    “Barcelo Tambor tropical retreat”

If you are looking for a holiday retreat that still embodies the unspoiled beauty of Costa Rica, as well as low-key luxury and comfort with good service, try the Barcelo on Tambor Beach in Costa Rica on the Nicoya Peninsula. In comparison with mega-resorts that offer a huge variety of restaurants, amenities and activities, etc., this is a small resort but it boasts many features of the best of the Barcelo hotel/resort chain. We have stayed here many times in the last decade and every time we are nourished by the tranquil tropical gardens and flowers, the restful colonial style suites and rooms, the reasonably good food and service, the relatively small number of guests, and the secluded bay with some waves and beach almond trees providing shade. The resort was renovated in recent years and unfortunately some of the changes were disappointing: they removed the lovely tropical print bedspreads that made the rooms so "exotic"; all of the buildings were repainted in red with white trim while they used to each be different soft tropical shades, the seafood restaurant on the beach closed and a bland Japanese restaurant was opened, the little casino was closed and replaced with a children's game area, and part of the pool was modified to be a kiddy pool with fountain. Direct trails to a "Parque Naturelle" were closed too, cutting off one of the resort's unique features. Dining options are limited to the main buffet, the pool snack bar, the Japanese restaurant, and the beachfront El Rancho Steakhouse (by reservation if you stay several nights). Tambor is rather secluded, so don't look for shopping outside the hotel, or a town immediately outside the gate. Getting to Tambor requires flying to Liberia and then taking a long (interesting) drive plus the ferry across the Gulf; or flying to San Jose, driving a long way, or taking the regional Sansa Air hop to the little airstrip adjacent to the resort. This is an interesting resort as it attracts Americans and some Europeans, and also (mostly) Costa Ricans. The changes in recent years have been in the direction of making it a much more couples, and family- and children-focused resort. But we still love the gardens and the bird life. Every day around 4 pm you can set your watch to it: flocks of free, wild scarlet macaws fly into the large trees at the resort. There is a macaw breeding and release program adjacent to the resort and many of the birds one sees were bred and released from the facility. You can also see brown pelicans, roseate spoonbills, tiger herons, sanderlings, magnificent frigate birds, green parakeets, and bananaquits here. If you love bird life and tropical environments, and you are not looking for noisy nightlife and large crowds, sample the "pura vida" still available at Tambor.

    “Family celebration”

We left home early in the morning to take the Ferry to Paquera, then drove to the hotel, to find a very beautiful place, very delicious food, nice snacks and great outdoor activities. I saw some of the bad reviews the hotel had, mostly related to the employees, I can honestly say they are all very friendly! The room was good, enough to accommodate a family of 4. Lots of things to do.

    “Nothing special”

It's decent if you want to lay by the pool. The beach in front of the resort isn't one you'll want to swim at. The food was average, nothing special. There's not much to do near the hotel besides golf. I went to escape from the city and relax and it was perfect for that, but I wouldn't go for any other reason.

Jonathan M, Revenue Manager at Barcelo Tambor, responded to this review

“Low class local hangout hotel with terrible food.”

We were expecting something really nice based on the reviews and fotos. Te property itself is pretty nice, half the staff are very pleasant, the other half are rather mean and vulgar. Like jekal and hyde depending on the hour. The main guests there are locals (lower middle income) who probably get really cheap rates and kind of trashy. Trashy, meaning the leave trash everywhere. The food for lunch and dinner is a Re-hash of the same. The locals don't use the serving utensils for the buffete and like to dig right in with their fingers and if they don't like it, they drop it half eaten back into the serving trays. Disgusting is the proper word and witnessed it on several ocasiones. The snack area and hamburgers are the awesome and the only redeeming quality for food. The blackish sand beach and pool areas are nicely kept and security is tight to keep the non paying locals from invading. I would say if it weren't for the terrible and unsanitary food and the low class locals this place has potential. To sum it up. If you could get it for $50-70 a night per person and have dinner outside the property It would be worth it and probably about what the locals paid. Otherwise, I would move on to better resort. At $140 a night, it's a terrible deal. And charging $12 for a few hours of 1mb Wifi is rediculous.
