    “Great place if you want tropics”

    Not our favorite Occidental experience. Food repeative and lack eye appeal even though there were some garnish displays. Had party of eight and if you did not like the theme meal you would have to separate for meals.

    “An Ok place for a day pass”

    We (my husband and 2 other couples) wanted a place to hang out at for the day, so we found this resort. The check in process was a pain. Took over a half hour! And I have no idea why - we were the only ones checking in! The beach was much smaller than expected and there were no palapas (as pictured), so not enough shade for those of us with very white skin. That was disappointing. The water was very murky and had a lot of seaweed, but I think they had just had a storm the night before, so maybe it's usually nicer. The grounds were gorgeous and I would have had fun spending a few hours wandering around checking out the wildlife, but not enough time. The adults only pool was wonderful and I would hang there if I had to do it over again. The lunch buffet was ok, nothing extraordinary, but worked fine for our needs. I would consider staying here if I was visiting Cozumel for more than one day. The resort was really pretty.

    “Emphasis on Snorkeling and/or Diving at Cozumel’s Many Reefs”

    We have been taking a winter Caribbean vacation almost every year since 2001, but this was our first trip to Cozumel. We like to snorkel and see fish so the south-western coast seemed to be the place to be. There are only a handful of all inclusive beachfront resorts along that part of the island. We chose the Occidental resort because of the location, the price, and Trip Advisor reviews. Other perceptions: POSITIVE: • Relatively small resort, intimate, everything within easy walking distance. • We booked our trip using Delta.com’s vacation package. Delta’s offering included an All-Inclusive Plus amenities which included a golf cart drive with our luggage to and from the registration office as soon as we arrived and when we left, a special reception area located at the Royal Level area with facilitated registration and check-out procedures, availability of specialty dining every night (with a reservation). We also got our pool towels and one on one individualized friendly service there every day. They always had champagne on ice available. • Room (#1837) was typical basic resort, very clean, spacious and reasonably well appointed. Great tiled large bathroom with hair dryer, shampoo, body wash, large glass shower with a rain head, standard bathtub and face cloths. • Small balcony with 2 chairs and small table. I brought line & clothespins which was very handy. • Quiet at night with door closed for air conditioning. Loud cackling of LOTS of birds at sundown, but it recedes as evening descends. • Clientele was primarily English speaking, with many upper mid-westerners and Canadian folks. Not a lot of children. • Similarly, most of the service staff speaks English. • Long wooden boardwalk through the mangrove to the beach/pool. (Never saw any interesting creatures there.) • Building #18 close to guest service area, adult only pool with bar, boardwalk to beach/pool. • A variety of fish to see with snorkels at hotel beach. Great sunsets, calm waters. • Booked a 3 ½ hour great snorkeling trip out to two reefs through Pro Dive water sports center at resort with guide Jonathon Garcia (approx. $60 pp.). We also booked another 2 ½ hour snorkel trip to different areas of same reefs and a star fish site through our on-site Delta representative - Israel ($56 pp.) We enjoyed both. • Booked an 8+ hour guided Jeep expedition, again through our Delta representative ($116 pp) The Jeep caravan picked us up and dropped us at our hotel. The excursion included sharing a Jeep with another couple (share the driving), a stop at a crocodile marsh (did not see any, but the view from the tower was nice), a stop at lighthouse which we could climb for a great view, a snorkeling stop at a great beach with very clear water to see the fish, a Mexican buffet at the beach which was very tasty, a drive up the eastern coast, a short tour of the San Gervasio Mayan ruins (need more time there), and a tour of a Tequila factory (not great). • One hour free use of snorkel, mask and fins pp each day. • Small, intimate shows - Mexican Folklorico; Flame Dancers; “Name that Tune.” Simpler offerings like Karaoke that we did not attend were not in the prime entertainment area. Since we enjoy dancing (as did other guests) we loved the Tequila Shot Band with Rafa Lezama singer and guitar, Amilcar on bass, Mario on drums and Luis on keyboards. We were blessed with enjoying them one evening our first week and then as a special treat on Valentine’s Day. • Special decorations in the buffet area for Valentine Night. Great photo opportunity. • For all but one change over day, there were enough lounge chairs IN THE SUN, without reserving early. • Gracious, very hard workers including bar tenders, room attendants and restaurant staff. We chose to tip them $1 – 3 regularly. • FOOD – Seafood Restaurant, Coral, was fast, delicious and a great setting by the ocean. At the lunch buffet, try the burgers, great BEEF (not something we eat often.) Varied international food theme nights at the buffet. I have food allergies and managed to eat well. Saw lots of men making their own soft serve ice cream cones. Yummy! Yes, we gained some weight. Be willing to try new flavors and foods! I came home and bought Jicama for our salads. LESS DESIRABLE: • Lack of shade at the beach. Palm umbrella huts were removed by new owners and replaced by palm trees which have not fully matured as yet. I went down to the beach by 7:30 AM to drag loungers behind the massage studio under the trees which provided all day shade. • Two of seven nights there wasn’t entertainment in the plaza. See above. • No exciting shopping on site. Should bring in several local, good quality merchants in the main entertainment area at least one night a week. • Beach massage reportedly cost $85 per half hour. We sat close by and never saw anyone utilizing the service. • We typically like to have the windows open in our room. Because of the evening/night dew our third floor room was damp so we had to use the air conditioning to keep our clothes and bedding dry. We don’t like a cold room so we would set it one or two degrees less than the air temperature just so it would run.

    “Resort for the day”

    I booked this through "Resort for the day" as we needed a place to hang out for the day after arriving by a cruise ship. Cost was $70 US per person and all-inclusive. Beautiful place with friendly staff. Plenty of things to do. Food was great with plenty of options and great wait staff. Although I rarely drink, the drinks were flowing and I never saw such a busy bartender! They might want to use 2 bartenders at the pool area to speed up the orders as there was always a line waiting for drinks. Very clean resort and we would definitely go back. The beach area can get crowded too, so get a spot early.

    “first time out of the US was great!”

    was my first time out of the U.S and had a great time employees are very nice and helpful. resort was full but you couldn't tell, it was very peaceful. rooms were clean and the food was great. never have i ate so much in my life.
