“Lovely resort - Excellent Service! ”

We visited the Royal Hideaway the first full week of February, arriving Super-bowl Sunday. Check in was smooth and lovely and our room was ready upon arrival (we arrived at 3pm). The resort is on the smaller side, so walking from the entrance to the beach is rather short. We were placed in a room closest to the beach as we had requested. The rooms smelled new. The decor was lovely. The bathroom was large. Considering they had undergone renovations, certain parts of the bathroom should have been updated as well. The jacuzzi tub is just a bathtub with jets, not the 2 person large one. The tub was in shoddy condition as were the double sinks. The mirror and windows in the bathroom needed replacement too. For the amount of money a week cost here, I expected a bit more. The shower was in good condition, although there was a smell coming from the drain - which is typical I find in Mexico. A touch of shampoo in the drain and it makes it much nicer. As the resort is in Playacar, it's about a 20 minute walk to 5th Ave. We would take a cab into town for 90 pesos (at the bottom of 5th) or 150 pesos to go to the north end (34th and 5th). I would recommend paying in pesos as if we weren't, the 150 pesos ride would have cost $10 USD. We went into town every evening for dinner except Tuesday, where we went to see the show at the resort. The food was good. It was a set menu and lamb was the main. The town of Playa del Carmen is very safe 5th avenue (La Quinta) is pedestrian traffic only. Lots of shops and restaurants. It has gotten increasingly higher end over the years but it is still affordable depending on where you go. If you head up to 10th avenue, cafes and restaurants are even better priced The service at the resort was excellent. Whether on the beach, by the pool or at breakfast/lunch. You are able to be served food by the pool or on the beach so no need to go to the restaurant (which is right by the pool and beach anyway if you prefer to sit and eat at the table). Drinks were excellent and I was never worried as all the alcohol was top shelf. Excellent Don Julio margaritas on the rocks! Our own concierge, located in our building, was very attentive. Jonathan noticed we did not consume our bottle of sparkling wine and he offered to replace it with something else. I opted for a chardonnay. It was a lovely gesture on his part. Carlos, the egg expert, was lovely every morning, cooking my eggs just to my liking. The service at the restaurant was always great! I was very impressed with how attentive and genuine the staff were. Special mention John and Carlos and the rest of the beach/pool crew. Always helping set us up with towels and shade. And Jose and Julio at the bar! I did get in contact with the resort a week before our arrival to make reservations for dinner in advance. The representative sent me a form to fill out listing my preferences. When I arrived they did not have it on file, which was a bit frustrating, as we were not able to make reservations for dinner at times that we preferred. In the end, the food quality at the restaurants in Playa del Carmen was excellent and we were happy to have gone off resort. But this is something that the resort needs to get on top of. Apparently I am not the first person this has happened to. The first two evenings were rather windy (in a good way) and there were no signs of mosquitoes. The 3rd night there was one that got in and feasted. There is a ceiling fan in the bedroom that we began to use after that. So I would recommend that if you are concerned, to bring repellent. All in all we had a lovely time. We enjoyed the lovely beach - keep in mind that there's a sand bar so as you keep walking in, once you're about neck deep, keep going and the water comes back up to your knees (I'm 5'7" if that helps). The water was amazing as were our morning walks to the pier and back (about 50-60 minutes return trip). If you walk south, it's about a 30 minute return trip to the end of the resorts and back. So to sum it up, the service was excellent, the beach wonderful and the drinks amazing. I do have one suggestion for the kitchen. Perhaps they need to have different deep fryers for different food products as the French fries at times tasted like fried chicken or fish. This can throw people off who have a sensitive stomach.

