    “Still my favourite hotel.....”

    I have spent yet another perfect week here... I cannot find anything negative to say! I have been blown away with the kindliness and professionalism of all the staff, their attention to detail and the perfect escape they create in this wonderful hotel. I love coming back here....

    “O Tempora O Formentores”

    My love affair with Formentor started on my honeymoon 21 years ago with my wife and 18 month old son. It carried on a few years later with a visit with both children. The beautiful location, the wonderful staff and the exceptional Spanish food. How sad that not all three survive! The staff are still great and several that we remembered apparently remembered us too, how professional and charming even if they didn't really remeber us. The rooms are spacious and comfortable (we had a junior suite) with wonderful linen and a great balcony. Ours did have the odd feature of a TV one could not see from the bed but as we did not want to watch it this was irrelevant. The beauty of the hotel and its grounds and the wonderful pools and beach survive so there are many reasons to come here. Sadly the dead hand of corporate profit requirements have reached out and smothered what was for me the most appealing quality of all on my previous visits; the exceptional quality of the food on all the restaurants. For some unknown reason it appears that an Italian is now in charge of the kitchens, from Napoli our waiter told us. Could this be the reason on the evening we went a la carte in the Colomer (main restaurant) that the starter was a fried pizza? Perhaps forgivable if it had been sublime, in the event it was a dry greasy disc with a teaspoon of cold tomato concassee on top. There were signs that there are still chefs here who can cook with a delicious light creamy Tuber Soup and a decent steak. Generally however we stuck to the buffet which has replaced the table d'hote menu that we remembered. Not because it was much good but because the a la carte prices were pretty eye watering. The buffet was simply not 5 star standard with many of the chafing dishes hilding rather dried up pieces of meat or fish. One night the Italians struck again with a chafing dish of what was called Farfalle Carbonara. Where to start? Firstly Farfalle is completely the wrong pasta for carbonara, secondly it was dry beyond belief and worst of all it was a tomato sauce. Carbonara is Eggs, Cream, Bacon and Parmesan. One element that did stand out was the Sushi table on Thursday evenings. In the El Pi reataurant which in June is open lunch only we had a good steak but again a calamitous Rigatoni with tomato sauce where the sauce appeared to be cream of tomato soup. The menu is much too short with a very poor choice for a poolside restaurant. Finally we ate most days at the Platja Mar beachside restaurant and bar where the staff as in all the restaurants were outstanding and there also appeared still to be someone who could really cook. The Tuna Burger was excellent, pink in the middle on a delicious black bun, (avoid the hamburger which appeared to be a mass produced bought in product). The Corvina (local white fish) on a bed of mash with majorcan vinaigrette was excellent. Sadly as it was not high season the 1st floor Playja Mar was not open which along with El Pi in the evenings held some of our best memories. The breakfast however is still very good. So how to rate our stay. We still love the Formentor and I would not put anyone off going. It is a magical place with wonderful staff. The reservations I have is whether Barcelor Hotels can get the food formula right. At the moment the food is only around 3 Star quality failing to match the 5 star service and surroundings. It is a Spanish hotel and the food of Spain should be celebrated as it used to be. It is fine to have a feature from other countries such as the Sushi table and I love pasta but if Formentor is going to offer dishes like these they should be excellent, not the cheap travesties offered here.

    “Disappointment”

    What can I say... it was our third time in this hotel and we will never come back . Food is simply terrible . Level of service very poor! . Staff hardly speaks English. To make shower everyday took ten minutes to set up water temperature. Drama, disaster. Never again

    “A wonderful hotel”

    A fabulous hotel. Stylish, classy, historical, beautiful. Set in attractive well maintained gardens facing south onto Formentor Bay. Easy access to a wonderful beach, excellent for swimming. An immaculately well maintained big swimming pool. Superb views from the dining terrace. Very good food, and very friendly, efficient staff. To sum up - a very special place.

    “A beautiful spot”

    We spent 3 nights at the Royal Hideaway, with our 2.5 year old son. Overall it was fantastic. Such a beautiful spot, amazing beach, the pools, gardens and our room (standard mountain view room but apparently one of the refurbished ones and it had an fantastic terrace) were all really great. It never felt busy or noisy anywhere - but noisy and spacious enough we didn’t have to worry about our toddler being loud! As a relaxing hotel it really is worth paying for. However it is very expensive and there are certain big misses that make the high price a bit hard to swallow... it’s nearly impossible to get a drink at the main hotel bar. Such a beautiful terrace over looking the sea and surrounded by gardens but we waited 15-20 mins before going to queue at the bar. We then waited 40 minutes for food to come. Just one waiter on his own doing the bar (and maybe cooking the food?!!) isn’t what we were paying for. I also wouldn’t go half board here again - the quality and variety of the buffet dinner wasn’t what I’d expect for a 5* hotel - and wasn’t up to the standard of the wonderful breakfast. The beach was a highlight for us, the beach bar right behind the loungers was great, fantastic food, drinks and service. Plus pedallos and kids toys all available. The Balinese beds are exactly as they look in the pictures - super comfortable. Again, paying additional € for these on top of such a high room rate is a little sore but the hotel are at least very clear about all the extras you will be paying for. I’m undecided if I would stay here again. It feels like we could find better based on the missed above - although as said the hotel itself, grounds, pools and beach are really something quite special.
