    “Run away from it!”

Certainly, one of the worst hotels in Varadero. The food is garbage, I found worms in the rice and got sick because of rotten fish that was reheated from the previous day. Breakfasts were the only decent meal they had. Incredibly, the restaurant had no tea spoons at all and nothing to replace them. Not even a plastic stick to stir the coffee. The elevators were out of order for the whole week. Elders and families with babies, with rooms in the third or four floors had to use the stairs. We had 2 power outages. The first one lasted several hours. During those outages, there’s no hot water. The main swimming pool was closed for repairs. Now, they told us that only 3 days before the trip. They refused to give us a discount and there was no possibility to change hotels with only 72 hours before the flight. I learned later that the pool repair was planned months ago but they decided not to talk about it so to avoid losing clientele. The only good thing about Palma Real is the staff. But make sure that if you decide to go there despite my review, to have enough change to give tips. They need that money to make a living and believe me: they deserve it! Most of them are very nice and they work hard. The bars were fine but, in many occasions, there was no ice because the icemaking machine would break. The best place to drink and have fun is the Discoteca. The animation was okay. The one at night was actually a show with dancers and little or no participation at all from the public. In conclusion, do everything you can to avoid Allegro Palma Real and make sure to read the reviews for the others.

    “WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!”

im cuban but i live in the usa for some years now and my boyfriend booked this hotel at a cubatur agency in matanzas to spend a couple of days since it was my birthday. i couldn't be more disappointed! and this has anything to do with hotel in question but with the staff. im talking that i could easily sue them because of ethic discrimination. when we arrived the person at the front desk just wont let us in just because im a cuban that lives in the usa- she told me that i needed a cuban identification and i had my cuban passport, my american id and my residency with me but she didn't want us there. i was so mad that we went to cubatur and explained all this and the person there an d she was so shocked that could not believe what we were saying, she apologized and she called the headquarters and they could not believe it either and they refunded us the money and they wanted us to talk to the tourism department in cuba but i refused and told her that no one will lose their job because of that, that i just wanted our money back and we will never put a foot in that hotel ever again. i really appreciated what that girl at cubatur did for us and she was a fallen angel and again this has nothing to do with cubatur or the hotel in question but with that service we just received. i just hope cuba will change the way they address and treat cuban citizens because they give priority to foreign people when it should be the opposite.

Hello What you are saying is not an exclusive hotel policy. It is a national standard that we have to follow. If you make a reservation with an identification document, you must show that document, not another with a different identification and nationality. it's the same in airlines, hotels, banks ... and would like to take the opportunity to clarify that Barceló welcomes all guests who book to stay with us regardless of their origin, skin tone, religion and age, and strongly believes that everybody has a right to a well-earned holiday.  Thanks Alejandro M Resident Manager

“The New Allegro Palma Real Revisited: Thumbs Down to Changes”

