    “Return Trip Disappointing ”

My husband and I visited this resort a few years ago and it was outstanding. It has deteriorated since then. The staff aim to please but there is a definite language barrier. They also can never answer a question about anything except how to get to the beach. The beach is small and was crowded. I liked the breezy area on the point in front of the seafood restaurant. The loud unpleasant music on the beach plus workers hammering away on one of the outside showers is not 5 star behavior. Then there is the lack of beach towels (daily.."laundry problem") and the unenforced "rule" about people saving beach or pool chairs at crack of dawn, sometimes never showing up to use! If you showed up after 10, there was no where to sit. The drinks were weak and because waitresses get 15 at a time, by the time your frozen drink shows up, it's warm mush. Getting our own drinks and requesting higher end brands worked better. My biggest problem was the unsanitary beach/pool bar conditions. Plastic glasses were quickly rinsed in dirty water and reused. Ugh. The lobby bar was better. The restaurants were ok at best. The beef was uniformly horrible. I think Mexican cattle must graze on cactus. The fish was usually very good but no waiter knew or could find out where it came from. Breakfast and salad bars were great. The Oriental restaurant was terrible. Entertainment, especially, in the lobby was very good. The show at the park was incredible. We spent a day at the park next door. Though a Tuesday, it was very crowded and that interfered with its enjoyment, especially, the river swim. When we were there the first time, the park was complimentary but not any more. The other day trip we chose, the sail to Isla Muljeres, was really disappointing. Snorkeling was not easy or fun because of the spot chosen. Lunch was awful. Most people couldn't eat it. Finally, we could not get clean towels in our room regularly. It was hit/miss. And no facecloths! And the shower IS difficult to use. It flies off its holder and attacks you. I agree with the vacation club sales push being annoying, but we were warned when we checked in. The Spa was also not like before. Massage was ok but pedicure terrible. All she had to work with was an emory board, a clipper and a can of spray drier. The girl worked hard but had no equipment. This cost $55. In short, this place is just not 5 star material. I've been to 5 star hotels all over the world. This one is maybe 3. With better management, it could be better. I wouldn't recommend. And it's over an hour from the airport! A long hot drive..as is every day trip. I think people who are impressed with this place are not experienced travelers. We were there for a week, from 14th-22nd.

“WONDERFUL combo of beach and jungle ”

The resort was had a nice small cove for a beach and also lots of trees and plants and animals. I loved this combination! I'm so happy we decided to stay here for our first time in the riviera maya. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating! The food was excellent! Lots of choices and fresh foods. Our room was clean and accommodating. We also loved waking up in the morning to seeing the monkeys play in the trees on our balcony. The open water salt water pool is so cool! Jazz and Ivone were great and entertaining in the water aerobics at the beach! The only cons were you had to pay for wifi and some of the shops were closed at times we wanted to go to them. We will be back! Thank you for the great experience!

    “Beautiful Resort”

