    “WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY!”

First off, I have no complaints of the staff and outdoor area of Barcelo! All the staff were very helpful and courteous, the beaches were beautiful, the pools were big and very clean! I've heard only good things about Barcelo.. BUT.... I WILL never return to Barcelo Maya Grand Resort in Riviera Maya. You would think travelling with a 21 month old was stressful enough, what about 4 rooms in 2 days on top of that! We started in the Tropical, first room had issues with the AC so everything was wet; the floors, the bed, table tops, EVERYTHING! We had to keep our sandals on because our slippers soaked right through. There was mold; in the shower, on the shower head, mirror stand, a clump of someone else's hair on the floor, pubic hair under the toilet seat, the list goes on. Day 2, they moved us to another room and upgraded us to premium level. No moisture problem, we were able to walk around bare feet and with the slippers, everything looked fine, except the bed skirt had mold on it, no big deal we've already seen worse! So before dinner we stopped into the lobby to ask for the sheets to get changed. When we returned from dinner, the sheets were not changed and we also noticed a colony of ants scattering as the lights came on. I had to put the baby to sleep so hubs went down to front desk and informed them, they called up to the room and mentioned they wouldn't be able to move us to another room till morning. Day 3, we got transferred to Maya Beach and now the 3rd room was 2 double beds when we've always had 1 king, the light in the washroom was flickering, the coffee flask was chipped, and blood on the duvet, so I called down and they transferred us to our 4th room! By the 4th room, I just gave up, there were no bugs or mold but just dirty! I ended up spending the rest of my day cleaning and disinfecting the whole room! I spoke with the assistant manager at Maya Beach and she explained that at the time I checked in they didn't have a king room available, which was never mentioned to me.. They didn't offer to place us in a better room or to another hotel, they kept telling me they're completely booked and this is all they can do for us. They told us they couldn't do anymore for us because they already gave us the premium level upgrade after our first incident, but what about the next 3 incidents? BUT I asked if we paid for an upgrade to the palace if they'll have a room for us? And of course they did; if we paid! Along these times of complaints I kept asking to speak with the GM of the resort NOT just the hotel alone, but they kept telling me he was either in a meeting or not on site. Clearly trying to avoid talking to me! I am so disappointed in how management dealt with us, I feel cheated and taken advantage of. If we didn't have our toddler with us I wouldn't have been so picky. They didn't care that my baby had technically been travelling for 48hrs because of all the packing and unpacking, moving to different rooms and hotels. They had absolutely no consideration to how stressful it was being trapped in disgusting rooms! It felt like they really didn't care how we felt at the end of the day because they already gave us a premium upgrade. I will definitely NOT be returning and also NOT recommending to my friends or family.

“A beautiful property, with a poor welcome and average food and activities”

