“Good - but pay attention to the details”

The location is great, as this is a large property, with a nice beach on a sheltered bay, good restaurants & bars, pools, & entertainment . There are things to watch out for with the Barcelo versions of all-included - unless you go for the extra $$ PREMIUM level you don't get: a room phone (makes it hard for medical emergencies & room service) - room service - free wi-fi - premium beverages - limited a la carte restaurant access. They seem to want to nickel & dime you for everything, which makes you wonder why anyone would call it "all-inclusive". You need a lawyer to figure what that really means here.

“Superbly beautiful grounds but a gruelling trip to get there. Very remote via bad road. Caters to Spanish speakers.”

    1. Getting There: To get to this resort, it's a 9 hour plane journey from Vancouver to Liberia, stopping in San Jose en route. THEN it's a 4-hour shuttle ride on a road is, at times, dreadful. OR an overnight stay in San Jose and take shuttle and a ferry the next day. Once you arrive, it's then expensive and time consuming to leave the resort. IMHOP, it is NOT worth it. There are closer destinations! 2. Noise: My guess is that 80% of the guests are Costa Rican. They enjoy the pool, bars and gigantic meals at the buffet. The beach is pretty much ignored. Entertainment is entirely in Spanish. The kids' show starts at 8pm, followed by an hour of audience participation, and then a performance at 10pm. The PA system is turned up to full volume the entire time and there is no place to escape from 3 hours of cacophony, even in the (beautiful) lobby. It's impossible to carry on a conversation or play a quiet game of cards. 3. WiFi: The Costa Rican guests all appear to have data plans but for others the WiFi is expensive. No free WiFi in the lobby. 4. Grounds: The grounds are superb - meticulously maintained - and there's a magical jungle walk to view macaws and parrots in a rehabilitation area, and lots to see from your balcony, too. The colonial-style 2-story buildings are lovely but be sure to get one well away from the centre (noisy show and disco till the wee hours). 5. Rooms: not well maintained. Our fan wobbled and clicked all night, the A/C roared, the door handle to the room was wobbly, the bathroom tap needed a screw, the patio door was stiff to open. We liked the mini fridge, stocked daily with water, juice, pop, beer. And the sheets and duvets were attractive - white and clean - lots of pillows and comfy mattresses. 6.The beach: very pretty but no waves for body surfing. "Hilos de Oro" - are little stinging jellyfish that you can't see because the water is turbid near the shore. We all had stings, but our grandson had to go to the medic for an injection because of an allergic reaction to a serious sting. Don't know why the resort doesn't put down a carpet or walkway to get over the pebbles to the sandy shore. And people go to the beach to smoke - resort should rake the sand daily. 7. Food: Quantity over quality. They need more a la carte restaurants. The big dining hall is busy, noisy, crowded. We called it "The Trough". Reminded me of summer camp. 8. Sun umbrellas, coffee makers - our room didn't have an umbrella, so we asked the "camarista" (chambermaid). She went into another guest's room and took theirs to give to us. Same thing happened with the coffee maker - some other guest was going to be disappointed. (There's no early coffee available otherwise and to get a restaurant reservation you have to line up an hour ahead, at 7am.) 9. Check in - a nightmare that took 30 mins after a very long day.... Overall, it's a long way to go to sit by a pool and be bombarded with loud and sometimes inappriopriate music (Maybe they didn't know what the English rap lyrics were saying).

“Enjoyed the stay, friendly staff and beautiful view!”

The beach was beautiful, set in a small inlet, the tides were incredible. Resort was well kept, and my view of the ocean past a creek that feeds into the ocean was picturesque. Food was acceptable, but do not anticipate four or five start cuisine. Staff was friendly and helpful.

    “Disappointed ”

