check in was rather slow. This is one of my only complaints - that they did not seem very organized, but we arrived in a big group so perhaps that is why. However, as they knew we were coming and were expecting us, they shouldve had more individuals at the reception. POOL AND BEACH - beautiful! picture-perfect. The beach is a bit rocky especially at some points. but it did not defer me from getting into the water and enjoying the sunshine and weather. The waves were sometimes strong but overall the beach was beautiful. The pool is also fantastic. The water is a good temperature,. not too cold or hot. BARS - the bars are good. However. the pool bar especially needs more attentive servers. Some days I could wait an hour before getting served! Unless you had money in your hand, the servers were not quick to help you. Also, Jaguirs is the resort's nightclub. It is fun and most nights has good music! ACTIVITIES - you will not be bored at the resort, that is for sure! They have so many activities, excursions and resources to your availability. Tennis, gym, yoga, water sports, scuba diving, zumba, late night entertainment. and so much more!!! ALSO I HIGHLY suggest the CEYNOTE across the road. This is one excursion we did off the resort - basically it is swimming in natural cave waters. BREATHTAKING! I would do it again and again. it is 18$ American but so worth it. We just walked over and went ourselves./ FOOD - I have been all around the Caribbean and I must say, Mexico tops for best food. You wont be disappointed. The buffets are delicious and there is even a 24/7 hour sports bar with regular pub foods and service. Also AC! WIFI - I paid for a week of wifi. Its about 7$ american per day. Its rather expensive and it is not always working.... it cuts out a fair bit and you have to re-sign in again and again which was annoying to do. Lastly... THE WEDDING - BEAUTIFUL AND BREATHTAKING! Guillarmo was the bride's wedding planner on the resort and he was so helpful and on point/. He was also very attentive and resourceful. Everything went so smoothly. Highly recommend the guy!

    “Beautiful Beach”

I stayed at the Barcelo Maya Riviera Colonial during Spring Break this year with my husband and 2 daughters, ages 7 and 10. The resort had a lot to offer! Overall, I would go back. Check-in - I was nervous about check-in based on some tough reviews of how slow it can be. We did not have that experience. I think it may depend on whether you arrive at the same time as a large shuttle or bus, but we lucked out. We were all checked in within 10 minutes! We were approached by staff as we relaxed at the pool one day and specifically asked about how the check-in process went for us, so it appears the resort is working on this issue for those that experienced it. Ala Carte Restaurants - Based on many reviews, I was concerned about getting reservations at the ala carte restaurants since we were there during a busy week. No issues! My husband went directly to the reservation desk after check-in, and we were able to get reservations at the 4 restaurants we had prioritized at decent times. The quality of the service and food at the ala cartes definitely surpassed my expectations. We have stayed at all-inclusives all around Mexico and the Caribbean, and the food here was absolutely better. I'm sure some of the experience depends on what one orders, but we had great experiences. We enjoyed lobster tail at Mare Nostrum, we had surf & turf (filet and lobster) at Tokyo, we tried the skirt steak and fajitas at Mexico Lindo, and we had grilled shrimp and ribeye at Santa Fe. Overall, Mare Nostrum and Tokyo were our favorites, but all were wonderful. Buffets - The service at the buffets really was second to none. The staff did an amazing job. Food was hit or miss. Meat could be a little dried out, options were some times a little off, pretty typical for a buffet. The buffets were huge, however, so there was always something to be found. Occasionally it just took a little trial and error. Pools - The pools are STUNNING. Well-maintained and beautiful. I was excited to stay at a resort where we didn't have to rise with the sun to get a lounger. While we were there, the Tropical pool was definitely the "party pool" filled with high school and college spring breakers. It was tough to get loungers around that pool, but once we figured out that they were containing the partiers to that area we quickly moved on to the pool at Caribe. Loungers were plenty, and the bars were much easier to access. Kudos to the staff on how effectively they manage the spring break crowd. They had DJs pumping music and fun activities for those that wanted to partake, but they had heavy security watching at all times to maintain safety. Honestly, really impressive. All of the other pools were peaceful and relaxing. Kind of amazing to be able to get whatever experience you were seeking. Beaches - The beach was the prettiest I have ever seen in Mexico. Miles of white sand with gorgeous turquoise water. Absolutely beautiful. The staff did an unbelievable job maintaining the beach area, clearing seaweed as quickly as it may wash up. I would highly recommend bringing water shoes if you intend to swim in front of the Tropical/Colonial resorts. The entrance is rocky, and you will hurt your feet. The beach down by the Caribe/Beach resorts did not have the rocky entrance and was a better option for us. Snorkeling right in front of the resorts was a blast! Lots to see with such easy access. Bars - I am not picky when it comes to drinks, but the drinks here were not very good. The rail tequila was gross. I love tequila, but I couldn't drink this. It had an odd aftertaste that ruined whatever drink it came in. I love vodka lemonade on a hot day, but even that was weird. They somehow had to craft the lemonade, and it was super hit or miss. It looked like they mulled lime with some triple sec or something. Some bartenders knew how to do it, and others didn't. We experienced this with pretty much every cocktail we ordered, no matter how basic. The drinks were just not consistent and often just plain wrong and not drinkable. This needs some attention. Rooms - We were on the 3rd floor of the Jalisco building. I loved the location as we were central in the resort and situated equal distance to both the Colonial and Caribe pools. The room was pretty standard for an all-inclusive, but it was a little disappointing. The pillows and beds are truly awful. Not just firm, but cheap. Our room was also not as clean as I would have hoped. I don't expect maid service to be perfect throughout the stay, but when we first arrived there were sticky drink rings on the desk and near the TV. Gross. Maid service never came twice while we were there, and when they did come, it was definitely sub-standard despite very generous tips. This needs some serious work. Our mini bar, however, was filled every day without any issue. I don't prioritize the room on vacation as I don't spend much time there, but it was surprising to find this given my expectations of the resort. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at the Barcelo, and I would go back. I do think the rooms and the liquor need to be upgraded, or they need to charge less. I wanted to give them 5 stars, but I just couldn't. With some adjustments, this could easily be one of the premier resorts in Riviera Maya.
