    “Beautiful Rivera Maya Retreat!”

    Writing this review after my second stay at the Occidental Grand Xcaret, and my first time as staying as a My Barcelo member. Love this resort, and definitely will be going back ASAP. Pros: -If you're a My Barcelo member (which is free to join), you get free WiFi throughout the resort, member-only discounts, and the occasional gift or upgrade: we got a room upgrade, spa service discounts, and a free bottle of tequila on check-in! -the food is AMAZING! Seriously, I have not stopped thinking about the food since our first trip, and it was even better this time. I literally eat my body weight at this resort every time I go. Somehow I still fit back on the plane on the way home... you get the point -Dining service is great! You just have to indicate how much service you actually want at the buffets, because those can be entirely self-service if you want (duh, it's a buffet). Yusep at Le Buffet took great care of us during our stay. -Beach-front chairs and sun beds are super relaxing -Customer service is superb. Antoniya and Tsiri went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and easy. Antoniya even made sure that our unaffiliated shuttle was going to arrive on-time to pick us up on our last day. Love her!! -Front desk is quick to respond to problems. The battery on our room's keyless lock stopped working so we couldn't swipe in, and the concierge had maintenance there and the battery replaced in under 30 minutes. -Surrounded by nature! Monkeys, iguanas, birds, tropical fish, beautiful foliage, etc -Spa is relaxing and clean, and Sarai at the front desk will make booking your experience very easy -Resort staff have plenty of fun things to do when it rains -The bed was seriously the most comfortable bed I've slept in! Disclaimer: I have a terrible back and require a medium-firm mattress for comfort; if you're not spinally-challenged like me, the beds may not feel as heavenly -Cleaning staff kept our room spotless and well-stocked during our stay -I don't have kids and am not a family person but the families and kids have so many fun things to do at the resort that they don't get in the way of relaxing couples' time Cons: -It seems that admission to the Xcaret park (adjacent to the resort) has gotten more expensive since our last visit---almost $200/person for admission, which is way too pricey (food and certain activities are not included in the admission price). Yet the park is a key feature of the resort, so it's a must-do and you just have to suck it up and fork out some $$ -Gym is really small and could be bigger (I'm a fitness junkie/need a nice gym to work off the 500000 calories I consume a day when here) -Resort is a 1-hour shuttle ride from nearest airport, and resort shuttle service is more expensive than the unaffiliateds (went with Cancun Shuttle and had a decent experience) -Spa service prices are in USD and are well above market average (comparing to Washington DC prices). Although the massages are quite good, I don't think a 25 minute massage is ever worth $80 + tip. -Resort sprays for mosquitoes every afternoon. Good to get rid of mosquitoes, but I swear the repellent they use made me cough -Can't do takeout from the "specialty restaurants"; I wanted to order something from La Hacienda and take it back to my room because I wasn't feeling well, but the host said I wasn't allowed for health reasons. Didn't quite make sense because the night before we ate there, and I didn't finish my fajitas, so our sweet waiter packaged them up for me to take back to the room and got me an extra plate for desserts. -Timeshare and event hagglers! Many people will come up to you while you're trying to relax at the pool or beach and ask if you want to go to a timeshare presentation, get a spa service, or go to some party, etc. I typically politely declined, made a crazy face, or said I'd already done it to make them go away. -Hard to get change when you need it! You aren't expected to tip, but our service was so great that we were trying to make it rain on our waiters and customer service biddies, but we had to ask around to find someone that could break large bills. They should get a change machine!

    “Nice, expansive, glorious and a walk to the beach”

    The lobby of the hotel is glorious. The grounds are beautiful and well manicured. There are shops, pools beaches, ocean and plenty of sand. The room I had was in building 10 and was about a 5-7 minute walk to the beach but there are shuttles you can take also. The food is mainly good but don't go to the buffet for dinner, that was not so good. Gentlemen will need long pants and closed shoes for the more formal restaurants. I went to the Sonora Grill twice and had one good meal and one so/so. Service was good and the staff is very nice everywhere. There are no elevators so the bell men will carry your stuff up the stairs. Take many small bills so you can tip people along the way.

    “Evcilent holiday”

    I loved this hotel, i stayed her for 14 days, the staff very helpful. I stayed in block 22, the concierge Alma was was fabulous nothing was too much trouble for her or her assistants, the, maids in the block did a fantastic job as well, they worked very hard as did the restraint staff, in particular the staff in the poolside restraint and bar, I only have one criticise, the menu is this restraint could have been a lot better, the food itself was great, but a limited choice ,and the same every night. But there are other restraints available. The beach restraint was a very good place to eat and again the staff were fabulous. Would i stay here again yes defiantly

    “No fire alarms, no sprinklers, total chaos and lack of remorse”

    Our family arrived on April 20th and were placed in building 18. After a very long day having been up since 330 am with our 10yr old daughter we were just going for a stroll before bed when we smelled smoke. No alarms. Someone ran past telling us building 18 was on fire. After being ushered into a hot meeting room and kept there until around midnight (no offer to be placed elsewhere, daughter trying to sleep on chairs) when finally after badgering management did we finally get another room for the night. All of our belongings including money, passports etc were still in building 18 which they were letting people go in to get belongings in random order. Daughter in bed my husband and I go on deck and we see flames. Now the main lobby which was attached to our new building (12) is also on fire! NO ALARMS. We run from room dodging flaming debris with our panicked daughter and began informing everyone we saw (including many unaware hotel employees) as we ran to the beach. Fast forward hrs later and they try to make us all stay in the same meeting room attached to the building which was just in fire! It was full of smoke, couldn't breath so we went back and slept in beach chairs (while scared to death so not sleep more like passed out for a bit). We had one phone with dying battery that is all. Saved as thought would need to call consolate in morning to get the hell out of Mexico with clothes on our backs. We woke up at daybreak and finally got our belongings. We were still expected to stay in room attached to lobby smelled of mildew and now horrible smoke, the curtain wouldn't even close. It was gross. Back and forth to guest services trying to get anything and was like pulling teeth. Our "manager"Beatrice Gonzales lied outright telling us we were on wait list for Royal Level (honest employee informed us otherwise) and that she had tried calling us when another room became available (no calls attempted, work for telco, other calls working fine). Finally after 3 days of bs get decent room after having to waste so much time and energy that should have been relaxing. Now, I am not a credit hunter. Read my other reviews, I have never complained. They told me to contact Costo which I did and what was the hotel offering? One nights credit. Despite having wasted so much time and energy and straight up losing time(day after fire when we got room slept all day). Also, I can't impart well enough the terror we felt that night. My daughter has nightmares about fire (we almost ran right into lobby where roof was completely engulfed and falling in before we turned around). Shame on the Occidental and shame on the Barcelo group for letting them get away with this. It was chaos! No alarms, no sprinklers, no protocol. We stayed the remainder of our trip as we had the unlimited passes to Xcaret only. If you do go, the front line staff are all lovely and kind. Bring tips! Beware however, should anything bad happen you are on your own. I waited to leave a review hoping for some sort of good will gesture, some remorse, an offer to start over...nada.

    “Amazing Antoniya!!”

    I spent a week at Occidental and I was blown away by the outstanding service! Everyone was so friendly. One person who really stood out was Antoniya Ruseva- she was so helpful, accommodating and always willing to go the extra mile to help us guests out. Highly recommend this beautiful hotel. :)
