Allegro Playacar reviewed by 30Maryann on . Wonderful food and terrific service Hard to believe but a couple of the service staff remembered us from five years ago! Everything was superb, except no free wifi. We got free WIFI in Huatulco, so it was kind of a pain to have to pay... Rating: 4

“The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of it All”

I want to start this review by stating it is a rare occasion when you will see me giving a bad review. I try to be honest and share the information a fellow traveler is looking for when making a trip decision. I am going to start by saying I am a My Barcelo member and if I had to book a Barcelo resort in Playa Del Carmen again it would be Xcaret hands down over the Allegro, but after that you are still reading I give you all of the reasons as to why. Check in is at 3 PM and that is pretty typical for the resorts. However, it is important to note that if you do arrive early they do make it possible for you to begin enjoying the resort right away, but they do stick to that strict check in time. Israel greeted us and did a terrific job of explaining the hotel to us. Israel really became our point of contact for many things throughout our stay and he really was one of the best things about this resort. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful and the beach is just simply amazing. The rooms are adequate and clean. The AC could work better and it would help cut down on the humidity in the rooms but hey that is Play weather. The first area which really needs improvement is the food. You are going to get tired very quickly of the food selections. You can only so much mixed veggies and different types of chopped up meat. You would think that being in Mexico tortillas would be plentiful but they are not. You have to really search to find a tortilla. The guacamole come out of a bag which should be considered sacrilege in Mexico. I think the resort is really missing one of the key reasons of why people come to Mexico and that is the food. Fresh, good, Mexican food. Allegro is not even close in this areas. The a la carte restaurants are not great even if you are able to get a reservation but even though they have nightly empty tables you most likely will struggle. We traveled during there during carnival. Nothing happened or was pointed out. On Valentines Day they did a special dinner for couples on the beach for an extra charge. Since we are part of My Barcelo you would think we would have been asked or informed about it. We had no idea. My husbands birthday passed during our stay and not once did the resort recognize it. You would expect more and it just was not there. The best thing about the food was Humberto who always greeted us a smile and always willing to help. He is one of the best things as well. There was a problem with the electric and I have shared this but what it taught me is that there are major communication problems among the staff. You get many different stories about things and almost everything contradicts everything else. If you have a disability this might not be the resort for you. Even though they apologized for an instance happening within our party it was too late because it should have not happened at all. Victor was great and helped us as best as he was able but when a person cannot sleep because of the resort oversight and error then a credit should have occurred and what was given was a late checkout. The entertainment is actually very good. The Michael Jack Show is amazing and a whole lot of fun. The basics if you are coming for a great beach then you will be happy. If you want all of those other great things resorts give along with the beach then skip this one and go to one of the other great Barcelo properties because you will be much much happier. This was a hard review because the people are truly the best thing about this resort but it takes more than just great people. You have to give a great product for them to deliver and in this case it is just not there.

    “Worst Vacation”

Experience at this hotel was horrible compared to their other resorts, they do not go out of their way to make anything right. No waiters on beach. Air in room did not work the whole vacation, and would not let you pay for late check out, but you talked to others who were allowed to.

    “Below Our Expectations”

I have to start off by saying that this is the Third "all inclusive" resort I have stayed at. So, I might not a vast amount of experience when it comes to "all inclusive" hotels. With that said, this resort was the worse of them all. My family and I (group of 13 people) went to Cancun and Playa del Carmen for a week. We stared in Canun, where we also stayed at an all inclusive resort, and ended our trip with 5 days in Playa del Carmen. As I said before this resort was the worse of any i've stayed in the past. Here is my list of complaints and you can judge for yourself if they're reasonable or common for "all inlcusive" resort. Check-In: We arrived around 12:30 pm and already figured we might not be able to check in until 3 pm. I heard hotels can be very strict on that. We did a pre-check in but were not able to get our rooms until EXACTLY 3:00 pm. We asked around 2 pm, they said "no". Asked again at 2:30 pm, "no". Once again at 2:45 pm and we had to stand at the counter until the clock hit exactly 3 pm. They kept saying it was their system, and that might be the case, so change the system. During this check-in period some of us were interested in upgrading and apparently not a single person at the front desk was able to give us any information on any of our rooms except what building it was located in. Once we checked in we were given our room number. However, when we asked if we had ocean view and to our shock they could not tell us! they had no idea where exactly our room was located! how is this possible? Rooms: The first thing that came to my mind when I opened the door was a college dorm room. Not because it was ugly, but because it was so small. On top of that we had two double beds. Taking up even more room. It was just my wife and I. I have no idea how they would even allow 4 people in one room. The toilet and shower are in their own "room" as in there a door to be closed. The sink is outside facing the beds. So if you wake in the middle of the night to use the restroom and need to wash your hands, expect to wake up the other/s sleeping. Restaurants: Sub-par, even for an all-inclusive. They don't have all the restaurants open each they, they rotate them. Also, there are strict hours one can use each restaurant. breakfast buffet is 7-11am, lunch 12-... and so on. We figured we would order room service one morning when we were running late, just to find out that room service is not available. I ordered room service every morning at our hotel in cancun with no issues. I was at an all-inclusive in Puerto Vallarta where we ordered room service at 1 am! yes, at 1 am. Pool: The pools are small and most of the time crowded with children. Beach: The beach is nice. Same you'll find all through out Playa del Carmen. I wish they would have offered umbrellas, since it can get quite hot after sun bathing for a while. Beach Towels: You are allowed 1 beach towel per person. If you lose it they will charge you $25 per towel. Again, at all the previous all-inclusive resorts we would just walk up to the kiosk and ask for as many towels as we wanted. Going in to town: The resort is within the Playacar residential community. Which means it's gated and if you want to walk into town it will take about 20-30 minutes depending on how fast you walk or a $100 pesos taxi ride. They don't offer bikes, but will tell you where you can go rent some. Anyway, the resort itself i nice. Nothing spectacular. We would have enjoyed the resort much more if the people at the reception would have been friendly, understanding and more informed about their own resort.

    “Would love to go back”

Probably the first resort that I’ve been positive I want to come back to. Well laid out, beautiful, small resort with a beautiful huge beach (and lots of loungers). The rooms were clean and nicely decorated – rather small but loved the thatched roof on each building and enjoyed the hammock on the deck. Wonderful food! We went to all three a la cartes – Mexican was delicious, Asian very good, but maybe we caught the Italian on a bad night. It was cold, noisy and the food was a little disappointing. One “not so great” is that the a la cartes seem to be short staffed. But considering how little staff they work with it was efficient. Evening entertainment was very good for such a small resort. And the entertainment team did a good job during the day as well. The pool where the entertainment team worked during the day is a plain rectangular pool. If there are activities there it’s fun, but to swim around in, nothing to really see. One concern we had was during the foam party – it is very fun for everyone and we enjoyed sitting by and watching, but the foam builds up so much that a little girl (about 4) walked too close to the edge of the pool and slipped in under the all the foam. If her father hadn’t been right there and we hadn’t been watching no one would have known she was under the foam. Very scary and something to really watch for. The quiet pool had a couple of sections to swim around in, so a little more enjoyable. Wonderful staff as well. Very friendly and quite efficient in their work. Very pleasant stay. We will watch for good prices for it again.
