“Dinner at Barcelo Maya Palace ”

Mirador buffet, international night was great, amazing meat grilled in front of you, drinks served by David Guzman and his staff, Hermeregildo, Floricel Vazquez, Gerardo Martinez, Brenda Mateo, Estelo, Sergio and Jesus Chimal. It was a top notch dinner experience and service!

    “Family vacation”

Not my best experience in this hotel. The beach was very rocky and you could get hurt very easily on the rocks. There was not much of good beach space, and seaweed was everywhere. Not that good. The pool was great and the children pool was very nice as well. Don't getting a room on the first floor. We initially ordered a room with 2Q beds however upon arrival we were issued a room with 1 K bed than we all had to move the next day to a room that smelled musty, ( doing this all with a small child) this was not fun and it was gross.

    “Barcelo kids club”

I can’t say enough about Sary, Cinthia, and Sara at the Barcelo Maya Beach resort. These ladies were so sweet with my 4 year old. She woke up every day talking about the kids club. We had some great time relaxing in the hammocks, while she happily played close by!

    “First time at a Barcelo”

I was looking for a new resort (to me) to try and my brother mentioned he stayed at the Barcelo Palace 10 years ago and he liked it. Well we all know lots change in 10 years! This is my review: Flew down from Canada with SunWing, my first mistake. Planes are old, uncomfortable and they are always late at least an hour. Avoid them if you can. Finding the driver of the mini bus was pretty easy though because they all wear bright orange shirts. The hour and a half trip to the resort was comfortable. Once at the resort I noticed how beautiful the lobby was and the veranda to the ocean. We were the only couple checking in at that time so things went fairly smoothly. I had asked for a room close to the beach (smart thing to do if you don't want to walk too far to eat and drink) and was told that the room only had two double beds, not the king I asked for. Mistake number two, to keep your wife happy, insist on a king bed! The room was very clean, well made up and fully stocked. Everything worked well and we had plenty of hot water, towels, soap, robes and slippers. The beds were very comfortable and the sheets were silky soft. This is not my first time in Mexico so I'm not easily impressed but I really liked this room. As all rooms, except the beach and pool facing rooms, we had a nice manicured garden view. There is no milk (or coffee mate) with the coffee maker so if you use them in your coffee get a glass of milk from the buffet and keep it in the fridge. I have read some people complain of "ants" in their rooms, these are not ants but very small, harmless fast moving bugs that seem to like the cold flat surface of the counters. No big deal. This is the tropics after all. As for the Palace, it is beautiful. Every inch was spotless and shining, the open air lobby and the veranda overlooking the beach very relaxing. Lobby bar is open 24/7 so you can always get a drink or an espresso along with some munchies. The buffets are large and have a good selection of food but can get really crowded at peak times. My advice is to go to the Coral Grill after 10:30 am and have breakfast or brunch. The buffet is not as extensive but the quality seems to be better and the omelets are made better. You can sit at a table overlooking the ocean and the beach. The bar is fully stocked and they will make you anything you want. Service there is fantastic and it is much more relaxing. The three restaurants on site of the Palace are very good, give them a try. A word on the drinks, the mixed drinks are made with ready made solutions and are sweetened with Stevia, so if you are sensitive to the aftertaste I would pass on those. Make sure you ask for a brand name liquor when ordering a drink as they will give you bar liquor which is not the best. I found my drinks to be well made and strong enough. If you want a good stiff drink ask for a double shot (or especial). They free pour and can get a little less in the glass if they are busy. But I never had a problem. Service can be hit and miss but overall was good. Some staff are exceptional and some could not care in the least. Again when they get busy things are forgotten. There is definitely nobody standing around doing nothing. I noticed most Americans have the tip out for the bartenders as they walk up to the bar so they get the faster service and more attention. Follow their lead if you feel comfortable with that. Tipping is not mandatory but service will be better if you do tip. There is no drink service on the beach at the Palace or the other resorts nearby but that wasn't a big problem, the beach bars are close to the beach. Bring your own insulated cup and get it filled at the bar before going to the beach. There is service around the pools. The pools. Nice pools but not the cleanest, felt a little slimy to me and my wife. People get up at day break, put towels on chairs to save them then may not come back for hours. There are signs all over saying not to do that but nobody cares. The adult only pool was all full every day at 6 am. You can reserve covered beds at the adult pool each day, see the bartender when he shows up. Again you have to be fast to reserve these. The beach chairs are plenty-full and we never had a problem getting some in the shade of a palm tree. Beach lounging is by far the nicest way to go. The beach is long and sandy with a few rocks in certain places. Beach shoes are a must in my opinion. We were swimming with turtle’s right in front of the Palace. This complex is 5 resorts in one huge complex (soon to be 6), so good walking shoes are also a must. There is a double Decker bus that runs about every 15 minutes that takes you to all the resorts. This place is huge, always something to do and see. If you stay at the Palace you have the run of the entire complex including bars and restaurants. Not so if you book the other resorts. I could go on but I will just say the Barcelo Palace will be on my list for next year but I will plan for 10 days or more. P.S. If you can afford the rooms facing the beach I highly recommend booking one, they look spectacular and the service is top notch. P.S. The marble floors can be slippery so if you have any walking impairment there are wheel chairs available. A gentleman who was walking in from of me took a terrible spill after loosing his footing and was badly hurt. Be warned.
