    “Peaceful and Relaxing Getaway”

    My husband and I recently returned from our fifth trip to the Royal Hideaway. This adult only resort is our favorite escape from winter. As soon as we are greeted by Manuel at the entrance we begin to unwind. Everything is taken care of for their guests. Our building concierge this trip was Joanna. She immediately helped us make our dinner reservations for the week. She managed to get us a reservation at Las Pallazos for Valentine's Day dinner which was fabulous. She was always there to help us with any questions or requests. Joanna is, by far, the best concierge we've had at Royal Hideaway. All the employees were helpful and friendly, as usual. The resort has recently changed ownership. It has undergone a complete makeover. Rooms have been redone and exteriors freshened. There is now daily entertainment in the afternoon by the main pool. We do miss the lunches that used to be prepared pool side. Now one must go the the Grill to have lunch. We enjoyed all the restaurants; The Grill and Las Pallazos being our favorites. I didn't use the Spa this trip. However I did have a massage on the beach one day which was great. We have been many places in Mexico and the Caribbean over the years; but we keep coming back to the Royal Hideaway. It's consistent service and attention to detail is what makes it a place to which we will always return.

    “Some improvements under new management, some changes not for the better”

    This was our second visit to the Royal Hideaway. Some improvements under the new management are: 1. POOLSIDE ENTERTAINMENT: At 4:00 daily, they have a fun show at the pool such as a saxophone player, a Mayan show, a circus, and our favorites, the singing divas who got a lot of people dancing. We also enjoyed the guacamole-making and tequila-tasting on Wednesday. We really enjoyed poolside snack and drink service, plus surprises such as fruit kebabs, a guy who wiped down sunglasses, ice cream, etc. Unfortunately, I had to be out of the room by 7 A.M. to get loungers by the infinity pool. (At least I got to see a gorgeous sunrise over the ocean.) On a newsletter and in various places on the resort, the Royal Hideaway says it will remove objects placed on chairs, but we noticed people leaving stuff on chairs for hours; they don't seem to enforce this. Beach loungers were always available, though the front row filled up by 9:00. The water is turquoise with a comfortable swimming temperature in February and the beach is large, clean, and the sand is soft under your toes. It's wonderful that this is an adults-only resort. It maintains its classy, quiet, romantic vibe. 2. MUCH-IMPROVED DRINK SERVICE: Last time, we walked from the beach to the bar to get drinks. This time, service was terrific on the beach and by the pool. They'll also bring you a wide selection of food; we especially liked the nachos and chicken tenders. 3. RENOVATIONS are all done. The Allegria Bar got a sprucing-up and the addition of a sports bar in the back. They no longer have a concierge at each building-- it seems to be one for every two buildings--but this didn't affect us since we rarely needed one anyway. Some things we didn't like as much this time: 1. MAINTENANCE OF THE PROPERTY: The large hot tub near the infinity pool had several broken jets. The three smaller hot tubs on the edge of the beach all work, have three different temperatures, and are still on after dark, which was fun. The jacuzzi tub in our room didn't work. They sent someone right away to fix it after we said something, but it still didn't work. We made another request the next day, they sent someone again, and it turned on, but the jets didn't turn off. Also, at check-in, they asked if we wanted a daily newspaper. We said yes, but we never received one. I loved the floaties on the pool two years ago, but they're gone. 2. DINNER RESERVATIONS: AARGH! Last time, I emailed my reservation requests a week before we got there and everything was set. This time, I emailed and got no reply. I sent another email. No reply. I called, and got connected to a phone that rang and no one picked up. I called again, and by then, I could only get 8:00 reservations. We showed up at 8:00 one night and they told us our reservation was at 6:00. Fortunately, they took us anyway, but the reservation situation was kind of stressful. Make sure you start working on reservations way ahead of your trip. They need to let people know exactly what the policy is-- when is the ideal time to make reservations, and what's the best way to do it? The people who work at the resort-- lobby, restaurant staff (we especially liked Erick at Las Ventanas), bartenders, concierges (Adrian was terrific) work really hard and are very pleasant. The issues I mentioned seem to be more with management. 3. CHANGE IN MENU: The breakfast buffet has fewer items and was lower-quality. It was standard breakfast food on Sterno, plus the pick-your-own omelet option. For lunch at the Deck, they no longer had some of the seafood options I fondly remember such as shrimp ceviche, though we enjoyed the fun food, especially jalapeño poppers and pizzas (a new addition) and fabulous chips and guac.Dinner at Las Ventanas was of the quality of a fine restaurant. All our dinners were of the phenomenal quality we remembered from our previous trip. Unfortunately, Bar Allegria no longer has the extensive martini menu, but the bartender still makes fun martinis on request; we especially liked chocolate and orange. In a nutshell, if you're burned out and want a quiet, relaxing escape with a stunning beach, lovely, hardworking people, excellent mojitos, and wonderful dinners, this is your place.Prices were also lower than what we paid two years ago. We were, however, a little disappointed with the issues I listed above. Would we come back? Maybe.

