Originally introduced in the 18th century and influenced by European carnival traditions, the Carnival of Santa Cruz has grown over time to become one of the most important carnivals in the world, often compared to those of Rio de Janeiro and Venice.
Despite historical periods when the celebrations were restricted, the Carnival continued to be celebrated by the local population, becoming a powerful symbol of freedom, creativity and cultural identity.