My family and I were overall quite disappointed with this resort. Our trip was off to a rocky start. We landed in Liberia, then had a 4 hour drive in a mini van to get to the resort. It was a very sketchy winding road, much of a dirt road under construction. Don't forget your Gravol. This was not the type of road tourists should have been taken on. When we arrived at the resort, we noticed a small airport right next door. Why hadn't we been offered a transfer from Liberia to this small airport? This should have been offered to us by our travel agency instead of doing the four hour drive. The resort is in the middle of the nature. Nice location, but there are no nearby villages (not within a 30 minute drive radius). It is secluded and there are no other resorts around. It is a fairly small resort. Very easy to navigate and get around. We were one of very few Canadian families at the resort. There are mostly Costa Rican and Latino tourists. Most staff members only speak Spanish and do not understand English. The rooms are neither big nor small. Cleanliness is questionable. Watch for bugs entering your room. Keep your shoes clean. Close your luggage at all times. We heard that one family had ant problems in their bathroom. We had a well stocked mini fridge and two bottles of water each day. Towels and face cloths are not always reliably changed, even when left in the bathtub. There is hot water in the shower, but very poor water pressure, especially in the mornings. There is also a television in the room, and a small patio. Our room was on the outskirts of the resorts, and we had a view over some trees. We even spotted monkeys in the trees one morning. It was generally nice and quiet around the villas--no crazy noise or partying late at night. There were a lot of families with young children staying at the resort, which might possibly explain that things were quieter. Also, I hope you're not too afraid of iguanas because there are so many around the villas! The food was OK. Very little variety but generally tasted good. Desserts often didn't taste much. The sushi restaurant was by far our favourite place to eat. Service was excellent as well. The food at the steakhouse was extremely disappointing. Their filet mignon was a sorry excuse. Also, to book a à-la-carte restaurant, we were told to book the same day we would like the reservations for, and to line up before 8 am to book! This was ridiculous! This was also not true, because the staff member doing the bookings was available most of the morning, and could book you in later as long as there was still tables available for that night. There are three bars: one at the pool, one at the lobby, and one at the snack bar. The ones at the pool and snack bar were open during daytime. The lobby bar was open during the evening. None were open 24/7. Drinks were good overall, but there is not an enormous variety. Was glad to see water bottle refill stations. Entertainment was awful during the evenings. There was a kids show at 8 PM that we did not attend, an adult ice breaker show which was at 9 PM, and then the actual show at 10 PM. Shows were only in Spanish which was unfortunate for English speakers. We attended one of the adult ice breaker shows. Although we did not understand much, we did catch on that they were doing improv. At one point, the show became very racist as they were making fun of the Asian population. The public was laughing. We were extremely disappointed and angered by this. There were also several Asian families watching the show. This is not how you welcome the international population to your resort. This would never have been acceptable in my country, since we are very multicultural. We didn't spend much time at the pool, so I have little to say about it. We loved our time at the beach. It was easy to find enough chairs for the entire family. We loved our long walks at low tide during the evening. We didn't really go swimming at the beach, because the waves and currents were very strong. The water is not as turquoise as you would see in the Caribbean. You also run a high risk of stepping on sea creatures! Kayaks are available for rent if you prefer! On the resort grounds, there is also an aviary. It was said to be a sanctuary for birds. They are absolutely beautiful birds but we hated seeing them enclosed in cages. It made us question how ethical their sanctuary is. We hope that these birds will one day be released in the wild if this was a rehabilitation program... these birds seemed unhappy in their cages. There are also tennis courts, soccer fields, a volley ball court, a ping pong table, trampoline, and rock climbing wall. You can also go horseback riding on the beach for an additional fee. Wifi must be purchased. It is not available for free anywhere, not even in the lobby. On a happier note, we did go on a few excursions. These were well organized and we very much enjoyed them. There are many improvements that still need to be done at this resort. It has great potential, but has not been a very welcoming place. Costa Rica is a beautiful country with lots to offer. Unfortunately, I will not be returning to Barcelo Tambor and will not be recommending it to anyone. I will also be letting my travel agency know about my experience, because we were the first family in my city to ever have booked a stay at this resort. On another, if despite all of this you still decide to come to Barcelo Tambor, I have a last piece of advice: beware the squirrels. You'll see why.

“Tried to find something positive, but no luck.”

Want unruly kids? Like rude people? Want a big buffet that has mediocre food? Want to pay a higher rate if you are American or European? Want to pay double on tours arranged through the hotel? This is your place. All inclusive is a joke. Only watered down alcohol that is the rock gut stuff. Have to pay premium ball park prices for good drinks. Wifi is $10 per day and you have to sit in the lobby to use it. The in room phone did not work so I had to go to the desk for literally everything. Can only reserve for the non-buffet restaurants every other day. For that you need to be waiting in line at 7 because reservations open at 8 am and are all full by 8:30 am. Did get in the steakhouse. Ordered a medium rare ribeye. Tough, chewy, amd medium well. Want to get away from the resort? Be prepared to pay 25% more than a regular rate because you are at Barcelo Tambor. Had no hot water half my stay. Horrible shampoo that stripped my hair and ruined the color. No lotion and no wash cloths. Do they expect you to wash your butt with your hands? Ugh. Oddly, more security than the entire town of Motezuma or Tambor. A sign they often have issues. If you leave the resort, you have to check in and out like you are on prison furlough.
