    “Behind the scenes danger lurks”

This hotel has a great rating, hence booking with them. Overall it's great, and its HUGE, but if you are unlucky your experience will not be 5*. Arrival; We booked the premier package which obviously cost more money, dedicated check-in and a number of other benefits. On arrival we found the room we requested was not available despite having made TUI fully aware that the request was due to a medical condition. We were then offered a different room and then to transfer into the 'correct room' the following day at 4pm. We didn't want to pack/unpack and lose a day of the holiday so we asked to see a manager. We were told they were just finishing a maintenance issue in one room and if we waited 30 minutes it would be fine, we agreed. What we didn't know was it was a 'water/damp' issue - More of this later... The Room; Clean, nice view but smelt of damp on entering though no damp patches showing The Beach; Nice beach, however entry and exit to the sea is often over rock and as such beach shoes are a must. With the waves it was not always easy to get in or out of the sea with both or us falling a number of time and grazing legs. We were told if we walked 'miles that direction' there was a 100% sand entrance, but we didn't bother. One of the main reasons for choosing the hotel was the beach snorkelling which was described by some as the best in the area - obviously boat snorkelling trips would be better but are very expensive ( See later ). Don't be fooled the snorkelling is nothing special, better than the Med but if like me you have beach snorkelled in places like Egypt it's really not that good. Very shallow water depth in some places, poor variety of fish, very little coloured coral. However if you have not done much snorkelling then it would be acceptable. The Excursions ( Via the Dive Club on the Beach ); We did want to do some boat snorkelling as the beach was not great but the prices we thought were very high, a one hour trip was between $ 59 - $ 79 per person, as we normally choose to beach snorkel we could be wrong and this is a normal price. As we snorkel daily this would be a huge cost and as such we decided not to bother. Jet Ski's were $ 60.00 for 30 minutes, however what they didn't tell me when I enquired about the price was that they won't take $'s in cash they want a credit card so they can take a damage deposit, so it was a long trek back to the room to get the card, annoying. The Food; As we book premium we could eat in any restaurant at any time - with booking. We also ate in the main buffet and Strikers Bar, overall the food was ok, a standard hotel type buffet arrangement. The premium restaurant's included, Mexican, fish, steak, Japanese, Italian and a few more. There are two Japanese restaurants and they feature 'show cooking' with the chef preparing the meal in front of you, this is a communal experience with 6-8 other people and was very entertaining and the food excellent. It was so good we tried the other Japanese Restaurant, however what they don't tell you is the show and menu is exactly the same. People without the premium package only have limited premium restaurant visits, I would have been really sad to have missed out on another option if I had wasted my vouchers to see literally exactly the same thing. The worst premium restaurant was actually the Mexican, trust me of you want Mexican food go off site - well worth paying for, it was not good at all on site. The best surprised us - it was one of the restaurants we were not going to bother with as its 'Pizza and Pasta' - The Italian. I am so glad we did bother, amazing starters ( help yourself ) , the choice includes smoked salmon, prawns, cold meats, salads. Very Very good. We went twice actually and I had the Beef Rib - Amazing and Lamb Chops - Excellent. The Pool & Pool Bar; Pool was clean and normally you could find a bed if you arrived before 11.30, after that it was difficult to find a 'spot' as the 'lets put our towels on the bed and not use it till 3pm crew were about'. The pool bar is as expected apart from that they do not offer any form of tea or coffee, which I would normally expect. This would have been good as the even in the sun the pool is chilly and on the cloudy days I would even say cold. Transport; As the hotel is so huge they actually use busses to transport the guests, they look the same but have different routes, normal wait 5-20 minutes - It's a nice idea and works well but they don't tell you that after 11pm the routes changes again and only goes to the lobby areas, don't get caught like us waiting for 35 minutes in the rain elsewhere. All the above are minor issues so why the 3* rating... Mold; Within the first week of the holiday mold stated growing on all our clothes in the wardrobe as well as infesting a leather traveling bag. This was so bad that the hotel had to wash and iron all our clothes - they did this free of charge. The leather bag was so badly infested that it had to be taken overnight to have 'special treatment and cleaning', we were assured that this treatment would remove mold entirely and not damage the leather. Our concern was that on return to the UK that the mold would appear again and we would have to take the bag to a leather restoration specialist. We asked management for compensation towards this cost and for our inconvenience, what a terrible experience. We saw 3-4 different managers all saying different things, some blamed us for the mold as we had 'used the air conditioning on too cold a setting', they really did not seem to care and explained it's such an isolated incident they have done all they can. Upon return to the UK what a surprise the mold was back. We took the bag to a leather restoration specialist who advised that the 'special chemicals' used to clean the bag in Mexico had damaged the leather to such an extent that restoration/repair was not economical. The replacement bag cost £ 250.00 / $ 300.00. I then did a little research into the whole Barceló Resort Complex - 4 Hotels in 1. Type in mold into trip adviser and you will find that the management lied, it's not an isolated issue, certainly it's not a problem in all rooms, hence the overall ratings, but it's a known issue. Its also in all parts of the hotel ( certain rooms ) , not just the Colonial. Within 10 days of our return we developed chest infections and went to the doctor and were advised to be tested for a mold infection on our lungs, which was positive. Luckily there will be no long term issues as we dealt with this promptly, but what if we hadn't? The management are aware of the situation yet still rent the rooms despite there being a real risk to health and personal property, would this be in the UK they would be closed down by environmental health and sued by the guests. So my question is, with so may good hotels in the area why book here and take the risk with your health and property ? Do you feel lucky ?

