    “Super Comfy Bed!”

    I know, I know, who talks about comfy beds instead of golden sands being caressed by the perfect-temperature waters of the Caribbean Sea? That would be me. Try as I might I always wake up before 6:00 am, but with the magical mattress in our room, my wife and I were able to sleep until noon. I hadn't felt so well rested and energized in ages. Enough said about the horizontal paradise we fell in love with. Our room was very roomy, clean and with lots of natural lighting. My wife loved the bathroom, spacious balcony and how well insulated against noise our room was. All the staff was super nice and would go out of their way to make us feel right at home. The breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet was amazing! I counted 4 pools and 4 bars, so you're always really close to either one of them. They got plenty of activities throughout the hotel: archery, kid's club, banana boat, etc. Excursions that will take you outside of the hotel are also available. Mosquitoes were one of my biggest concern when booking this hotel, but I gotta tell you, they got that under control, because not once were we bothered by those pesky insects. There's no free wifi anywhere in the resort grounds, so asking your phone company to set you up with an international plan might be a good idea. Last but not least, the daily shows that take place at night are very entertaining and there's a disco called "Mangú" (Dominican dish made of mashed green plantains) that opens at 11:00 pm. Enjoy!

    “Needs a lot of Improvements”

    So our family got together for a little Rest and Relaxation and we chose Occidental because my family is from the DR and my Aunt & Uncle often stay a hotels at least once a month. They stood here before it was taken over by Barcelo. Our trip included 12 people as we approach to check in on 8//6/18 since we were occupying 4 rooms we had to check in, in the groups of people staying in each room. Each person had to fill out some paper, which consisted of the name and address and passport or cedula # for each person in the room. I have stayed at hotels around the world before and never had to do this. This took us about 30-40 min since there were so many of us we were hot and just wanted to get to our rooms to change and jump in the pool. We decided to go eat first then get the bell boy so they can take us to our rooms with the corresponding suitcases this took probably another 20min for everyone to get their bags and get situated. We get to our rooms which all in all were nice and comfy and spacious we booked rooms with 3-4 people per room 4 was the max with double beds. Once we get in they have these sofas which had a blanket on and were comfortable enough for a person to sleep on. Which makes me think that they limit the room to 4 people so that you have to book another room which sucks. Like I said before the rooms had 3-4 people and there were only 2 beach towels in each room and only 2 bath towels per room as well. If they know 3-4 people were going to be in a room why not put the extra towels so we don't have to call front desk and ask for something that should of been noted. We change and head to the pool, obviously we head to the pool bar so we can get drinks, we see the bartender who was alone and there must of been at least 8-9 people waiting for drinks. We finally get our chance to order and we start ordering up for our group of 12 we order several different mixed drinks and walk towards our group and take our first sip and it was nasty. I do take into consideration that the bartender was alone and probably overwhelmed but those mixed drinks were inedible we toss them all out and head back to the bar to get beers because we know you cant mess that up. We get our beers and head back to the extremely warm pool and enjoy ourselves. The restaurants were subpar the food was not all that great, the buffet had a variety of food for breakfast lunch and dinner which i thought was great. But the Italian restaurant was just ok, the menu shows you the meat you can pick but does not note what kind of pasta that comes with your dish. I ordered the Chicken Parmesan assuming it would come with pasta with Marinara sauce but it came with past with pesto sauce. Needless to say i left hungry and went to the buffet. After we watched the Show for the night which was titled Vegas and was really good. We headed back to our rooms only to find 2 of the 3 rooms were leaking water from the light fixture and although we stood for 2 nights 3 days no one came to fix it. The beach was horrible the smell of Algae was horrific and seaweed i did not step foot on the beach. Then checking out was another nightmare, first you have to carry wet pool towels with you to check out. Then their system was down our driver was waiting over 25 minutes waiting for all 12 of us to check out. All in all they really need to make note of people staying in the rooms and leave adequate towels. They need to fix the leaky ceilings in rooms as well as Air Conditioners that were mediocre. My family and I made the best out of our trip, but unfortunately we will not be returning here. We travel frequently and when you work hard for your money and spend it somewhere you expect to enjoy yourself not worry about leaky ceilings.

    “Horrible experience”

    I go on vacation with my family every year and this was our worst resort ever. The ceiling was leaking. Front desk was just horrible. They were slow and nasty. The pool bar was horrific. You have people with no teeth and dirty uniform asking you if you want a massage. My daughter got sick from either the drinks that were being made with unfiltered ice water or the food there. This resort has to fix up the towel situations. No one wants to walk around with a wet towel to get a new one or walk to reception to turn in wet towels before checking out. Also, the beach smelled so bad. It smelled like fish and seaweed. There was seaweed all of the sand and in the water. Just horrific. Will never be going The Occidental in any Caribbean island I continue to travel. I will be sure to tell my friends and family that travel yearly to never stay at this resort. They should refund me my money so I can pay my daughters hospital bill from what the food and drinks here caused her.

    “Don’t get a massage!”

    The overall experience was good. Food was ok with variety everyday. I would recommend the resort for a family. I don’t recommend the spa. I received a massage, girl didn’t know what a relaxing massage was. Daughter got a mani pedi . Both not worth the money.

    “Definitely not going back”

    This is not a 5 start hotel. Very dirty place. Rooms smell very bad, all dusty, hairs on floor, no clean towels, sheets with stains. Restaurants served same food as in the buffet. Buffet food was cold, no variety, no quality. Plates, forks, spoon were dirty. Table covers dirty. Staff friendly but not attentive and very forgetful. No hot water and no towel in the room is almost an every day issue. I had to go and buy stuff to clean my bath myself. The pond is full of mosquito larvae. Activities at nights, may me fall asleep. Bath by pools very dirty with need for restoration. First picture is showing a lamp in the lobby all full of dirty, rusty and missing a lot of pieces. The other picture shows how dirty was the water pond, I do not know how the fishes survived there. Will never Come back here. Very back experience. I had been in other places that were not a 5 start and had better service and more clean than this place.
