“Great hotel - but not so great for vegetarians!”

My partner and I stayed here between 16th and 23rd May, booking via Thomson (TUI). Here are my thoughts about the hotel and our stay generally: Good -The hotel is architecturally stunning, built into the side of an old lava flow and situated on a promontory overlooking La Gomera (when it is clear) and the cliffs of Los Gigantes - Beautifully well-maintained gardens and outside pool area (3 pools in total) - Pool bar - great views and drinks are reasonably priced, with a nice chilled vibe (ost of the time) - Decent hotel gym, which was free - Beautiful spa, which cost us 10 Euros each for 90 minutes - well worth the cost (I think for superior rooms & all inclusive, its free) - Unexpectedly received a bottle of pink champagne and a lovely card from the Guest Experience manager - was left in the room for us on the 3rd day - a lovely touch - Received a bottle of Cava for my birthday on 20th, which again, was a lovely touch Not so good - The room was advertised as having a sea view, however when we checked in, we were given a room on the ground floor only to find the view was of a children's slide and a wall with a large green gate, with a glimpse of the sea above. We asked to be moved and had to wait 2 days due to the hotel being full - The food. We were half board and with my partner being vegetarian, had high hopes that the food would be great (based on previous Thomson hotel experiences). The breakfast was fine (nothing stunning, but perfectly adequate), however dinner was another story. In short, my partner ended up with cheese pizza and salad every night, due to there being such a limited amount that he could eat. Most of the hot dishes were not labelled (whereas obvious things like carrots were), and when asking the staff what he could eat, they would invariably point to something that had chicken or fish in. From my perspective, the food was OK, but there were some very strange choices - for example, on one night, there was tagliatelle pasta but no obvious sauce to go with it, another night there was pumpkin but nothing that seemed to go with it. We also saw an abundance of flies in the restaurant, including on occasion, crawling on the food. On two occasions, we had to request an early breakfast due to excursions (as breakfast doesn't start til 8am). I understand that it would be a limited range, but on both occasions, it was extremely poor. Basically, it was a few slices of ham and cheese, mini croissants, watered-down orange juice and coffee from a machine. This took place in the a la carte restaurant opposite the main one, and what was rather surprising was that we could see virtually everything laid out ready in the main restaurant in readiness - would it have been too much for some fruit or yogurt? - TUI rep. Although she fulfilled the function of a rep e.g. the welcome meeting happened, we booked an excursion through her etc, unlike previous experiences of TUI reps, it felt like she was only interested in selling excursions, and that once she had our money, was not interested in us. For example, although we encountered her a few times during the holiday, not once did she ask whether we were having a good holiday, or whether there was anything she could do for us etc. I should mention that when we first arrived at the hotel, she was there to greet us, but looking back, it felt very disingenuous, like she was gong through the motions. Tips - If you want a boat trip to see whales & dolphins, I have 2 recommendations. The local option is in Los Gigantes (about 20 minutes walk from the hotel, although a little hilly) and book the "Masca Express", which goes from the harbour. It costs 15 Euros per person for 2 hours, the boats hold around 35 people (when we went, it was only half full so plenty of room), and we saw plenty of dolphins. The second recommendation is going to Los Cristianos and book "Travelling Lady", which goes from the port. It costs 20 Euros per person for 2 hours, the boat holds around 35 people (when we went, it was three quarter full so plenty of room), and we saw pilot whales, dolphins and a turtle! - Local buses are a cost-effective way to get down the west coast to Las Americas/Los Cristianos/Adeje - number 477 runs every 40 minutes (bus stop is about 10 minutes walk up a hill), and costs 8 Euros 40 return, and takes about an hour - To stock up on supplies, there are a couple of supermarkets within 2 minutes walk of the hotel which are both on the pricey side, so would recommend a 10 minute walk up the hill to Lidl for better value and choice - There is a cashpoint if you turn right out of the hotel, on the side of one of the above mentioned supermarkets, which is free - apparantly there is 1 in the hotel which charges 4 Euros to make a transaction! - Cappuccino Maria is a lovely cafe next to the hotel (out the hotel, turn right and down the steps to the promenade and it is on the left corner), very good quality smoothies and a lovely view too So overall, we had a lovely holiday, but will probably not stay here again.

