    “Wonderful experience!”

This was our second visit to this all inclusive resort. The first time was when it had just opened and was about 3 months old. It is showing it's age since then, but is still well maintained and very clean. The employees were wonderful to us and did their jobs with a smile. We were treated like royalty! Hats off to Jesus Martinez and Cesar Magana for their excellent service at the restaurant Caribeno, Ruben Altunar at the Kyoto Restaurant, and Lucio at the La Hacienda Buffet. They truly made our stay enjoyable. We highly recommend this resort. The 1 hour drive from the airport is not fun, but it's worth it! There is a lot of walking involved as everything is placed far from the rooms. Bring good walking shoes!

“3rd Time Back & Better Than Before”

We stayed Feb 4-11 the in Club Premium and travelled with Sunwing because they would have us at the resort and checked in in time for some sun and supper. The only problem I have with Sunwing is that they didn't offer the regular rooms back in October and only had the Club Premium rooms listed and then as we got closer to the date they listed the cheaper rooms. Not nice guys. Other than that, the flight was good and transfer was in a smaller shuttle van instead of a big bus dropping people at numerous resorts and was quick. Check-in was easy in the Club Premium lounge but we also had no problems with the front desk during our previous 2 visits to the Palace. When we got there the front desk wasn't busy and would have been just as easy but the Premium lounge has chairs, couches tables, bar and snacks to keep the family happy while handling the check-in details and restaurant bookings. The grounds are perfect as usual with somebody always sweeping, trimming, tiling, painting or otherwise tending to things but not in your face, noisy work. I just noticed because I do building maintenance. One afternoon we walked around a bunch of other areas of the resort and just stopped in at many different bars along the way for a drink and to admire the different finishes, woodwork, lighting, furniture, etc. Nice huge resort so even if you're there as a group you can escape as a couple and do your own thing. We had rooms 8616 and 8614 on the second floor overlooking the pool and swim-up bar past that. Air conditioner worked awesome, the safe had trouble when we first arrived but made a call to front desk and it was fixed by the time we got back from the beach to get ready for supper. Probably just batteries and worked great the rest of the time. The beds were comfortable and clean with lots of pillows of different fluffiness. Enough TV channels in English and Spanish if you have time for TV. Great private bathrooms with double sliding doors, double sink, separate toilet room, tub and rainhead shower with shower gel, shampoo and conditioner in a dispenser. Never ran out of hot water. Lots of towels available and pretty nice slippers and bathrobes, one of which somehow got into a suitcase for the trip home. Nice candles on the wall by the shower but if you leave them burning all night they'll run down the tiles. Whoops. The maid cleaned it up no problem and I suspect it happens a lot. Balcony was pretty spacious and because we were in a little jut out part of the building we had a side opening also which was good for airflow when drying swimsuits on the wall mounted rack. 2nd floor was also good for keeping pool floaties on the balcony. Food at buffets and a la cartes was excellent and is definitely a step up from other parts of the Barceló complex. Steaks and seafood available for fresh grilling at the buffet if you choose that instead of reservations for supper as well as fresh pasta station including good gluten free choices. Waiters at the restaurants were knowledgeable about which dishes contained gluten. One of us has a severe nut allergy and we were given a letter at check-in to show workers but we didn't need it because the wait staff speak English well and let us know which dishes could contain nuts. We did the French (Brasserie), Brazilian (Rodizzio), Japanese Teppanyaki (Tokyo) and Seafood (Caribe) and all were great with good portion sizes and flavours. A couple nights I ate so much that I felt a food coma coming on so finished with a double shot of espresso and a shot of Baileys for a wake up. Club premium includes free room service which was good for my daughter who is struggling with a gluten intolerance and sometimes needs to have food available at strange times. Also good for night owls like us was the 24 hour sports bar called Strikers. Actually doing some bowling there seemed expensive at $15/person per game but they have lots of TVs running with a big section of couches all arranged like