    “Amazing trip.”

We were my girlfriend and I, we have nothing to say that the experience was lovely, the treatment of the staff, the hotel amenities and the beautiful beach, since we plan to return next year. We want to thank everyone for giving us an unforgettable vacation.

    “Disaster”

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! I have stayed in hundreds of hotels worldwide but this was by far the worst, by a long, long way. The demographic of clients this hotel attracts does not say a lot for the evolution of mankind. It is a meeting point for every redneck and morbidly obese bottom feeder in Latin America, along with their misbehaving tribe of offspring. While waiting in the mosquito infested lobby to check in, fellow guests continually paraded through in various states of undress, a lot dripping wet, rudely shouting at the top of their voices and smoking indoors, only to discard their cigarettes into the poorly maintained gardens. It seemed most guests had eyes only for the adjacent bar and the never ending flow of “all inclusive,” low quality drinks they were determined to make the most of. This brings me to the jewel in the hotels crown, the “all you can eat buffet!” The three daily meals resembled feeding time at the zoo and if it weren’t for the sheer size of the drooling guests, you’d swear they hadn’t eaten in weeks. Table manners and common courtesy are obviously not a high priority on Cuban holidays and the ravenous guests had no shame when it came to loading their plates with enough barely edible Cuban slop to kill a small horse. Hygiene took a back seat as tongs were overlooked in favour of sweaty, unwashed hands, and never in my life have I seen salivating grown adults line up fifteen deep while waiting for the supply of chocolate ice cream to be replenished. Just outside the dining room were the pools and things didn’t get any better there. The water was an unhealthy dark shade of green that prevented the bottom of the pool being visible, but this didn’t stop the overly enthusiastic, entitled guests from splashing up a storm to mid-90’s pop anthems, blaring distortedly over the cheap PA system that would surely cause permanent hearing damage if you ventured too close. We instinctively decided to avoid cholera and passed up the option of having a swim, unlike many of the excited patrons, cigarette in one hand, overflowing plastic cup in the other, and bathers two sizes too small. At one point a stray dog even joined in the festivities and was thrown head first into the murky water. Moving on from the pool, our next stop was the beach. With its crystal clear aqua water and white sand for as far as the eye can see, the beach was amazing. Unfortunately, instead of looking after this natural wonder, the guests use it as a giant ash tray. The sand is sadly littered with millions of cigarette butts and I even almost tripped over a used condom when searching for a cleaner area of sand to spend the afternoon. On first inspection our room didn’t seem too bad, then we realised half the lights didn’t work, there was what smelt like sewage leaking through the tiled bathroom walls, the smoke detector was smashed off the ceiling, the safe was inoperable and to top it off there were no towels. We conceded defeat when, after my third trip back to reception, were informed the hotel had run out of towels. All said and done, this was the worst three days of my life, and I wouldn’t wish a stay in this hotel upon my worst enemy. If the government is struggling with overflowing prisons they could always threaten wrong doers with staying at Allegro Palma Real and the national crime rate would surely drop. The only thing that could save this hotel is a bulldozer. Happy holidays.

    “Very dirty hotel”

I'm very well aware that the standard of hotels in Cuba is below any western standard which I fully accept. However, there is a difference between comfort and cleanness. When we checked in, we received the keys of a room on the ground floor. Already on the way to the room, we noticed mold all over the place and the doorframe was broken. After arriving in the room, we noticed a very dirty bathroom with more mold, dirty towels and broken sharp tiles. Next to that there where holes in the sheet of the bed and hairs of former guests or employees on the sheets. After complaining at the reception, we could only receive a different room the next day. We head off to the buffet which was a complete chaos. Employees couldn't cope with cleaning up the tables with leftovers of food of the guests. Therefore, we decided to eat outside of the hotel. The breakfast is okay but make sure you are early as from 08.30, there will not be a clean table anymore. Close to the beach is a small bar / restaurant from the hotel where you can get snacks and beverages which is good. Here you can at least have a basic lunch with service (no buffet). In the afternoon it was time to check in our the improved room. Unfortunately the same issues here, mold, mold and mold. We travelled around Cuba for two weeks and stayed in casa particulares (B&B) for $ 25 per room per night. Here we received a warm welcome and a clean room with a proper working airconditioning. Therefore, I would expect at least the same from a hotel where we pay more than $ 100 per room per night but unfortunately this was not the case of Allegro Palma Real. I don't understand this hotel is partially runned by Barcelo hotel group which has at least in Europe a proper reputation. If you want to go to Cuba, enjoy Cuba by travelling around in this beautiful country and stay at the Cuban people at home. If you just want to lay on the beach, there are way better places in the Caribbean than Varadero and especially this hotel.

