“Good from afar but far from good...”

Our family of three stayed at the Occidental Caribe from February 12 to February 19th, 2017. We chose this hotel as it checked off most of the things we look for in an all-inclusive property such as being close to the airport, right on the beach, an opportunity to upgrade once on-site, a casino, a cappuccino/coffee bar, pool bar, small shops, buffet and a la carte options and some nightly entertainment. While the Occidental Caribe does offer these things and more, the property loses our vote to return because of all the small details missing that make a trip special. I would imagine at some point in it's history, this location would knock your socks off but over the years, she has become old, worn out and tired. It is my hope that under the new Occidental chain, this hotel will be restored. It is my understanding that in November 2016 it changed from the Barceló. Our personal challenges on our trip are as follows: The check-in process was outrageous - it took over 2 hours to receive our room and when we did, we were disappointed. We were taken to room 3406 which had a stunning view that overlooked the quiet pool and ocean but the overpowering stench of mildew once the door was opened was too much to bear. We declined the room and the instantly upset porter stomped off and we made our way back to the lobby only to get back in the line that hadn't seem to move. Rene, who had originally checked us in, saw us and would absolutely not make eye contact despite his cheerful demeanor just minutes before. In fact, he moved to a different part of the long counter to help others or dipped into the back room to avoid us as he had given us his personal guarantee that we would love the room. When it was our turn to step back to the counter, we asked to speak to the manager to make a room switch due to health reasons (one traveller has asthma). We spoke to Samuel who agreed to make the room switch to 7114. When we got to the new room, I will say it was much bigger than the previous one but this is where we really started to notice that things were worn out and tired. There were two bathrooms and both toilets had issues. One didn't flush well and the other ran all night. The bidet was broken, the clothesline in the tub was busted, the door into the bathroom was knocked off it's hinges, the sofa and chairs were so old and saggy the only we would dare sit on them was to put sheets over them, the patio windows were so scratched up you could barely see out and the most worrisome of it all, both patio doors locks were broken. It took leaving a public post to the manager on the Trip Advisor website to get it fixed because the 4 times prior to, the repairman would arrive and replace broken parts with more broken parts. It turns out, the whole door had to be taken apart and the actual repair was over an hour to complete. Having said that, the next folks in that room should experience smooth sailing as we had everything fixed prior to leaving :) There seems to be a dampness problem in all areas of this property. Although the new room didn't smell as bad, when we would get into bed at night, the bedding was damp and clammy. We know other guests were experiencing the same issue as you could see pillows and bedding out on many balconies to help dry things out during the day. We didn't experience issues with the room otherwise - we had a nice maid who always had our room clean and tidy and the small fridge stocked with mini beers, pop and water daily. Now on to food. The buffet is huge yet despite its size, the three of us, who are not picky eaters, struggled to come up with much more than pasta from the pasta bar. Yes, there is a bread, soup, meat, cheese and fresh fruit bar, main dishes and so forth but it all seemed recycled. The service was non-existent (no water, drinks, plate clearing) and the floor was so greasy. In the morning, we would gravitate towards the omelette bar and make toast in the Panini press. It wasn't until the third day that we felt like we hit the jackpot when we found that out at the pool bar where in the day they serve hamburgers, there is also a breakfast set up. It was heavenly to sit at the ocean and have an omelette made with care, not just slapped together. We typically had lunch at the pool bar where there is a small buffet and grill that serves hamburgers, hotdogs, fries and if you get lucky, chicken wings! The best place for lunch though, is the pizzeria that is upstairs from the pool. It's tucked away but is worth finding. The view of the beach is spectacular and the pizza is made fresh to order. As for the a la carte restaurants, we tried the Italian, Seafood, Mexican and Japanese. Hands down the Japanese was our favourite although it was very loud in there with all the yelling, clanging and banging. Somehow they found out we had a birthday that day, and made a special effort to present a cake. It was a nice touch and thanks to the staff for that. There is cappuccino machine at both lobby bars and it was hot and tasty. You can get it to go or in china cups if you are staying in the lobby. We venture to the casino a few nights and found the only reliable gaming was the roulette table. The slot machines wouldn't allow a max bet and there was always a commotion at the poker table about etiquette and rules that seem to swing in favour of the house. It is one place you can get free wifi but it is intermittent at best and is only available to those over 18. A good tip... you can pick up free wifi from the Royalton if you stand by the surf shack or the Riu if you are by the Mexican restaurant. The beach is stunning with lots of chairs, palm trees and clean, soft sand. There isn't a bar right on the beach but its not that far to walk. We brought our bubba's and found that worked well. We would like to caution that there are huge waves, even with a yellow flag and never turn your back on this part of the ocean. It can be a lot of fun but needs to be enjoyed with respect at all times. This isn't a gently sloping beach where children should play as the waves come very far up and recede very fast. The best spot for kids and less confident swimmers is definitely in the pool. And now the pool... there are many pools at this resort but the one with the bar is where we spent our time. The foam party on Saturday afternoon was so fun but the entire time, there were small kids in the pool and getting lost in the foam. I found this very dangerous and something the hotel management is going to have to do better with as it put people in danger. Yes, kids are their parent's responsibility but that doesn't really fly when bad things happen. Kids, copious amounts of booze and 5+ feet deep foam in our opinion does not mix. Why not have a kid's foam party in the kid's pool? Easy and safe solution. Just an observation... The pool bar staff are kept very busy yet not a lot of people get out of the pool. There also doesn't seem to be anyone being cut off which would explain all the puking going on, around and on the pool deck. More than a few times, we watched loaded people being taken away in wheel chairs. And everyone gets out of the pool with the soles of their feet blue from the paint. There are a few small shops that sell souvenirs and some basic things should you run out or forgot something. We didn't go to the gym or try any of the spa services - we weren't overly impressed with the general cleanliness of things in the open so didn't want to chance a dirty pedicure. The bank machine was not in service for our entire stay and were told it would be fixed on 20FEB2017. We did find a working bank machine next door at the Royalton but it only dispensed Dominican pesos. For a rate of 25% and showing your passport, you could change RD to USD but felt that was steep. There is not a drop of hand sanitizer on this property and we'd suggest you carry it everywhere. 2 of the 3 of us have come home so sick and feel partly to blame is the burning of garbage that happens nightly at this resort. When the one night we awoke to acrid smoke filling our room and then it happened two more times, none of the employees knew what we were talking about. It was other guests that told us that it is the hotel burning garbage and I did see it referred to in other reviews. For anyone who has witnessed a car fire, this is what smells like. Despite all this, we did manage to have fun once we realized we shouldn't look at anything too close and take it for what it was. All these hassles and lack of attention to detail are what is keeping this property from being top notch. We are open to questions if you have any.

