    “Great Place”

This place was great, well worth the money. I feel like the rooms could use a little updating but they weren't bad at all. Food was decent, somethings could be switched up a little more. The views were amazing. It was also only about a 20 minute ride to downtown, which was not bad at all. Staff was friendly and help at all time.

    “Mostly a Very Good Experience”

We have stayed at several Barcelo Hotels over the years because we have found them, generally, to be very pleasant places. So, when we found a package at the Barceló Grand Faro Los Cabos for the first week of September for a thoroughly reasonable price, we thought it might be worthwhile, especially since we figured it would not be very crowded. That did turn out to be the case. The hotel itself was probably as good as any of the Barcelo hotels we have stayed at in the past; and, though we knew that it would be quieter at this time of the year, most everything was open, at least in a limited fashion. One of the disadvantages of all the resorts in this area is that one should really not go into the ocean at all. In fact, the black flag is up all down the beach. Even though the water was a no go, one of our fondest memories will be walking down the wide beach at sunrise and seeing the painted sky. On the other hand, this Barcelo had more pool space than any resort that I have been in. In fact, it has five different pools of various sizes and types. That also means that there is plenty of space beside the pools, to sit. The other thing I was happy to see was that the resort has made it a policy of removing items left to reserve seats at the pool while people wander off for extended periods. I hope they keep it up, even though it will probably annoy the inconsiderate guests. The hotel was always clean and the staff was as helpful and friendly as we have ever experienced. Our room was spacious, with a good bed, a nice balcony, effective air-conditioning, and a reasonable bathroom with a walk-in shower. The room was east facing, so we had morning sun, but not evening heat. We had the added entertainment in our room of a toilet that screamed loudly like it was being tortured every time it was flushed. Initially, we found it annoying, but it became a source of amusement and jokes. I am not sure if the people in the rooms around us were as amused. The use of a room “key” built into the wristband is an excellent feature. The dining rooms were pleasant places to eat and the food was generally good. There was a reasonable choice, though not for me since I have food issues. I had a hard time finding much I could eat because I could not easily make it understood what I can’t eat. The buffets seemed to be using more of a “station” approach than I have seen in the past – this is a good thing since it allows the guests a little more control over what they are getting. I was particularly happy with the Pizza station and I noticed many people ordered there. As well as the obligatory, and good, pool bar, there is a spacious lobby and lobby bar, and what is called the sky bar, which is on top of a tower. Though all the bars were pleasant, it was particularly nice to go up to the sky bar in the evening when one could see the activity in the streets and the lights of the town. The choice of beverages was quite good in all the bars. The nightly entertainment was pretty much the usual that one would expect at resorts with one exception. One of the nights, the entertainment was just three singers called “the Tenors”. They were the only evening entertainment that we actually sat through completely. They were very good singers with an excellent repertoire. This was probably the best evening of entertainment that I have ever sat through at a resort. Across the street from the resort are several businesses, restaurants, and bars which provided some interest, when one feels like one needs a change, including one very pleasant coffee shop, the Café Cabo. It is also possible to take an easy and inexpensive cab ride to the centre of the old town. There was a bit of renovation going on while we were there. It appears that the resort is adding a specialty coffee bar and some type of a wine experience. Both of these should be welcome additions. Was everything perfect? No. Anybody who expects perfection is living in a dream world. I don’t know how much the resort can do about it, but there was not enough shade around the pool for those of us who the sun hates. Also, I would love to see a resort recognize that many people – taller, bigger, older, people or those with physical issues – find it hard to use the loungers that are all around the pool. Is there no way to provide some regular style chairs? Obviously, that includes me. Considering the aging population, this may affect the number of future guests. We live in a connected world where most people use email or other on-line resources. In most of the hotels I stay in, WiFi is part of the included amenities. In some cases, it is only in the lobby. I am disappointed that the resort charges not only such a high fee for WiFi use, but any fee at all. For all I know, this may be chain-wide policy, but it is not what modern travellers expect and it probably is already discouraging possible guests. There were three a la carte restaurants; but, only being able to reserve 24 hours in advance - meaning we had to lineup everyday - is really problematic, especially since the person doing the booking is only there part of the day. With computerized reservations, this should not be necessary. The Italian restaurant was excellent. The Mexican restaurant was ho-hum – trying too hard to be gourmet. We abandoned the Seafood restaurant when we saw the descriptions in the menu and went down to the buffet and had a good seafood meal - disappointing. Now the significant question; would we go back? Yes, we would, though it would have to be again a reasonably priced package. The problem is not the Barcelo, it is the beach. Given our choice, we are now clear that we would prefer to stay at a resort on the Caribbean rather than the Pacific. There is nothing the resort can do about that.

