    “A Gem!”

    We have just returned from a 2 week vacation at the Occidental Costa Cancun. We have visited Mexico on many different occasions over the past 15 years and have got to say, this has been one of the very best hotels we have ever stayed at. We knew the hotel was a little on the smaller side prior to our visit in comparison to other more facilitated hotels, however, to our surprise, we found the hotel to be extremely well managed with an efficient team of staff eager to make every aspect of our stay enjoyable. The management really seem to look after the staff and the staff in turn look after the guests, in-particular we noticed on Valentine's day the entertainment staff were going around dressed in beautiful cupid costumes, handing out red heart balloons to guests and posing for photos, but then continued to take pictures with individual members of staff afterwards and take the time to hand out personal gifts to them (this was not only really nice, but also refreshing to see). On another occasion, I personally witnessed a guest being extremely rude to one of the maitre d's in the main buffet (Sylvia was the member of staff's name and she always had a beautiful smile and pleasant demeanour for everyone). You could see that Sylvia was a little upset following the rude guests outburst, however, she put a smile back on her face and continued with her job so as not to affect other guests. One of the managers spoke to Sylvia shortly afterwards and took the time to build her back up and reassure her, which was awesome!. Maintenance staff, had all their own personal PPE and lifting belts (again, refreshing to see). One of the maintenance guys (Gerard) was happy to help with locating umbrellas/moving sunbeds around as required. The cleanliness of all areas of the hotel was excellent. The rooms were spacious and the beds were so comfortable, it felt like home from home. Food across all buffets and speciality restaurants was absolutely fantastic. Poolside service was not only efficient, but also one of the best services I have ever encountered (particularly Sandra who always had a smile and was happy in her work). All buffet staff were pretty good across the board, however, our favourite was Pepe Fernandez, who really delivered 'above and beyond' service and time to look after my elderly father who we were lucky to have vacationing with us. Just simple things, like remembering his favourite drink, carrying his soup to the table for him (my dad's hands tend to shake), and just generally making him and indeed us feel really special at all times. The activities and entertainment team, particularly Brandon, Pedro and Juan worked tirelessly day and night to keep the activities going and catered for every age group from the very young to the more senior. The only piece of constructive advice I would offer is to maybe vary the dance shows a little. Believe me, the dancers were all awesome and gave their absolute all for each and every single performance, however, some of the shows, just aren't particularly interesting to watch. Maybe switch it up a little utilising some audience participation type entertainment and alternative with the performances. I've stayed at much bigger hotels in the past, who have ran private events for outside parties at the detriment to other guests staying at the hotel, but I'm glad to say, not on this occasion. I witnessed a number of varying events at this hotel, and the staff still managed to maintain an excellent level of service towards each and every guest staying with them. Bravo! Occidental Cancun Costa. You absolutely deserve a full 5* plus rating and I would definitely visit again should the opportunity arise.

    “Exceeded Expectations”

    Went here for Reading Break from Grad School and the experience exceeded my expectations. This was a wonderful resort to relax at and the size was perfect to be able to mingle with the other guests and meet some wonderful people. The entertainment staff of Pedo, Brandon and Jonathan went above and beyond to make this trip more rememberable, from daily Zumba and crazy games to making recommendations as to where to go out. The food and service had at the Mexican restaurant was by far the best I had on the trip, the room was always cleaned and as pictured in the photos provided by the hotel. I would definitely return!

    “Excellent getaway!”

    Overall everything was excellent. Arrival and check in was smooth and easy. We arrived around 12pm. Checked in. Rooms were ready at 3 as advertised. Rooms have great view and ammenities. The rooms were kept very clean and tidy by staff. The food was better than average for buffet. I have visited multiple resorts and think the food and rooms were way above my expectations. The building was well kept. Pool very clean and large. Food service excellent. Variety of Food at Snack Bar could be better, but it was my choice to eat there. Buffets had plenty of variety. Bars were excellent. 2 recommendations for bars..... First add a Swim Up Bar. Second is add a Solid Surface walkway to Beach Bar. Walkway would allow clean path to sit at the Bar in the evenings after cleaning up from the day activities. Finally, The Staff. Excellent!!!! As a traveller to this country, Remember to tip. It will improve your experience. They deserve it.

