Although Costa Rica covers less than 0.03% of the planet's land surface, it is home to about 5% of all global biodiversity. With more than 500,000 species, about 4% are native to the country.
The official language is Spanish, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas, hotels and restaurants.
The official currency is the Costa Rican colón (CRC), but U.S. dollars (USD) are accepted almost everywhere in the country. It is advisable to bring colones for small local purchases.
Costa Rica has a tropical climate with two seasons: Dry season (December to April) and rainy season (May to November). The dry season is the ideal time to visit due to a lower probability of rain. The rainy season is also recommended, as rainfall is usually brief and does not affect tourist activities.
Citizens of most countries only need a valid passport. A visa is not required for stays of up to 90 days. It is mandatory to fill in a health form before entering the country.
Public transport connects major cities and tourist areas, but for added flexibility, renting a car is recommended. Private transfer services and taxis are also available.
Costa Rica is one of the safest countries in Central America. However, it is advised to take regular precautions, such as taking care of your belongings and avoiding walking alone in isolated areas at night.
Mandatory vaccinations are not required, although those for hepatitis A, tetanus and typhoid fever are recommended, in addition to being up to date with your standard vaccination schedule.