    “Wonderful Vacation”

From the time we arrived to the time we left, we didn't have a single issue or problem. Check in took some time, however, while we were wating in line, we were offered drinks. The Beach here is amazing- powder soft sand. It was hard to get towlels- they always seemed to be out- but I had heard this and we did bring our own beach towels. The service. from the bartenders to the maids was outstanding. I have never been to a hotel- resort, unitl now, where the people were so friendly. They were always eager to help. We did a couple of excursions, and the guides were also very friendly and helpful. One thing I want to mention is that were were booked for a double room, and when checking in, I asked for a king size bed, and we got it- no problem

But we totally loved this resort... so much so we plan on returning. Like most people we read the good and bad reviews and chose to give it a go...and glad we did. No major problems. Other than no beer in the room...but I think that depends on what you book. No big deal. We had a favourite bar tender everywhere..we enjoyed the saxophone in the evenings. The beach is absolutely gorgeous... love love love that. The resort looks quite large but is actually easy to navigate and get around. The entertainment both in the daytime and nights were great. We were sad to leave the first time and are looking forward to returning again soon

    “Excellent Resort!”

When we arrive we were greeted by Jose Cavidsco, who took our bags got my GF and I a couple drinks and even brought us up to our room. He really helped us kick off a great week! Jose was very helpful with helping us with the layout of the resort. The staff is excellent and very friendly. The grounds are well maintained, the beach is beautiful! The buffet and restaurants have plenty of options around the clock. We stayed in February 2017 and we would definitely go back to this resort for another stay.