The New Allegro Palma Real Revisited: Thumbs Down to Changes Disappointment reigns supreme after my most recent visit to Palma Real resort just months after my last visit when I was encouraged by what I had seen. Since much of what I said in February has changed and I can't recommend the hotel anymore, I feel obliged to update everyone. Who knows, some may like the changes? Okay, aside from painting garbage cans and redoing the pinstripes on the floors, the new Allegro management group has failed miserably at improving things, let alone maintaining the status quo which was far better. With one week vacationers losing two days to travel (at the front and back end of their holidays), every one in our group of six, felt cheated by the closure of the 24 hour lobby bar and now new 11 P.M. closing time. To make matters worse, the small cocktail bars in buildings one and three also had their hours cut, with 6 P.M. closures or earlier now in place. Beer too, is still not an option there. Now while most don't need 24 hour service, if the main lobby bar was open until at least 2 A.M., it wouldn't be as bad. Anyhow, ditto for my suggestions for improvement in my last review. Also new. No tuna sandwiches anymore, the ones I boasted about at the Beachfront Grill as a thoughtful option for non-meat eaters. Disappointing. Also new. Those comfortable couches in the lobby bar lounge are gone, replaced by dining room type chairs and tables. More capacity likely but not nearly as comfortable and homey. And there, as in much of the hotel, most sitting areas are now off limits to smoking, leaving most guests feeling like "displaced persons" who paid their bill only to have no place to sit while non-smokers (and kids alike) fill the smoking sections without hesitation. No good, not fair. By the way, they did this at the "new" Starfish Quatro Palmas, and look what happened -- the place was empty when I visited in February and again, two weeks ago in June. Nothing worse for business than culling your smoking guests and having staff try to ram it down your throat (at building one cocktail bar). Also new. Two for one type discount hotel rates for Cuban guests, leaving tourists with little place to lounge or sit and often with little or no food to eat. SORRY to have to say it, but the truth is they eat as if it's their last meal -- grabbing 12 slices of ham and cheese at one time or 6-8 pieces of stewed chicken even if you're in line and make it known you would like some of it yourself. Guess it's up to the hotel to decide if they want to open their doors to a stampede of locals BUT if they do, they ought to at least publicize this new reality with tour operators so we can venture there eyes wide open! Meanwhile at the hotel, still few substantive improvements have been made to the rooms. In our case, our fridge barely worked, the towel rack in the bathroom was broken, one of the two small dim light fixtures in the room was burnt out, and moldy ceiling tiles still abound everywhere despite obvious health concerns (enough to make you sick). In another friend's room, a partial ceiling collapse occurred and yet somehow it went mysteriously unnoticed. And, the elevators still don't work amid signs they have little or no intention to ever get them working again. To rub salt in the wounds, some Allegro marketing ace convinced everyone to open the "Havana Club disco" at the hotel to guests from their two other local hotels, meaning flocks of outsiders come parading through the hotel each night, young kids for the most part, so if you do want to visit the place yourself, it was usually too crowded. Hate to say it but us more "mature folks," good guests at that still love to dance but prefer the lobby bar hands done over a small, hot disco and puking young kids! That said, hotels ought to disallow anyone under 21 years of age into the hotel bar or even hotel itself unless accompanied by an adult relative. We do it in bars and hotels in Canada, why not Cuba?? Another new idea I cannot figure out is why all the juice glasses were removed from the buffet restaurant? How can you drink from the pitchers of juice on display if you don't have a glass to drink from? Nobody I talked to knew the answer, staff included when they weren't busy either scrambling to clean dishes or avoiding all contact. Oh boy, amazing how new management could screw up so badly, so fast. Now, the good things I can say is that as "repeat guests," we got a room where we asked for one and free late check out (til 4 P.M.) after asking for it, and there were new more comfortable chairs at the Beach Club ... and, least I forget, "traditional Cuban" musical entertainment was still being had, so that's good; one all male 5 Pc. band was as good as you'II get anywhere. Bravo! Btw, the Cuban from Cardenas who jumped up from the audience and sung his voice off was amazing, great stuff! That said though, of the six of us who went down, no one plans on returning, and one third of us got "Delhi Belly" resulting in 2-3 days lost time because we were sick or too afraid to leave our rooms .... Last but not least, as for staff, most are nice and service oriented but it wouldn't hurt if more learned to say, "you're welcome," especially after hearing their guests say "please" and "thank you" over and over. If Sunwing's stewardesses can do it, they can too. Oh, as a sidebar, our June 2 Cubana Airlines two week flight was cancelled at the last minute on orders from the Cuban authorities (who were conducting an across the board safety audit) but Hola Sun granted us a full refund without hesitation or fuss. Good thing especially in these ever declining days of airline travel, etc. where you automatically fear the worst. Thanks. So, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the hotel needs to know this if they hope to turn things around and improve. In conclusion, many things have changed at the Allegro Palma Real resort most recently leaving most long time guests I know and myself very unhappy. When deciding on whether to go yourself, you should at least be able to do it with your eyes wide open. After visiting for years, I regret to say it's no longer a good option, at least not for me and those I have met here. On the other hand, maybe they can right the ship and new reviews will ultimately persuade me to return? To staff and management there, thank you, best wishes and good luck!

    “Don't go!!!”

This was our second time to this resort so we knew what to expect. We chose this resort due to its great location to downtown Varadero. This resort is currently being taken over by Barcello and all the top dogs were there. That being said you would think things would be top notch during their visit. The food was the absolute worst I have ever encountered, I'm not fussy and have travelled to Cuba many times. I literally ate ham and cheese sandwiches for the week. The food was cold (always) and the buffet served regurgitated food each and every day. As a person who has food safety certification as far as I can tell little or no precautions were in use during my stay. A cesspool of bacteria brewing each and every meal including the snack and beach bar. The service in the lobby bar is non existent. The bartenders spend most of their time appearing to be busy doing menial tasks. They ignore you and if your waiting for them to come to your table, forget it. Had a day of rain and the water began pouring through the roof in the main lobby quickly covering everybody ankle deep. Vending machines, speakers, And anything else electrical remained plugged in and people and children walked amlously through the water for at least an hour before any employees attempted to clear the area. Rooms old and in desperate need of a overhaul. Fridge in room did not work. Safe stopped working after the 3rd day and keys needed to be reactivated sometimes twice a day. Went for an incredibly good price (thank god) and this is only my second bad review I have written. Had a great time in spite of this. A week at the beach in Varadero is always amazing. Just choose another resort

Phone was not connected, advised management but they told us that technician were working in problem, 7 days went by and no resolution to this services. Buffet in main restaurant full of flies, air condition not strong enough for restaurant. Heat do a line to book meal in restaurant, the Piazza and Cuban restaurant. Got to wait for 1 hour and half and manager very route and impatience.
