    “Nice hotel”

I spent a week in this hotel with my husband and child. The grounds, beach and the pools are beautiful, similar to other resorts we have been to in this area. The same can be said about the rooms: simple but nice enough, although the mattresses were a bit too soft for us. We booked the Maya Colonial but were technically in the Maya Tropical...not sure if there are real differences between the different hotels. They have a bit of a complicated system to book the a la carte restaurants. I had to go the first day and try to sort out all the dinners in advance as the availability was pretty limited. Remember to bring long trousers as there is a dress code for the a la carte restaurants. The spa is beautiful and i recommend the pool circuit, but make sure they take your reservation well as they messed up my husband's and it was really disappointing. Mistakes can happen, but they didn't provide any acceptable solution or compensation. Wifi: Only available from 10am to 5.30pm in the shopping mall...consider it if you need to be connected! It was an issue for us who didn't want to pay 12usd per day just to be able to be in touch with home. We went to the water park and the Ventura rides paying extra. It was all very good, just remember it is not included in the price All in all a nice resort, but would benefit of a more practical approach to service and reservations.

    “Enjoyable Visit”

This very large resort was very nice and had great service. The food was very good, especially the Japanese restaurant! The pool area was beautiful and the kid’s water park seemed very fun. There could be a few improvements. I would suggest more staff at the pool bars so there are fewer lineups. Also, our 9-month-old baby got hand, foot and mouth disease. He is too young to play with other kids so we suspect he got it from the pool water, or from one of the restaurant high chairs. Other than that unfortunate occurrence, we had a nice trip.

“Two weeks in the sunny south”

We were a group of seven, adults...the grounds are stunning and well kept, the a la cartes great with excellent service.....the buffets standard with poor service until we found an amazing waiter Daniel Caamal, always had our coffee and juice with a smile...thank you Daniel. The housekeeping was extremely poor especially for a 4* hotel...we stopped tipping on a regular basis, and one day our room was not made up until we made a phone call.....small things however I personally expected better. Other little issues mimosas were not available at breakfast, until there was a large convention at the resort....and the bars did not open until noon for alcoholic beverages...small things however when on vacation I like to be spoiled.... Where the water sports were launched was very rocky, watershoes are a must. Would I return to this resort..no however it wasn't all bad

    “Nice, but big!”

We spent a week at The Colonial in January. Upgraded to the Premier section mainly to be close to the beach. It also includes a nice private "Lounge" with nice snacks and premium liquor. Our ground level room technically faced the ocean but the view was of the kids water park and palm trees, but the beach was right behind it. Partially covered patio was nice, especially during one short rain squall, when we enjoyed our complimentary champagne. Can't just head out from your patio however as the sliding door won't lock from the outside. The entire complex with six resorts is huge, but if you stay at any of the four middle resorts you can't use facilities at The Palace and you can't even step foot on The Riviera, which looked kind of sterile and less interesting to us. You could just spend your vacation at your particular resort, but we took in some of the bars and restaurants and shows at the other three. Shows were pretty good, but they need to work on the sound for the Michael Jackson show. The actor/dancer was good but you could hardly hear the vocals. Being in the Premium section meant we could set up a different a la cart restaurant for all of the coming nights. All were good, the Kyoto Tepanyaki was fun and included a nice lobster tail. The beef and steaks at the restaurants was surprisingly good. The staff were all friendly and our waitress Auscencia Cayenne was particularly good. The beach is huge, no problem finding loungers most of the time, although decent shade was tricky some days. Lots of palm trees, but with four of us it was hard to find a large spot that stayed shady for very long. The free form pools were large and beautiful, but kind of cold, but they do have some nice shade over much of the pool loungers. Snorkeling was great! Lots of reef, rock and structure right off the beach, especially between the pier and The Palace. And the green sea turtles were crazy! We've swam with them at Akumal but here they were especially friendly, sometimes having to be pushed away to avoid collisions. Lots of parrot fish, surgeon fish, tangs, permits, french angel fish and even some rays. Lots of fish hanging out under the pier too. One large barracuda was impressive but seemed uninterested in us. You can hop on the open air inter resort bus for some sight seeing or to get from one end to the other. The Mall was interesting and included a carousel, a synthetic ice skating rink and a sports bar with a bowling alley where the drinks are part of your all inclusive deal. This was probably our 20th Caribbean resort over the years and I could see going back someday, especially with the kids and grand kids. We really enjoy snorkeling and much prefer going right off the beach at our leisure rather than signing up for long boat tours. Oh, we did the "water tricycles" too, but wear sandals, the steel bar peddles are killers on bare feet! .
