    “Stolen phone, otherwise decent trip.”

I have mixed feelings about my vacation at Allegro Cozumel last week (April 14th-21st 2017). Mine as well as 6 other people's phones were stolen in the week I was there on vacation. At least two other people I met there had their phones taken from their bedside table while they were asleep beside them. This was quite disturbing of an experience for all of us. My phone was stolen on day/night 2 of my trip which was not only a damper on the rest of the week but also caused me to have trouble sleeping at night wondering if any strangers were lurking in the corners of my room. While I was of course upset about my phone being stolen, my main concerns were a question of my safety. There were times where I was sleeping alone in my room and to think of what they could have done to me makes me shiver. We actually felt the need to set up booby traps to ensure there would be a loud noise if someone tried to enter. On a later day in the trip we had also noticed a chair that was placed in front of the glass sliding door had been moved aside. Therefore our room had been broken into not once but (at least) twice. After closer inspection it was easy to see that our glass sliding door was easily unlocked from the outside because you could open it enough to unlatch the lock. While I had to replace my phone (and case, screen protector and $75 SD memory card) the day after my trip, there is no replacing the thousands of pictures and notes I had saved on there. Had I been the only one to have my phone stolen I may have put the blame on myself for not being careful enough with my belongings, but I would think that when my doors are locked and my phone is plugged in beside me I had been careful enough. It is something I wish I would have known myself before going so that I could have A) changed resorts or B) left my phone locked up in the safe for the duration of the trip. (One of the safes in my friend's room didn't even work which was never fixed so they had to use ours.) That being said, I generally did enjoy the resort. The beach was not the best. The sand wasn't as groomed as I have seen in other places. The volume of the music didn't bother me but the music they were playing was repetitive and I personally don't care to hear the Grease soundtrack once, let alone daily. The pools were nice and clean. The chairs were comfy and they had umbrellas set up to escape the sun. The poolbar was not very well staffed as the bartenders were alternating between that and the lunch bar. The landscaping was beautifully groomed. Lots of flowers and beautiful grass. I appreciated the small size of the resort, everything was nearby. Some staff were friendly and others didn't seem to enjoy serving guests. I would like to highlight two people who were amazing, first was Emilio, the sunwing excursion rep. He was very helpful and friendly. Always gave a nice smile and a wave when we walked past his office. The other was Abraham, a bartender at the sports bar and disco. He always welcomed us with a hug and a smile and made great drinks. He was quick and hard working. So thanks goes to both of them for contributing to a fun experience! The food was ok. I enjoyed the breakfast quite a bit and the lady at the omelette station was great! I would highly recommend all of the a-la-cartes dinners. The food was delicious and the entertainment of the oriental dinner was amazing (blanking on the chef's name). While I don't like spending time on vacation on my phone, I do appreciate being able to check in every once in a while. Unfortunately the wifi at the hotel was very expensive and well, after two days I didn't have a phone to connect with anyways. But free wifi at least in the lobby would have been greatly appreciated. So long story short, decent resort experience but keep your valuables, especially phones locked in the safe!

    “Another Great Stay”

This was I and my wifes 4th stay at Allegro. Everyone is so nice as usual. Check in was fast, front desk was helpful, bellman had our bags to our room quick. Stayed in room 6522, same room we had before. Room had been remodeled in the last year since Barceló took over. Most notable were new sink and counter, new tile in bathroom and shower, fresh paint and new ac unit. Very nice updates. Never used the pools as we love the beach area. The beach area has also been updated, more coconut trees for shade and more loungers and tables than before. They have 4 rows of loungers now instead of 3 and never had a problem finding a place to relax. Also this year servers came around for drink orders instead of having to go to the bar. This year we did not try to make reservations at the specialty restaurants. We had a rental car and were able to go into town when we felt like it. That being said we like the buffets at Allegro. Breakfast is always good, usually getting made to order omelets, fruit and usually bacon or sausage. Lunch buffet is hit or miss because it busy, and may have to wait on food if they have ran out. New at lunch was a outside grill with burgers, hotdogs etc... Dinner buffet has regional theme nights serving different types of fish, beef or pork and pasta station. Salad bar, sides and desserts all have there own areas so you go from place to place to fill your plate. Always found something good to eat, but some theme nights are better than others. The grounds/landscaping at Allegro is impressive. Plants always in bloom, trees and grass well manicured. We enjoy just walking the resort after returning from lobby/dinner buffet, maybe seeing a iguana or too. Since it was our 4th visit we recognize several of the employees. All employees are super nice and helpful. I'm not good with names so I wont try but heres a shoutout: Front desk made check in/checkout a breeze. Stopped by lobby daily to talk and get activities sheet. Waiters/ bartenders get you seated quickly at restaurants, mix your drinks and generally take good care of you. After a day or so they remember what you like. Guest services and activities people keep fun and games going by the pool and beach all day. We walk by the evening shows but did not participate, but look fun. I don't use the dive shop but a couple of their guys took me out on a hobie cat for sailing. I don't know how to sail and they had some free time so off we went. So much fun. Last the housekeepers took good care of our needs. Room is always clean, fridge restocked daily with water beer and pop. Towel animals on bed. Very nice touches. One nice thing the resort has is a washer and dryer. Halfway thru our stay we do our laundry in the evening allowing us to pack light. Allegro is perfect size for us, easy to get around the resort, nice beach, nice people. That's why we keep coming back.

