    “Not bad but not great”

Travelers - total of 5 people, 2 couples (1 set early 40s and 2nd set late 40s), and a 21yr old nephew. My 5th AI trip and the 2nd couple's first AI trip - previous cruisers). USA transfers - great service. Found the rep as soon as walked outside who had our name on the list. After a 5min wait, we were able to walk into our private AC shuttle and left for about a 55min drive to our resort. Checkin - Complete honesty... I wasn't happy. We waited a little over an hour to get checked in. This is our 5th vacation package to purchase through Cheap Caribbean (CC) and never had an issue in the past. The resort did not have our reservations so they had to call CC to verify; regardless of my paper confirmation documents. I was irritated but hey it happens. It would have been nice if the front desk offered us beverages right away as you can see the sweat dripping down my body. The lobby area while beautiful, is an open area so there's no AC so when it's hot... it's hot! In my opinion a lobby bar should never be closed. It's not like I'm catching a drink so early; it was 3pm and the lobby bar was closed. We finally got our rooms. They asked if 2 kings were fine which it was for me and my husband but I was asking for the 2nd couple and their 21yr old son. I asked if the rooms had a pull out couch and they stated yes, a sofa bed so i said that was fine. They told us to go the building to get our room keys but from reading other reviews, I wanted to reserve our 2 ala carte restaurants so they told us to go to Guest Services around the corner - that was pleasantly a quick process. They asked if we got our room keys from the front desk and I stated no; I was told to go to the building. They told me no, go back to front desk which I did. When I returned, front desk told me to go to the building. I'm a patient person but I'm starting to get frustrated and mind you, I've been up since 4a for my flight. I go to our building and don't see an office to pick up keys but I see a worker. I asked him where I pick up the key cards and he directed me to Front Desk. I've had it at that point and told him no, I was told to come to this building. He then walked me to the middle of the building to a desk where they were handing out the keycards. Finally I get to my room. Rooms - The rooms are a decent size, king bed with clean sheets and very comfy. We were on the first floor which I don't care for due to safety purposes but I didn't want to complain since they didn't originally have my reservations. The bathroom was very clean; plenty of towels. It's a tub bathroom with a giant size shampoo/conditioner/shower gel dispensers on the wall.. good to know that you don't have to bring any of that! It's a great waterfall shower head that gets nice and hot. Know that when you enter the room, place your key card on the wall slot as it activates the electricity and AC while you're in the room... this helps with conserving energy. ISSUES - my room was fine but the 2nd room with the nephew was not. There was no pull out bed. Perhaps if my nephew wasn't hearly 6ft tall he'd be comfortable on a couch but we didn't pay for anyone to sleep on a couch. Now keep in mind the family we went with do not complain and are happy just to be there... We asked for bed sheets for the sofa from a supervisor, a housekeeper, and front desk all at separate times throughout the day on day 1... then on day 2 again from a supervisor and another housekeeper before we got extra sheets. Keep in mind that at 11pm on day 1 when we called the front desk they said they'd send over right away. I get a knock on my door after midnight from our relatives asking if we can give them an extra pillow and bedsheets from our room since they are tired and waited an hour... no one ever came! We were told to come to the front desk to ask for a different room each morning. I hate complaining but that was the only way they were able to get a different room. GROUNDS - Beautful. There are staff constantly picking up after guests and making sure everything was clean. I've never been to a resort with so many palm trees everywhere; including the beaches which is great to provide so much shade. It's all open so no AC anywhere.. you'll get used to the heat. The beaches are visually nice and there are so many lounge chairs around for you to have a nice spot. I wish the beaches had more sand as it was very firm; no cushion when walking around and sometimes very rocky. At night there is no lighting on the beach so be aware and be careful if going out there... don't be alone. FOOD A La Carte Restos - Our first desired restuarant was the seafood place - Mare Nostrum but unfortunately they were booked the entire time... BUT luckily our first night there it was a seafood theme at the buffet so that was awesome. All the seafood you can think of: grilled lobsters (cut right in half), mussels, claims, shrimp, crab, etc... seafood noodles, seafood paella, multiple different kinds of seafood ceviche. Disclaimer - I have an allergy to crab and shrimp but if it's fresh, I am fine... so happy that I never had to bust out my benadryl! Everything was really good.. only issue was that some of the lobsters were overcooked. My favorite was to go to the hot food area of the seafood for the mixed seafood dishes - there was one that's like a stew that was my favorite. My family are spicy eaters and we love a good dipping sauce so everynight meal we asked for chopped habaneros that they served with lime and salt. We added extra lime and salt then the red and green hot sauce and it was an amazing dipping sauce! - La Fuente - We had 6p reservations. Staff was wonderful. Cold appetizers were served buffet style in the center of the restaurant. I didn't like that you can only order 1 appetizer or soup; there was no option to order more if you liked it. - Kyoto - We were told in the beginning there were no hibachi stations to sit and that we'd have a regular table. Okay that was fine but a bit upset that when we walked in, there were so many open hibachi stations. There were so many staff and we had 6p reservations. There were only 2 other parties in the room so I don't understand why we couldn't get a table. Food was decent but I much preferred the buffet. - Buffet - absolutely nothing to complain about. Staff is on it! They cleaned up everything, grabbed all our food and drinks. They were very entertaining and so attentive. FOod was amazing and fresh. There is a HUGE selection of food.. if you couldn't find anything you did not like.. I simply don't know what to say. Hotel in general: - It seemed there were a lot of things they advertised that were no in service. They advertised an ice cream parlor that was not opened the entire time I was there. Same thing with the surf rider; not in service and I checked daily... not that I wanted to do it but if I had children with us, they would have been interested to try it at least once. If you're advertising things you have online, you better have it opened! Or at least have a sign to say it's closed; under construction and when it will be out of order. - Casino - quite small. They only had black jack, texas and some slot machines. I'm not a huge gambler but wished they had 3 card. - Lovely large marketplace at the resort to get souvenirs. Tips: - bring an insulated container for your drinks at the pool... so helpful and much more clean than walking around with open cups for pool water (and other unmentionables) Overall a pleasant trip but staff too many little things to bother me to not really consider going back. I consider myself a laid back traveller if you look at my other reviews.

    “La Fuente Spanish Restaurant”

Excellent Service and wonderful food - one of the best restaurants at the Maya resort. Leticia Sanchez was a superb server! There's no problem if you do not speak Spanish, they are very accommodating. Dress is slightly fancier than casual.

“We feel at home here, comfortable”

We have been to Barcelo Maya Grand Resort 14 times....love it. The workers are very kind, helpful and polite. The whole resort is very convenient even for handicapped. The rooms are spacious and clean. The food is amazing. I am a picky eater and there is always something that I like. The beach is beautiful There are many many pools to swim in. We stay in the rooms with the swim out pool because the big pools close at 8 o’clock which is early. The swim out pool at 12 1 o’clock in the morning I can still go out there and swim in the water because it is like bathwater. The security of this resort is really safe. I can walk down to the beach by myself and not ever be afraid. They’re always workers riding around on a little motor bikes or golf carts, so you always feel safe. The hospitality and all around for this resort is excellent otherwise we would not have gone back 14 times. We go twice a year for two weeks or more. We have a few favorite waiters in the buffet restaurants. David Xiu who I totally adore and his partner Lorenzo Ruiz in the Buffet Caribe in the AM. These two guys go above and beyond what their work and tells them to do. I look forward to seeing them every trip we go back. They treat you like family and that is one of the reasons why we keep returning .
