    “5th time at the Palace”

It was our 5th time staying at the Palace Riviera Maya and we were overall please with the stay. It rained the entire time we were in Mexico so we spent a lot of our time sitting in the covered cabana at the adult pool. Our favorite bar tender Jonathan took excellent care of us and had great suggestions on cocktails! He is the main reason we keep coming back!

    “Bad weather, amazing hotel”

By far the best hotel we have visited for a family of five (2 adults, 3 kids under 13). It is a luxurious place with immaculate attention to detail. We thankfully stayed at the Palace, which gave us the ability to use all of the facilities amongst the other 4 neighboring Barcelo resorts. This came in very handy during the 6 day storm that kept us out of the beach and pools! The Buffett’s were not as good as in other all inclusives. For example, the lines were long at the omelette stations, there were no traditional all beef burgers, there was no chicken breast, but only thighs, but overall, there was enough variety to satisfy. The restaurants, on the other hand, were better than in most other hotels we’ve tried. We would definitely go back if only the weather in Cancun hadn’t punished us for the 2nd year in a row. Last, the build up of seaweed along the entire beach became smelly and took away from the beauty of this entire hotel complex!

    “Why go anywhere else?”

Having just returned from the Barcelo Maya after a third visit, I can safely say that it would be difficult not to enjoy yourself there. Staying at the Palace is great because you have access to all of the other resorts and amenities that comprise the Barcelo complex. Moreover, it's not far from Tulum and several excursions, including zip-lining, snorkeling, etc. The dozen-plus eateries delicious (not least of all the French and Brazilian restaurants) and the staff is amazing, especially Alfredo, Estela and Marcos at the Mirador.

“Definitely not a 4 or 5 star hotel.”

This isn’t the hotel you should book if you want to enjoy your stay without nasty alcohol, bad food, bad customer service. They don’t own straws. They only have a buffet for breakfast until 1030 and if you miss that you need to wait until buffet for lunch opens at 12:30. The only thing is that the property is big and there is a lot of restaurants for dinner that you must reserve in advance. The beach is not the typical clear waters of Cancun. Sea weed everywhere, you need a card for a beach towel which makes it so annoying. The alcohol is disgusting! I will never return here.

    “It's all about the money.”

Let me start by saying the resort itself is BEAUTIFUL. The weatherwas not the best but you can’t predict Mother Nature. These are things that we had issues with: (basically any part of the hotel that required you to pay money) 1. When we checked in Jimena was very nice. She helped get us settled in. She told us that we needed to put a $500 deposit for incidentals. We told her that we wanted to pay out with cash (we didn’t want to risk anything happening to our credit card). She told us that was no problem. WRONG. When we checked out, we were told that because we were paying in cash, the rate of currency for peso higher than the USD and so there for my total if paying in cash was $416.00!!! We kept very good track of our spending and with our receipts and the total cost of WIFI our total was $339.00. THERE IS A $77 DIFFERENCE FOR PAYING IN CASH. The clerk at the front desk Kevin was very condensing when talking to us. He would not listen to what we were saying. I asked to speak to his supervisor David, who did absolutely nothing to remedy this situation. Instead, David, the supervisor, stood to the side of Kevin and let Kevin do all the talking. We had to charge the total to the credit card. 2. We signed up for a deep tissue massage at the Palace for $155 each with a 40% off coupon using the price sheet they had there at the Palace (They said had to be used within 24 hours of our arrival). When we get to the spa, their price sheet is completely different. The deep tissue massage was $185. We explained to the clerk there and he could care less. He told us that he didn’t know what we were talking about and that is all he knew. When we got back to the Palace, we spoke to a different representative that acted as if she had no idea what we were talking about. She said couldn’t do anything about it. 3. Excursions: We spoke to Rafael about going to the Coba Ruins. We scheduled that for Wednesday and paid $125.00 each person. We were told to be at the front at 1:15pm so the driver could take us. Wednesday morning comes and it is POURING down and was supposed to rain heavily all day. When we went to speak to Rafael about getting a refund because the rain was so bad, he told us that he couldn’t give us our money back since according to his phone weather app, it wasn’t going to be raining between 4-5pm when we would actually be walking outside at the ruins. In addition, the only way he could give us our money back is if the company cancelled the tour for that day. So we sucked it up and decided to go ahead and just be completely soaked and do the tour. The time comes and we show up at the front as instructed at 1:15pm. We wait, we wait, and wait. At 1:30pm, no one has showed up and surprisingly enough Rafael is nowhere to be found!! At 1:55pm Rafael comes strolling up like nothing and acts surprised when we tell him we have been waiting for our driver. He says, “Oh they cancelled the tour because of the bad weather!” REALLY????? So he just let us sit out there and wait and wait and wait?!?! I demanded a refund and he told us he would have to give us the money the next day. He told me he gets to the office at 8a.m. and asked me to meet him at 830a.m. I arrive at 8:20a.m and Rafael is nowhere to be found. I waited until 9:05a when he finally showed up, with my $645.00. Yes he did make it right, but we had to go through so much! I suggested he tell his future clients that there is no refund because of weather unless the tour company cancels. 4. The day before we were scheduled to leave I went looking for Rafael because I wanted to confirm our pick time for airport transportation. He wasn’t anywhere to be found. So the day we leave I went and waited for him again. He tells me that we are to leave at 9:10a. (it was 8:30a.) He said he told me this no the first day, which he did not.Good thing we were ready. 5. Maid service was WEIRD. On the first night, I was so exhausted and had a headache so while the rest of the party went to explore the resort, I stayed in and at 10:05pm hear a soft knock on the door and it was the maid asking if I needed anything. What is that about? We put our do not clean sign up on Tuesday, but maid service came in anyway. The sign is in Spanish so there is no excuse. 6. There aren’t activities on the resort for the evening. We saw that bowling was $15/USD PER PERSON PER GAME!! Tropical had activities that ended at 4pm—this was like bingo, etc. –We found those activities at 430pm (just my luck). There was a little hidden booth at the Palace that offered game boards and cards, etc. but we didn’t see it until the last night!! BRING YOUR OWN JUST IN CASE you get stuck because of weather. Now all the good stuff: The food was AMAZING! We did have to make reservations on the first day for the French and Brazilian restaurants. The food was AMAZING!!! The buffet has a GREAT selection for everyone even the picky eaters! The “snack” bar was great…it was basically a full meal bar. Wait staff is the best! Make sure to tip them! The pool bars were decent. We caught on and started ordering double shots in our drinks because they were watered down. They bartenders are nice. Scuba diving lessons by Aaron were FUN! Aaron was very nice and patient! I’m not sure we will go back to Barcelo Maya Palace again