So I am going to start off by saying that, I read a decent portion of the reviews on here for the hotel and resort before travel on Feb. 18th. I will try to break it down by all the questions I was trying to find while I was researching. Transportation: We scheduled the transportation for a shuttle roundtrip through the hotel. We waited maybe 5 mins from the time we got through customs and were outside. Basically enough time to buy a drink. I did not initially get a confirmation on what time we were getting picked up in the morning to bring us to the airport for our flight. I had to go to guest services and they called the shuttle people and I spoke with them and they confirmed over the phone without a problem. The drive from the airport is about 45 mins, which removes you enough from Cancun and allows you a break from the fast paced world. Rooms: My wife and I went with another couple and we had conjoining rooms. Downside to that is the conjoining rooms only 1 one room gets a King bed, the other room was two doubles (not the end of the world) as they were oversized doubles. Were told that most conjoining rooms are for family where the parents get the King and kids get the other room, which makes sense. You do only get 1 room key for each room. Since we were together the whole time, it wasnt an issue and we never asked for a 2nd key either. Air conditioning was super cold when I wanted to turn the room to cold. Mini fridge was restocked daily with water, soda and beer. Food: They had a very decent selection of food at resort. The downside I would have to say would be the desert. Cheesecake at the Steak Restaurant, was not good, but the Carrot Cake was. Chocolate cake, at the buffet over the swim up bar pool was not good either. The Seafood Restaurant had a nice selection as well. The Fish Tacos as an appetizer could of been a dinner. They were very good. We were told the wait would be 1hr, no problem, we are on vacation with no kids so we can wait. Maybe waited 20 mins tops. The Steak Restaurant had some of the most tender steak I have tried. I did not get the filet, I went with the Strip, super tender, the Ribeye was super tender and the Filet my wife said was cooked perfectly. The breakfast at the Water was really good. They had a very large selection to choose from. Service was excellent. Pacos Tacos was very good and decent sized portions. The Pizza Place was good as well. We did not get to all of the specialty restaurants as we had gone offsite sometimes and preferred to go to the buffets as well. Service was great at all the places we ate at and we had no issues with getting seated at the two specialty restaurant we did go to. The dress code needs to be enforced more on the women. For Men: Long pants and closed toe shoes. They dont care if its jeans or slacks. I am in a nice polo and khakis and a woman looked like she just finished going for a run. Baseball hat, tank top and shorts, not sure how that is acceptable and a person in a polo and shorts is not. Smell from Ocean: Never smelled anything. I did see the grounds being cleaned daily and in the morning they were cleaning the pools and Cove. Timeshare People: We did see people on a timeshare tour and they are wearing brown on brown and are sitting as you walk into your building. They are very helpful and will provide you with directions and whatever else you need. When we were walking up to our room they said to make sure to stop down and get our welcome gift. As we were walking to dinner we were asked if we got our welcome gift yet and we said yes, someone just brought a bottle of tequila and plate of fruit to our room. They said that was not the welcome gift and then said to sit down and he would get it for us. At that point we figured out it was the timeshare presentation, and straight out ask. I said just be honest, is this the timeshare presentation/tour and he said Yes. I told him to be 100% honest, we are not going to be buying a timeshare, I understand you have a job to do, but we wont be buying and he understood. They said if anyone that looks dressed like me, just tell them you spoke with me and they wont bother you. Pools: They had a lot of pools. We stayed by the swim up pool bar as it was relatively close to our room (Building 20). We never ordered a drink from the wait staff as it was just as easy to get one yourself than wait for it. The Adult Only pool, is strictly enforced and have people by the entrance turning people away if they had kids. The temperature in the pools was not bad, it was more refreshing than anything. Disco: Actually really good. I was surprised on how great of a selection of music was played. Dance floor was packed nightly. The DJ could read the crowed and may have started a song and if he noticed everyone leaving, he would change it to something else. Sports Bar: They have alot of TVs and 1 pool table. If they had Darts and maybe a Foosball Table, that would give alot more people something to do while the pool table is occupied. Drinks: They have top shelf, no extra charge. Just ask for by name or they will give you well liquor, which will be done at any bar anywhere throughout the world. Construction: There is no construction that is going on. The only construction, which I would not even call it construction, would be just the normal maintenance to buildings and the grounds. Bugs: We did not have an issue with bugs. We saw some fruit flies but that was about it. Xcaret Park: I know this is technically not part of the hotel, but it was another thing that I was curious about. It was really nice. We only went for one day and wouldnt really need another day. The lazy river was really nice, it was long though, took about 30mins and brings you to the other side of the park from where your belongings are, so you have to walk back to the entrance to get to your locker. They have shows going constantly and the night show was great. The beginning was by far the best part of the show, I am not sure what it is called, but its like combination of lacrosse and field hockey in the dark while the ball is on fire. It was crazy, and the game they play where they hit the ball with their hip was impressive. That has to be so much fun and so hard at the same time. You can go back and forth to the hotel without an issue. They do offer a boat ride from the hotel to the park, but you can walk just as fast. They have an exit from the park that goes underground to the back of the hotel which brings you out by the cove and the access to the water. The food at the buffet was so good. They offer drinks for free but when you want a fancy mixed drink or something that is either blended or has liquor in it, they tell you it cost extra. But the food was really good. Overall I would come back and I would recommend this to a friend or family. Barcelo has done a great job with the remodeling and everyone was helpful and friendly. If you have any questions I may have not covered, message me and I will be happy to answer.

    “Good and Getting Better”

Stayed here a little over a year ago and again in February, 2017. Everything was just a little bit better, from the check-in to the food, to the entertainment. A solid 4-4.5 star place. The beach is small and not the best, but the beautiful jungle compensates for it. XCaret part next door is a must see, especially for families (though you walk a LOT). It is huge and really amazing. The dolphin show and swim with the dolphins looked like a blast. The evening show at XCaret is really great and spectacular. A few tips here and there and you are treated like a king. The waiters and most everyone are super nice and just plain happy folks that make coming here special. You are asked a lot to attend their vacation club thing - not super high pressure sales tactics (we went to one), but I would not do it again. Just say no....The Barceló management is good and the sit down restaurants are improving. They are really keen on getting good reviews, so the push is on for feedback. Best restaurants are the Oriental and Seafood. Next are the Mexican and Italian. The least attractive is the Steakhouse (for me) as Mexican beef is generally poor, but there are other things to eat. Even the worst one was pretty good. The buffets are good, and the seafood is excellent. Drinking coffee over looking the ocean for a sunrise breakfast was the best....No crowds anywhere and always chairs to be had. I could have stayed for a month!

    “Royal Club”

We stayed in the Royal Club and the staff, food & rooms were excellent. We gave a 4 start rating as we were not to keen on the beach at this resort, however being in the Royal Club made up for that! the staff in the Royal Club were fun , friendly and very accommodating to any request we had. The view from the restaurant is perfect and it is not crowded. The Royal Club pool area is fantastic and the service at pool side also fantastic. Our only negative of this resort is the made-made beach, it is small & quite cloudy water. However on a calm ocean day there are fish to be seen out towards the entrance. Their is wildlife everywhere which we enjoyed. There is a school of fish that hang out in the bay that love to be fed bananas and bread. The resort is very clean, and lots to see. Very convenient to be beside the Xcaret park as well and only a quick cab ride to Playa-del-Carmen for shopping. Note my ratings are for the Royal Club area. We didn't eat at other locations at the resort.
