“Wonderful place, superb service, quiet relaxation”

The Royal Hideaway Playacar (RHP) was a great place to relax. We were newcomers to this resort and went on the advice of my sister and her husband. Our group stayed 8 days and consisted of 3 couples (my wife and I, my sister and her husband, and my parents). Overall we were not disappointed. The staff at RHP is second to none. I'd list the names of all who treated us so well but it would be very long. Daniel and John by the pool and on the beach stood out as truly exceptional for us. Here are my comments by category: Rooms Our rooms were clean and spacious. The sliding door did not lock but we were on the second floor so it was not a big deal. If you have trouble with stairs get a room on the 1st floor. There are no elevators in the buildings with the rooms that I saw. The balconies were very nice to relax on. The king bed must be a California king. Very wide but a little short for me at 6'3". We loved the mattresses. The refrigerators do not cool well as is noted elsewhere on this site. The problem is that they are totally enclosed in a piece of furniture and have zero air circulation. If you leave the cabinet door open it will cool. The solution to this is to cut a hole in the furniture top and bottom somewhere hidden to get some air moving in there. The water temp is not well controlled and goes hot and cool. Be careful but this was not a big deal for us. Each room had a safe and it worked well for all of us. It held a lot of stuff but I'm not sure it would hold a laptop. Concierge Our 3 couples all shared a concierge. She was nice and "managed" to get us the dinner reservations we wanted. I will say though that at times she was less than helpful and a little rude although she always apologized later. Dinner reservations apparently are always a little difficult here from what I see online. We were told it would be difficult to get our early (6 pm) dinner reservations but we stood our ground and got what we wanted for the most part. The funny thing is that when we went to dinner at 6 we usually were the only ones there or maybe one of 2 or 3 other groups. Not crowded at all. Are they simply trying to garner more tips for their efforts? Not sure. This just serves to frustrate patrons and needs to be addressed. Dining Oh my. I've never eaten so well in my life. Dinners were great. We went to each of the restaurants (Spices, The Grill, Las Ventanas, Palazzo, Azia) at least once and they were all very good. Azia can be quite the show if you dine at the Teppanyaki grill or in one of the enclosed rooms in the back where you remove your shoes and appear to sit on the floor (really just a table sunken into the floor). Pretty cool. Each dinner took upwards of 2.5 hours for the six of us. Beautiful presentation. They do enforce the dress code so make sure you have at least collared polo shirts, nice pants and dress shoes. No jeans. I'd bring at least one nice button down shirt. Breakfast was adjacent to the beach at the buffet downstairs (The Grill) or a fancier "order from a menu" meal upstairs (Spices). Both come with attentive wait staff and good food. Some of the menu items can be ordered downstairs if the rest of your party wants the buffet. Lunch was also adjacent to the beach downstairs or upstairs. Both require ordering from a menu. There is a decent salad bar with great guacamole and chips. Bar We found the bar to be very good. Top shelf liquor if you want and talented bartenders. If you order a drink that they don't know make sure you come prepared to tell them how to make it. Golden Margaritas - yum! Entertainment This is a quiet resort. Do not expect wild parties and lots of noise like the surrounding resorts. The Bar Alegria has something going on around 10 pm each night it seemed. Sometimes there is a performance of some sort by the pools in the afternoon. Pool & beach The pools are nice and were clean. They overlook the beach and are a great place to spend the day. Confirming what others have said, the problem is that people stake claims to their lounge chairs in the middle of the night with books or other stuff and then do not show up until noon. To get chairs by the pool we had to show up early. We arrived around 6 am some mornings The upside is that this is a heck of a place to watch the sun rise. There are plenty of lounge chairs on the beach each with a little awning covering 2 chairs. There are several hot tubs and while we were there not all of them were working. The large one by the upper pool was a great gathering place for up to 20 people. We had a bit of rain and this was a fun place to make friends (and try new drinks!) There is usually someone walking around checking your drink so we rarely had to venture to the bar. They have a lunch menu for around the pool. It was nice not to have to worry about drying off to eat. Activities Over the course of our 8 days our group participated in: Water aerobics with John - "So sexy!" Biking around the area with John. Bikes are free at RHP and this is a great way to see the town and some of the local archeological sites. Kayaking out in the Carribean. Kayaks are free. Hobie Cat sailing. If you know what you are doing you can take these out with no guide. It's free but you probably have to pay for the guide - not sure. Snorkeling - to get to any snorkel area you need to pay for a snorkel tour. High Tea - this was a relaxing way to spend part of the afternoon. No dress code. Tipping This is a very confusing aspect of these "all inclusive" resorts. Tip, don't tip. There is no right or wrong answer. The staff at RHP are professionals so it is my belief that they're going to treat you well no matter what you tip. After researching online and giving it some thought I decided that we should tip as follows: One or two drinks brought to us - $1 American (or about 19 pesos at today's rates) Lunch brought to us at the pool or beach - $2 American Dinner - this was a production and very nice experience - per couple we tipped $20 to $25 American at each dinner Breakfast - $5 American per couple Housekeeping - Rooms are cleaned twice a day - we tipped $2 or $3 American each time. When I entered the room when they were there they really were cleaning. Maybe a bit overdone but I guess this is expected at a higher end resort. We also put a dollar in the refrigerator if we needed it restocked each day. Concierge - we tipped her $20 American when we made all of our reservations. Probably too much in retrospect. When we asked to have my parents room moved to the first floor we tipped a bit more because this was a hassle for her. Baggage handlers - we tipped a couple dollars American per bag. Guided bike rides - we tipped a couple dollars or more American per person. Other staff - hailing a taxi - $1 American Language issues We speak English with very little useful Spanish. We had no trouble at all here at RHP. We found most of the staff we interacted with spoke excellent English and for those that didn't we resorted to sign language and Google's English to Spanish translator. Area I felt very safe walking around the area outside of RHP and when shopping on 5th Avenue. Shopping For some shopping close by you can go across the street and find souvenirs and a couple of stores for incidentals. Otherwise go to 5th Avenue. There is everything from large stores (Old Navy, Krispy Kreme, etc.) to small stalls and people selling their handmade wares on the street. Bargain! Do not pay full price for souvenirs. We had a great time playing this game and I'm sure still overpaid. My wife got one vendor to drop his price for a pretty silver ring from over $300 American to $85. I'm sure he would have gone further but we decided it just wasn't something she would wear. To get to 5th Avenue ask the bellhop for a taxi. Presently it's 90 pesos to get there and there are plenty of places to catch a taxi back to RHP. Water None of us had any problems with the water. We did eat salads and had ice in our drinks. We were cautious though and only drank and brushed our teeth with bottled water. Wi-Fi They have wi-fi here but we found it to be intermittent. Mostly it worked but it seemed to drop out frequently. Overall While parts of the property are dated and need work (the "river" flowing through the property and some of the rooms) we still loved this place for the people, food, beauty and quiet environment. Give it a try.

