“Way better resorts in the same price range”

This is my fourth resort in Punta Cana and by far my least favorite. We arrived to the resort at around 12pm and our rooms were not ready until AFTER 3:30pm. The rooms were outdated & humid-I'm not picky about that BUT they could've at least been clean. Our beds were disgusting. The sheets smelled like urine and the pillow cases smelled like sweat. They tried to tell us it was the humidity but no I'm pretty sure the sheets those were the same sheets the previous guest slept in. That's completely UNACCEPTABLE. Food: the food was not that great. Most staff members were friendly. Especially the Bartenders. I wouldn't come back. Like I mentioned before, there are better resorts in the area in the same price range. This place doesn't even offer free wifi. Most resorts offer free wifi OR they have a lobby with free wifi. $12 a day for wifi is a bit much and it's only ONE device at a time.

    “Best vacation ever!!!”

My family absolutely loves the Dominican already and the Occidental Caribe is perfect for families and the entertainers are great!! Chocolate (Gabriel Rojas) Julio and Juan were so nice!! I wish I could stay forever with them!! I got to dance with them after the shows(my favorite thing to do even though I'm very bad at it). the entertainers have dance lessons and are probably the best dancers I've ever seen in my life! I aspire to be that happy doing my job! I see them deal with difficult people in such a great and nice way! They make you feel like family and have great activities like yoga on the beach!! (How can it get better than that!) And you can win things like rum and massages. I won a crazy balloon toss game with a random partner from Russia!!! My parents won the ideal couple show in the theater. Would recommend bringing a bigger cup (we brought Patriots cups and they ask where we're from). The ocean was one of the best parts of course! At the pasta bar at night ask for penne and one of the pasta makers will start dancing and singing!!! The hotel is beautiful!! We are definitely going to be back!

    “Lots of Changes”

Lots of changes and new staff since last visit. The new additions of new furniture look very nice but other than that I will say that since Sandy, last manager, has left the consistency is just not there. In the restaurants the food would be good and the service was crappy. Staff does not seem to be as friendly. There is lots of push for the VIP membership. I was taken to the other Occendial Resort and shown rooms, had a drink in a lounge there, etc. Here is my thought on this - everyone goes on vacation and pays lots of money for this vacation so everyone should be treated more equal. The drink I had was the best ever but why can I not get that drink all the time. Why do I have to be VIP for that. So I say look after the people that travel all the time, that do not have this VIP membership, so you will continue getting tourists. To me this VIP is just making someone at the top richer. Also there was some problem with the food not being cooked enough, hamburgers at lunch time and my daughter came back home and had health issues due to food being undercooked. So all in all I have to say, I do not think I will be returning to this resort especially if all tourists cannot be treated equally and forget VIP cause I think we should all be treated like VIP!!!!! And just for the record this was my 7th trip to this resort and the first time that I was not even close to being as happy with the resort as before!!! Someone needs to pulls their socks up!!!

    “Be prepared to have fun!”

My husband, three teenagers, and I just returned home from a week of fun, fun, fun. Some of what you read for reviews is accurate - you CANNOT get to your room before 3p.m. Don't waste your time waiting for your room. Pack a beach bag in your luggage, check in to get your bracelets, go have a drink, some food and then go to the beach, pools, trampoline, trapeze etc. It is a good idea to bring larger plastic cups - we brought plastic Patriots football cups (cheap at the dollar store). The staff loved it and it gave them reason to ask if we lived near Boston. Bring a lot of sunscreen and sometype of hat with a brim. The sun is strong and beautiful. Most of all enjoy everything! Learn the salsa, the meringue, the club dance. Play volleyball, darts, and all the games on the beach and at the pool. It is helpful to learn a few words of Spanish. The employees are catering to many different nationalities and do their best to know a few words of our languages so take the time to learn a few of theirs. We had great experiences with employees - Yacaira at the buffet was incredible. She took the time to learn our names and greeted us like family each meal. The animation staff were great too. Julio, Chocolate, and Juan made every activity fun and funny. They have to deal with a lot of different tourists (some not so nice tourists) and they did a great job handling so many tourists. My husband and I won the Ideal Occidental couple. As a prize, we won some rum and a couples massage. I will admit, I would not have visited the spa if we hadn't won, however, it was the most relaxing experience EVER! If you like massages, you will be happy with the massage in the spa. We will absolutely be returning to this hotel. Enjoy!

