    “Great experience”

My wife is a teacher, so we travelled during school March Break (Mar 11-18). Stayed as a couple in the Adults Only section of this huge resort. I was surprised at how big the rooms are, and due to the angling of the rooms, most of them have a view of the ocean, which is normally an upgrade at other resorts. The beds, pillows and bedding were also much more upscale than we've had at other resorts in the Dominican, Cuba and Mexico. Very comfortable. We were also impressed by the staff, who treated everyone like royalty. From the multitude of servers bringing drinks by the pool, to the restaurant staff who catered to every need. Always with smiles on their faces and highly efficient. Tipping was not expected, although we did tip sometimes around the pool. Normally, the servers just drop off drinks and walk away without ever expecting a tip, so you must be quick to give them a tip. I think this shows a lot of class, and that it is just the normal level of high service provided by the hotel. We did walk over to the non-adult section next door, which was flowing with kids during school break, and was very crowded and noisy in comparison. Mind you, the shows are spectacular. I've never seen such high quality and professional productions provided at a Caribbean resort before. These are professional dancers, not members of the animation team putting on shows. The adults-only section had smaller versions of the same shows, just as good, but for the full experience I highly recommend going next door for the shows every night. Food was better than expected. Great variety, and very tasty. I like that the buffet area is in a contained area with walls, and only the seating area is in an area with no walls. No flies/insects to worry about, unlike at other resorts. Everything is very clean, well prepared, and well presented. No line-ups for food at any of the stations that prepare stir fry, pasta, omelettes, etc. Unlike at the resort next door, where there are lineups everywhere, for essentially the same food. We booked one restaurant during our stay, the Kyoto Japanese restaurant. It was an additional $15 per person charge, but the food is cooked in front of you, and is of excellent quality, with great entertainment. I would definitely do it again. We also used the Spa next door to go through their hydrotherapy pools. One visit was complementary with our stay in the Adults Only section. It was a fun experience going from the sauna, to the 4 different showers with varied temperatures, to the steam bath, to the ice-cold pool, to the hot tub, to the private outdoor pool. Felt like quite a workout. The beach and sand is amazing. The large reef that can be seen in the distance protects the bay from big waves, so there are no riptides, no real waves, which makes it pleasant and warm for swimming. My only complaint is the view, since there are several structures built into the ocean for some of the excursions to stop at to visit dolphins, sharks, stingrays, etc. Lots of boats going by as well, since they moor just next door. I didn't mind the boats going by and playing their music, as it gave it a more tropical feel. Not everyone would agree. No vendors on the beach, which also surprised us, but there is a row of shops on the beach next door, where the vendors are more than happy to harass you to come take a look. We went on one excursion, which was the Seaquarium excursion to do "sea trekking". That involved putting on a helmet with an air hose and walking 20 feet down on the ocean floor to experience the fish and coral. A very unique experience and definitely the highlight of our trip. We've done the catamaran and snorkeling trip to Samana Island before, and I would recommend that one as well for anyone who hasn't done it before. But the sea trekking is going to stick in my memory for a long time. Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel, specifically the Adults Only section. I would not hesitate to return, although I don't think I would stay in the non-adults section, simply because it seemed too crowded for my liking, but the extra amenities make it great to have next door.

    “Wonderful Vacation”

Visited for one week with my sister. Staff at check-in desk and in service area were great. Julio de la Cruz was terrific - helped with reservations, ad-hoc Spanish lessons, and questions we had - he was very pleasant and extremely helpful. Asked for an upper floor room but received one on the bottom floor which turned out to be a blessing in disguise. In addition to the patio table and two chairs, we had an additional two loungers and sitting outside was very pleasant because it felt like we had a huge 'yard' to enjoy. The room was really nice, the beds very comfortable. Bus system between the two resorts was good - never had to wait too long. Beautiful beach - yes there was seaweed but it is soft seaweed and easy enough to avoid. The water was warm and it was so nice to just float. The weather was beautiful all week so we were in the water every day. Had no issues with sand fleas or sand crabs whatsoever and only saw a couple of mosquitos the whole time. Perhaps it is because of the time of year we visited. The shows were mostly entertaining. The circus show was our favourite - two of the performers were phenomenal. Our second favourite was the Burlesque show - definitely a show you would only see at an adult-only resort. Drinks were good - I particularly enjoyed the Pina Bavarro - a Pina Colado with a banana added in. We did one excursion - the Sea Walk. The snorkeling in all enclosed in 'gated' areas so not great but fine. It was a decent excursion to do. The restaurants - we had 6 a la carte meals. Our rankings starting with our favourite: 1.La Fuente 2.La Brisa 3.Chez Gourmet 4.La Comedie 5.Santa Fe (the appetizers and dessert were buffet style) 6.Le Coral (the appetizers and dessert were buffet style) There was a $45US surcharge for La Comedie for the two of us. I personally don't think it was worth it given the high quality of the buffet restaurants but it did allow us an additional a la carte restaurant. It may have been worth it had I ordered differently - I ordered the Lobster Thermidor which was just okay (but I'm used to lobster from Atlantic Canada). My sister had the Chateaubriand which was excellent. The buffet restaurants were very good - El Caribe and La Brisa (buffet for breakfast and lunch only). At El Caribe there was always a chef's special to choose and it didn't disappoint. We also bused over to have breakfast at Hoya 19. It was good, nice to have an a la carte breakfast. The one negative would be the maid. We returned to the room to find the tip which was left in the bathroom (two $1US bills) laid out on the bed. Thought she must have simply forgotten them. She was doing another room so I tried to give her the tip. She was very indignant because one of the bills had a corner torn off - a very small corner and the other bill had a very, very slight tear. I found another bill that wasn't torn and she 'traded' that for the bill that had the small corner missing. She did not seem to be appreciative of the tip whatsoever. It made me question whether I should bother tipping the maids but did continue do so for the remainder of the trip. Overall, we had an amazing vacation and I would highly recommend this resort.