bleachers in front of a real big screen for Superbowl and event watching. There are a bunch of arcade type games to play and collect tickets to trade for trinkets behind the counter. The small buffet there was pretty good too with chicken wings, ribs, nachos, salads, deserts, etc. Pools are unheated but warm up from the sun after lunch. The hot tub in the adult pool is heated and, while not "hot", is noticeably warmer than the attached pool and the back massage jets are strong and will work out the kinks. We rented a palapa at the adult pool one day for the afternoon but the bartender never even asked our room number so apparently just let us use it and we never had to pay. They're nice because you have a spot for family to meet up, drop off snorkel gear, get some shade, etc before taking off to get a snack or do whatever. Drinks all over the complex are as strong as you want them. I drink doubles (which usually ended up being triples or.....) Bartenders Oscar (Coco Bar) and Ulysses at the Adult Pool bar (Cielo) are the personalities that bring people back. You'd see people with the Bubba Kegs but I prefer the little trips to the bar to see/meet people and talk to the bartenders as well as a nice fresh drink every time. Tried to get adult wristbands for the 17 year olds like I read people can do during spring break. We were denied but the kids seemed to find a drink if and when they wanted one. The bartenders keep an eye out for anybody getting goofy and we never saw anybody out of control, at least not at the Palace. Nightly shows were good again but seemed to be a little more Spanish singing this time. Still good but different from last time. I always mean to check out the shows at other sections of the resort but after supper when you're looking for air conditioned comfort and great sound the Monte Alban Theatre can't be beat. The female show dancers can also be seen later in the disco go-go dancing on top of speakers for a little while to add a sexy vibe. The beach was nice with no seaweed problems that you'll read about from last year. Warm ocean like usual with plenty of fish not too far out that like buns and sea turtles that will eat bananas out of your hand, no excursion required. They run some sort of machine over the sand at night that seems to collect up cigarette butts and stuff because the beach is really clean. Also, once the sand has been disturbed the sand piper birds move in and basically cover every inch of sand (judging by their footprints) eating bugs. Sunwing and others let you check a bag with the family's snorkel gear for free so bring your own to avoid going to the equipment guys to book out a snorkel set for only an hour. There are plenty of other activities to do like sailing, water bikes and stuff but we never seem to get to doing them, maybe next time. Also want to rent the seadoos for a while next time, the guys out there jumping waves looked fun. One activity that I was looking forward to for my daughter and her boyfriend was the Flo-Rider. It costs $20 extra but both 17 year olds thought it was great and well worth the price. It's not easy to master and there are thrills and spills. The rest of the new water park seemed good for older kids too and they said a couple of the water slides were pretty fast. Wife and daughter did the dolphin "trainer for a day" at the dolphinarium and had fun again. You get much much more time in the water with the dolphins than the off resort excursions. Daughter and boyfriend did the in-pool scuba lesson for fun one afternoon like we did last time. Did one shopping trip into Playa Del Carmen and just took the shuttle bus out to the resort entrance and hopped on the collectivo for a ride in to 5th Avenue for 35 pesos per person. On the way home we grabbed a cab for easier and quicker return for 300 pesos but I gave the driver 400 because he stepped up the speed to get us back in time for supper reservations. We paid our phone company for cell phone travel plans that turned out to be a joke with the limited data they allowed but it was okay because Club Premium rooms include 2 free wifi codes per room and we had wifi all over the resort with no problem. Overall the Premium room was nice to experience and the pool view was nice but for the most part the regular room we had with jungle view last time was the exact same room, just minus the free room service, bottle of tequila and a little better view. There were also discounts at the gift shop and other places if you have the Premium wrist bands. Premium for the group of 4 added $2000 to our total so not sure if I would book it again at full price. Next time I'll be tempted to book closer to departure date and try for a deal. But YES! There will be a next time.