    “Solid Value Holiday”

Traveller Profile: I am in my 60’s, travel with my wife and my main interests when travelling are: photography, good food, finding natural flora and fauna, local history and meeting new people. I prefer locations with interesting sights and activities that are within walking distance of my resort. I avoid resorts that are party and/or drinking oriented. Sunwing Vactions I booked my holiday through Sunwing Vacations so will include an overview of their service as it is a part of the total experience. Reservations: Reservations were accurate, documents delivered by email in a timely manner with accurate information. We ordered meals in advance and they were delivered promptly on the plane as ordered. I did have one small issue in that I tried to order an extra snack and it bumped a meal I previously selected and I was unable to make any changes to my order completing the original transaction. Schedule: We booked our holiday approximately four months in advance. Approximately one month out our flights were re-scheduled to later flights for both departure and return. The later flights were less convenient for us and cost us an extra day of dog-boarding for our two dogs. Check-in: We booked the Elite Plus package, check-in was fast and easy for both legs. Although not as nice as Air-Transat’s “Club Class” or Air Canada’s upgrade having priority check-in, more leg room and an increased baggage allowance is worth it to me. Resort Representative: Oswaldo (”Ozzie”) was the Sunwing representative assigned to the Barcelo Grand Faro. He was generally knowledgeable about the area, different tour options and the resort and provided sound advice about holidaying in the San Jose del Cabo area that was consistent with our previous trips to the region. One thing I found was that the tour representative has quite limited hours at the resort making it difficult to access their services. It also means that if there is a problem with any tour you book it is highly unlikely the Sunwing representative will be available assist you until a later time. Baggage Handling: We had no issues with baggage handling on either the departure or return leg of the trip. Aircraft: The entertainment system was not functioning on the departure flight and the entertainment was poor on the return flight. I recommend bringing your own entertainment. Both aircraft used by Sunwing for our trip were quite old and not as comfortable as newer aircraft used by some carriers. Meals/Service: The service and meals were average on both flights. Nothing to complain about, but nothing notable. Barcelo Gran Faro Check-in/Check-out: Check-in was a bit confusing, we were directed to the main lobby on arrival and after standing in line for approximately 10 minutes we were informed that because we should have gone to a separate check-in reserved for guests who were booked into the Premium Plan. Once we reached the Premium Lounge our check-in proceeded smoothly. The Barcelo uses a magnetic chip that is attached to your wristband for your room key. This is a nice feature as you never have to worry about remembering your key, it is always attached to your wrist. Rooms: We were booked into room 1607 in the main building. It is located on the 6th floor with an excellent view of the pool, beach and the ocean. The room is spacious with a small balcony that has a small drink table and 2 chairs. The room furniture was in good condition and serviceable. When we first arrived, the mini refrigerator was not working well but the next morning it was replaced without me having to mention it to anyone. Instead of a sofa there was one chair on the wall facing the television that was not suitable for two people. As a result, the only real option for watching television was to lay on the bed. The bathroom was equipped with a separate jetted tub and shower enclosure, and a twin sink vanity. Most of the time there was a reasonable amount of hot water available with acceptable if not great water pressure. On day 5 there was a 2-3-hour water outage. When water service resumed there was a high level of discoloration and silt in the water that had to be cleared for the remainder of our stay before we could shower, bath or wash our faces. It was improving with use so I expect the water service will have returned to normal within a couple days. The resort responded quickly to the water problem and it had a minimal impact on our stay. Food: Meal service was pretty good for most meals. The Italian Restaurant was mediocre at best, I preferred most of the meals in the buffet to the Italian Restaurant. Overall the Italian Restaurant was unmemorable for either the quality of food or service. The Seafood Restaurant was more enjoyable with both better food and better service than the Italian Restaurant. For the quality of food, the Mexican Restaurant was my favorite, every item I ordered or sampled was well-prepared and tasty. However, the Mexican Restaurant also had the worst service I received during my stay. I am not sure why, but every aspect of the service was excessively slow and not particularly friendly. We were there more two hours and left before receiving the last item I ordered because it was uncomfortable to sit any longer. The food was more consistent in the buffet and the service was generally friendly with prompt service. There were several obviously new staff who appeared confused and unorganized who seemed to have been left to learn the ropes on their own without much guidance. For breakfast there was often a backup at the egg station, on the busiest days they could have used a second station. The pool grill was quite good, but it was difficult to get a shaded seat at this outdoor venue. I had two hamburgers while staying at Barcelo, both were tasty, but under-cooked, one had pure raw meat in the centre, so it is prudent to check how well cooked your burger is before eating it. Housekeeping: Housekeeping was uniformly good. The room was always clean, and we received a good supply of fresh towels, the mini fridge was refreshed promptly, and the housekeeping staff were friendly and learned out routine quite quickly. On past trips to Mexico we have been treated to some fanciful towel art in our rooms but did not see any on this trip and I kind of missed it. Facilities: The Barcelo has an excellent gym facility for a resort that was well used throughout our stay. There were doing some maintenance and upgrades were in progress during our stay but were coordinated to have a minimal impact on the facility. There was a major renovation underway in the landing area leading from the main building to the pool area, but the renovation did not interfere with access to any of the facilities. Premium Lounge: The premium lounge was the highlight of the resort. It was very hot for most of our stay and the premium lounge was always the coolest room on the resort, had the coldest drinks and had a better selection of liquor than the other venues. It also has a nice coffee/cappuccino machine that is easy to use. Staff (Service/Attitude): Similar to most resorts I have been to there was a range of service and after a few days we gravitated to some of the staff who we hit it off with the most. I do not speak Spanish and often that the language barrier was the main impediment to getting consistent service from everyone. That is more an issue with me than with the Barcelo. Beach: I love the beach near the Barcelo Gran Faro, it is wide, the sand is smooth, and, in the evening, I can often get some interesting photographs with reflections on the wet sand. One caveat for beach goers is this area has strong undertow currents making the ocean unsuitable for swimming or small children. There are some large breakers coming into the shore and if you walk close to the water you are almost sure to get an unexpected drenching. Several times I saw dead blowfish on the beach that had been washed ashore by strong waves. A major improvement from previous trips is the beach was always very clean. Estuary: One of the reasons I like this area is the estuary/nature conservation area located at the end of the resort row near the Holiday Inn Resort. If you like to see some of the areas birdlife this is a great area to explore and is within easy walking distance of the Barcelo. On this trip I saw Black-crowned Night Herons, Great Blue Herons, Reddish Egrets, Great White Egrets, Snowy Egrets, and a few birds I have not identified yet. The estuary has changed quite a bit over the past few years as a result of the water flow changing paths, but it is still a great place for birders to explore. San Jose del Cabo: The downtown area has a great selection of shops and a host of cultural photographic opportunities for shutterbugs. It is a 40 to 45-minute walk means it is possible to walk there, explore for a while and walk back to the resort but, you will have to allow at least 3 to 4 hours if you plan to walk. A cab ride to the downtown area is $7 US and the municipal bus is approximately $1. If you make only one trip into San Jose del Cabo plan for Thursday evening to catch the Art Walk and allow yourself at least two hours to explore the town and displays. Nearby Amenities: There is a pretty good selection of stores and restaurants within a 3 to 5-block radius of the Barcelo with a department store, several pharmacies, souvenir shops, and clothing shops. Prices vary quite a bit with some merchants willing to barter and others who don’t. The most unique t-shirts we found for our granddaughters were at Mr. Buho. The store was fairly expensive but had some really nice items we didn’t find in any other stores. Hurricane Lorena Impact: While I was staying at Barcelo Gran Faro Hurricane Lorena was forecast to hit shore in our area. The Barcelo set up their evacuation center, installed hurricane shutters and took down everything likely to come loose or become a hazard in high wind conditions. This resulted in a one-day reduction in services available. Throughout the hurricane watch the resort provided continuous updates via written notices delivered to the rooms in Spanish and English. Staff members also regularly approached guests in the public areas to ensure they had received the most recent update. We were fortunate that Hurricane Lorena changed course and did not make landfall in our area. Throughout the hurricane warning I was confident the Barcelo was taking the appropriate actions and that I would be safe and well cared for. Side Note: I have a MA in Disaster and Emergency Management and have more than 35 years experience in working in emergency management so am able to recognize the difference between well-prepared and partially prepared. Final Thoughts: The Barcelo Grand Faro is a good value holiday. The rooms are comfortable and clean, the service is solid, and the amenities/food are as good as any in this price range. I took this holiday during the shoulder season and I expect most of the renovations underway now will be completed before the high season. If you want a value holiday Barcelo Gran Faro is a good choice.

