    I am a great believer in "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR." That is not what we got.!! Anyone who thinks this is a 5 or 4 star resort probably has not been to one. Now on the bright side, the beach is beautiful, the grounds are lovely and the lobby area is very nice. You get 2 meals a week in the restaurants and the rest of your meals are at the buffet or beach bar at noon. The food at the resort is poor and I am comparing that to other Cuban resorts. Thank heavens the resort is close to Varadero as you can easily get good food and great music not far down the road. Our room maid was excellent, a few of the bartenders were friendly (we did tip), and many of the front desk staff were down right grumpy. I really wanted to ask them who had peed in their cornflakes that morning. Now the first room they gave us was something out of a horror show with no way to shut off the air conditioning, no tv remote, no hair dryer, only one working plug, no bath towels and a digusting bathroom, just what you get in a 4 star hotel!! It is the first time in my life I have asked for a room change. The next room was fine. We saw many people asking for room changes. But guess what, we did not let our disappointment with this resort ruin our holiday, however, if you have not booked a hotel you can get much better ones for roughly the same price. The next time I will not believe all the good reviews I read on Trip Advisor.

While I respect and acknowledge your post regarding our hotel, I also want to submit my opinion that i don't believe your review reflects an overall accurate and fair review. Our Customer Service team is very efficient and this is highly acknowledged by every person who has visited our Resort. Perhaps, if you would have contacted us, we could have assisted you with your concerns. However, we would also like to point out that we are aware that some of our rooms are starting to show some signs of age and for this reason we are currently in the process of gradually refurbishing our hotel. I'm very confident that we offer very clean and comfortable guest rooms or a new bungalows, reasonably priced in Varadero, in a great location, with a team of associates that really care about the guest experience. The warmth and hospitality are characteristics that distinguish the Cubans par excellence, we are sure to erase any negative image that you may have taken from our Resort. While I definitely respect and want to hear your opinions and perceptions. Hotel Barceló Solymar might have been the the most expensive hotel you stayed in during your trip, but I suspect you didn't really research other hotel options in the Varadero area. If you did, you would know that Hotel Barceló Solymar Resort's pricing represents a considerable value for a stay in our world class destination. Here at Barceló Solymar - Occidental Arenas Blancas - Allegro Palma Real Resort we work with many different customer nationalities, and our gastronomical offer it's made to satisfy everyone. I´m sorry the gastronomic offer disappointed you somehow. We actually have a huge and wide selection, either in our themed buffets and "a la carta" restaurants. We will of course keep your comments in mind in order to improve our service and gastronomic selection and adapt it to all our guests’ preferences. We don´t have your opinion about our "a la carta" restaurants. Why? It's strange. The hotel where you have stayed belongs to a Resort of 3 hotels (Barceló Solymar, Occidental Arenas Blancas and Allegro Palma Real). Our customers at Barceló Solymar have the possibility to enjoy all the services and facilities. I would challenge you to find another hotel in Varadero that has our great central location, 2 Hotels per one: 2 Buffets, 5 "A la carta" Restaurants, Ranchón Playa, Barbaque (at Seafood Terraze), 8 Bars... offered at our rates. Actually in high season, our Resort it´s full, so each "a la carta" restaurant - it´s open 6 days per week. One day off. The conditions for the reservations are: 1 or 2 nights - Ask availability 3 nights - 1 option Between 4 to 8 nights - 2 options Between 9 to 13 nights - 3 options Between 14 or more - 4 or 5 options. With our objective of providing an excellent and personalized service in each of our "a la carta" restaurants, these have a maximum of clients allowed per day. We are sorry, if you loos like have not been able to enjoy any of them. Howewer, we are surprise because we don´t have any complaint about that, in our Customer Service or the Management. Of course, we can help or deal with any customer´s issue if we are advised on time. We are going through an important refurbishing process of our facilities with the objective of improving even more our image and continue with the clients´ preference. The fact is you won't find any similar accommodations that are priced close to our price points. However, we are not comparable to the more modern brand style hotels that you might be accustomed to. That is very unfortunate and I'm sorry that was the case as we always want our guests to feel their experience with us was a positive one. It is our hope that you enjoyed visiting Varadero, our nice environment, the weather, the beach, trips, shopping and restaurants our destination has to offer. I am truly sorry you had a bad experience while staying with us. I will forward your comments to each departaments to make sure this does not happen again.     “AMAZING TRIP/STAY”