“Nice resort not so great room.”

We arrived around 3pm and it was hot, we were disappointed that we were not greeted with a welcome drink. There was a waitress bringing drinks, but it was very slow so we went and got our own from the bar. Was a long wait to check in and we asked if we would be able to upgrade our rooms. She responded no were 100% full. She told us our luggage would be brought to our rooms, so we went ahead to find our rooms. Was disappointed to find out since being one number apart. We found that my room was on the other side of the storage cupboard and there was no way to get there but go around the courtyard. This storage cupboard had a metal gate on it that was very loud, screechy and banged around lots, which we heard all times of day including the middle of the night. The worst time was first thing in the morning 6:30-7am when the cleaning staff gathered out side our room and was impossible to sleep through, plus there were constant carts going by our room. Rooms very outdated and musty smelling but, the first thing we noticed in both our rooms the safes were both broken. I called the front desk to send someone to fix the safe and waited well over an hour for someone to come. Meanwhile we sent out kids to get our luggage that never showed up, it was still sitting in the lobby. So once all of this was finished around 6pm, the pool was closing and we barley made it to the beach to see the sunset that evening. The beach was amazing, and very clean! Absolutely nothing to complain about there. We had our first meal at the buffet and we found it hard to find anything decent to eat. There was not much selection and most of the food was cold. If your a wine drinker you won't want to drink the wine they serve at the buffet. It was terrible, we couldn't even drink it. We ended up ordering a bottle for $25. Breakfast the next day was pretty much the same, not much selection and everything was cold. The pools were clean and not too crowded. We ate lunch at the Mexican restaurant that day, they had a menu with a few choices on it. My sister said the Lemon Chicken was very good, I ordered the sandwich and it was ok. We had dinner and the Italian restaurant and it was not too bad, better wine from a bottle at least. The pasta was very tasty and the pumpkin soup was great! We had lunch at the pizza place upstairs the next day and it was very good also. We also went to the Dominican restaurant, and it was also decent. By far the best restaurant was the Japanese. Wi-fi was not cheap if you wanted to use it, it was free in the casino after 6pm (the only problem was the smoking). After the first night our tv pictures wasn't working, I told the front desk and was happy that they replaced the tv that afternoon. The maid service was spotty, they usually came too early and if you were still in your room they didn't come till later in the evening. I know my sister had a hard time getting towels, and had to share towels with her sons. On my last full day there is spent it waiting for over 2 hours to get the repairman to open my safe which wouldn't open. I called 3 times and asked the maid for the man to come. Once he fixed it, it was still not working well so I decided to carry everything around with me instead of waiting for the repairman to come back again. As a Travel Agent, overall I would tell my clients it was not a bad resort, was clean and had lots of stuff for our teenagers to do. I would have likely been saying this place was amazing if we had a better room, in a better location not beside the storage closet with the big giant loud gate. Also the service couldn't have been better, not too bad would give it 3* not 4* as they indicate.

Dear Guest, Thank you very much for the time you spent to share your personal impressions of your stay at our Occidental Caribe, we always welcome feedback, as it allows us to continually improve the experience we create for our guests. We have also taken good note of your remarks on the dining experiences and sincerely lament reading that we fell short of your culinary expectations on this occasion, although I would like to take the opportunity to point out that our Executive Chefs follow a two weeks menu rotation including a wide array of both local and international delicacies to cater for all diet requirements and please the most demanding palates, this is why we are sorry to read that we were not able to conquer yours and will make sure to discuss your critics with our team. Please accept our sincerest apologies for the imperfections you describe in your review, all rooms for new arrivals are checked by our head of housekeeping and maintenance to ensure that everything is functional and spotless for our guests, clearly this situation is not performing to our usual standard. Please be assured that your comments will be taken into serious consideration and that they will help us to improve our services. Once again, thank you for your time and despite the issues you have raised following your stay, we hope that Occidental Caribe will remain an option for your next holiday and that we will have the opportunity to restore your faith in our company in the near future. Best Regards Director Occidental Caribe