“FANTASTIC HOLIDAY GOOD HOTEL AMAZING VIEWS BUT.........”

This was our first visit to the hotel, and we had a great 11 night stay. Nice friendly staff, and we met some lovely people. Beautiful area with enough bars and restaurants to suit most peoples tastes. The balconies and pool area offered the most amazing views, however, our stay was marred by a few niggles. As other guests have said, the rooms are a little tired and could do with a refurb, but this was not an issue, and the beds were extremely comfortable. Apart from breakfast, the food was disgusting, rarely was there any veg, and when there was it was stone cold. Meat from the grill was usually so chewy it was like cardboard, and one day the chicken strips were pink inside, and when I complained to the waiter, he just shook his head and whipped my plate away. I can honestly say we didn't enjoy one meal in the hotel whilst there, and being half board were reluctant to eat out, though we did so on at least 4 occasions, and found some lovely restaurants in both Los Gigantes and Puerto Santiago where the food was delicious. The " fridge" in our room was simply unfit for purpose, and a breeding ground for ants and cockroaches. When you opened the door, you were hit by a blast of hot air and dozens of ants, but when I first raised the issue with reception, I was told, " well it really is a minibar, and only meant to keep drinks cool ". Well, it didn't ! We may as well have kept our drinks in a store cupboard. We spoke to our Thomson rep, Kelly, whom spoke on our behalf twice to them, and in all, between us the matter was reported 6 times, and nothing was done. Several others we spoke to had the same problem and nothing was resolved. Shame on the hotel, not good enough, particularly as some other guests told us their fridges were in perfect working order and kept their drinks cold. Forgive me for dwelling on this, but this did spoil things for us, as we spend a good deal of time on the balcony and like to enjoy a lovely cold drink. So if the hotel is supplying a fridge, at least ensure it is functional, and don't try to insult our intelligence with senseless explanations or excuses. Regarding the towels, we accept having to pay a 12 euros deposit, but never before have we had to pay 2 euros every time you need to change them. In all, we did enjoy our holiday. Would we go back ? Definitely to the area and possibly to this hotel, as I think the good outweighs the bad, but would only go on bed and breakfast basis, and if the price was right.

    “Super Stay”

It was our first visit to Tenerife (we've visited Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura before) and we wanted to be away from very busy resorts so chose Barcelo Santiago. Reading other reviews I'm astonished some were unhappy as the welcome and level of service was really excellent, we found. We had booked a Thompson holiday and our rep. Kellie was so lovely and extremely efficient (not that we needed to see her after booking trips.) We like to walk, explore, go on trips, read quietly, swim and we could do all that. If we'd wanted to sunbathe all the time there was plenty of space and lots of activities if you wished. We went half board and was delighted with the quality of the food and the service. we visited the bars and restaurants 15 mins walk away at the marina for lunches if we wanted and had a very special meal at La Pergola (on the seafront down to the left of the hotel) can't praise the food or the location enough. The bar next to it also became our 'go to' spot for drinks at sunset, very friendly young staff who really made time for you. The rooms were spotless (we had a delux room on the 7th floor) it was quiet for sleeping and the views were amazing - with good binoculars you can follow the boats and see dolphins from your balcony although you can't beat the 'Rapido' inflatable boat trip (1 hr 15 euros per person) really fast, exciting and informative and we got so close to the dolphins; a 'must for anyone who worries they will feel queezy on the longer, more 'relaxed' boat trips. Changing dinner for lunch wasn't a problem, an extended checkout was easily arranged (23 euros I think but no time limit) and the complimentary spar sessions were very welcome, (we were the only ones in the spar when we went at 1.30 to escape from the sun for a bit). The Teide by night trip is fantastic, the meal surprised everyone, the stars were amazing and the friendly drink stops were lovely, really worth the price (68 euros each I think) we were out about 11 hours. For us a week was perfect and there was a mix of all ages with the surroundings retaining a real charm that looked to be missing in other areas where there were pick-ups to/from the airport. Great hotel-can't fault it, lovely holiday!

Perfektní hotel v klidné zóně. Jedinou vadou je nedostatek parkovacích míst v rámci hotelových služeb. Recepce OK. Vynikající kuchyně - rozmanitost jídla a obsluha.