Dani from the pool activities section was awesome! He kept us entertained everyday with pool volleyball, mexican bingo, and Zumba. He was so friendly and personable. Even when busy Dani would take the time to stop and have a conversation with both my husband and I. If you visit the barcelo maya grand resort make sure to stop by the tropical/colonial pool and visit Dani!

“2nd time at Barcelo Maya Colonial”

Our trip didn't start good, when we arrived at the lobby for our check in they told us there was no room at the Colonial and we would need to go to the Tropical. We were at the Colonial in 2017 and we loved the location. Knowing that we went ahead and booked it. Some people got upgraded to the Palace which is a 5 stars and some at the tropical which is clearly a downgrade. The reception was not receptive at all making any changes. We even tried to upgrade to the newly build Barcelo Riviera Maya which was clearly empty but the price they were asking was outrageous ,160$ US/per night on top of what we already paid. The resort itself is huge but easy to walk if you want to exercise a little bit, having access to the Colonial, Tropical, Beach and Caribe is clearly a plus. Beach: the best beach is in front of the Barcelo Maya Beach and Caribe but you have to be careful for rocks in the water especially when it's windy and you can't see. I strongly suggest bringing water shoes. Room: The Colonial and Tropical rooms are old and moldy in desparate need of an upgrade, last time we were there in April it wasn't as moldy. We felt it was always humid in the room even our bed was disgusting. Service: The service there is always top notch same as what it was before, they are always taking care of you and making sure you're having an awesome vacation. We made sure to tip a lot for when we received a good service which was all the time. We even tipped our omelette guy every day. Food: We were there for 10 days and provided with 7 a la carte restaurants. Our favorites were the Sante Fe, the Tokio, the Kyoto and the italian which were all super delicious and fast. The buffet food can get repetitive but having a different theme every night was good. Food was always delicious and I can hardly understand the people complaining, you should go to a place like Cuba and you'll know what is terrible food. All in all out it was an awesome vacation, but we wouldn't return to the Colonial or Tropical if they are not making any modifications to their rooms. The Barcelo Maya Beach and Caribe seems to be newer and having the best stretch of beach would definitely be the best option. After a bad experience with the check in and seeing people getting an upgrade to the Palace and us it the musty and moldy Tropical room, I'm willing to give the resort another chance but they need to fix some issues.

    “Good but with reservation”

The resort is nice nothing to say about the facilities, the food but I have reservation with customer service. We did not get the type of room we asked for (communicating room) we had to wait until 10 pm to get our baby crib which was on the reservation. When on the kid got sick and throw up in his bed the maid said she could not change both bed sheet because the hotel was full, Being full for a hotel should be good that mean you should be profitable but is this really bad excuse of not supplying the basic services like replacing bed sheet. If you lack personnel or material to supply the services when you are full, it is a management issue! the customer should not suffer for it