    “A class of its own”

    We returned yesterday from an awesome vacation at Royal Hideaway. This property is first class and the people are even better. The BEST food you will ever find at an all inclusive!! There is no need to look anywhere else! Many of the couples we met are repeat guests. Here are a few people who went above & beyond: - Joanna who is Conceirge in building 24. She is just amazing!! So attentive to our needs, warm heart & incredible at her job! Request Joanna in building 24 when booking!! - Cesar who is the pool Conceirge. Incredible young man with a great smile & personality!! Cesar is always checking on people and serving them, first class!! - Christian who is the manager of The Grill. Amazing man, passionate leader and very attentive to detail. Christian and his team offer service unmarked at any fine dining establishment with a very personal touch, they know your name!! - Domingo who is server for dinner at The Grill. Domingo is just incredible as he makes you laugh, while being one of the best servers in my 50 years of being on this earth!! There are so many more we would love to mention but I think you can see; we love the Royal Hideaway and their people!!!! I guarantee you will not be unhappy!!     “A wonderful week”

    We spent a week here with another couple and had a great, relaxing time. The beach is the most beautiful I've ever seen in Mexico and it is kept clean and pristine everyday. I can echo all the positives on other reviews; the shower requires a bit of a learning curve - turn the hot all the way up and ease the cold until comfortable...there may be a cold surge or two but it's better than getting scalded. The pool chair game exists - the pool guys will hold a chair for you if you slip them some cash the night before. The food is superb, as is the presentation and service, with one exception- I cannot understand why a 4 star resort that prides itself on their restaurants serves some low-grade margarine instead of butter. The Italian restaurant, Palazzo, does offer an oil & vinegar option for the bread but otherwise it's a really bad margarine trying to masquerade as butter. We enjoyed the entertainment by the pool and in the evenings and would definitely return.

    “A Week in Paradise”

    The hotel functions almost seamlessly. It is sparklingly clean, and its grounds are beautifully maintained. Every employee I encountered was friendly, gracious , and eager to be helpful. I was particularly impressed with the Activities team who operate in the pool area, especially Edith, Cesar, and John; they are devoted to making the resort experience rich. I did stretching and water aerobics every day. The only problem: guests reserving multiple lounges near the pool for hours that they weren't using them, was solved during my stay by the hotel's publicizing a policy that made the selection fairer and seemed to work very well. The food is very good as well as beautifully presented, and the variety, extensive. The diverse restaurants for dinner provided interesting and sophisticated choices. I tried the Chef's Table for which there's an upcharge, and it was a lifetime experience--6 courses prepared before my eyes, served with flourish, each one explained by the chef, Guillaume, photograph worthy and delicious. Each of the 10 villas is served by a concierge who will handle dinner reservations and try to solve whatever problem you bring them. Adrian, William, and Marcello were helpful, friendly, and gracious. Because the hotel has only 200 rooms, there's an intimacy not usually encountered at Playacar resorts. I hope they don't expand. I plan to go back next year.
