    “Good location, nice and modern”

    We really liked staying at this hotel during our trip to Panama. The only little downside was the rooftop party that was playing music until ~3am and we could hear it in our room on the 10th floor. These parties only happen on the weekend though.

    “Clean comfortable boutique hotel...that feels like a nightclub throughout”

    I had a quick single night stay at Occidental en route back to the US - worked out great for my purposes, though not quite my style. Pros: + Great location. Short car rides to the airport ($26), Casco Viejo ($7), Albrook ($10). + Comfortable and clean. The bed and the (enormous!) shower were exactly what I needed to break up two days of travel. + Friendly, largely bilingual staff. + Food availability. I arrived MUCH later than anticipated, and after missing my originally planned dinner was relieved that the sushi restaurant was open til midnight. + The bar/club upstairs. High energy crowd of both locals and tourists, with pretty amazing views of the city. Cons: + Value. Compared to a previous hotel booked in the same neighborhood, it cost almost triple for a room of the same size here, & with less amenities (ie no swimming pool here), and "city view" was a view of a skyscraper wall. + More value. At checkout I asked reception to hold my 1 bag for 1 hour (a gym bag), I was told it would be $30 for them to hold it. I honestly don't think I've ever been told that anywhere in the world?! I declined and opted to schlep it around with me. + Food. Dinner at the sushi restaurant - while awesome that it was even available & I received great service - wasn't very good. I was so hungry after 10 hours on the road though that I forced it down. Breakfast was surprisingly lacking in fresh produce - it was a lot of soggy, fried foods. And that was at 7am. Decent coffee however! + Ambiance. I'm sure it was exacerbated by the fact I'd just come from a blissful few days in a peaceful oceanfront bungalow, but the trance music being pumped into all the common areas (and blasted in the elevators along with visuals) was a little traumatic. I'll enjoy dance music as much as the next club rat emeritus...but I prefer my hotel to feel more like a sanctuary. Overall, my stay here was just fine. The most important things - cleanliness, safety, ease of access - were more than adequately covered and for that I recommend it. Just being engulfed in rave-esque animations and music above 130bpm in the place I go to escape and chill out...not exactly my type of vibe.

    “Decent hotel but could use better service”

    Overall, the hotel is clean, in a good area of town, and the rooms have great views. The only complaint I have is that I booked a room for one more night after my first night's stay and they refused to give me coffee for my room, claiming that you "only get coffee for one day no matter how many days you are booked." I thought this was absolutely ridiculous and unheard of, especially since I am paying for another night. Also, they're in cahoots with certain cab drivers and if you're a gringa like myself, they'll try to hook you up with someone who charges $20 for a $5 cab ride, thinking you wouldn't know any better. I've traveled long enough to know how to play the foreigner game, so just be aware of that.

    “Avoid this hotel”

    After attempting to check-in three times they finally had a room available. After check-in we discovered that my daughters flight was cancelled and she would have to stay one more night in Panama City. When I booked this hotel online the price was $54 for two guests and increased to $58 for three guests. A difference of $4. When I asked the desk to add another person the price the hotel quoted $38.50. They refused to honor the $4 difference shown online and insisted on payment of $38.50 to add one more person. I refused to let them overcharge me like this and instead made a reservation for my daughter for an entire room at a hotel 2 blocks away for the same price that the Occidental wanted to add one person to our room. You should be ashamed Occidental Hotel for overcharging like this. Oh! The staff was very rude and indifferent also. I travel to Panama City regularly. This was my first and last stay at this hotel. There are many, many hotels adjacent to this one at equal or better prices. Do yourself a favor and stay at one of the other hotels in the area.

    “No pool”

    I knew this place had no pool, but for the price I would have stayed somewhere that did have one in Panama City. We arrived and our room was too small, kids had to sleep on a extremely uncomfortable sofa bed the first night. The breakfast is good, a lot of fresh fruit, and staples that will satisfy you for the day. It's not really close to anything, so you have to take the metro or cab. One item that really was disappointing, the front desk clerk offered to get us a cab to the Panama Canal, and they overcharged us. The clerk said it was a good price, but he was lying. I didn't appreciate that from the hotel staff.
