“The Realest Review: Cuba Edition (Read If You're Going Here)”

This was my first time in Cuba so I didn't really have many expectations other than hoping it didn't rain throughout our entire trip. My family and I wanted to get away for the weekend and after reviewing other countries in the caribbean Cuba seemed to have the best bang for our buck. We all purchased Elite Plus (highly recommended) so we didn't wait long to get onto the plane. We flew with Sunwing. The plane, though, was the basically the first indicator of how our trip was going to be. It was a very turbulent flight. At one point the wing (I had a window seat) was looking like it was falling apart mid-flight. The landing was much worst. We were descending too fast where it felt like we were on a roller coaster. Everyone on board was like "WhOoOa" the funny thing was the captain said earlier that there were 6 people in the cockpit. They were definitely training someone during our flight. We made it to Cuba safely. Now we reached our hotel... Barcelo Solymar hotel is located in the heart of Varadero. The hotel looks like it was built in the early 2000s and has yet to make any restorations. Check-in was fine, when one my cousins checked into his room (bachelor room) he was greeted by a lizard inside. The two tangoed for a bit until he captured it and set the wild amphibian back into its habitat. My other cousin was greeted with a cockroach the size of a toonie (A Canadian two dollar coin) a fight ensued where my cousin realized that thing had wings. It came down to the wire but my cousin was the victor. My cousin's room wasn't even cleaned properly which he mentioned to the service staff 3 TIMES to which they finally fulfilled his request. The staff there is hit or miss. The majority of them though are nice. My room was in the hotel (It's cheaper but I found it better than the bachelor). The room wasn't bad but the washroom was run down. Leaks from the ceilings, broken shower doors, a toilet that didn't properly flush, it was pretty gross. After we settled and checked in we went to get some food.. The food at Barcelo Solymar is terrible my goodness. Everything tasted the same or had little to no flavor. My cousin brought his own hot sauce and ketchup to sooth the tastelessness. It's definitely a race to the buffet BUT the flies will always beat you to it. Every. Single. Time. The scambled eggs were oozing, the bacon wasn't bacon, the chicken was a hybrid of two other animals geez, the only decent food there were the french fries and bread. You definitely need to leave the resort to enjoy any proper meal. Onto the positives... The beach was amazing! The water is clear, warm and calm. You can swim in the ocean for hours letting the tide take you away while you enjoy a nice drink to cool off. There's a bar near the beach. It's a bit of a walk depending on where you are on the beach (wear sandals cause that sand is HOT). We befriended some of the locals which one of the three reasons I'm not giving this experience anymore than a 2. The locals brought us out to all the nice restaurants, clubs and attraction sites including a two-hour road trip to Havana. You need to befriend the right people to get the right experience. One thing I've noticed about everyone's complains on here is that they're complaining about every little thing that annoyed them. They sound entitled, old and out of touch. Even though I didn't enjoy my stay I'm not mad at anyone... I got what I paid for - a cheap trip. This trip would ideal for anyone 18-26 years old in age. If you are older than that you need to put down another 500-800 dollars more for the "pampering" experience. Lastly, the better you tip.. the better your: room, access to things at the resort/island, experience. Everyone wants your dollar at Barcelo Solymar and Cuba in general (they have their own tourist currency) make sure you give it to the right person. In summary: you get what you pay for. If you're looking for a inexpensive experience, can socialize with the locals, and came from humble beginnings...you'll be fine, but I doubt you'll be back though. Cheers!

    “Hotel is completely rundown”

Hotel is completely rundown, this hotel needs to shut down for complete overhaul and remodeling. The lobby ceiling is broken from water filtrations, dripping water in various areas of lobby and other areas of the main floor. The main pool had a greenish color when I stayed there for three days, the last day was July 6th 2018 the water surface on the pool had a slushy green algae that grew overnight with an unpleasurable odor. The only restaurant you're able to eat at in the whole hotel is the buffet because it is impossible to get a reservation for the other restaurants the hotel says to have available. The air conditioning does not work in the rooms, we had to sleep without covers to not sweat all night, the hotel never fixed it. The towels for the room were only hand towels, the hotel never gave us human sized towels for drying yourself after taking a shower we had to dry ourselves with hand towels (only one tiny towel for each person). There is no free wifi in the hotel, you can only buy a wifi card that has to be used in the lobby because there is no signal in the rest of the hotel grounds not even in the rooms. The last day we ate breakfast at the hotel buffet, I ate for the first time of the trip some chorizo with my scrambled egg which apparently caused an illness. I started vomiting heavily at 3pm on Friday but we were already in Havana since we checked out at 12pm. I almost died from this illness since the symptoms lasted until I was attended to by friends of family which are doctors in Cuba. I had to get injections and an IV to get me back to life after vomiting continuously for 8 hours. THIS HOTEL NEEDS TO BE SHUTDOWN, there is no sanity in the hotel. The hotel staff is also not nice at all, but I would assume it is from the poor hotel employee attention and underpaid, a hotel employee commented to us one day. This hotel is also very expensive!!!! Worst hotel experience of my life!!!!!

    “Mediocre”

I’ve visited Barcelo twice. The first time 7 years ago, I considered it one of my favourite destinations. However, I went this year and it’s amazing how a resort can deteriorate over time and staff have lost all enthusiasm. Given, some of the staff are really friendly and remain consistently friendly, while others seem like miserable people and have no problem ruining your day. I had an issue with bugs in my room. They told me they “sprayed” it and I managed to get more bites than before. They eventually gave me another room after having to visit the medical clinic for the bug bites. Look forward to having defects in your room, either the shower door is broken, or the lights are busted. The pillows smelled like somebody’s odour has permanently stained it. The swimming pool looked like the filter has backed up and there was a green layer of who-knows-what floating atop. I’m not sure how manners work there, but people have no problem being in your personal space. There were many guests who brought their own speakers and BLAST their music so loud with no regard for anybody else’s preference. They would even do this at site viewing locations and completely kill the mood, as I did not want to hear blasted Spanish music while visiting a beautiful cave. I had someone stand in front of my room blasting music, as I looked out, they were literally just standing there with a speaker in their hand and chatting with a friend. I’m not sure since when that was a thing where visitors can do whatever they want to alter the environment, but that needs to be reconsidered. Pros: It was a great location for access to the beach and the city. I was thankful for access to Arenas Blancas resort as their pool seemed cleaner. The food didn’t give me a hard time, but be sure to rsvp the restaurants because the food is 10 times better there. They offer a wide range of services and stores that makes it more convenient when you need to exchange money, buy cigarettes, buy souvenirs, or even snacks. My recommendation? It’s bearable if you’re into having an inexpensive trip, but if you don’t mind spending a few hundred extra, you’re better off going somewhere else.

    “Çok güzel bir plaj...”

2 gece konakladığımız beyaz kumları ve plajından çok mutlu kaldığımız bir otel oldu. Restoranları geniş seçeneğe sahip ve yemekler lezzetli. Odalar da çok konforlu değil fakat rahat ve temiz. Barlarında sunulan çeşitler pek fazla değil.
