    “Very Good Stay ”

We stayed for 2 weeks on this huge resort and were based at the Barcelo maya colonial from 1st June to 15th June. We were very sad to leave. Best bits : The room: large, spacious , kept clean Beach /snorkelling : straight off the beach you can see stingrays, sea turtles and an array of colourful fish species. Food : we found this very good across most speciality restaurants( particularly la trattoria , steakhouse , Tokyo and Kyoto ), all the poolside grills and buffets. As others have recommended, we booked all our reservations in as soon as we arrived and checked in. The Mexican restaurant should have been the star but was the only let down ! Location: great to be relatively close to tulum/playa del carmen aswell as having multiple spectacular cenotes across the highway just outside the hotel. Maya mall : really nice to have these additional amenities on site including the plaza Mexicana , all the gift shops , bars and not to mention, strikers the sports bar which we adored! One thing I would say is it would be great if the hotel could bring in some kind of fully inclusive package option where you could also so you could also use all the additional things like bowling , mini golf , wave rider etc as many times as you like throughout your stay as otherwise it’s quite expensive to add on. Kids facilities : although we don’t yet have any , we were impressed with all the water parks (which were being monitored constantly by lifeguards) and the clubs to keep little ones entertained. We would definitely consider returning when we have children. Gym: utterly beautiful and really clean with modern equipment. Theatre : we saw a few shows and were impressed with the quality of the performances Dive club : on site dressel club is really good with helpful and friendly staff but book dives in advance. It’s more expensive on the property. Room for improvement: the staff were a little aloof compared to other hotels we have stayed in across Mexico and the Caribbean in that they often wouldn’t give you an hola when passing by but by no means rude. I think there is a general language barrier across this resort with many not understanding English. However, we have vowed to improve our Spanish next time rather than let this put us off. The service at the buffets particularly at breakfast or evenings was a bit poor. You will be given a table promptly but often are left half way through your meal without anyone taking a drinks order. We felt that big groups of Americans who often tipped got preferential treatment and to be honest, you don’t expect the basic act of pouring water at the table to take so long when we have all paid a lot of money to be there. But I think the issue here is a simple staffing one not one of laziness at all , just 10 more waiters during busy times would solve the issue instantly. There were no little extra touches from the maids such as towel arrangements despite tipping. The hotel should do more to discourage guests feeding the turtles bananas ! It is not part of their normal diet and is actually altering their behaviour. Children waving them around is asking for trouble , I saw a child very close to receiving a very powerful accidental bite ! One not so good bit : The dolphinarium : for a country that is so conscious about preserving its ecosystems and biodiversity and that protects sea turtles and whale sharks, we are still shocked how they aren’t moving with the times and eradicating these dolphin parks across the riviera maya. The dolphins are so close to the ocean, they can see and smell it but are cooped up in a tiny pool. Although , I think they seem cared for, it’s a terribly sad existence. At the very least they should be in some kind of sea pen but better still they should shut it down. Overall we had another spectacular visit to Mexico and would definitely recommend this hotel.

    “Average food and average week”

Spent a week at this resort with another couple and we all decided we wouldn’t come back based on the cost. Good - the pool is beautiful and was well kept. We went down early each morning and had no problem finding recliners under the many shade pergolas. We ate at the Japanese place, steakhouse, both Italian places, and the Spanish place. We found the dinner meals to all be fairly good and we’re happy with them The room was decent kinsize bed with couch and small table beside it. Small deck with two plastic chairs. Shower area was weird. A normal tub with a rain head at the far end instead of the middle so we had to squeeze into the corner of tub to get full water. And it didn’t drain well so standing in dirty water. Poolside drink service ladies were pretty good but not always Johnny on the spot. The bad - we all felt the lunch buffets were bad. There are zero ala Carter options for lunch. Not even a poolside grill. You. Cannot take food to the pool area which other resorts we’ve been to allowed that. Whatever they passed off as a hamburger meat was a travesty and far from abnormal American burger. The grills at poolside are buffet style as well. Service at the buffets were hit or miss No free hotel wide WiFi. It’s 200 bucks a night and 2018. Come on. We didn’t try but many guests said th dolphin thing on the resort was not worth it nor near as good as other dolphin adventures off campus. The shows at night that we made it to were decent but they don’t start until 930. We would do dinner around 7-730 then have to kill an hour or more and we’re early risers so several nights we didn’t even stay up for them before retiring to the room however.. Our room was right near a theater for these shows so we got to hear them plain as day until sometime around 11pm in our room. Again, for what you’re paying we personally want to go back to a nice quiet room and be able to turn light off and go to sleep when we want to. I know I sound like an old grumpy hack and you’re thinking hey your on vacation suck it up, but as I said we are early risers type of people and deserve quiet for how much money is paid to stay. Bad - I got the 24 hr food poisoning after eating what i suspect was the raw tuna appetizer at the Japanese resteraunt. Never had that happen when choosing that app in the states.
