    “Relaxing vacation”

Just returned home from a 1 week stay at Occidental Cozumel. Overall, great experience and I would return if I return to Cozumel. Hotel room - 4 stars - basic, clean, turned over every day in a timely manner. Location of the hotel is great - less than 1 mile walk away from Albertos restaurant which is convenient. Far away from downtown crowd and cruise ship docks/cruise ship crowd - so this could be a pos or neg depending on what you're looking for. Beach/pool - 5 stars - well groomed beach, plenty of chairs without having to wake up early to reserve. Would have liked the umbrella huts that some other resorts offer, but there were enough palm trees offering shade. Tere were only 2 pools available - they were clean, adequate. I didn't spend too much time at the pool. They also have free snorkel gear, free kayak and some other non-motor activities to rent for 1 hour each day. Food - 3 stars - one buffet available at each meal with a pretty good variety of choices. Vegetarian options are very limited. Food was average, just as what you expect at a buffet. Restaurants require day of reservations - mediterranean restaurant the best - classy and offered a great menu selection. Mexican and seafood restaurants were so-so. Bars/drinks - 4 stars - Carlos at the lobby bar and Victor at the pool bar are exceptional. Never had a problem getting drinks, short lines, good drinks - they have better liquor that you have to ask specifically for, otherwise you will likely get the bottom shelf liquor if you ask for generic drinks off their menu. I just wish they had straws so I can mix my pina coladas! Entertainment - 4 stars - adequate nightly entertainment - they had a live band, bingo, fire show when I was there. There is a "night club" (La Mision?) but it is pretty dead in there. Quiet hours around the hotel rooms starting at 11pm. I went to bed every night by 11-11:30pm. Daytime poolside entertainment is also standard - beach volleyball, pool volleyball, friendship bracelets, cooking class, zumba, aquagym as some of the options. Only complaint is that they do not offer free wifi even in the lobby. You have to be in the royal club to get wifi, or you pay $11usd per hour. There is also an option to pay for 1 day of wifi or 1 week. It was kind of nice to be completely disconnected, but would still have like the option for free wifi in communal areas. Tip: learn to dive when in Cozumel. The reefs are the best on this side of the world (second only to the great barrier reef), so go scuba diving! They offer free scuba lessons so that you can go out and do some diving. We only did a snorkeling excursion and I really regret not taking advantage of diving. Tip: you will get accosted from Barcelo team (new owners of Occidental) selling their time share packages. Actually, I don't know what they were selling because I would avoid them at all costs. They all stay around this one room in the main lobby near the buffet restaurant, and I just learned to avoid that room by cutting through the lobby bar and taking a detour around them. They will promise you discounts on excursions or a free stay with them again within a year, if you have breakfast or lunch with them and sit for a 45minute presentation while they try to sell you something. If it's raining one morning, you could do it to get some good discounts, but if time is of the essence and you don't want to waste it for a presentation, then learn the detour.

    “Awesome location”

The location and the hotel's infraestructure are lovely and quite clean. I really enjoy scuba diving at Cozumel, but this trip was very special because of the good weather and the entertainment at the hotel. I really admire the work of the activities staff; they're organised and they have a lot of activities and night shows. I would like to thank Mrs. Sandra Garcia because she is a great supervisor and a nice person.

    “Outstanding service”

Over the Christmas holidays we stayed at the Occidental Cozumel and it’s surely worth recognizing one of their outstanding employees: Carolina Interian. She was working the front desk when we arrived (in fact, she seemed to be at the front desk whenever I had a question or needed assistance). She booked us in promptly and answered all our questions. When we had a problem with our room, she told me when to return to work out other arrangements. She was there on time; she remembered my complaint; and she moved us to a much better situation. Throughout our entire vacation, she was polite, responsive, and patient. In fact, she even answered questions that should have been addressed by our tour representative, who was never available during our stay. Her professionalism was exemplary. Occidental is quite fortunate to have her as an employee. Guests are in very good hands with her on the job.

