    “February getaway”

Very relaxing stay. Excellent excursions. Food at the restaurants was very good. The resort is built on a hill so be prepared to walk up and down sidewalks and cart paths. i would recommend taking an excursion or two to get away from the resort and see the rest of Costa Rica and possibly Nicaragua. Loved the weather. Sunshine and 90's. If you want to see more green at this time of year you have to go up to the mountains. The trip to Nicaragua with Gustavo was long, but well worth while. A great opportunity to see Nicaragua.

    “1 week stay Feb 8-15”

Room (2406) was beautifully situated. Always clean and bar stocked every day. I was obsessed with the family of monkeys who you would find swinging in the trees around the resort. Food was actually good for that size resort. Staff were friendly. Very quiet (some might say isolated) location. No other hotels or private residences close by. Shuttle bus into Coco Beach is handy. The quality of tours they offer is very good too.

    “Great Country, ok resort”

First time in Costa Rica, beautiful place! The resort is set on a hillside right on the bay. They gave us a spectacular room all the way on the end of the property with a great view right out to the bay. With the resort being set into the hillside, there are many stairs to climb to get around so that can get a little annoying, but it’s not the end of the world. The drinks are subpar, there is only one swim up bar, and no beach bar. The servers did come around, but you had to double up to make up for the wait times. No servers on the beach though, so if you want drinks down there you have to carry them down there(and it’s a bit of walk to get there). The beach is awesome at low tide, but nonexistent at high tide .We paid for the upgraded premium level lounge/ service package and that helped us get the great room. The premium level lounge has the best liquor/drinks and also the best WiFi, but’s al the way at the top level and main lounge area. They also have good snacks and great views being high up. The premium package included the mini bar in your room but that amounts to 2 beers a day and some sodas and somehow get forgetting to fill ours so I would have to call. The two ala carts restaurants were awesome, but the buffets sucked and if you don’t pay for the premium package your only guaranteed a spot in the restaurants 2 nights per every 7. The room service food is really good, so we ate that a lot, especially for breakfast. We are early risers and nothing is open, including room service, until 7am, so we had Alex in the premium lounge set us up with automatic room service deliveries for breakfast which worked out well. But again you don’t get any of that if you don’t pay for premium level. The people who work at the resort are extremely nice and friendly and we did have a good time here, but we are used to a higher level of quality for food and drinks at all inclusives. We members at Karisma resorts and they are top notch. We love Costa Rica and are definitely going back, but not staying in a resort. We think this place can be enjoyed doing your own thing.

“Exactly what we were looking for! Perfect, quiet resort for couples to reconnect.”

My husband and I just returned from an amazing trip to Costa Rica and a wonderful stay at The Occidental Papagayo. The resort is spread out over a large mountainside property and is immaculately maintained and lush, even in the dry season. This is the perfect resort for couples looking to reconnect and enjoy some quite R&R, this is absolutely not a wild party resort with hopping night life. Yes there are plenty of drinks to be had poolside or at the various bars but we found the vibe to be very laid back and friendly. Many couples we met turned in early to get up early the next morning and take off to the next adventure. If you are looking for an all inclusive property to party at and not leave for a week, this is probably not the best place for you. I think most people staying here enjoyed the all inclusive amenities while spending the majority of their time exploring the country off resort. The area is safe, roads are nice, people are friendly and there is so much to see it would be a shame to not experience everything the Guancaste province has to offer. The resort itself is great spot for nature enthusiasts; we saw families of howler monkeys, raccoons, tropical birds, hummingbirds and iguanas right on the property not to mention the ocean life that I observed while snorkeling off shore. At our travel agent's recommendation, we upgraded to the Premium Level rooms and are very glad that we did so. The in room wi-fi was adequate to keep in touch with family at home and the ocean view from building 8 was out of this world. We spent a lot of time enjoying the breezy views from our terrace. In room espresso station was a nice surprise and was refilled daily along with soda, water and beer. We did bring refillable water bottles and had no issues filling them around the resort throughout the day. The premium lounge also offered a private concierge to assist with dinner reservations, excursion bookings and general inquiries along with top shelf liquor and appetizers before dinner. We knew going in that this property would require a lot of walking and a lot of stairs but being in generally good shape, my husband and I did not mind this. There were several people with mobility issues on resort at the time we were there and there were always helpful employees in golf carts or trucks stopping to assist them and give them a lift. Each and every member of the staff that we met there was absolutely wonderful. I have never been on a resort where there wasn't at least someone we met who would be better off in a different occupation. From housekeeping staff to bar servers and security, EVERY person greeted you with a smile and seemed to be genuinely happy helping visitors. As far as the food goes, we realized that at a small resort there aren’t going to be endless food options but we found that there was always something tasty on the buffet and enjoyed our visits to the Oriental and Italian restaurants as well. We did enjoy a few meals off property in local towns of Playa Hermosa and Playa del Coco which were affordable and delicious. All of our excursions we booked through Roberto at Costa Rica Tours and Concierge and recommend him highly. He can be located at his outdoor office located right on the beach. The beach itself is enormous at low tide and very small at high tide but is very wide and not crowded. Plenty of sun loungers for everyone and lots of shady spots. On the weekends many locals came with their families and we enjoyed listening to their music and visiting with them. Overall, yes, I would return to this resort with my husband. We had a truly enjoyable memorable week getting to know the culture and people of Costa Rica! Pura Vida!

    “Very beautiful BUT....”

We visited the occidental papagayo from February 10th to the 17th. The resort is very lovely well taken care of. The rooms are clean, showers have lots of hot water and great pressure. The ala carts are very yummy and not very difficult to get into. Many reviews state that it is a hard place to get around. It is challenging but manageable. Saw many elderly doing the walks with their canes with little complaint. If you are in a hurry , there was always a golf cart available. The gentleman on the carts are great well humoured men. Food service employees are exceptional with a big shout out to Enrique. Went out of his way to help. Monkeys and iguanas are very abundant. That’s where the good stuff ends. There is NO drink service. If you want one - go get it . They will not bring at all. At the pool bar , tip big and early or they WILL ignore you. Alex being the worst. Was walked by , walked away from, as I didn’t give him $10 a day. The ones that did, had the bottomless glass. The buffet is small and limited choice. What was there was good however. After dinner there was “elevator” music in the lobby. Nothing else! By 9 pm it was a ghost town. There was a very loud disco to help, but .... Be prepared to make your own entertainment if you wish to stay up later. The rooms fridge has 2 water , 2 beer, 2 sodas. For mornings there is 1 whole coffee package. Don’t ask for more, flat out No will be the answer. Wifi is $50 for the week. It’s very sporadic at best. Not worth the dough! The resort seems to cheap out in the places that seem to be somewhat important to an all inclusive. Will I come back? I don’t use the word never! But probably not. Don B.