I've tried to include helpful information, and photos in this review, if you decide to visit this resort. We visited Barcelo Maya Tropical for 6 nights. We had originally booked Colonial, but were reassigned to Tropical upon arrival. I did request a high-floor, away from the theatre (which we got), and this may have had something to do with the reassignment. Obtaining information about most things at the resort is challenging. Often things were not communicated well, or at all. The resort huge and is made up of 5 "resorts" : Palace, Colonial, Tropical, Caribe and Beach. If you stay at the latter 4, you don't have access to the Palace, but have access to the other resorts. While there are 4 resorts, Colonial and Tropical are pretty much one resort, and Caribe and Beach are another. The grounds are very well kept, and the staff work very very hard to keep everything looking good. We thought Caribe had the nicest facilities. The lobby/buffet area of both Beach and Caribe had all recently been updated, but Caribe seemed most central. We didn't see the rooms, but probably spent the most time in the Caribe area. Colonial and Tropical seemed a little more dated, but were still nice. BEACH: There are essentially 2 beaches : one on the Tropical and Colonial side and one in the Caribe/Beach side. They are both beautiful and you can easily walk from one to the other in about 7-10 minutes. There are rocks in parts of the main swimming area on both beaches. Unless you have soft feet - you don't need water shoes, just be ready for a few rocks. The sea was not flat - there were small waves, and we didn't find good snorkeling during our trip. We did enjoy swimming but the sea was a little rougher than we had previously experienced in Rivera Maya. There were plenty of chairs, and the trees provided pretty good shade, although you did have to move every now and again to stay in the shade as the sun moved. FOOD: The buffets at Colonial and Tropical (C/T) are joined and have the exact same food and theme as each other. The buffets at Caribe and Beach (C/B) are not joined but are exactly the same. You thus essentially have 2 buffets to choose from each day. The dinners are themed, again the C/T have one theme and C/B have another. Guest services should be able to tell you what the themes are, but we were unable to get an answer each time we asked. My recommendation would be to physically walk to the buffets to check the themes if that's important to you. Honestly, the themes didn't alter the food that much, it was pretty much the same with some small variations. The food in the buffets is very average. Not terrible, but not amazing. (On a random note - we found the chicken and cheesecake to be very good) Things are very badly labeled, so it can be challenging to figure out what food is what. Be cautious if you have allergies, since cross contamination could happen easily. Service at the buffets is very good. We got 3 "a la carte" passes and booked straight away at guest services. I'd recommend doing this right after checking in, since reservations fill up quickly. There are 8 restaurants to choose from and guest services has menus for them all. It's impossible to figure out the themes just from their names, so look at the menus. We ate at La Trattoria (Italian) , La Fuentes (Spanish) and Sante Fe (Steakhouse). The food and service was very good, but La Trattotia was hands down the best. There are also 4 "snack bars", one on each resort - right close to the beach and pools. They serve lunch and snacks from 10.30am - 6.30pm. You can wander off the beach and enjoy a hamburger or hotdog in a more informal atmosphere. They also have the nicest settings, being right on the beach and open-air. The open - air areas in the buffets and restaurants were "smoking areas". For non-smokers who want to enjoy the fresh air - this sucks and Barcelo should look at making a change to this policy. We sat outside a few times and mostly got lucky with not having smokers around us, but there were a few times we were smoked out. We also felt that (other than the snack bars), the use of outdoor space was a little strange. It would have been great to enjoy an evening meal or drink overlooking the ocean/beach, but all eating venues close to the beach closed at 6.30. Dress code in the buffet is casual. In the a la carte restaurants, men are supposed to wear long pants, closed shoes and a shirt (no t-shirt). We saw plenty of people who didn't dress according to code and get away with it. SHOWS There are 2 theaters that have night time entertainment. There is a pre-show and a feature show. Again, one theatre is on the C/T side and one is on the C/B side. The shows pretty much swap between the 2 theaters. We saw the Mexican Fiesta show, the Michael Jackson show and Fantasia (a Disney mash up show). The shows were pretty good and those three were clean. The Mexican first show was the best. Be sure to catch the pre show with the singers before the Mexican show, they were incredible. We walked out of one or two shows due to them not being family friendly, but the three referenced above were okay. ATMOSPHERE The resort had an interesting mix of people. It had more of a party atmosphere at the pools during the day. It wasn't insane, but people were drinking pretty heavily and smoking in the pools - not a romantic or kid-friendly atmosphere. At times, it wasn't the classiest of atmosphere, and if I had kids, I wouldn't want them around the pool area. This did seem limited to the pool areas, and some of the bars. I also really didn't enjoy people smoking at the pools and on the beach - the resort would be better if it didn't allow this. OTHER THINGS TO KNOW - You are given towel cards to swap in for towels, one at a time, one per person. Twice, fresh towels were not available. It's a pretty dumb system, since we regularly saw people grab more towels, or just leave their towels at the beach. The resort threatens to charge you if you fail to return your towel or towel card, but who knows if they actually do. - The Maya Mall complex is pretty cool, but almost nothing is free/included. Mini golf is free before 7PM, and is worth doing. The mall bar is one of the nicer areas and worth a visit. - Spanish is the preferred language at this resort. Obviously, this is not a bad thing, since you are in Mexico, but just be aware that most announcements were first given in Spanish, and then briefly recapped in English. Almost all the staff spoke English, and all written material is provided in 5 languages. - There are PCs in guest services you can use for free to check in to your flight. - The Gym is free, new and very very good! - The dolphin show is short, but cool. You can pay a fortune to swim with the dolphins ($100+), or you can watch the show for free. - The restaurants and bars (excluding pool bars) do a good frappachino. - The bartenders and waiters are exceptionally good. We never waited longer than 2 mins for a drink and the waiters were all friendly, never got our order wrong and worked very hard. We tipped, but this was never demanded or expected. BAD THINGS - The resort does an especially bad job at "welcoming" you. Front desk and guest services sucked - they were unfriendly and often didn't know answers to basic questions. The initial welcome when you arrive consists of asking you for your last name, telling you some basic info, strapping on a wrist band and that's it. No warm welcome, and not a good first impression. - The Hostesses at the a la carte restaurants were also pretty bad at extending a welcome. After being seated, we waited 20-30 minutes at both La Trattoria and La Fuentes to be served. Once the service started, it was great, but it was still a long time to wait with little service. - I don't know if the resort suffered from a "faucet fiend" the week before we arrived, but in EVERY public bathroom, one of the faucets was broken - very strange. - The activities program really sucked. They were pretty much only sports and random games, nothing really unique or interesting that we had seen at other resorts. There was also no information about WHERE anything was to be held. We tried to go to trivia, but couldn't find out where it was. - Some little things they are not included are really irritating (room service, wifi, bowling), I wish they didn't try and nickle and dime you for things that are included at other resorts, it really would make the whole experience better. - The $1000 resort credit is a scam, and is honestly insulting. It's a brochure that offered percentages off pretty much everything in the resort (which means that they are charging a standard price, but just making it seem like a deal). - Like I mentioned, getting information is tough. We battled to find out some basic information and had to hunt to figure some stuff out. SUMMARY We had a good time at Barcelo. The people here work very hard and it's a beautiful resort. So why the 3 stars? We probably wouldn't return for a number of reasons, but food, atmosphere and lack of activities are among them. The beach was beautiful, but not amazing if you enjoy snorkeling. While the hospitality at the bars and restaurants was good, it was lacking in other areas of the resort. We never really felt very welcomed, and we never really felt at home. You could probably do a little better somewhere else, and it's likely worth spending a little extra to stay somewhere a little nicer.