    “great for budget”

Just got back from my second trip to this hotel- this time with a 7 year old boy. We had a great time here. He loved the pools, jumping in the waves, beautiful beach, swim-up bar, and endless french fries and ice-cream, some -but not all- of the kid’s activities. He loved the French toast and the cereal dispenser. As a single mom, I felt very safe because the life guards and security seemed attentive. I wonder about the bad reviews- did these people travel at all before, or at this price? I booked a vacation, not a fantasy. And we had a great vacation. My belief is that whatever energy you bring to your vacation, that is the trip you will receive. You can look for things to complain about, or notice everything going well, and have more fun. Some aspects of room are dated, but very clean and good room service. If you are on a budget you already know you can over-look a chipped tile or repeated menu. I was in building 7 and enjoyed the garden side. I’ve seen some photos of “modern” hotels, and frankly, that cold, industrial look does not feel welcoming to me the way this old world wood decor does. This hotel with Spanish tile roof and iron railings looks great with palm trees!!! Plan your times and you won’t have to complain. Never had a problem booking a restaurant, but went in early morning when not busy. That is just common sense. Same as front desk- pick your time to go with request, and don’t get upset if a big bus load just arrived, go have a drink and return afterwards with your question. Your attitude should match the service you expect. If you are considerate, and have a kind smile, they will also. Excellent frothy coffee combos and hot chocolate in bar next to French restaurant- way faster than bar outside big Buffett. The food was good. Some items did not suit me, some did and were deliciouse. It will be the same for you. You can have all veggies or all fruit or all carbs and all meat...it is up to you. Plenty of options to suit any diet. I don’t understand reviews that don’t like the food. Some food I did not enjoy- but there was SO much else to choose from, so who cares? I got what I paid for. All the chicken dishes and roasted/steamed vegetables suited us. Some beef very tender. The Japanese and French restaurants were awesome. The lobster bisque and beef at French restaurant was so good, my son asked we go again. Japanese sushi rolls were not my favourite (dried out) ,but the miso soup and main course were exceptional- the cook put on a real show for us,they make it in front of you.. Fantastic pizza restaurant for lunch (near swim up bar pool) with real, chewy good crust , wood-fired !!! We sat there every day, eating in the breeze looking out at the ocean. Beautiful. Staff very kind to my son. Mini buffet under pizza restaurant was helpful for a quick meal without long wait. With big buffet you need to know what you want and stick to it i.e for both pasta bar and omelette bar, I pick all my veggies/ham and which sauce and then ask for half the noodles or half the egg so I get a plate that tastes rich with flavour and texture from so many veggies. Half the normal pasta to full portion of sauce. That ratio worked well. Then I’d do it again if still hungry-rather than a big plate of noodles or large amounts of egg and small amount of veggies. Ask the chef to stop cooking the omelette before he is done, and it will be moist rather than singed/dried out. Regardless of where I go, when I travel I often get an upset stomach from sampling such a wide variety of new food I’m not use to digesting-at least not in one day, so I always take chewable Pepto-Bismol to help prevent it from getting out of hand. Then scale back to mild food (carbs) when needed. This is not a reflection of the hotel, it is a reflection of changing my diet so suddenly. The drinks are pre-mix and I wish I had brought a small hand-blender to turn all that lovely fresh fruit into a real smoothie to add the alcohol too. I’m not use to so much pre-mix syrup! Take a travel mug and the bar tenders will fill for you rather than all those plastic cups. Bring face cloths. Flutter board for kids to to “surf” waves. Chips/ pretzels as you may want a snack in your room and rest when the sun is too hot. Enjoy yourself, you will, you will!
