    “READ THIS BEFORE BOOKING”

    We went with 40+ people all staying at different parts of the resort with the same common issues. To better understand the resort before you book - read the following : - although all-inclusive there are a lot of restrictions at this resort. - alcohol is not served before 12pm!! ( this is unheard of for me) - no servers along the beach or pool like at other resorts to serve food or drinks - the only 24 hour place to eat is at Strikers sports bar (snack bar food) and is located at Maya Caribe which is quite a walk if you end up on the other end. - the buffets in the lobbies close from 1030-1230 and then again from 330-630pm. And then closes at 10pm. - You must be dry and covered to eat anywhere even the pool snack bars. - they ran out of pool/beach towels everyday - room service charges $9 per item ordered ( that’s right. Not per call. Per item.) ( this can free if you upgrade to premium 25pp/night. Which probably won’t even be worth it because the room service food was NOT good. We ordered pasta and a burger - how can you even mess that up?) - you have a limited quantity of times you can dine a la carte. ( for example, in a 4 night stay you get 2 vouchers. In a 7 night stay you get 4 vouchers) ( this can change again if you upgrade) - the resort is HUGE making it hard to get around especially if your travelling with kids or elderly. - we tip a LOT. This is the only resort we’ve been at so far that just don’t seem to be appreciative. - service is slow - seems to be understaffed no matter where you go on the resort. In short, you pay for an all inclusive price but they seem to be restrictive of when and where they want to serve you food and alcohol. And want you to upgrade to premium. Take your money elsewhere and enjoy a different all inclusive resort with your family and friends!! Trust me!! I ran into a lady who said she’s stayed at this resort 5 years in a row and said that things are going downhill fast.

    “Going Downhill”

    I first stayed here 10 years ago. I have been back 5 times since then, last week being the most recent. Sadly this resort is going downhill It started with having to wait 1.5 hrs in line to check in. They had only 2 people at the front desk who were extremely slow at checking guests in. As the line grew longer, they finally added 1 more to speed things up. Once we were finally checked in and in our room, we discovered our fridge was not working. We discovered that the plug had broken off in the wall socket. The furniture in the rooms have not been upgraded from the furniture that was in the room 10 years ago. The selection of food in the buffets have greatly declined as well as the quality of the food. We were allowed our choice of 3 restaurants during our stay. Our first was the Spanish restaurant. The salad bar was not even ready when we arrived. I ordered steak strips well done and they were served rare. The next restaurant was the Italian restaurant. Once again I ordered beef scallops well done and was served rare. Our final night was the Steak House, hoping I could finally get a good steak, I ordered the New York well done and received a rare ribeye. The pool bars do not serve alcoholic beverages until noon now. This is new for this year apparently. The maids skipped cleaning our room one day. Had to leave a note on the bed to ensure they replace our towels every day. It appears that all of their interests are in setting up the new adults only section of the resort. It’s sad because we have always chosen to stay at the Barcelo Maya Tropical because we knew we were going to get greats service and food....this is not the case anymore. Time to find another resort.

    “Day two”

    The staff here go above and beyond. Had a dinner at the buffet tonight and our waiter was very sweet, Alfredo Tina, let me practise my sad Spanish and told me my name Kim meant sun in the Mayan language. I do have to complain about the use of artificial sweeteners in the juices as I just can't understand why ruin beautiful fresh fruit juices with disgusting sucralose or aspartame. The fresh fruit and salad ingredients are amazing. The buffet meats are all dry and very unappealing. I know it is hard to keep it fresh and exciting but as this is only day 2 of 9 so will probably loose weight if it wasn't for all the alcohol. Going to the show tonight will check in again tomorrow.

    “Don't bother.”

    Right from the start of the trip it was awful. The front desk staff barely spoke English and any request was just straight "No'. There is an environmental tax fee that we didnt know about, on top of that couldnt give us change in USD or CAD, and machine was not working. They are not very accommodating. We were there for my best friends wedding and there were a lot of issues that would take me awhile to type out. If you would like to know more information just message me. I would never go to this resort ever.. actually..any Barcelos if this is how they operate. Also, this is not an "all inclusive". There are a lot of extra fees, and no alcohol served before 12pm.

    “Excelentní pláž, pokoj/obsluha hrozná, jídlo skvělé”

    Tohle bude jednoduchá recenze. Začnu s tím dobrým. Pláž/bazén byly jedny z nejlepších, ve kterých jsem kdy byl. Spousta místa, mnoho lehátek, hodně stínu a dobrého písku. Tady není nač si stěžovat a taky jsme tu strávili většinu pobytu. Pokoj/obsluha Ty byly naopak zase jedny z nejhorších, jaké jsem kdy zažil. Mají problém s vlhkostí. Jakmile jsme vešli do pokoje, ucítili jsme odpornou plíseň. Zápach plísně setrvával, i když jsme se snažili otevírat dveře a okna jak to jen šlo. Ani klimatizace nepomohla. Budete vlhcí a vaše oblečení bude s dalšími dny vlhčí a vlhčí. Musel jsem dát všechny knížky a brožury ven, protože už taky začínaly nehezky páchnout. Polštáře mi taky nevoněly. Slyšel jsem ale, že to záleží na umístění a patře, ve kterém se váš hotel nachází. Obsluha Bude vám doneseno jídlo a pití. Na všechno ostatní můžete zapomenout. Měli jsme rozbité hodiny a televizi a nebyli schopní nám je opravit/vyměnit. Musel jsem volat aspoň pětkrát během dvou dní, než konečně někoho poslali. Otřesné. Jídlo Jídlo bylo vynikající a bufet velmi dobrý. Restaurace byly taky vynikající. Určitě lepší, než Cuba.
