    “Unfortunate experience in a beautiful country”

    Here’s the good part. This was our first time visiting Costa Rica and we loved it. At the hotel, there are some hard-working men and women in the restaurants and in housekeeping. At the taxi stand, Mayiza is a jewel and a genuine ambassador for the hotel. Then we run out of positive things to say. Our 11-day “Premium Luxury” here was a terrible vacation. Some of the customer care representatives range from thoughtless and tone-deaf, to outright hostile. The Premium Luxury experience is a joke. And Corporate “policies” are undermining the customer experience instead of supporting it. Two stories among many that are indicative of the quality of stay: Re: “Premium Luxury”. We’re provided a specific phone number to reach PL representatives and they’re supposed to make all our reservations. The number was a) was out of order 50 per cent of the time with a Spanish recording that said nothing we understood, b) they answered 25 per cent of the time and c) when they didn’t answer, the phone defaulted to the front desk where we’re told, “You’re supposed to call your Premium Luxury representatives, not us.” Dinner reservations have to be made on the same day starting at 8 A.M BUT Premium Luxury representatives don’t start work until 8:30 A.M. By that point, the specialty restaurants are either fully booked or have reservations only available at ridiculous times like 6 PM or 9PM. Great PL benefit. Re: customer service. The beach is public so zero service from the hotel and the bar is a hike uphill. No problem. We’re happy to walk up, as were our friends. In fact, our friend volunteered to go get drinks for all four of us. He hiked to the bar, ordered two drinks for each of us, and then asked to borrow a tray with which to carry them. There are only about 1,000 trays on the property after all, but no, he couldn't do that. The bartender couldn’t help him carry them either because Corporate Policy says he can’t go to the beach. Finally, drinks melting everywhere, our friend picked up a small, ugly, plastic pool stool, put the drinks on that and carried it down to us, promising to bring it back. If it isn’t bad enough that he has to do this in the first place, about 10 minutes later, an armed – armed! – security guard comes down the stairs and storms across the beach, a tour representative in his wake like they were preparing for a fight, picks up the stool and goes marching back up the stairs. From soup-to-nuts, this whole experience is so ridiculous it’s hard to articulate. A tray is hard? Really? Nothing can be done to help your customer? And then Security?? We could go on here about the quality of the food, the fact that our King bed was propped up on two double boxsprings that didn't sit evenly so it was like sleeping on a hill for 10 days, shoddy WiFi or that are TripAdvisor top-rated CR tour guide kept getting bared from the property by Security, delaying our tours until we hiked down the property to meet him, but I'm going to wrap up with the experience of the spraying of the bugs. So, we’re sitting on our deck in the afternoon, reading, watching the sunset start, having a drink, relaxing on vacation as vacationers do – and then, suddenly! A man in a face-mask wielding a motorized spray cannon! It sounds like a machine gun meets a lawn mower, and he stands at the edge of our row of rooms, waving frantically for us to get inside and then blasts blue smoke, covering everything the eye can see! This happened on three different afternoons. The first time, we went to the front desk where a representative assured us that they only sprayed twice a week with a chemical – she had no idea what it was – but that isn’t harmful to humans. Now, we’re no friend of Dengue, obviously. If spraying is required, does it really need to be in the middle of the afternoon? And if the answer is yes, then why not send a note to your treasured guests that says “Tomorrow between X and X, we’ll be spraying for mosquitos, so you might want to be at the beach or at the bar or anywhere but on your deck.” Clearly, the whole experience is invasive. The customer reasonably deserves to know what they're breathing. In fact, the third time our afternoon was decimated, we asked a front desk representative for a senior-level contact to state our concerns and ask questions and a surly young man said there might be a manager in tomorrow morning. There was no way to leave a message. Obviously, nobody wants any of this stress on a vacation. We would not recommend this hotel. If you do stay, be prepared to make the best of things yourself and don’t buy into the Premium Luxury upgrade.

    “We love Costa Rica”

    This resort out did our expectations. Every aspect of our trip was over the top because of the staff and facilities. The food is amazing. The bars are fun. The conciers are courteous and helpful. The game room was great and I loved the adults only atmosphere. I wish they had an ATM on site, but I understand why they don't because once you pay, pretty much everything is included. We will definitely go back.

    “The place to spend your vacation time!”

    A+ Our overall eight night stay at this resort was far more than what we expected! My wife and I had a very enjoyable stay and hopefully we will someday return to your resort in the very near future! Please relay our appreciation to the staff who serviced our room #2302...thanks!

    “Not very good ”

    We stayed two nights on Occidental Papagayo and I have to say, we're not impressed. Some of the staff are not friendly and you just feel like you're not welcome. When we arrived no one help with the baggage and guess who took it to the room ? There are no elavators and a lot of stairs. There is no free Wi-fi ,so we paid 20$ for 2 days of access..but guess what? It doesn't work most of the time and when it does it's like the 90's internet. When we arrived to the room (wich we had to find by ourselves) the safe was already closed and with no instructions. The buffet is all the same, every day. You can only book activities or restaurants on the same day and they're always full. When we finally manage to book something (the snorkling lesson) it went wrong and the reservation was never made. We did reservation on the oriental restaurant just to find a poor sushi and a poor service, it took too long to ask us what we wanted. If you smoke be ready to sneak to the back door of the bar on the main reception because that's the only place where you can pick up a cigarret. The animation is very poor and you end up going to sleep at 10pm. Overall this resort let us down. The staff (not all ) makes you feel unwelcome unless you show them a dollar bill. The food it's nothing special and the service is less than average.

    “Great Place to Stay”

    Had a very good time at this all inclusive hotel. The grounds are clean and luxurious, the staff are all terrific. Really nice pool and a great beach at the bottom of the hotel. If you are looking for excursions speak to Noberto on the beach who took us on a private tour to Rincon National Park, he is very knowledgeable and friendly you can't go wrong.

    “We love Costa Rica”
