    “Amazing trip”

Beautiful resort with great service and staff. The games and activities directors were fun and full of energy. Ximena was the best dance instructor we had over the trip and was a phenomenal person to meet and interact with.

    “Bracelet hell”

First let me start by saying our family goes on many vacations. Every year some place new for the last 23 years. We have loved Mexico in the past but this year it was so different. First of all let’s talk about the resort. We stayed at the barcelo maya caribe and got a premium junior swim up suite. The room says it fits 4 adults. That is a stretch. When I got a suite I thought there would be be way more room. Loved the swim up part but looking back it wasn’t worth the upgrade to me. Over all the whole premium upgrade thing is a rip off. And it certainly isn’t an all inclusive resort. EVERYTHING is an additional price. The other family we were with got put in the beach resort which we requested they be in the same resort but they didn’t honor that and we had to ask for it and they had to upgrade to premium if they wanted to do that. In all actuality the caribe and the maya beach are pretty close together so it ended up not being an issue but just disappointed. Back to our room. 2 small drawers only. No space to put luggage other than one space and the walk out area had a table in the middle that needed to be moved every-time we wanted to go out to use the pool. No steps to get out of the pool on the other side which would have been convenient. The “wooden” pools between rooms had very little privacy and one even rotted and fell over when we were there. The room itself was less than desirable. First off there is no door to the bathroom it’s open. Traveling with 17 year old boys this isn’t optimal. They have frosted glass doors on the individual toilet and shower but the bathroom in general is open and can’t be used if someone is over there. Made for a long pre-dress prior to dinner. The mini bar has very limited things and a couple small bags of chips. 2 regular bottles of water for 4 people didn’t last an hour. Some days it didn’t get restocked. I would call down they would tell me someone would be right there and no one would show up so you had to go to the bar or Buffett or the lobby to get bottles of water. Oh and I was told I would get petit fours and champagne upon arrival I got neither. The other couple that came with us got chocolate covered strawberries with a regular room we got nothing. I did say something and the lady in the premium lobby space just rolled her eyes and said so do you want strawberries. I said yes and I never got them. It wasn’t about the strawberries it was about getting was is advertised and paid for. Onto the food and drinks. Mediocre at best is all I can say. Somethings are better than others best to have them make your eggs or food than grab from buffet tables. Fresh fruit daily was amazing. Wait staff in Buffett in the caribe were all great and if you leave them a couple dollars every time they really take care of you. The drinks at the bar. Awful! Unless you ask them to make them from the blender but you can only do this if you have the platinum bracelet with premium liquor. The kids drinks from the machine tasted so bad like plastic I finally made them start making the virgin drinks in the blender too. They weren’t overly happy about it. Pool is nice. Not enough activities. We came with 2 17 year old boys who were going to be seniors and 2 13 year olds. The 17 year old boys, both athletes were not allowed to use the gym because they weren’t 18. This was extremely disappointing as they do summer workouts for their respective sports and couldn’t train. The teen club in the mall is not well promoted so no one goes. Not a good place for 17 year olds. Nothing to do. The restaurants. The Brazilian steak house at the palace was the best one out of them all but again if you don’t have the platinum bracelet than you can’t go. The waiter named Alfredo was so fantastic we wrote a review just for him. The other restaurants we went to were just ok. The steakhouse at the tropical was good too but same sides for most part every restaurant. I personally didn’t like the Italian restaurant. Some of our party did. The Japanese isn’t like the American hibachi. No yum yum sauce so go prepared. On to the beach. Can you say seaweed!!! No matter where you went it was impossible to get into the water. The seaweed was awful and stunk so bad. I did see them try to remove it for the beaches but it was just everywhere and after doing some research all of Mexico was and has been dealing with it. I was super disappointed about that. My kids don’t love the beach so it didn’t bother them. We did one excursion the xel ha water park. They sold it to me as good for the teenagers because of the zip lines and rope course etc. well... it wasn’t much of a zip line. It dropped you half way, actually slid you into the water. Not very exciting at all. The best part of that park was the bike ride to the river. The river was fun and nice but nothing exciting. In the past we had visited xcaret and that is amazing. Go there instead. The caves in xel ha weren’t even caves and you couldn’t even swim out of them because of the seaweed. Not worth the $115 to go. Take a cab if you want to see it and pay the walk up price. I wish we would have done that. Overall the resort is beautiful they take great care of the landscaping they work very hard. So much that we tipped one of the landscapers before we left because they all work so hard. The shows were ok. Left after a few songs nothing that exciting to stay up for.

Friendly staff . Gabriela, Armando, Ramon, and Jonatan, were all very helpful in guiding us. Giving us a warm and hospitable feeling right from the beginning. They explained all the options and provided us suitable options for our skills, schedule and abilities. I would definitely ask for these folks fir a fun friendly and rocking time at the Barcelo water sports activities booth.

“An Amazing Experience "As You Expect and Deserve."”

Full disclosure, we are regular "Barcelo-holics" and this was our 13th trip in 9 years. That being said, from our first visit to our most recent the most impressive thing about the Barcelo Maya Resort is the focus on the guests we see from every member of their large staffs. The attitude expressed by Sr. Christian at the Caribe echoed all the way to the landscaper knocking coconuts or the maintenance crew painting near our pools. Housekeeper; guest reception team, bellman, and everyone in between provided the services we have come to "Expect " and, in fairness, still feel like we don't really deserve. We go at least once a year to this resort and have found reasons every time to go back. We feel safe on and off the property. Managers at the resort are personable and approachable. We consider many of the staff our friends and reconnect on each visit. While turnover is an issue everywhere there are employees we encounter year after year that we look forward to seeing.