“Would love to return despite rough check in and check out”

Pros: Breathtakingly beautiful property. Gorgeous huge room and bathroom and all very clean. Nice gizmo on patio for drying clothes. Friendly staff. Great and plentiful food (even if some of it was labeled incorrectly i.e., pecans were labeled walnuts, brownie was called fondant – but maybe these are translation glitches). Buffets were arrayed with stunning carvings of various melons and artful garnishes. Even the sandwich meats and cheeses were individually-folded into appealing shapes (but I mean, really: Who is eating cold cuts when they can have lobster??) Our favorites: Guacamole, pico de gallo, flan, hojarascas, fresh tropical fruits, steaks cooked to order, ceviche, ice cream. A la carte restaurants were nice but honestly, it was just an excuse to dress up and be served because the food at the buffet(s) was just as good. We made our dinner reservations at the beginning of our trip but restaurants were far from full. Beach was stunning and we had no trouble finding lounge chairs. The bar is convenient to both beach and pool and pina coladas were yummy and STRONG (but bartenders are more than happy to ease off on the rum if you ask). The travel time walking from our rooms to the beach and restaurants was on the long side - approximately 5 minutes (and our building was relatively close) - but I was glad for a little exercise and a chance to work off some calories while enjoying the flora, fauna, art, and ocean breezes. Very attractive décor throughout. We had a 1-year-old with us who wasn’t old enough to enjoy the kids pool/play area to the max but I bet older kids would love it. We had a great experience at the walk-in clinic on the resort. The young female doctor went out of her way to locate an over-the-counter drug we needed – calling around to various pharmacies. She then called a taxi for us, waited for the taxi with us, gave the driver instructions (verbal and written), wrote the name of the pharmacy and pharmacist on a piece of paper for us, and sent us on our way. And the taxi driver went into the pharmacy with us to ensure that we got what we needed! He was so awesome that we arranged for him to take us to the airport on our last day. My husband enjoyed snorkeling and even took some lessons. He and other family members loved feeding the sea turtles and looking at the tropical fish. The ladies experienced the spa where there are some awesome “therapy” pools in addition to a variety of saunas and showers. My sister had “the best massage of her life”. Cons: Topping the list was the slow check-in. We were ushered to the premium reception area where, yes, we had nice array of food and drink available to us but there isn’t enough alcohol on the planet to negate the experience. No one wants to wait over an hour to get to their room after a long day of travel. Adding insult to injury, there were 4 children under the age of 10 in the reception area – doing what antsy children do – while their dad took his (LONG!) turn at the reception desk. No staff member seemed to be in charge, it was difficult to know who was next, and the instructions given to each member in our party were inconsistent; some were handed luggage tags to place on their luggage and others of us had to look for the tags in the envelope. Our luggage was back in the lobby where we were instructed to leave it so we all had to return to the lobby to attach the tags to our bags. While property maps were included in our envelopes, we had no idea where our rooms were located. I think that an escort would have been nice. It was quite chaotic and nerve-wracking. The checkout process was a close second. We were given mixed signals about what to do – where to go, where to leave luggage, how and when to pay the balance, who was authorized to sign off on the bill, etc. Minor cons: No exhaust fan in bathroom. Room could only be improved with a means of closing off suite from bed area so that it’s possible to turn on a lamp and read without disturbing someone who is sleeping. I expected it to be expensive but sunscreen purchased in one of the hotel shops was US $20.

“Fourth Trip to the Palace Deluxxe”

Services and amenities are always extremely good to excellent. The rooms are well maintained and the restaurants, and even the buffets, are consistently great, with superior service and delicious food. Then there the bars...really a highlight! The Carey Bar (Lobby) and El Cielo Bar (Adult swimming pool) are as good as it gets...top shelf all the way. And, of course, the people. The entire staff is friendly, and go out of their way to make the stay not just enjoyable, but memorable. A special "shout out" to a few of them...Ulysses, Consuelo, and Maudillo at El Cielo, Jonathon and Angel at Carey, and Lucio at the Hacienda. 5 stars each! We will be back!

    “best all inclusive”

I have been to the Palace 6 times over 5 years also have been to a hand full of others up and down the coast and the Barcelo Palace is by far the best. I don't think you can get everything anywhere at this price point, but for me the Palace checks the most boxes by far. ROOMS BEACH FOOD BOOZE ! OH and the largest pools you will ever see. The rooms are fantastic, large, 2 sinks in bathroom so we can both get ready at the same time, separate large shower plus bath tub, no tub to climb into for shower The specialty restaurants are for the most part great, the only one I will not do is the Mexican, have tried twice and just don't get it. The French is my favorite. The best beach by far, some might like waves to frolic in but for me snorkling right off the beach with coral to attract fish and have to mention the large sea turtle always around in chest deep water is great. The true post card color water with all the different blues & greens you can imagine and usually very clear. Also a mile and a half long or more The Coco bar is always a good time during the day while venturing on and off the beach, I have to talk about the bartenders, they are great! Can't remember them all but LOUIS and ISMAIL really stick out,Hi Guys from Geno. The Barcelo is huge but once you figure out the short cuts or use the double decker bus you will appreciate it. The one thing I would like is a more evening entertainment at the Palace, maybe live music, we always find ourselves venturing to other lobby bars or the mall looking for evening fun and not always finding it. Shop smart for the right price because they do vary on all sights and seem to change often. Just book it !