    “Good option for families and couples”

    The Occidental Costa Cancun is also called the Barceló (which was confusing since my reservation was for the Occidental Costa Cancun but the taxi drivers all called it the Barceló). We had a room on the first floor with a patio that opened to the pool. Loved this at first, but the issue is the hotel carts. They get food on one side of the room and cart it over to the restaurants by passing 3 sides of the room and the carts are noisy. They start this about 4:30am every morning. If you are a light sleeper, this is a bad choice. The only other issue is restaurant reservations go quickly in the morning (get in line at 6:30am). You don't need a reservation, the buffet is decent, but La Trattoria requires reservations and it is EXCELLENT, especially the Sea Bass and the Lasagna (their steak was not good - we sent it back - but even that they handled with a smile and very quickly). The nightly on-site entertainment was good. I worked out each morning in their gym, and though it was a busy time, I always got a treadmill or a bike, Overall, we really enjoyed it.

    “Mostly very pleasant ”

    The easiest way I think is a list of pros and cons. Pros: 1. Nice room with comfy bed and decent aircon. Free mini bar refreshed daily on all-inclusive deal. 2. Pool spacious and clean. Plenty of deckchairs. 3. Nice beach area and pleasant sea section (artificial sandbank for the hotel alone) 4. Communal spaces such as lobby bar are spacious and bright. Very comfortable. 5. Staff friendly and welcoming. 6. Scrupulously clean in every area. Genuinely one of the highest standards I've seen in a long time. Cons: 1. Wifi is not included and is expensive. If you use your own 3G it is slow. 2. Cocktails of variable quality due to staff's need (presumably at management insistence) to make them so quickly. Wine and beer are a bit average. 3. Food very mixed quality. Breakfast best meal of the day. Lunch buffet usually has something for everyone. The evening meals we tried in the Italian and Mexican restaurants were disappointing. We switched to having a big breakfast and late lunch and skipping dinner by the end. 4. The evening entertainment is loud! It's from 9-10 with a bit of leakage either side. All the rooms face onto the central space so getting young ones to sleep before 10.30 is nigh on impossible. 5. Timeshare con: on arrival we were told that we could visit their sister hotel further down the peninsula and enjoy their facilities exactly as at our hotel - food, drink, pools etc. We decided to take up this offer one day for a change of scene. On attempting to do so we were told there was only one transport available which was too late for us so that day we arranged it for the next day. One day later therefore we pitched up (with 6 month old baby in tow). Only at this stage did the concierge mention a 90 minute tour when we got there. We thought, ok nice to look around - probably won't take that long. Taxi was hailed (why the specific pick up time then?) and we travelled to the Occidental Tucancún. On arrival we were greeted warmly and lead to the vacation club. It soon dawned on us that we were being dragged into more than we had bargained for. We had to show ID and a current credit card. We were then taken for breakfast (we'd already eaten!) and given the hard sell on timeshares in the company. We soon indicated that this was not something we were interested in. When that message finally sunk in, we were duly ejected and 'checked out'. No tour of hotel, no use of their facilities and no return taxi! Do not fall for this scam. If they try to sweet talk you into visiting another hotel it is all a sales pitch and you will get nothing out of it unless you're planning to sign up to a 25 year timeshare (yes, this is what they were pressing). 6. A bit remote. The main hotel district is about a 10 min taxi ride. (c.M$200 or £10). Overall, a nice hotel with a mostly decent all-inclusive selection of food and drink. Expect sleep disturbance and corporate bothering but enjoy the lovely poolside and comfy rooms. I don't regret booking here at all but not sure I'd come again.