    “Family trip”

We were at Allegro Cozumel from Apr.14 to Apr.21. We really liked the grounds. Well maintained, clean and really nice to look around. We loved the location, and the fact that we were not in the city, and that the next door resort was about 1 km away. We got 2 adjoing rooms in villa 45. Olivia was our cleaning lady. She did excellent job cleaning our rooms and as an artist, creating beautiful towel compositions👌 The food was as it was in the other resorts we have stayed before. I am vegetarian, so it's my son. Every day we were able to find something to eat. We just needed to add some of the hot sauces or sometimes more salt or pepper to make it taste good. Before coming here I have read all the reviews for the last 2 months. I didn't have high expectations because it is a 4 stars AI resort, and the food in the main buffet must've been made the way that all can eat it  as it is or add some of the spices provided on site. If it would be made according to you, other people may not like it. My daughter eats meat and fish and she also liked what she put on her plates. We cook a lot at home, from scratch,at the same time we had realistic expectations regarding the buffet. There are 3 a'la cart restaurants, and in all our request to have vegetarian/ vegan meals were met. In the Oriental for example the fried rice and veggies were put on our plates before the cook started to grill meat on the same grill. The restaurant by the pools is open between 12 and 5 pm for lunch, beside a BBQ also near the pools. I think this is a good idea to serve the lunch in a buffet form at the restaurant which is the nearest to the beach and pools. There were sometimes a line ups to the breakfast restaurant, until they opened the other part of the restaurant which at evening  is used as the Italian a'la cart (the wall is moveable). It solved the morning customers traffic jam. The beach was nice, a few fishes, but not a lot, there is small coral reef right of the life guard tower. We went on a discover scuba diving trip with a local company, not through the resort. The diving shop in the resort is very expensive, even with they 10%off if you will book it on line. Do you own research. Alberto picked us up from the pier at our resort on the time which we agreed before. Took us to a shallow area first, to teach us what we needed to know for the first time diving and after that we went to 2 coral reefs. It was really a nice experience. Until this time we only snorkeled. But there were a few things I didn't like here. I spoke to the resort menager , regarding those issues.  Some of those I think and he agreed are easy to fix , some to be fixed the upper management must be involved. The first one is lack of umbrellas/ palapas on the beach. There is hardly a shade. There are a palm trees but they don't provide enough shade. There are a few new umbrellas around the pools, but personally I am not a pool person, if I go south, I go for the beach, and  sea or ocean water. The other issue was the music on the beach. There was no escape from it. Once my request to lower the music was met, the second one was just ignored with a "smile". After hours of being bombarded with the music on the beach the resort  plays music from hidden speakers along the sidewalk close to the bungalows/villas on the right side when facing the water/Peninsula. I specifically requested to accommodate us far  away from the entertainment noises, and yes I was not to close to the theatre or disco, but I didn't have the idea of the hidden speakers. I guess it is nice to walk for you dinner with the background music but it should be on the quiet side and not past 9.30. I didn't request to move us somewhere else, but I think that was an option. The last thing I didn't like at Allegro was the steep price for the WiFi. It was really expensive $11US for one hour, 21 for a day and $81US for a week!!! Majority resorts on island are offering free WiFi, some time unlimited some time limited. The Barcelo resorts, the same chain as Allegro,  in Mayan Riviera they have 3 hours of free wifi in the lobby, this part it is not up to the resort manager, but up the management on a higher level. I brought a high school student with me, so in order to get her homework we went to a restaurant across the road ,  for 75 pesso she had  a can of Pepsi  and WiFi for 45 min.so she was able to download  her home/resort work😉 The next day for 75 pesso again Pepsi and WiFi to sent her homework. Before I left I spoke to the Menager, and I understand that his power is limited. Generally I think he is running the resort very well and the resort has a big potential because of its location and the grounds. Also I would like to thank to all the people working at Allegro, for their hard work and also remaind the tourist to clean up after yourself, the cups and unfinished food on the beach and your children's dirty diapers. You want to be respected, respect other people too. After 3 days we also rented a car, from a place across the resort, ($80 for a jeep with third party insurance, I had a letter from my Visa that they will cover car rental collision/ loss damage  ) and we went to the city, better prices for souvenirs and hammocks, and we drove around the island with a few stops at different beaches and a local bar called Coconuts, for late lunch. PS. We are already at home. Just 2 hours before boarding the plane my son started to feel not well. Unfortunately the whole flight he spent in the washroom, with upset stomach, vomiting, and direaha, and painful cramps. I started with the same symptoms 1 hour after arriving home. My last meal was also at the resort. I have never experienced such violent set of symptoms. Today I am still in the bed feeling very weak 😟. We both had our  food at the resort, the same food at the Italian a'la cart night before and almost the same selection of raw veggies for the lunch before leaving. I noticed a few things I didn't like regarding food safety. 1. Tongs were newer used when handling lime or mint with our drinks, I saw that at the bars, I saw that at the restaurants when waitresses where grabbing the limes with their hands 2. The plastic cups in which the drinks were served are for sure better for the environment then the disposable cups, but they need to be washed properly, rinsing them  that is not enough!! 3. Utensils shouldn't be put directly on the place mats which are used by many people 3. Please put signs at the buffet restaurants in 2 languages, not to touch food with hands, to use the spoons or tongs provided. On our last day we saw 2 individuals taking the soft tortillas and putting them back, yack. When dealing with big number of people the food touching shouldn't be allowed. 4.  There is a Purell  station before entering each restaurant, but I think that way it is voluntary, make it "mandatory" to use it. Previously I was at resorts in Dominican Republic and Cuba where the hostes were holding a bottle of hand sanitizer  and putting it on your hands, I think this is better idea, People have different standards, I will not comment on that.