    “Beautiful location! Exceptional customer service!”

My family and I just spent a week and it was one of our best vacations ever. The food was awesome, beach was great and staff was better. We enjoyed the activities that were offered and were treated like kings and queens. Edger, Jesus made our trip! They had many fun events planned and included everyone. The service was awesome, Santos and Victor made sure we were taken care of at all times . Best service I have had at any resort. The rooms were very clean and nice. We will be back next year! “3rd stay and will be back for the 4th”

It's funny how things can be the same and so different at the same time. Last time we visited was in 2009. 7 years later, we were back with extended family, our children, and 1st Grandson for 6 days. Ages ranged from 55+ to 18 months. 4 out of the 11 were divers. I was not one of them. I have no 1st hand experience with the Dive Shop, but my Hubby, 2 sons and SIL have everything good to say about them. It's a bit less expensive to reserve tanks online before hand. Unfortunately, Hubby had ear issues after the 2nd dive and wasn't able to dive for the rest of the trip. The other 3 dove at least once a day, if not twice. There is no monetary refund, but we do have a credit for next time. Lesson learned: Don't book so many dives beforehand. Play it day by day. You may spend a bit extra, but at least you aren't paying for what you did NOT use. Hotel was exactly as we remembered it. The grounds (jungle) had grown up A LOT since our last visit. Including the Iguana's. Yes, they are all over. Saw a slo-mo fight. Really weird. The staff was excellent...a little tipping goes a long way. Even if you don't (WHICH YOU SHOULD) they were most accommodating and very friendly. Beach side is one of the best. All sand, no corral. Just south, there are a few resorts that are "nice" but the beach is almost non-swimmable due to rocks and such. Snorkeling off the beach was enlightening. Grab some bread at lunch time to feed the Angel Fish and Minnows close to shore. GO TO ALBERTO'S a 5 minute walk south via beach! Seafood is the best, ambiance so much fun, drinks reasonable. A bucket of beers was $5. Did I mention the seafood??!! Oh, the sunset...and the bio luminescence stuff in the water on the walk back.....if you are as lucky as we were! Negatives: Food. Very average and same ol same ol. Omelette bar for breakfast was awesome, but have to wait for it during busy times 8:30 - 9:30 AM. Lunch just OK, again lot's of variety, but it all tends to taste the same after a day or two. Buffet dinner? I'd rather skip it and wait for the pizza bar that opens at 9:30 (used to be on the roof and create your own. Now in the main buffet area and limited offerings ) Pizza not bad, but not great. It's open till 1 AM so at that point, who cares? It's food! Specialty restaurants just OK. Go for the Mediterranean. Really good steaks. Kind of thought the Mexican one was a bust as that's what we have been eating...one night it looked closed at prime time. Think on that a minute. Make reservations early in the morning as it fills up fast. If you are going to rent a jeep, van or car....do it in town. You may have to get a taxi there, but it 1/2 price than renting through the hotel. Make sure to hit Coconuts, the Barb Marley Bar and Point de Sur. Missed it this last trip, but on the radar for the next (we have Dive credits, right??!!) Plus, I was down 3 out of 6 days with a nasty cold. Go figure. DO NOT BOOK TRANSFER in advance from the airport. Cost us 2X as much as was a royal hassle. Should be less than $10 each way PP. Negotiate at the airport. Taxi is roughly $5 PP into town from hotel. There's always room to negotiate and you can't do that online. Shows every night...cheesy, but fun. Grandson loved to run/dance under the lights on the square :) Dancing and games in the lobby bar. All in all....will be back. Accommodations are great, staff is wonderful, bars are open (top shelf if you ask) and Alberto's is just a walk away for some awesome eats. FYI everything I packed, stored or hung up......all needs to be washed upon our return home. It's all damp. I'd give 5 star if it wasn't for the food. Mexico perfect otherwise. .
