    “First time in Huatulco”

    This resort (formerly a Sheraton property) is about 25 minute drive from the airport in a fairly secluded area on the bay of Tangolunda and miles from any city hub hub. There is a pounding surf and a very strong undercurrent, the beach is wide and clean but where the water meets the sand it gets quite deep within a few feet, so if you are imagining a leisurely stroll into the ocean, you'll find this beach challenging. The hotel itself is quite large, very clean with the usual well kept gardens and pool. Not all rooms will provide you with an ocean view but that's not unusual in this kind of resort. The following is best on our room alone; I am sure there are better (or worse) depending on what you pay. Ours was very comfortable with 2 queen beds, free safe and mini bar, large glass enclosed shower but no bathtub. Bathrobes and usual amenities are of course included. A flat screen TV and a sizeable patio completes the set up. To our dismay, we found an ashtray and matches in our room but were told that they are to be used only out on the patio... Few minor problems associated with the room were fixed very fast. There are 2 main restaurants, the second one being converted to a specialty for dinner. There are a couple of other specialty restaurants which we didn't visited, because we don't believe in specialty restaurants (my opinion). Both main dining rooms have entrances in either end, which create a problem for the hostesses because people just wander in and seat wherever there is free table; We found that the size of the restaurant does not match the size of the crowd at crunch times. The food we can only describe as good, with little emphasis on fruits. There are no sugar-free options whatsoever. The wait staff gets an A+ for attitude and friendliness and B- for training. However everybody in general is polite friendly and jovial. A pleasant surprise was the theater which is its own proper building, not a general purpose building used as a theater in other venues. Other than the ubiquitous free drinks, they'd give free popcorn as you entered Speaking of the theater, they had a very talented, professional dance troupe and a good 4 piece band that put on a different show 6 nights without any set decorations.. An interesting observation: most resorts with open air seating and restaurants, are plagued by some aggressive black birds that rester patrons, picking up food from plates and making a mess of the furniture. Barcelo's solution? They have a man on patrol with a trained HAWK that chases the pesky birds on command and resting very calmly on its trainer's arm the rest of the time! Brilliant. This is a family friendly resort, with pool activities etc. I give it four stars because there is no 3 and a half option, but your visit will not disappoint you.

    “Great stay except......”

    Loved the Barcelo in many waysl Cleanliness could not be beat. Our room was spotless everyday & so were the grounds & all areas of the hotel. Staff was wonderful. Special thanks to Saul & Luis in food services. Also to Javier & Namien with the entertainment crew. Loved the rooms, patio, access to the pool. My major & really only complaint was the food service. We were there for two weeks & first week did not encounter a problem booking the ala carte resturuants. The second week was a different story. We would be the first in line to book to be told they were all booked up. This happened each day of our second week. We kept being encouraged to go to the buffet however one of the reasons we booked this hotel was the fact it had 5 resturuants to choose from. If I wanted to only eat at a buffet I would have booked at a cheaper hotel with only buffet choices. My other concern was at the buffet for breakfast the food was almost always cold. ie the scrambled eggs. I really hope the hotel looks into improving their food service as otherwise it is a lovely hotel & a perfect location.l

    “Enjoyed our 2 week stay”

    My friend and I spent 2 weeks at this hotel, overall we liked everything about it. The size of the hotel and layout make it very easy to navigate around. The grounds, the pool and beach areas are very clean, also the rooms are immaculate. Very comfy beds and pillows. The staff were amazing, Luis that worked in the buffet was always smiling and singing ... PAPACITOOO LOL ! Saul was always so friendly and hard working, he even came out to wave to everyone on the bus the day we were leaving. Javier and Nemian were always doing their best to make everyone happy with the activities, we did archery and spanish lessons. They also offered water polo, bingo and aqua fit. Bar service around the pool was readily available or you could use the swim up bar. Did not purchase WIFI as so many people complained about the price and lack of connection so we went across the street to the sports bar, ordered an icy cold beer and got free WIFI. My only real complaint is making restaurant reservations at 9am on a daily basis, the first week was great, the 2nd week was absolutely terrible. We were 1st in line and were told there was nothing available for that day ... WTH ? After a lot of frustration and insistence suddenly there were 10 spots available. Another day they called and cancelled our reservations and then again the next day, nothing available, only the buffet. This was not the food service that is expected from a 4 1/2 * resort or the fact that the food was not changed up enough. When i book a resort I make sure that there are at least 5 restaurants to chose from since we always stay 2 weeks, this was a disappointment. Other than this issue it was a much enjoyed vacay at the Barcelo !!!