    “Beach getaway gone RIGHT”

We just came back from the best ever resort vacation. The beach is fantastic - clean white sand, warm crystal blue water - a bit rocky in certain places so make sure to bring water shoes. Plently of beach chairs with adequate shade with the numerous palm trees. The pool was equally as great. The middle pool, where we spent all of our days, was huge which was great because it was never crowded. Two wet bars on each end of them so you always had access to drink no matter which side you were on. The drinks were great- they offered both dark and regular corona and tons of tasty mixed drinks- but slow coming if you got them from the bars. However, I do have to say, our server Daysi Ixba, was the best of all. She always had a smile on her face and positive throughout the day even in the blaring sun asking us if there was anything she could bring us. May I add that we were a group of 23 which can sometimes be hard to handle but she was fantastic. We can't say enough about her and her sweetness. The rooms were nice - cleaned daily. Fernanda Barahana, our room keeper, was great. She maintained our room fresh every day and always was very nice if we crossed paths. Each room was equipped with a safe and a fridge that is kept well stocked with soda, juices, water and beer! The actual wait staff at the buffets and restaurants were fantastic and always on the ball. The resort is huge. Restaurants are all over the campus so don't bring heels! Lobby is very pretty and all the tile floors throughout the resort were very well kept. Internet is not included in the base package so we did upgrade to have that benefit. Overall, we had a wonderful time and really enjoyed all that the resort and area had to offer. Enjoy the beauty of the area as it is gorgeous. We would go back in a heartbeat.

    “Wonderful!”

This resort was great. From Nancy at the front desk to the pool bartender everyone was pleasant and professional. Rooms were very big we had two room 7160 and 7170 these room were close to the lobby. They were a five minute walk to the beach and pool area. The pool area had plenty of chairs under cover but you had to get there early to find seat under cover. We saw some chair with towels on them all day and nobody using them. We choose to get chair right by the pool on the beach under a big palm tree. Drinks at the bar were great the electric lemonade was yummy. I would suggest that they place clear bag around to put cups in when done with your drink. Yes their were people that pick them up but I think a collection area would make people clean up themselves. The food from buffet to specialty restaurants was delicious. We ate at three specialty restaurants Koto, Mexican and Capri all had great food and service. Overall this report is great, big and wonderful from wait staff to management everyone made our trip.