    “Wonderful couples trip”

We stayed at the Royal Hideaway for a week (Feb 5) with 3 other couples. This resort is really beautiful, the grounds, pools, and beach are fabulous. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed our stay, it was a great fit for us. The resort has a relaxing atmosphere but it was never boring. We met lots of lovely people and had a great time meeting people from all over the world- US, Canada, and England. CHECK IN: Smooth and easy with Camilla BEACH: the beach-- large, clean, lots of chairs beautiful water, John was always attentive and drinks were always available RESTAURANTS: don't really like making reservations but we made all of ours in advance with Sergio and then William followed up with us on arrival, we ended up making a few changes but we were happy with our dining times. We really enjoyed the dinner/theater on Tuesday night-- The Jersey Boys show was fun and entertaining. We had good meals at all of the restaurants--breakfast at both The Deck and Spices, lunches everyday at The deck--pizzas and fish tacos were a favorite. Eric and Christian did a great job here. We had a great meal at Azia-- we ate at one of the tappenyaki tables. Chrystal at Palazzo and Ventanas is an awesome hostess and made us feel very special. We did not get to try The Grill, but did have a great time at Allegra for the Super Bowl party. We ended up every night at Allegra and Bentura always took care of us. POOLS: service was awesome - our crowd drinks beer, so Javier brought us a stainless steel bucket of ice and beer and kept it filled at all times... Cesar and Santiago were also great servers. Entertainment: during the day at the pool, we loved the 4pm performances, Jersey Boys, and Saxaphone the Rock band that played the night of Super Bowl was really good, as was the SAX player every night. It was really just enough for us... and thought it all ended about 11pm-- ROOMS: Nice but small for a 4 diamond resort, well appointed, bed was comfortable. Fridge was useless, and as others have stated the shower temp changed continuously We had a wonderful vacation and would love to come back

“Just the Facts (Stayed Jan. 31 to Feb. 7, 2017)”