    “Not a 4 start more like a 2 star ”

    Lobby and hotel grounds- the hotel lobby, bar and grounds are very outdated and the only place that’s air conditioned is the premium lounge that you have to pay extra for. Not cool when you’re staying at a 4 star plus hotel. Pools- there is only two pools and one bar. The pools are outdated and have black mold. It’s hard to get a spot. We went for a wedding and there was 46 of us. A few morning I woke up at 6:30am to get some spots and someone took 4 of our chairs. We would only reserve about 12 chairs or so and we all shared. There was no activities in the pool, sometimes music but even that wasn’t good. Rooms- the rooms are nice and spacious, we were on premium level, but some of the guests that weren’t premium had black mold in their shower ( we have pictures) Food- the food was repetitive and always cold. The seafood was always cold which was cooked seafood that was suppose to be hot. All food was cold unless you got it from the grill which wasn’t good. A few morning we had to line up for breakfast to get a table ( 15-20min) The a la cart restaurants hadn’t to be booked and they weren’t all available at all times. We booked Mexican for the second night we were there and when we got there they said we don’t have a reservation. One person in our group went back to the room and got the slips to show them. They did acoimediate us after. Ricardo Cortez The food manager was great and did everything he could to make our stay better. We also went to the Italian which was surprisingly great food. Spanish al la cart was horrible and it wasn’t Spanish food at all. On the wedding day- the bride and groom paid for platinum package but they didn’t get platinum service. The were told the chairs will be beige and they’re were dark brown. The decoration wasn’t what they were showed in pictures. When it was time for them to cut the cake they didn’t have a plate or a fork !! The groom had to put the cake in a napkin and give it to the bride with his hands. Come on now this is common sense stuff. The dinner arrived cold as usual. The appetizer was cold. The main course was over cooked steak I believe it was brisket that was cooked to death. They were promised fillet. It was companied by powdered mashed potatoes not even real mashed potatoes. Bar- one of the 46 guests had 1 year old daughter and asked one of the bar tenders for a bottle of water. The bar tender said since you don’t have a premium bracelet you can only get a cut of water not bottled water ( how is this hotel 4 plus stars) Room service- only premium get room service everyone else has to pay for it. One might I was ordering room service and the gentleman in the phone told me I’m oderering too much and asked if there are more ppl in my room !! I said NO I have a teenage son who eats a lot. Claudia lijehhulth, Flor Martinez form the premium lounge had incredible customer service and were always so polite and ready to help, They are truly great. This resort should never ever be recommended to anyone having a wedding or anyone under the age of 65. I emailed Kevin from there, because the bride and groom were very upset and he still hasn’t emailed me back. I felt horrible for the bride and groom because the most important day of their life was ruined. They can never get that back. I’m so disappointed that you guys would ever recommend this resort for a wedding. Excertions- we booked the 7 bays on a boat excretion with the hotel not Sunwing ( what a mistake ) They told us there would be washrooms both for men and women. They said it’s a boat for 46ppl. I asked over and over again is it a nice, will it be safe? We had lots of kids in the wedding group and elders. They picked us up at 10am in nice cars and took us to the marina. When we saw the boat we were all shocked. They told us to take life jackets that were scattered all over the boat floor. They were all ripped, none of the buckles worked, and they smelled so horrible. They hadn’t black mold on them as well. The sea was so choppy and the boat wasn’t the right boat for those big waters. Everyone got sick almost 90% were throwing up and sick. We had to cut our trip short and come back. When we got back to the hotel we told them and they said that they don’t understand what black mold is and we got a great deal. 49 ppl and we payed $30 each and $15 for kids. The hotel didn’t care that this was a safety issue with life jackets that are ripped and don’t have buckle that work. Honestly this resort is a 2 start at the most in every way possible. Food, grounds, service. Every single person in our group was unhappy. Most important what was suppose to be the best day in their life for the bride and groom was completely ruined by horrible staff at Barcelo.

