Although there are no golf courses in Fuengirola, it is surrounded by top class golf facilities, just a few minutes drive from the centre. Here we tell you which ones they are, plus their technical and landscape characteristics, as well as the facilities that enhance the course and make it a real pleasure.
Top golf courses in the Fuengirola area
Mijas Golf Club
Just ten minutes from the centre of Fuengirola, Mijas Golf Club is one of the most prestigious golf resorts on the Costa del Sol. It has two courses, both with 18 holes: Los Lagos and Los Olivos. Both were designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., one of the most influential architects in the history of golf.
– Los Lagos: totally refurbished in 2012, it retains the design and is characterised by wide fairways and few forest trees obstacles. Nevertheless, its numerous bunkers and nine lakes make it a challenge. The most stunning feature is the ‘golf ball bridge’. The total area is 52 hectares.
– Los Olivos: this 40-hectare area is more technical and demanding. The main difficulties are the olive trees that give it its name and the fact that it has narrower fairways, with elevated greens that require great precision.
Both are groomed to the last detail and suitable for all handicaps. They have a large clubhouse, located in an old Andalusian farmhouse, with a restaurant that has a terrace with a panoramic view that provides a menu with local and Mediterranean cuisine, as well as a set menu.
The complete practice area has a putting green and driving range with a full tee line. It is also equipped with the latest screen technology and TrackMan systems. The chipping green was completely refurbished in 2024 with a new bunker.
There is a rental service for electric or manual trolleys and buggies, as well as complete sets of clubs. The pro-shop provides not only a rental service but also a club repair service.
Chaparral Golf Club
Around 12 minutes from Fuengirola by road, Chaparral Golf Club is an 18-hole par 72 course set amongst pine forests (Parkland Forest). The golf course is characterised by wooded landscape, undulating terrain and other natural elements such as small watercourses.
It was designed by Pepe Gancedo, considered one of the great creative minds of golf in Spain and known as the ‘Picasso of Golf’. The layout alternates technical and strategic holes with others that are more open. From many points of the course, you can enjoy views of the sea.
The facilities include a putting green with short game and bunker areas, a training area with 12 individual mats on the lower level, as well as a 70-metre tee line on the upper surface. This practice range is floodlit at night.
As a curiosity, Toptracer technology makes it possible to ‘play’ golf on world-renowned courses, using video cameras and screens that capture and monitor every shot.
The Green Label restaurant provides Andalusian cuisine with a contemporary twist and has a terrace with views of the Mediterranean, Morocco and Gibraltar. It is located in the clubhouse, a white-walled farmhouse with wooden ceilings and balustrades.
Cerrado del Águila Golf & Resort
This 9-hole par 35 course is located in Mijas Costa, about ten minutes by car from Fuengirola, and is perfect for those looking for a fast and demanding game since its design is not exactly simple. Designed by Francisco Navarro, it is next to the old Mijas racecourse and spans 70 hectares. From many of the holes, you can enjoy beautiful sea views.
The course combines wide fairways with medium-sized greens and several water hazards, which forces you to think carefully about every shot.
The facilities include a driving range, a putting green and a gym where you can try out a variety of exercises. Cerrado del Águila also has individual and group lessons and is perfect for playing golf without taking up a whole day.
The clubhouse features a restaurant with a terrace overlooking the sea.
La Cala Golf Resort
Around 20 minutes by car from Fuengirola, in the Mijas countryside, this is one of the largest and all-encompassing resorts in Europe. It has three 18-hole courses: Campo América, Campo Asia and Campo Europa. They were all designed by Cabell B. Robinson.
* América: this is the longest and most open course, ideal for long hitters. The challenges are the rivers and the terrain.
* Asia: this is a very technical course, requires great control for short holes and strategy due to its elevation changes and narrow fairways. It has a particularly challenging design for approach shots.
* Europa: this course is for intermediate players and is more accessible thanks to a flatter terrain and larger greens. Even so, the river crosses eight holes and the bridges complicate the course.
Golf courses aside, La Cala Resort has a hotel, spa, first-class practice areas, several specialised restaurants, a pro-shop and a golf academy.
Alhaurín Golf Resort
This is around 20 minutes by car from Fuengirola and was designed by Severiano Ballesteros. It is an 18-hole par 72 course in a spectacular setting, surrounded by mountains and nature. Ballesteros took full advantage of the terrain’s relief to turn each hole into an attractive challenge.
The variety of shots and the need to use virtually every club in the bag make it great fun for intermediate and advanced players. In addition to the main course, the resort has a 9-hole par 3 course, ideal for short game training.
The golf school runs classes for children as well as adults, with the possibility of private lessons. The driving range has 60 places to practice and is 300 metres long. The clubhouse has a pro-shop and an Italian restaurant.
Cabopino Golf Marbella
This is located in Marbella, about 20 minutes from Fuengirola, and is an 18-hole par 7 golf course, which stands out for its integration with the area’s nature, among pine forests and stunning views of the Mediterranean.
It was designed by Juan Ligués Creus, who combined technical holes with more accessible ones, making it a very dynamic course.
It has a clubhouse, pro-shop, restaurant with a view, driving range and golf school. Its buggy bar service allows players to enjoy drinks at any time during the game and its fleet of electric buggies and trolleys provides players with plenty of autonomy.
Santana Golf & Country Club
In Mijas Costa, about 20 minutes from Fuengirola, this 18-hole par 72 course was built on a 55-hectare former avocado plantation. Designed by Cabell B. Robinson, it stands out for its spaciousness, excellent maintenance and integration into the surrounding landscape.
The fairways are generous but the strategic bunkers and fast greens require concentration. On the course, holes 4, 8, 12 and, above all, 18 are particularly demanding.
The course has an elegant clubhouse, La Cabaña restaurant, driving range, pro-shop and buggy hire. The putting green consists of 9 holes so that you can improve your putting at no extra cost.
