    “Barcelo's Bargain-Basement El Cheapo Resort--Part 2”

    Let me start off by saying I am an Occidental Vacation Club (OVC) Member now for 15 years and probably the most frequent guest at the Allegro Cozumel. 15 weeks in 2012, 16 weeks in 2013, 16 weeks in 2014, 20 weeks in 2015, 20 weeks in 2016. 2017—11 weeks. 2018—7 weeks. Why did I come back again and again? Because of the diving. I have done probably 800 dives in Cozumel in the last 10 years. I have disregarded the situation at the hotel because of the diving. No more. Now the diving is sub-par. Columbia shallow used to have a million fish—now, less than 50. Many fewer turtles and sharks. Many reefs dead and algae covered, lots of coral bleaching. For newbie divers, it’s probably ok. But not for this Old Salt. This has nothing to do with the hotel, but let’s DO talk about the hotel. For newbies, the hotel is probably ok. But for me? Not so much. I have a much better bed at home, much better sheets, much better air conditioning, much more room, much better TV/internet. I am a Grand Level Member. There used to be better liquor at the First Club than at the rest of the hotel. Now it’s all the same. The 5pm snacks used to be pretty good—now cold hot dogs on a stick. The furniture at the First Club is nasty and soiled, has not been replaced in at least 5-6 years. The TV in the First Club does not play back USB media, was supposed to be replaced years ago but never was. This is NOT an upscale experience anymore. Barcelo, the new owners, have done NOTHING for the First Club (where Members have invested in the OVC), instead concentrating on the hotel side, where 2 night/3 day packages are sold to Mexican nationals for $20 per person/per night less than to people who have invested in this property. The food? Much better at home. Even the Mexican food. I know, hard to believe, but it’s the truth. Greasy chips, frozen pasty, tastless guacamole. I did enjoy the crema de elote (cream corn soup). The minestrone at the “Italian” restaurant was sometimes very good, other times not so good. Sometimes they had bleu cheese, oftentimes not. The “Oriental” entrees were very much overcooked. The “sushi” was a joke. All restaurants suffer from the C word—CONSISTENCY. I never ate at the buffet, WAY too hot, no air circulation, BAD food. Lunch was NEVER very good—if there was paella, the locals trashed the buffet early, leaving only rice. Tasteless greasy burgers, processed “cheese”. NO pizza after a week or so, and never very good, droopy crust and bad toppings. I observed a worker diluting the ketchup with water by 50%, leaving tasteless soupy red stuff that wasn’t fit to serve a dog. Yuck. On weekends you got elbowed out of line by the locals, and there was a 20-30 minute wait to get a table. Would I recommend buying into the Vacation Club? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

    “Great Beach.. So So food”

    Awesome Beach. Close walk from just about any room to the beach and the beach was never crowded. Great waters, crystal clear and nice assortment of fish if you are snorkeling. Very convenient. We did a snorkel excursion and they picked us up at a dock at our beach. The Grounds were immaculate, kept up very will. On the down side was the food. Note I had read other reviews about the food being bad, and for the most part that was true. The specialty restaurants (Italian, Japanese, Mexican) were awesome. but depending on how many days you stay you can only go 1 or 2 times for your stay. We had a 5 night stay and got 2 visit to specialty restaurants. Otherwise you eat at the main buffet or at the pool. Food quality just was not good. Mushy hamburger patties, felt like 10% beef. Not much on variety or taste on the buffet. Also, they were big on recycling too. Items, you saw at lunch or breakfast would show up again at dinner. We went for the beach and not the food so was not super disappointed about the food, but sometimes seems there was nothing I wanted to eat. Even though it's all inclusive, I would recommend maybe eating outside of the resort at least one night.

    “Had high hopes but were disappointed.”

    Service was marginal at best. Food was not appetizing. Dining room was sweltering even though advertised as air conditioned. We didn’t feel like welcomed guests. Not the level of service or friendliness that you would hope for or expect at a resort.

    “One of the best places in the world.”

    Excelent option for travel with family, friends or couples. Amazing beach with very good beach service. Great service, price, location, bars and the best scuba diving pro dive Cozumel. Definitely a place to return more than once.

    “I would not recommended the hotel”

    The hotel had lines for everything from check in, breakfast, lunch, dinner and bars. I would not recommend the hotel because I could not sleep. You could hear everything the neighbors said or did - talking, television, children crying, people talking and arguing etc. I also thought that the hotel is for families with children and that should be made clear.