My wife and I are experienced travelers to the Caribbean. In addition to several cruises, we have stayed on Cozumel (Presidente Inter-Continental), in Playa Del Carmen (3 times at "The Royal") and in the Dominican Republic (Iberostar Grand Hotel Bravaro). We always include TripAdviser reviews in our vacation decision, so it is our turn to contribute. ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE: After a 75 minute trip from the airport (which included stops at other resorts), we checked-in at one of the two desks located in a large room on the right side of the lobby. There was no one else checking-in, so everything went smoothly and we were served a cool glass of champagne. Checkout also was fast and efficient. Note: 3:00 p.m. check-in and 12:00 noon check-out times are strictly enforced. Do not plan on getting into your room if you arrive early or want to stay a little late on your last day. (This was no big deal to us as we arrived after 3:00 p.m. and needed to catch our van back to the airport at 10:10 a.m.). INTERNET/CABLE T.V.: While cellphone service was excellent, neither of our phones would stay connected to the resort's WiFi. We heard this complaint from other guests. We did not bring a computer but heard that the WiFi connection was great for them. There were many cable television channels but only 2 in english (CNN and Fox News). The rest were in spanish. (Not an issue for us but my spouse does like to fall asleep with the T.V. on and a news program is not very relaxing). RESTAURANT DRESS CODE: Men must wear a shirt with a collar (dress shirt or golf shirt, long pants (no shorts) and closed toed shoes (no sandals or flip flops). Women can wear dresses, pants, open toed shoes, etc. (We were fine with this effort to add some class to evening dinners). THE ROOM: The size was fine.......main living area, a patio/balcony with padded chairs and a separate bathroom (that included a small walk-in closet with another door that separated the toilet). The shower looks small from the outside but is larger once you enter it (40 inches by 46 inches). The safe was inside the small walk-in closet and worked good. There is a refrigerator located inside a large dresser that the T.V. sits on. While it was clearly running, it did not keep anything cold or even cool. It was basically useless. The a/c was making a noise upon arrival in the room which was promptly fixed. The a/c was challenging. It did keep the air temperature between 66.2 degrees and 68.9 degrees but it felt like it was not removing much moisture from the air.......kinda of a cool, clammy feeling. As mentioned in other posts, the a/c exit vent blows the a/c air right at the bed, leading to cool air in your face all night. The shower was dangerous. The water temperature cycled from cool to scalding hot throughout the week. Every shower required moving quickly to the side when the water got hot. Room service was prompt and good except for one issue.......getting two new hand towels and two new wash clothes each day. On 4 days we had to ask for them. Last but not least there was the toilet........it would only flush 50% of the time. The volume and speed of the water coming from the tank to the bowl seemed to be the issue. The solution was to dump extra water into the bowl when flushing and it worked fine. ROOM/RESORT LIQUOR: There was no liquor in the room. No small bottles to be had, nor were there any large bottles with dispensers available. The resort also uses Pepsi.......not Coke. After asking, they were able to supply our room frig with a few cans of Coke. So "Captain & Coke" is really "Captain & Pepsi". Available throughout the resort is top shelf liquor........Captain Morgan, Johnny Walker (Red and Black), etc. If you don't see it, ask, they will have it. ANIMALS/BUGS: They have a large version of the guinea pig that come out in the late afternoon and evenings. Fun to watch and we would feed them an apple once in a while. THERE ARE MOSQUITOES!! The second night we were enjoying (in shorts) the entertainment on the outside patio of the Allegra Bar and ended up with five+ bites on each leg. We brought buy spray with us, used it and didn't have any further issues. The mosquitoes were small but each bite left an itchy, red welt. RECREATION: There is a sports center located on the beach on the southeast corner of the resort property. For free you can use their kayaks and a Hobie "Wave" sailboat. You must reserve them daily and you get to use them for an hour each day. The free bikes you can use were horrible. Very small 21 inch frames, non-padded hand grips with all hand brakes and gearing removed. You therefore had only one speed and had to back pedal to stop. They were very uncomfortable and somewhat dangerous (did not stop very fast plus you had to remember to back peddle). We used them for a short time, quickly returning to the resort and never to be used again. DINING: Our travel agent emailed Sergio Legorreta (he is this resort's onsite "Guest Experience" individual) on January 23rd and he confirmed our dinner reservations 4 days later. We were just plain lucky to keep these reservations during our stay........on six of our seven nights one of the restaurants would be randomly closed. (We talked to other guests that tried to make all of their dinner reservations the minute they arrived and could not get into certain restaurants or get the time slot they wanted). The dinners were very good to excellent. Our favorite was Las Ventanas, closely followed by Palazzas, Then came Azia and Spices. Expect to spend 1.5 hours enjoying each dinner. We ate breakfast each morning at the buffet (good but not great) and really liked the very good chips/guacamole and chicken fingers poolside for lunch. Last but not least, we noted no lobster available with any dinner. It was a separate $50.00 charge per person! Also, none of the various dinner menus changed while we were there. Therefore if you were staying more than a week, you might have to eat the same thing multiple times. GROUNDS: There are two pools just up from the beach with warm water and great ocean views. (There were four other smaller pools within the resort for villas closer to the resort entrance). The beach was expansive and one of the best ones we have ever experienced. The water was clear, warm and without rocks. The little bit of seaweed that did wash ashore was quickly cleaned-up. There were approximately 140 beach chairs that included folding cabanas. We never counted more that 20 used at any one time. Pool lounges were also numerous but tended to be used (or the "towel game" reserved) by 11:00 a.m. each day. The grounds were well kept and the 200+ rooms truly did give the feeling of a more intimate, adults-only resort. For the first 4 days we were there (Tues. to Friday) the resort was at 50% occupancy. For the remaining time we were there (Sat. thru Tues.), occupancy increased to 80%+. SERVICE/STAFF: They work 6 days a week (we asked) and it was great, good and bad. The room service couldn't seem to get us had towels and wash clothes each day. Sometime beach/pool waiters would manage to forget your orders but everyone tried very hard and was very friendly. I understand that this was an Occidental Resort that was recently purchased by Barcello. We made it a habit to ask every employee we encountered how long they had worked there. Only one said 2 years. All the others replied "26 days" to "9 months". Obviously many of the former employees either quit or were not re-hired by Barcello. There were times that it just seemed like they were short of employees (intentionally understaffed to save costs?). The ones there worked so hard but we had to wonder if an employee shortage was to blame for random restaurant closings each night and the dinner theater not being open. ENTERTAINMENT: There was pool side entertainment at 4:00 p.m. each day. Some would call it a little hokey ("Jersey Boys" "Diva Women", etc.) but we thought it was fairly good. At night the Allegra Bar had outside entertainment on their patio. It was also a little hokey ("Elvis", etc.) but we liked it. There were also daily activities such as pool aerobics, beach horseshoes and beach volleyball. No disco or loud music at night nor loud music at the pool all afternoon. There is a large dinner theater with a stage for entertainment. It was not open and locked throughout our stay. One night a door was not fully closed, so we went inside. It smelled very musty and had some random furniture scattered around. Prior to our arrival we noted reviews that said it had been open. It sure didn't look like it had been recently used. When we asked staff about when it would again open, we never got a straight answer. Just shrugs and comments of "no open". VILLA CHOICE: All villas are numbered. Those closest to the pool are #24, #27 and #31. Download a resort map to decide whether you want to stay closer to the pool or further back towards the main building. Always ask for an interior facing room. The neighboring resorts to both the north and south have loud music and entertainment all day and into the evening. We asked for villa #31 and got it (either by luck or true customer service ). While we faced the west, which didn't have a pool or interior view but instead looked at another villa, we did not face the south so we didn't have to see a wall nor hear the resort next door. TIPPING: We took $185.00 for 7 days and came home with $27.00. Right or wrong we tipped the room maid $2.00 in the morning and $2.00 each evening. The concierge got $5.00 upon arrival and another $5.00 just before we departed (he was helpful and seemed to be able to get things done). We tipped the waiter $5.00 per dinner and tipped the guy in charge of the sailboat $2.00 on every day that we used it. Lastly, we tipped each waiter $1.00 per drink order. If I had to guess, I would say 60% of the guests tipped. I never saw service decline if you didn't tip but these people work so hard and the smiles when they got a tip were very sincere. OVERALL: This is an adults only, small and more intimate resort. If available in the ratings we would have given it a strong 3+ stars (versus 4 stars). The entertainment is low key and decent. Guests range from the 30's to mostly 55+ years old. If you want to party, enjoy loud poolside or nightly music, you will need to go elsewhere. If you want to have a quiet, relaxing (someone younger would say "dull") time, this is your place. What is our "bottom line"?.........the wonderful beach, ocean, plus beach and pool chairs' availability pretty much made up for the staffing and room issues. If we had not gotten all of our dinner reservations or villa requests, we might be a little more inclined to not come back. Will we return next year? Maybe, however, before we go somewhere two years in a row we may want to try somewhere else........perhaps the higher TripAdvisor rated "Iberostar Grand Hotel Paraiso" located more north in Playa Del Carmen? There is nothing wrong with returning to the same resort year after year especially since vacation time is precious and the cost of a vacation favors returning to the familiar. However, after staying at "The Royal" three times, we decided to try somewhere else and were happy with the Royal Hideaway Playacar. Were it perfection (in our minds) there would be no question about going back. For now, we will probably consider Iberostar next winter just to see for ourselves why it was much higher (TripAdvisor) rated.

