“Good hotel in an excellent location”

This is more of a Costa Rican hotel than the typical Occidental or Barcelo (it's part of the latter group). It's located on Langosta Beach more or less at the end of the road and very quiet. The beach is decent and there is a river mouth. You can see crocodiles, monkeys and lots of birds. Good for surfing too. The gardens are expansive and lovely and it has attained the highest sustainability level (5). The spa is nice and I enjoyed a lovely massage outdoors. It's a bit dated and some maintenance is needed. My patio door was hard to open and there were minor problems with the bathroom. The entertainment staff could be a little better. They know their stuff but seem a bit lazy, with activities starting late consistently. Internet needs to improved (had to log back in every few minutes). All the staff are ver nice. Estfenia (marketing person) and Argerie (wedding coordinator who seems to work 24/7) are wonderful. The bartender at the Rancho Bar, Carlos, is a gem too. Overall a wonderful experience. Thanks to all.

“Good hotel off the beaten path.”

The hotel is not down town its off the beaten path about 3 km away from all of the action. This means its a $5 taxi fare to the action, which isn't a problem we went in May so it was the slow season. The hotel grounds were peaceful until about 9pm when the entertainment started up near the ala cart restaurant that would go on until about 1am or so. If you were Spanish speaking then you would be able to understand the language to enjoy it even more. Building 4 area is right across from this action so don't sleep here if you can't handle the entertainment. On another note the wild life can be found in the trees and on the side walk nothing dangerous. We brought our own alcohol from Duty Free and didn't really drink any of the drinks there but they were easily accessible at the pool bar and upstairs in lobby as well. It was pretty hard to get change around there without buying something so if you can get change as early as you can. I had $400 in 20 dollar bills. So the food could be redondant however its a great value. The grill would be doing steak and sausage for lunch and dinner or fajitas as well. I loved the breakfast with pancakes French toast omelets and much more. Everyone of the service providers were awesome as well. Pool closes early nightly, Beach behind resort was not a real swimming beach it was surfers and volcanic rock their is sand beach shore there as well its just not like down town beach at all. very high rough tides as well. I enjoyed walking it still. Would I come back to this property Yes in a heart beat. Very Very Safe! I went down town and got with some guys on the beach selling tours on blue dolphin which was on 85 per person from 1-6 on the ocean food, drinks, and snorkel provided. I also did a 5 beach tour on ATV with snorkel for only 65 per person as well with IVAN. I enjoyed some great desert down town as well. The Ala Cart resturaunt is only open on the weekend so keep that in mind that food there was very very good! Bottles of wine for $22. The shopping store inside the hotel is well overpriced as to be expected at any resort I'm guessing. This wasn't a tourist full resort as well it was a hotel mixed with locals as well. If you want to have an option to go follow the crowd but lay down away from it this is the place to be. I forgot to mention it was full of security rotating at all entrance and exit points.

    “Costa Rican Style Resort”

If you want a Costa Rican style resort experience, and I mean one that's geared towards locals, then stay at Occidental Tamarindo. Our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 young kids) stayed here in early April. We arrived during the onset of Easter week, which was probably why the resort was quite busy with many locals visiting. The resort is fairly small in comparison to the other Occidental and Barcelo branded resorts we've been to. So, don't expect your typical "Cancun-resort" like experience that is geared towards Americans. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our stay and experience. Our family enjoyed the beach, which is actually a surfing beach (Playa Langosta), the activities (dancing, pool activities, kids activities), and the nightly entertainment. We were actually amazed at how talented the dancers/entertainers were during their evening shows. There was only one pool area, but my kids loved it. As for the food, the buffet was decent as was their one restaurant. They even had a BBQ for lunch one day. The snack bar can be skipped. I really enjoyed the coffee (brewed just right). They had delicious pina coladas at the restaurant (pool ones were watered down with a weird pina colada mix). Our room was like any standard hotel room. It had two full beds and a full bath. Nothing to complain about here. We had good nights of sleep. You can walk to Tamarindo town in 20 minutes. We decided to just take the local bus which really looks like a tour bus ($1USD per person) or taxi ($5 each way). The hotel is actually located by Playa Langosta and not Playa Tamarindo, and in what seems like a residential area full of newly built homes. So, if you want to book external activities, I'd advise booking in Tamarindo town (go to Sol Naciente and surrounding areas to inquire about deals) or do some online research. Overall, we would stay here again! This resort I'm sure left a lasting impression and experience with my kids as it did us on how the locals enjoy their vacation at a resort in their country.

    “Alright hotel, beautiful beach”

This was our first all inclusive experience. Our room had water leaking from the light fixture and our bed was broken upon arrival- both were dealt with quickly from staff. The hotel seemed very busy, loud and seemed to suffer with some uncleanliness in the common areas. We also found the a la carte restaurant difficult to access and were actually unable to make a reservation before leaving. Despite the resort, we really enjoyed the chance to sit on the BEAUTIFUL volcanic beach outside of the resort while sipping on "free" drinks. It was also a nice place to unwind after a busy day of tours.

We will be working all the year to improve the place everyday so next you visite us, the experience may be perfect. Have a nice weekend. Your sincerely. Alvaro Fontenla. General Manager. “Nice Hotel”

My girlfriend and I wanted to stay in Tamarindo without worrying about food drinks etc so we decided to stay here. The rooms were a little outdated but clean. No wifi in any of the rooms. Pool was very clean as well as the restaurant and bar by the pool. There were not many snacks besides the fried food. The staff was not very friendly often ignoring us. The receptionist that was peruvian he worked at night was awesome. He would tell us were the fun spots in town were and would call us taxis and give us their numbers. In tamarindo there is no "official" taxi service. The beach at the resort was a little rocky in some spots but great views of the sunsets. The entertainment is lacking a bit, defiantly could use improvement.