    “Worst vacation ever!”

I will start off by saying some of the front line staff at the Palma Real truly try. From what we saw they are understaffed.   This vacation was hell and I truly wish that we did not even get on the plane to go   I recognized that we booked a discounted resort and that we should not expect the Hilton on a motel budget but....   1.  No laundry facilities for 5 days. This meant no clean sheets or towels for the duration of our stay however what the staff did instead is recycle dirty towels. We received a clean towel that had blood stains on it.  We finally found a maid that we had to pay to take our towels home to wash.   2. There was no water for 3 days of our stay. To use the washroom we had to take a bucket of water to put into the toilet for it to flush. This issue with the toilet was all week and not just those 3 days without water. The maintenance person that came to our room to tend to the toilet advised us that we should not be throwing toilet paper in the toilet not even a small quantity!  When the water went down the only toilet facilities in the main lobby flooded which caused feces to overflow and was all over the floor it could be smelt throughout the whole lobby. So they decided to close the facility and finally cleaned about 2 days later. This meant if you had to use the bathroom you had to go to your room as that one the only common facilities was out service. As a result of it being closed Guests were throwing up and urinating in public areas frequently throughout our stay! On a separate note there was no hot water for the entire week.   3. One guest did not have water for a few days and decided to brush her teeth in the swim up pool   4. On 3 separate nights the police came to the resort and arrested people. I have NEVER gone to a resort where local police frequent so often and so many people have been arrested   5.  The food was completely inedible. I will start with the buffet. It smelt like a wet dog died in there.  Not only that but the a la carte were horrible. The food was recycle from buffet, to beach bar to a la cartes. It was stale and the best way to describe the food is as gulosh and not the good kind. For the life of me I could not understand why the food was so horrible as we left the resort to eat at any Cuban restaurant the food was amazing! The only thing that was good food wise was the coffee, cheese and sometimes the bread when it wasn’t stale. Until I discovered the restaurants outside the resort…we did not eat a proper meal for first 2 days. There was never a day that the main lobby or beach bar did not run out of something. There was always an excuse.  Our mini fridges were never stocked as advertised   6.I witnessed staff taking the plastic drinking cups out of the garbage and reusing them. I cannot even begin to understand how this is acceptable. To think of the hygiene issues!   7.  There were both male and female escorts on this resort and while I am not completely naïve to know that this does not exist; It was so blatant and acceptable. I had to listen to a foreigner and a male escort in the room next to me what sounded like construction happening. This resort is advertised as a family resort, if I brought my child here I would have been livid to know that she would have had to deal with this.   8.  As this is a cheap resort there are a lot of young people every night they took over the lobby to play beer bong! They were a drunk stupid mess and as a foreigner I was embarrassed for them. I had to witness someone having sex while I was waiting for drinks one night right at the bar right next to me.  One night at Havana Club someone pulled their penis out of their pants and asked my friend to hold it. If that wasn’t bad enough about 30 minutes later he put his hand down her shirt to grab her breast. When we informed the security two things happened he shrugged his shoulders and pretended not to speak English.     9. A drunk Canadian woman screamed out at the lobby that I was “a Cuban whore” as I was speaking with a Canadian white man at the lobby. This is the point that I was in tears! The next morning I went to the AC rep and I explained to him what was happening here and he tried to help however if I wanted to switch resorts I had to pay a difference with 2 days left, it did not make much sense so we decided against it. Every day I would speak to Guest Services but there were so many issues and guests that had complainants they could not do much other than write our concerns down. When I got a hold of the commercial manager and he indicated that he was unaware of any of our concerns.     10. There was mold everywhere. Not just spots but our bathroom had it in the shower, on the mirror around the sink…EVERYWHERE.  There was mold in the swim up pool and on the floor in the common areas also. Stay away!

    “Disappointed”

I really had no expectations of Cuba, so expected very little. Very little critters in my room. Very little food that was edible. Some of the staff were so rude but others are genuinely sweet and very likeable. Apparently this hotel was taken over by new owners in January. I can only assume they want to get the most out of it before it collapses. Beach walk no breeze, fell off the beaten track and broke my back.