    “5 Amazing nights in Playacar”

My girlfriend and I just returned from an amazing 5-night stay at the R.H. Playacar. From the moment we got there with the champagne reception to the day we left, everything was 5 star treatment. Our villa's personal concierge (each villa has one) Johanna was fantastic and made our stay as pleasant and easy as possible, including arranging a special valentines day surprise for us. She arranged all of our restaurant reservations within the resort, coordinated our return travel to the airport, and provided excellent advice and tips for things to do outside the hotel. The room lacked for nothing with all the luxury amenities you would expect from a 5-star resort. The grounds, pool, and beach were kept impeccably clean with plenty of chairs and cabanas for everyone. The restaurants are a food lovers dream and the required dress code for the dinner only restaurants kept the atmosphere feeling very upscale. If you are there long enough make every opportunity to visit each of them, you won't be disappointed. The vibe of the resort in general is easy, quiet, and relaxed, so if you're looking for a party/club scene you may want to keep searching. That being said, there are young couples (30 somethings) there so it provides a good mix. We would 100% return again!

    “We will be back”

What an amazing adults only resort. Absolutely beautiful, clean, friendly, amazing beach, service and food! If you're looking for a truly relaxing vacation, this is it. We've been to several over the years in this area and this ranks in the top two. The simple fact that they have so many return guests tells you everything you need to know. I love that their beach lounger chairs have canopy's on them. They even come around to clean your glasses/sun glasses. No one hounding you about the spa, pictures or time shares.