    “Great Los Cabos experience”

We stayed for a week (mid-September), and really enjoyed it. The staff were all friendly, the place was fairly clean. Unfortunately, there was a bit of construction/renos going on, but I guess that's to be expected in shoulder season, before the busy time (beginning Oct/Nov, probably through February-ish). We had a bit of a scare with Hurricane Lorena, and the staff was extremely cautious, quarantining everybody in a couple large rooms in their convention centre for a while. Understandable though, as I think they got hit hard a few years ago, so were acting a bit overly cautious this time. It passed by in 4 - 5 hours, and we were able to go back to our rooms. The food was very good, the drinks too. It doesn't have many amenities for kids, so if you have toddlers, probably should consider a different resort. The location is about a 10 minute walk (felt very safe) from the centre of San José del Cabo, and it's worth doing the walk at least once while you're there. Would recommend the place to friends, and we hope to go again.

    “Ok for the price”

This was my second time staying at this resort, I really enjoyed it the first time but this second time, not so much. The service seemed to be really lacking and some employees almost seemed irritated if you asked them for something. The rooms were not that great, our toilet barely worked. We even splurged on the beach front premium level and it wasnt worth it compared to other resorts we have visited in Cabo. The maid service was a joke. I had 5 people total in my group with 3 rooms and we all had issues getting towels for some reason. It was so bad we just stopped letting them clean our room and tried to catch the maid in the hall to get towels from their cart because if they cleaned the room they took the dirty towels but didnt leave any new clean ones. Entertainment was ok food was ok. If you go with low expectations you may enjoy this resort but it is definitely not up to par with other resorts in Cabo. For the price it's ok but a 2 or 3 star rating at best. I won't be returning.