    “Best Customer Service & Treatment”

I was upgraded to this hotel and had the pleasure of staying 3 days. Not long enough. I'm so grateful our good friend Malvina chose to marry her groom here. There were several people who politely took the utmost care of my wife and I especially accommodating us with the same rate and great service after my wife's wallet with her passport, driver license, & cards were stolen. I can't speak for others who have possibly had bad or not up to par visits here. I'm an amateur international traveler but I can say that the employers of this hotel treated us as royalty. I must name Reuben who serves at the grill, Sergio Legorreta the guest experience manager, Enrique our Lobby Concierge, and Rene Ramirez the general division manager. There are more whose names I don't recall but they were amazing. Thank you for the wonderful experience. I highly recommend Royal Hideway and do plan to visit again and look for the hidden perks we began to discover on our last day there.

    “Beautiful views and delicious foods!”

Found this all inclusive resort by chance - spent 4 nights here back in Fall of 2016. We loved it. Got picked up in a private car from the Cancun airport that took us straight to the resort (and on departure drove us back to the airport). You get a personal butler who already made us nightly dinner reservations at the various restaurants on the resort. Every meal we had here was amazing and delicious, compared to other resorts we've been to. Everything was prepared fresh and made to order. The beach was private and not crowded. Bc this is an adult only resort - no children running around. The pools and beach areas were quiet and relaxing. Many options for lounging - by the pool and on the beach, shaded and not shaded. The rooms were large and comfortable. Very clean and made up daily with a nightly turn down service. Often we walked into the room to fresh fruit or champagne or a nice note from our butler. Overall, it was a wonderful relaxing stay. Would definitely come again.

“Time has caught up to the Royal Hideaway”

The RH has been our go to place for 15 years on the Mayan Riviera. This was our 1st time since it has been bought out by the Barceló group. The food and service is still the best part of the property. My concierge Joanna was amazing. My wife and I were celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary and I splurged for the best room on the property, The Presidential Suite. I would give it a 8 out of 10. It needs to be more glamorous. Its very vanilla and has no décor. The outdoor tub was fun. They haven't upgraded any of the facilities other than a few pieces of workout equipment in the gym. I would recommend this location to anyone wanting a safe bet. This will be our last visit as I will move on to newer properties with more to offer.