    “Not as expected!”

We arrived at the resort for one week April 11th. We were looking for a relaxing week and thought we would try Mexico for a second time. we have traveled to many locations in the past but only to Mexico once previously - Pacific side. The Good: Short trip from airport to resort! Snorkeling excursion booked through Air Canada rep was a once in a lifetime experience and we have snorkeled at many Caribbean locations. Room was nice and different with a thatched roof(we have never experienced that before). The Bad: The beach had lots of seaweed which was unexpected. I was stung by a jellyfish the very first time I went in and saw several other jellyfish over the course of the week but was more cautious after my first exposure. The food- Awful other than the odd item. We struggled trying to find things that were edible let alone safe to eat. Food safety is lacking- food was not hot or cold most of the time. Birds were in the snack bar and the buffet eating out of food containers. There was NO cleaning being done- trust me when I say that brushing off the crumbs between guests is not adequate to prevent transmission of bacteria. Bars did not open till 10 and then the pool bar closed at 5pm. After ten pm the only option was the lobby area and there was not adequate seating etc to accommodate guests. The Ugly: You are bombarded when you arrive by salespeople and have to find your way to the rep to get your shuttle. This continues at the resort too as they wear the same shirts and you have no idea who to speak to. You have to wait till 3 pm to access room- are you kidding me. Most of our plane had been up since 3-4am and we arrive at noon and are told to come back at 3 pm. You are greeted with virgin rum punch- How about giving guests a choice as a little rum would have made the wait seem more reasonable. The day passes that are sold to locals to come onto the resort for a day from 9-5 is absolutely deplorable. They took over the adult pool(with their kids) and the area and the pool became a toxic wasteland of murk, garbage, kids, etc. I had to speak to staff to clean up the area and the pool! If you let them in be prepared to at least take care of the increased volumes of traffic and utilization. I caution you on this practice as most of your vacation guests were not impressed and felt that they were not the priority for this resort. My husband and I were sick with after about three days at this resort and that continued for the remainder of the vacation. I've been home now for three days and I'm still not over the diarrhea. We will never return to this resort again!!! I caution people on booking this resort. We went with lower expectations and even that was not reached.

Dear Horseshoelakers, There seems to have been a number of deficiencies encountered which are very atypical and not reflective of our brand experience; if this stay was marred by irregular circumstances, we can only renew our apologies and assure you that we have in the meantime briefed the team at great length of your comments. We are working on a daily basis to exceed our guest’s expectations and we appreciate the time you took to share your concerns, and it is our hope that you will give us the opportunity to better serve you in the future.

Best Regards! Monica P, Guest Experience Manager Allegro Cozumel
