    “One night stay”

We stayed here the night before we flew out of Costa Rica to return home. The hotel was nice, the pool lovely (a bit chilly) and the buffet (especially the breakfast) was delicious. The transfer to the airport went seamlessly and everyone was professional and kind. My only real complaint is that we had requested a crib for my son in our reservation and did not receive one. When I asked, all the cribs were taken at that point. Our sleep was a bit uncomfortable by that night due to the sleeping arrangements. I would like to return at a different time for a longer period of time.

“Outstanding hotel with minor recommendations for improvement”

We love Costa Rica, and this is our third trip. We chose to spend 2 nights in San Jose for one reason: to take my son to a La Liga futbol game. So we came here with the expectation of the hotel being an oasis in the pretty dirty and disappointing city of San Jose. We were in the mood for something classy, with a nice pool. Hotel Barcelo nailed it -- in spades. I have, however, listed below several areas of improvement below, which I encourage hotel staff to review. But first, I'll begin with the great things about Hotel Barcelo. The accolades: The building is gorgeous, as are the pool and gardens. The lobby is pure class. Our room was tasteful, with a surprisingly large number of amenities in the bathroom, including a shaving kit, a dental kit, and the list goes on. Our room faced the national stadium, which was an unexpected nice (and interesting!) view, including a backdrop of mountains. The gym is one of the best hotel exercise facilities I've ever experienced, and in addition to plenty of cardio machines, it includes a large amount of free weights, a bench press, and a jacuzzi. The hotel staff were very friendly/helpful, and while my wife speaks fluent Spanish, all lobby staff is also fluent in English, which was helpful for me, with my limited Spanish. The free breakfast buffet is quite possibly the biggest and classiest you'll likely ever see. Many have written about it on TripAdvisor so I won't go into detail, but it was absolutely fab and sprawling, In addition to a terrific assortment of fresh fruit, pastries, juices, french toast, etc., it also includes a wonderful omelette bar. The buffet room, like the rest of the hotel, is gorgeous. Where there is room for improvement at Hotel Barcelo: Pool: too cold. They need to increase it 10 degrees F. Everyone we spoke to at the pool felt the same way. While I do enjoy a cool-temperature pool, this was something entirely too chilly. Pool area: The pool area is gorgeous, with a beautifully curved pool and wonderful hammocks and lounge chairs that line the pool. However, hotel staff should more regularly walk the pool area and clean up abandoned cups, bottles, and spilled drinks. (Overall, used glasses and bottles tend to accumulate in the pool area throughout the day. When we arrived on a Saturday afternoon, there was a spilled fruit drink in the hammock area. And it was gross. Hours later, when we returned, it was still there. Not classy, yet so easy to remedy.) Dinner buffet restaurant: this is the same room used for the breakfast buffet. At $30 (US) per person ($15 for kids) for dinner, this is a very expensive buffet and, quite frankly, did not live up to the asking price. The food was not particularly great, and the dessert pastries were at least one day old. My recommendation: change the price to $20/person, $10/child, fix the dessert pastry issue, and I could recommend the dinner buffet. Room service: We also ordered room service one evening. We were disappointed with our three dinners (a typical Costa Rican platter, a grilled chicken breast on vegetables with white sauce, and a BLT). Perhaps if they had made a greater effort to deliver it while it was still warm, that might have made some difference, but I cannot be sure. FYI: Your other dining options in the hotel are the Japanese restaurant (which looks very classy) and the grill adjacent to the pool. We did not try either of these. You will need to take a taxi to find other dining options, because the hotel is isolated. In conclusion, GREAT hotel experience. Small areas for improvement (as listed above, in hopes that the hotel will read this review and correct those issues). I hope you find my humble review to be helpful.

    “Great value”

Breakfast included in our room rate was amazing. Buffett style but huge variety. The hotel provides a free shuttle bus to and from the airport. It leaves the hotel on the hour and leaves from the airport on the half hour. Recommend using this rather than local taxis who tried hard to rip us off despite being metered. Very comfortable and friendly staff. Would stay again.

“Decent option to have a little get away while in San José”

The Barcelo San José is a hotel that while well preserved is showing it's age in building structure, by no means I'm saying is not a nice place, it just dated. I was treated nicely, upgraded to the 6th floor at a very good nightly rate considering that we are in high season. If you get a room in the 6th floor you can choose to pay $30 per person per day to get unlimited hot and cold snacks and beverages (from 5am to 10 pm) as well as alcohol starting at 7pm until 10 pm and private check in and out, only restriction is that you can't take the food and beverages out of the premium area of the 6th floor. Also included with the daily rate you get a decent buffet breakfast, continental and Costa Rican options offered. All the staff is usually very nice and helpful, swimming pool is big enough and has a kids area. If you pay for the silver package, you get to eat unlimited snacks (pizza, nachos, etc.) and non-alcoholic drinks as well as national beers. Very good for a quick get away. Not a premium but very nice experience.

    “Nice hotel”

This hotel was very clean and the room spacious. The breakfast buffet was amazing with so many choices and everything was fresh. The pool was pretty with zero entry, bar/restaurant, small lazy river and hammocks. There was also a small, but charming and well maintained garden area. The hotel is a quick $5 Uber ride from central San Jose, about 3 km. The views of the mountains were pretty from the upper floors.