    I just returned from Cuba last weekend, it was my second time in Varadero and WOW- I already am planning to go back later this year!! The Barcelo Solymar is an excellent choice for accommodations in Varadero. The location is fantastic as it is very central to downtown Varadero, 5 minute walk from the Beatles Bar and the main strip. The hotel is so clean and very visually appealing. The staff are incredible!! I love the Cuban people, they are so warm and welcoming. The pool bar staff really made the trip! Rico, Lala, Miguel- Beautiful, amazing people. The food was pretty decent compared to most resorts in the area! I ate very healthy while I was there. It was an unreal trip, I will return to Cuba again and again. Thank you Barcelo Solymar for your outstanding customer service and hospitality!! :) 10/10 would recommend to anyone

    “A wondeful hotel for a certain type of traveller; which explains the variation in reviews”

    You may be reading the reviews and wondering how there can be so many reviews that are dramatically different from each other .... I believe the answer lies in what type of traveller you are; so instead of reviewing the hotel, I am going to make a recommendation of whether this hotel will suit you! Beach. First of all, if you prioritise a quality of the beach above all other critieria - then this hotel may work for you. The beach is stunning - I have been to many of the world’s most acclaimed beaches and Varadero is up there with the best. Miles of powdery white sand, crystal clear and warm water, a generous amount of loungers and umbrellas for guests etc. Hotel room standard. Cuba is a developing country; it is not a first world fully developed nation and the standards in this hotel reflect that. The rooms are tired, cleaning is sub-par, yes there are stains on the duvet (and we literally found a soiled diaper in one of the kitchen cupboards). Yes there are ants on the floor, holes in the walls etc. So if you need a perfectly clean room to have a good time, or plans to spend a lot of time in your room - this hotel may not be for you (and you should probably choose another travel destination). We only slept in the room so didnt mind the issues - because we spent our days at the beach! Food. Given how limited supplies are in Cuba and how difficult it is to access fresh food, beef etc we thought the food was terrific within the context. Always lovely fresh fruit on offer, lovely service, lots of variety etc. Again, if you expect Cuba to offer ‘world class’ cuisine which is similar to developed nations - Cuba may not be the destination for you. Internet. I have noticed complaints about internet access, which again I attribute to people not understanding the context. This isn’t a resort issue, it is a whole of country issue; nobody has good access to the internet and Cubans must also buy the cards and find a wifi spot to use them. The cards at the resort were cheaper than most options in Havana and the wifi was excellent in the foyer. Again, if you can’t live without constant wifi access in your room and on the beach ... maybe don’t visit Cuba. Grounds and surrounds. Gorgeous! Perfect pool area, super clean and impeccable gardens - five stars All inclusive. We loved the all inclusive package and certainly availed ourselves of the included drinks - which were excellent. Yes the small plastic cups were annoying but the bar staff are amazing and generous and the drinks excellent (for an all inclusive package). In summary, if you are the type of person who visits a developing country and expects it to be on par with developed countries in terms of food, decor, wifi etc then maybe don’t visit Cuba at all. If you are a flexible, easy going traveller who appreciates other cultures, loves the beach and are happy with free drinks - then this resort will work well for you. This resort worked very well for us as a fun group of friends (in our 40s) who loves the beach and drinking :-) We did not want to leave (ever!). Being within a 5 minute walk from Calle 62 or shopping, bars ("Beatles" Bar) and restaurants all within walking distance. Rooms or bungalows are perfect for a families, friends or couples. All of our rooms do indeed come with the usual items you would expect i.e. hairdryer, iron, mini-bar and coffee. Our guest relations team are here from 9am to 9pm every day, after which time our duty manager / security team take over. They are here to look after our guests during the night and are on stand by to assist you or answer any questions you may have. Finally I would like to thank you for pointing out the things that you did enjoy: our amazing staff, room, restaurants & buffets, our entertaiment and how well you found the Resort ("In summary, if you are the type of person who visits a developing country and expects it to be on par with developed countries in terms of food, decor, wifi etc then maybe don’t visit Cuba at all.     “Sister resort”

    I stay at Arenas Blancas. It was a truly amazing experience. Love it! The food was different, not bad but different but I ended up eating healthier than I do at home. it was not luxury 5* but people were amazing and everything was clean and the beach was out of this world.

    This resort is quite average in terms of overall quality, food, rooms, etc. However, I am ranking 4/5 because of the great environment and the amount of fun I had when I visited. Don’t book this resort with a high expectation but to meet people and have fun.

    This resort is quite average in terms of overall quality, food, rooms, etc. However, I am ranking 4/5 because of the great environment and the amount of fun I had when I visited. Don’t book this resort with a high expectation but to meet people and have fun.
