    “Eighth trip and it was the best yet!”

    Staying at the Royal Hideaway is a treat to be savored! The grounds, rooms and restaurants are beautiful! The food and drinks are some of the best in the world. (We travel 4-6 times a year and this is our favorite destination.) And the folks that serve you are incredibly kind and attentive. I appreciate the work that management does to keep this resort at the highest possible level! My wife and I usually dine for 90 - 120 minutes at every meal. We'll start with wine (or champagne & coffee in the morning), snack on an appetizer, enjoy a salad, enjoy our entrees, drink a cappuccino and then have desert. The evening meals are always al a carte. The buffets at breakfast and lunch are out-of-this-world good. (You can also dine al a carte for breakfast and lunch if you'd like--and we did a couple of times.) The servers never make you feel rushed and the managers always address you by name ... it makes you feel special. The resort has great entertainment too! The shows at the sports bar are fun and the piano player at La Ventana's is incredible. If you are thinking about this resort, I promise you won't regret going. And finally, a shout-out to all the kind people: Chef Alejandro Sanchez - a great chef and true gentleman Christain Rivas - Manager at the Deck for Breakfast and Lunch. I am proud to call this man my friend. Oscar (concierge for building 27). If you need anything, Oscar will take care of it. He remembered the favorite beers of my wife and I, and had them waiting on ice when we checked-in.     “Resort has gone downhill, not 4.5 or 5 stars”

    The rooms were fantastic. The grounds especially the pool need a lot of updating. There were numerous missing tiles and cracks in all pools especially the private pool. The stucco work around the private pool was also very worn and old. The pools were filthy continually, with sand leaves, and bugs. The waterways around the grounds also seem old and not well maintained. We were there in February and felt like a lot has gone downhill with the resort in that short 7 month time frame. My husband and I thought Azia was good. Spices and The Grill not so much as compared to 7 months ago. The quality of steak was very fatty at The Grill and the fish not so good. You used to offer lobster but now they want an additional $50 per person. We both had the traditional Yucatán Pork at Spices, the meat was very fatty and I couldn’t even eat mine. This is very different from the same version at Barcelo. The deck lunch was excellent at Spices. Unfortunately this was closed 2 of our 4 days there due to an event. When we were there in February it wasn’t open at all and we feel that this was a disappointment seeing that we were there for 8 days and would have loved to have had lunch there and had options other than eating lunch downstairs at the grill everyday. We enjoyed the dinner show a lot and the food was excellent as well as the entertainment celebrating Mexico’s Independence Day. Entertainment was wonderful, tequila tasting was fun. We really enjoyed afternoon tea, however this has changed since we were last there. You used to get your own tower of treats included macaroons which I loved. I was very disappointed that nothing was done special for my husbands birthday the day that we checked in. I had specified on our reservation that it was his birthday. Called back to make sure it was in the system. Emailed Mario the concierge a few days prior to check in to make a special dinner (we were given a 10pm reservation at Azia and seated at a regular table and not in the private room.) They did not put a candle in his dessert as I had asked when we checked into dinner, no cake delivered to the room as was done for my birthday there in the past. Our concierge was decorating someone else’s room the day after my husbands birthday and when I saw him doing it he said it’s your husbands birthday. I told it was the day before and he asked if I wanted him to decorate our room, he did it the following day which was 3 days after my husbands actual birthday. Overall there were some plus’s but definitely a lot of minus’s. It really is a shame that this resort is advertised as 4.5 and sometimes 5 stars on certain travel sites. I would say it is higher than a 3.5 but not quite 4 stars in a lot of areas. We met several couples from the UK, some had been there before and also thought it had gone way downhill. The others were disappointed as the resort appeared larger and more well kept in the photos. We all agreed that the star status did not fit the resort unfortunately.

    “Fourth visit to our little paradise”

    Another fantastic week at the best resort in the Rivera Maya. This place has the best staff that makes you feel welcome and comfortable. Smaller than most reports for that intimate feel yet everything you could want. Definitely not the party resort so don't come looking for shots til 2 am, but you can go into town for that at Coco Bongos. Food is great at all the restaurants. Make your reservations for the week when you arrive and don't sweat it if you can't get the time you want. It all works out. You're on vacation so go with the flow and have a good time.

    “Paradise in playar de carmen”

    Nice 5 days at this resort . We had great time with excellent service. Food was amazing. Friendly staff that went out if the way. From the door man to bartenders to waitresses. I was happy with our choice of resort. Highly recommended. I mean you the more people at resort I feel the less quality of everything danishes. So just about 200 people in this resort. Everything and everyone works in harmony.
