    “Great all-inclusive resort for families!”

Barcelo is a wonderful resort, especially for families! It is beautiful, comfortable, and has everything you need. We were two families traveling together with an 18 month old and 2 four year olds. The kids were thrilled with the kids pool area where they played for hours. The rooms were clean, spacious, and great for families. And the food options were plentiful, and able to accommodate lots of diverse needs. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful.

    “Beautiful grounds, nice staff”

The grounds of all the hotels within this complex are really beautiful, well maintained. The beach was great, though did have some seaweed. The staff were friendly and helpful. When we checked in, the front desk tried to run our debit card for $1000 "to cover incidental expenses." We insisted they not do this, as this was an all-inclusive resort. We also felt that $1000 deposit for a 5 day stay was entirely inappropriate. The front desk staff had to check with the manager on duty to get permission to allow us to check in without a $1000 deposit. We waited for quite a while, and were eventually told we would be allowed to check in. Since we did not provide a $1000 deposit, we were not allowed to order room service, but did not find this to be an issue as there are plenty of places to eat at all hours of the day. When we arrived in our room, I noticed a strange, chemical-like smell. I thought that perhaps the room was musty because the AC had been turned off, so we turned the AC on to cool the room down, and in hopes that the smell would go away. When I woke up the next day, I had a TERRIBLE headache and my sinuses were burning from the smell. We went to the front desk to ask to switch rooms, and they were accommodating. However, they would not have another room until the next day and during a certain time frame. They did send a maintenance man to the room to place a large air freshening tablet in the AC vent to get rid of the smell, but this only served to mask it rather than eliminate it...now instead of one heavy smell, we had two. The next day, we were gone all day on an excursion so could not switch rooms because we missed the time frame. I thought perhaps I could withstand the smell, so continued to stay in the original room. That night, as we were winding down for the evening, I noticed my head was started to pound and my sinuses were bothering me. My husband started to notice the smell, too. He said it smelled like insecticide...and I agreed. We went to sleep, and I felt nauseous the next morning along with a pounding headache and burning sinuses. We went back to the front desk, and they agreed to switch our room but since we missed that opportunity the first day, they would not have another room available for another 24 hours. As we were walking back to our room, we passed a room that was being cleaned and noticed the same odor was coming from that room but not as strong. We then wondered if the cleaning crew were putting some insecticide in their cleaning chemicals to control the bugs?? We had not seen any bugs in the room since arrival, and we had not seen any maintenance men spraying for bugs inside the rooms or outside on the grounds. But we couldn't be sure. We were finally able to switch rooms, and noticed the same exact smell/odor in the new room but not to the same degree as our original room. I continued to wake up with headaches, but they were more manageable. My husband has a cpap machine, and when we returned home he noticed that the insecticide smell had permeated the plastic in his cpap mask so he had to order a new mask. The staff were helpful, and really did try to accommodate us and fix the issue. However, I'm not sure there was really much they could have done. It is still unclear if what we were smelling was truly insecticide, but it sure smelled like it. Other than this, we did enjoy our stay and found everything to be pretty wonderful. I just don't know that we would return for fear we would encounter the same issue.
