Barceló Maya Colonial reviewed by Mary J on . Good for people with kids, not good for others I stayed here in October 2017 at Jalisco 6219. I didn’t like it. “My room had issues”

Over the place is clean, and decent for the price, however that doesn't justify the fact that our problems with the refrigerator in my room were never addressed upon reporting it to the staff (which maintenance never got to work). The other issue is my room only had one working electrical outlet, which didn't go over very well- especially with my teenager. Our other issue was the balcony lights never worked.

    “I'd definitely go back”

The food is really good and with a lot of variety (much better than other places I’ve been), the staff are really friendly, and the grounds are beautiful. Really nice pools. Never crowded during the days we were there. No line ups for drinks or food. Get a Bahama Mama. You won’t be sorry. We ate at the buffet except for one night at the Japanese restaurant (Kyoto). It was really good and the portions were big (again, better than other resorts I’ve been to). Everyone told us to stay at the Palace but we chose the Colonial. I don’t think there is anything worth paying the extra for. The best beach on the resort is at the Colonial. Take bananas from the buffet and go snorkelling near the Tropical. You’ll feed the turtles if you swim out a little deeper. The negative is the uncomfortable bed (I asked for them to bring me something to put under the fitted sheet and they never did). There is plenty to do on the resort but everything costs extra. Water slides, surfing “ride”, haunted house…all extra. At least we didn’t have to pay for the safe in our room (like some other places). We didn’t swim with the dolphins because we didn’t like how small their pools are. It seems cruel. There is a small casino that we went to every night. I have no idea how it works exactly. You give them cash, they give you a card with less than what you paid them (a tax??), then they pay your winnings in Pesos (again with less than you won – another tax?). Make sure to ask for the list of shows and where they are (we had to ask, no one told us). They weren’t bad, as far as resorts go. I’d definitely go back to this resort. It really is beautiful.

    “Great resort, poor staff communication”

This is a fantastic resort overall with great service. However the state of repair of our room was very poor and staff communication was non-existent to very poor leaving us with no water! Eventually this was resolved and we switched rooms. But we never should have been checked into an obviously defective room; the shower hardware was clearly broken for some time and its safe to assume the poor staff communication started before we even arrived. Otherwise a great resort... we will be back but in the future will refuse a room with any deficiencies.

“Big and friendly resort with average food but....”

This was our first time to this resort in the Mayan Riviera. We visited in early November which was a bit stormy. This was our third time to the area so it gave us some perspective for comparison. Firstly, this is a big resort. The Colonial is part of a larger resort of Three main areas. The Palace area is more upscale and the bars and restaurants are restricted to only its guests but you can walk and use their grounds. Otherwise we could use the four buffet restaurants and three beach grills. As we were there for seven days we were entitled to four a la carte dinners plus we received an extra one as they made an error with our room....they gave us one that was already occupied...by someone who was changing at the time....little awkward. Needless to say the hotel was a little shocked at this so they gave us a free dinner at the French a la carte which is in the Palace area. Usually us Colonial plebes would have to pay an extra $20 usd for this privilege but they were so mortified that it was compt'd to us. It is the best restaurant we went to all week, bar none. We were also able to get a table outside near the water so even better. The food was the best prepared compared to any other restaurant in the resort, especially compared to the institutional grade food served at the buffets. It's not bad food, it's just that we noticed the general buffet food to be much better at other resorts, like Valentin. Everything is sort of bland. The other thing about the a la carte restaurants is ......you don't get much food. I admit I'm a healthy eater, as an athlete and this is a consistent beef with me. Even my wife was sometimes hungry after. Luckily, this is an all inclusive resort! So, we just went to the buffet after dinner for a top up. The service everywhere is top notch. Everyone is friendly and truly willing to help you. If you need something ...ask! Even the vendors at the on site Mexican market were friendly, not pushy and willing to bargain. It's a nice market and although you will pay more than if you went off site , it's reasonable considering the cost and effort to leave the resort. The selection is not bad although it tends to cater to Americans. This is all consistent with this being a big resort, that has thought of everything you may want to do or see. It's like a small town. The water activities are plentiful. We kayaked, sailed hobie cats, went snorkelling and even learned how to kite board. The kite boarding was an extra cost but we loved it and plan to continue at home in Canada. Thanks to Flo and Mel for their instruction. Nice people. Also, they have a standing wave facility to try boogie boarding and surfing. Fun! Wave runners, parasail, banana rides, hover boots and scuba are also available along with deep sea fishing at extra cost. You can shore fish and dock fish onsite also. There are accessory trips available off site to cenotes and adventure areas. Check my review of Labnaha cenotes. A great place, run by the Mayans not the big cartels. A great day trip. Although we did not travel with our kids this trip we had friends that did. This is a good place for families with kids all the way up from toddlers to teenagers. There are little water parks, a great couple beaches with rock free areas, calm water areas, kids clubs with child care and activities and teen friendly areas. Although we didn't partake, there are numerous pools and swim up bars and bars scattered around the grounds. There are even small lap pools if you are so inclined. We stayed in the Jalisco building which is a good central location between the beaches, restaurants and fitness/spa area. Of note, we were originally given a room with two double beds which seems to be the default room type. As my wife and I like each other, we wanted a king bed which took some arranging. If this is your preference make sure you request it ahead of time to avoid delays at check in. Overall, a good, friendly resort that caters to an enjoyable visit that doesn't require you to leave the resort to have fun. I just wish the food was better.

    “Breakfast Buffet”

My family and I love the Barcelo Maya Tropical/Colonial. We stayed from Nov 12-18. Our experience for the buffet was extremely above and beyond due to the waiter Alfredo Bacab!! After the first day he served us every morning with a smile conversation, had our table ready with our coffee and juice without asking. Hard to believe he could remember our wants with so many others he waited on. And we where a party of 7!! Thanks Alfredo and we will see you soon.