    “Couldn’t be happier, Gracias Barcelo!”

    Just returned from 7 incredible days at the Barcelo, Huatulco and I am so sad it is over. My friend and I booked a spontaneous trip and we are so grateful that we ended up here! This hotel exemplifies Mexican pride and hospitality, and went above and beyond our highest hopes for a relaxing and memorable vacation. From the moment we arrived we felt so at home. Our room was clean and spacious, our beds were comfortable, and our mini bar was well stocked daily. Our room was conveniently located on the first floor, steps away from the beach. We spent most of our days enjoying the relaxing atmosphere at the resort. Being able to travel into local communities to experience authentic Mexican food, markets, and lifestyle was an added bonus. We visited La Crucecita, Santa Maria, San Agustin, and Pochutla. The hotel is very beautiful and impressive but it was truly the staff that made the experience so special. The groundskeepers, maintenance crew, housekeeping staff, restaurant staff, bartenders, front desk, bell staff, concierge, activities team, spa, and lifeguards truly are amazing ambassadors for the hotel. I would like to acknowledge the efforts of a number of staff who deserve to be recognized for going the extra mile to make our stay a memorable one: Luis from the pool restaurant, who always remembered us, and brightened our day each morning with his singing, smiling, and making sure that we were well taken care of. Nemian Torres for his enthusiasm and energy. He taught us new games, and was always planning something fun for both kids and adults. Alvaro and Fernando, the bartenders, for creating delicious tequila concoctions and working so hard to keep our drinks filled. Francisco, who was in charge of the water sports, for sharing his knowledge and expertise of the area, and for his sense of humour during Mexican Bingo. Carlos, the lifeguard, for keeping an eye on the waves, and for the friendly and informative conversations. These people are truly some of the friendliest and most hardworking people I have ever met. I would highly recommend this resort for anyone seeking a holiday in the sun in a safe, loving environment. We will cherish the memories that we have made here.     Just returned from 7 incredible days at the Barcelo, Huatulco and I am so sad it is over. My friend and I booked a spontaneous trip and we are so grateful that we ended up here! This hotel exemplifies Mexican pride and hospitality, and went above and beyond our highest hopes for a relaxing and memorable vacation. From the moment we arrived we felt so at home. Our room was clean and spacious, our beds were comfortable, and our mini bar was well stocked daily. Our room was conveniently located on the first floor, steps away from the beach. We spent most of our days enjoying the relaxing atmosphere at the resort. Being able to travel into local communities to experience authentic Mexican food, markets, and lifestyle was an added bonus. We visited La Crucecita, Santa Maria, San Agustin, and Pochutla. The hotel is very beautiful and impressive but it was truly the staff that made the experience so special. The groundskeepers, maintenance crew, housekeeping staff, restaurant staff, bartenders, front desk, bell staff, concierge, activities team, spa, and lifeguards truly are amazing ambassadors for the hotel. I would like to acknowledge the efforts of a number of staff who deserve to be recognized for going the extra mile to make our stay a memorable one: Luis from the pool restaurant, who always remembered us, and brightened our day each morning with his singing, smiling, and making sure that we were well taken care of. Nemian Torres for his enthusiasm and energy. He taught us new games, and was always planning something fun for both kids and adults. Alvaro and Fernando, the bartenders, for creating delicious tequila concoctions and working so hard to keep our drinks filled. Francisco, who was in charge of the water sports, for sharing his knowledge and expertise of the area, and for his sense of humour during Mexican Bingo. Carlos, the lifeguard, for keeping an eye on the waves, and for the friendly and informative conversations. These people are truly some of the friendliest and most hardworking people I have ever met. I would highly recommend this resort for anyone seeking a holiday in the sun in a safe, loving environment. We will cherish the memories that we have made here.
